“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

신촌에서 스카우팅하다가 택시 타려고 했는데 나가면서 이 여자의 원피스가 눈에 띈 거예요. 화련하고 예쁘고 좀 에스닉한 느낌이 나면서도. 맘에 들었어요. 가방, 팔찌, 그리고 샌들…진짜 내추럴한 분위기. 특이 팔찌를 보니까 그 것도 에스닉한 아이템이죠.

We were on our way out of Shinchon after doing some shooting when this young woman’s dress caught our eye, with its bright colors and somewhat ethnic style. We just liked it. When you factor in the bag, bracelets, and the sandals, it adds up to a natural feeling; especially the bracelets, since they are also pretty “ethnic” in design.

한국에서는 남자들이 조금 캐주얼한 편인데 아무리 해도 여자들은 좀더 “드레스 업”하죠. 남자는 쿨한 캐주얼 분위기인데 여자는 대게 조금 더 화려하게, 눈에 띄게 옷을 입은 거예요. 하여튼 - 멋진 커플이죠?

In Korea, men tend to be a little more dressed down than women, who generally are dressed to impress wherever they go. The boyfriend in this picture is a casual kind of cool, whereas the girlfriend in this pair has definitely exerted more effort to define a “look” and a complete outfit. In any case, they look good together!

참. 그래서 street photographer로 계속 애를 쓰면서 힘들게 사는 건 할만하다. 사실 밑에 사진에서 여자 때문에만 재밌는 거아니고 오른쪽에 아저씨가 깜짝 놀래면서 순간적으로 보는 건 재밌는 거죠. 완벽한 작품아니라도 (아저씨 다 안 나오고 맨 윈쪽에 있는 남자가 프레임에서 안 나왔으면 좋았을텐데) 그래도 볼만 하죠? 땡큐! ㅋㅋ

It’s pictures like this that make street photo worth doing, as hard as it is to make ends meet as a job. The picture above is interesting not so much because of the girl, but because of the ajussi to the right who was a bit startled to look up at this pretty risque woman walking by, and is caught looking at just the right moment. Technically, it’s not one of my strongest images (I wish I had caught all of the ajussi’s body, and it would have been nice if the man to the left hadn’t been there), but one worth looking at.

Saks Fifth Avenue opens a shoe store so big, it has its own zip code. And no, I’m not joking. From Naver:

August 14, 2007 — NEW YORK has its fair share of designer shoe salons, but how many can claim their own ZIP code? On Friday, Saks Fifth Avenue unveils its new heel emporium on the eighth floor - a shoe department so big, it will be the first store floor granted its own digits by the U.S. Postal Service: 10022-SHOE.

And, yes, there will be stamps.

But more importantly, there will be shoes - about 10,000 pairs, nearly double what Saks used to carry on the fourth floor.

Knit caps are hot? Like “making-me-sweat” hot, or “this-is-the-next-new-trend” kinda hot? Well, likely both.

Only a year or so late, this trend has hit Korea like the Allies storming the beaches of Normandy. It’s everywhere.

Even in the summer, especially in the summer, knit hats are hot.

동대문에서 약 1시간만 사진을 찍고 있었는데도 여러 여자들이 이 모자를 쓰고 다니는 걸 봤어요. 멋있죠?

Just in Dongdaemun for around an hour or so, I shot several of the heads of several young ladies. This trend is hot.

패션 펜치마킹하러 동대문에 갔는데 멋진 사람들이 너무 많이 있었네요. 동대문은 한국의 폄범한 패션 중심이니까 멋쟁들이 엄청 많이 있었던 거예요. 두타빌딩 옆에 밑에 이쁜 친구를 만나게 됐어요. 요즘에 이런 모자 많이 쓰고 있네요. 너무 귀여운 스타일과 유행이며 큰 후프 귀거리도 아부 예쁘고 어울리네요. 이 친구의 룩은 어린 귀여움이며 좀 성숙해보이는 거예요.

On a fashion benchmarking trip to Dongdaemun, the center of everyday fashion styles for Korean women, young and old, we bumped into this fashionable young lady next to the Doota shopping mall building and did a little photo shoot. One thing we noticed on the trip is no end of knit caps, which this young lady had successfully integrated into her look. Overall, and with the gold hoop earrings, she was the epitome of a “youthful cute” look that was as flattering to her even as it gave her a more sophisticated and just a tad sexy kind of vibe.

밝안색 가방까지 그렇네요. 그리고 red, white, and blue이니까 색깔 코디는 아주 스마트이네요. 점점 생각하면 우아하네요! 그리고 입고 있는 요즘에 유행하는 청색 나시 미니원피스를 잘 입었죠? 진짜 스마트하게…

Part dress, part t-shirt, with the red mini-backpack, and ball o’ white lace on the shoes – makes for a truly interesting ensemble. And these days, that “jump-dress” (’나시 미니원피스’) is a pretty popular item on the Seoul streets.
