I Am…Sad?

Aug 7, 2007 Author: FMS | Filed under: Blogged In (from Korean news), Just Funny, Multimedia

This tidbit about the new drama “I Am Sam”, from NoCutNews:

Well, the premise is pretty…umm…a stupid cliche? Gangsters and sexy students and corrupt teachers, and…*YAWN*! But forget about the story! The publicity shot, which is supposed to show us “sexy” schoolgirls who are supposed to get at our pedophiliac urges in a Britney-in-that-video kind of way, can’t even do that right.

They look terrible! The schoolgirl outfits, which look nothing like anything anyone actually wears in Korea, look horrible. And the shoes (are those pompoms on the yellow ones in the front?) are something even self-respecting women in their 30’s might not wear, unless they were drinking while dressing; And the matching ajumma purses? The black socks and boxing booties? Ugh!

And don’t even get me started on those awkward, not-sexy poses and their beetlebug sunglasses. Wow – it looks like the designers have no idea how to make a schoolgirl look like a “bad girl” – which shouldn’t be that hard to do, in this day and age, right?

They definitely look like they were dressed by a middle-aged blind man who let three naughty schoolgirls go crazy on his credit card in a vintage store – or a Goodwill.

A fashion disaster! (And a conceptual one, too!)

Vivian Wenli Lin: video artist, world traveler, educator, feminist (no, she that doesn’t mean she hates men), perpetual student, fashion connoisseur. Originally from California, this Bay Area lady went to Berkeley, then skipped over to NYC for a couple years at NYU. After a short stint in Asia, she now resides in Amsterdam where she’s working on a third degree at the Sandberg Instituut. Her video work focuses on stories of women and examines identity. Her projects have been featured in galleries and film festivals all over the world. Her educational work has taken her to South Africa, and soon to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to teach women and youth how to capture their experiences through a medium she loves and knows so well.

That’s how Vivian “looks on paper,” but explaining who she is beyond her accomplishments is much more challenging. I’ve been searching for the best way to describe Vivian since the day that I met her. Basically, I instantly fell in love with her, and I wouldn’t be the first to say something like that. She has a graceful goddess-like presence. She is gorgeous and comfortable in her skin and radiates a certain kind of fabulousness that makes every moment with her feel special and joyful. She’s one of the cool girls–always laughing or saying something funny, dressed to inspire awe at all times, constantly “in the know” about all the cool stuff for the extraordinary people. At the same time, Vivian is one of the most socially conscious, good-natured, down-to-earth chicas I’ve ever met and the best friend a girl could ever ask for.

I’m so excited that she’s letting us into her closet because on top of being such an phenomenal person, she has some really REALLY superb and unique pieces. She has handmade skirts that are tailored to fit her curves perfectly, funky shoes to turn you green with envy, and put all together, outfits to make you drool. Most of all, she can always turn heads with the way she wears that one last (invisible) accessory, her attitude.

1. High-heels or flats?

Since moving to Amsterdam, flats have taken over. I feel really silly riding my bike with heels on. I see women here do it everyday - in miniskirts, business suits, etc. So, after a year, I have been inspired and more courageous to revive my heels. But no more than 3″!

2. What makes a fabulous shoe?

The color and the material. But more importantly if you look good walking in them without hobbling around in pain. No use in wearing a stiletto if you are walking crouched and bow-legged like an ogre!

3. How many pairs of shoes should a woman own?

A woman should own all the pairs she desires.

4. How many pairs of shoes do you own?

I currently own a sparse 10 pairs of shoes! I used to own many more but was forced to part with the frivolous pairs when I moved.

5. What’s the most you’re willing to pay for a pair of shoes?

I feel bad if I spend more than 150 USD on a pair, but after growing up a bit, I feel that investing more money is worth it in the long run. If the extra money you are paying goes to the quality of the shoe, and not just the brand name, then your feet will scream thank you. And your shoes will last longer…

6. What do you do in your shoes? What is your occupation? your interests/hobbies/activities?

At this moment, I am working on finishing a MFA in Amsterdam. I am a student/video artist/video workshop facilitator/part-time babysitter/part-time videographer. My interests and hobbies include: riding my bicycle, reading fiction books, watching films, and flea market shopping. My activities include: drinking bloody mary’s and fruit smoothies on my healthy days and drinking wine and eating fried food on my not so healthy days. I like to cook but I am not so great at it. I would love to be a true foodie and go out to eat all the time, alas, I have no budget for that, and the food in Holland is not so exciting.

7. Which pair of shoes do you wear the most? the least? Why?

I wear these black flats from the ‘Tsumori Chisato Walk’ line. Because they are black, can slip easily on and off, have a very small heel which doesnt make them so flat my feet hurt and i feel like i’m wearing slippers. What is great is they can also be worn with or without stockings. So, I usually bring a pair of knee lenth socks with me if I will be out all day and slip ‘em on when it gets chilly.I really wish i could wear these turquoise blue wedges more often but the edges of the material are not so soft - that’s what I get for buying cheap shoes! I either get blisters at my heel or on my big toe. I keep thinking that they are almost broken in - but at what cost to my poor feet?

8. I believe every pair of shoes has a fascinating history. What’s the story behind your favorite pair?

This is a very long story:

My current favorite pair are boots by Chie Mihara - a Brazilian Japanese shoe designer. Her shoes are made in the most amazing leather. Supposedly she used to work for an orthopedic surgeon or something and figured out how to make a beautiful but comfortable shoe! So, I was visiting Paris last December and first discovered her in the Printemps. I coveted and yearned but the 400euro + pricetags on her shoes kept them at a major distance. This May, I returned and saw that they were only selling her summer shoes, I asked a sales woman who turned out to be from the UK, sparing my ridiculous attempts at French, and asked if she had any more of the Chie Mihara deep purple boots. She went into the back and came back with the only pair of boots they had…the last pair and exactly my size!

The shoes had a price tag on the box. They had gone down from 397 to 273 euros.

My mother was with me, and practically threw her credit card at the sales woman. I hesitated and told her that I wanted to think about it. I felt that the heel was a bit too high, and they were not exactly the same pair that I had seen last December. And, even though they were on sale, I felt that 273 euros was still too expensive. As I was pondering, the manager comes by and rips the sales price tag off the box! The sales woman went to find out why - supposedly in Paris, it is against the law in department stores like Printemps to sell their sales inventory during the regular shopping season. Only twice a year can they hold their sales.

I then picked up the shoe and looked at the sole. There was another price tag, and it said 197! The manager finally agreed to sell it to us at that price. This time, my mom actually threw her credit card and we were rung up. To make a long story even longer, the sales woman accidentally had us rung up at the original price of 397 and we had to go through some more hassle to be credited. Phew.

Moral of the story: Ask and you shall receive.

Join MissKoco and her sis, Miss30000, and FMS bringing up the rear on an audio tour of Doota!, the most popular shopping mall in Dongdaemun, set right smack in the middle of the fashion shopping district of Seoul, South Korea.

Play!

The audio tour starts right in front of the building, and you can get to the building itself from either the subway Line 4 Dongdaemun stop (exit #8) or the Lines 2, 4, 5 Dongdaemun Stadium stop (exit #14).

We went right down to the B1 level, where we met a friendly and fabulous young lady who was really happy to explain not only about the store in which she was working, but oriented us a bit as to other cool places to go.

Img 5678 Copy

The store in which she’s working is “Bloom” and since it doesn’t have a web site, it most accessible from (02) 3398-7090.

Img 5676 Copy

Doota!

We then went up to the first and main floor in the building, where most of the contemporary and normal fashion is – where you’d go if you were a 20 or 30-something woman. The B1 level is a bit wilder and younger, depending on who you are. Stuff you might wear on a date or to work would be more ground level fare.

The woman in the “Top Shop” (that’s the name of their store, not a description) near the front of the building really helped out with an interview that laid down how the system at Doota! works.

Img 5704 Copy

One thing you can count on in Doota! is set prices, which sits especially well with foreign customers. Since many other places don’t have this policy, and even many Koreans don’t know about it – since Dongdaemun is well known for having no real set prices and traditionally had done things “street market” style – they have a prepared sign in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese.

Then we went on up to the 4th floor, which is where Doota! has its strength – shoes. This is truly “Korea, Sparkling” – right here. We got a pick of a pair at the store where one helpful owner gave us another interview that surprised even Miss 30000, since she didn’t know that you could get any shoe, any design, altered and fitted to pretty much any human foot. That’s good to know.

Img 5711 Copy

And finally, we went to the 5th floor, which has more glitter and sparkle than a crack-smoking fairy sprite on acid. Another friendly worker helped us out when we talked about accessories, and made me pretty thirsty, what with all the orange around the place. I really wanted a mango smoothie afterwards.

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

    • Sarah: Indeed insane. And it does not just apply to women’s fashion… I know men who were getting into acting and they were up by their agents for hip/thigh reduction surgery to minimize their normally athletic...
    • 수경: i couldn’t find more solace in this post.. >.<
    • impolite one: There’s nothing wrong with that girls legs… but her outfit, dear lord…
    • Brian: Well, I dunno, maybe I’m in the minority but I *hate* boots/shoes like that. Regardless of the nationality, but as I said on the Korea Sparkle post about this they do kind of make Korean legs look more squat....
    • miny: REALLY!? i cant believe its that bad! when i see KRN celebrities, i don’t think their calves are exceptionally small, proportion-wise =O or haven’t i paid close enough attention?
    • Flower73: Hello everyone, and Merry Christmas. Unfortunately I have to say that the picture is sold today is the beauty of super thin women. I´m always trying to stay thin, as Latino girl I have many curves and must stay...
    • Elise: I don’t even like that look… I find it kind of ironic how when winter rolls around girls are wearing leggings and other non-pants just so they can fit into the boots. for me, winter is about wearing as...
    • mins: just wow. what a complete idiot.
    • FMS: Yeah — “huge” calves are basically having calves. What I consider generally normal legs are considered Brontosaurus-sized here.
    • miny: omg what do they consider HUGE CALVES? i cant believe they think exercise makes ur legs ugly o_o thats f**ked up
    • Jae Young: Srsly, how lame. I actually think skinny jeans look better on legs with some meat, otherwise you look like you have matches for legs. The boots are tricky, but they could also advertise oh I dunno, boots that...
    • Godzilla: Stupid a$$hole$ that think like that. And poor girls who abide by these “rules”.
    • songy: ouch.. Hear hear. I did enjoy your ranting. That article is really crazy for sure - only found in Korea would you say? I remember back in uni about 50% of girls in my class had plastic surgery done on their faces.....

OMG.. i have the urge to buy this on a korean online shopping mall the other time… but it is just too hot to wear it in singapore…
    • Kelsey Freeman: Actually, a friend of mine pointed out to me that there is at least a 400 year old tradition of putting animal hats on children near the new year, in Asia. Apparently it has something to do with fooling...
    • jayun: I’d have to be 7 to wear the hat and mittens and not feel so insecure hehe…
    • Bekah: I like these hats. They’re adorable. If I was in korea right now, I’d probably be wearing one.
    • lovelyprincess: I like the polar bear hat from last year. This year was disappointing though, because Paris Baguette is giving elf hats with a cake purchase this year, and they aren’t cute like the polar bear ones. I...

    • margaretha: High heels are sexy, but they’re painful too. I can’t stand two hours standing on them.
    • Jae Young: Heels totally fubar my feet and my legs but I love being tall and they do make my legs look hotter. I also started wearing heels for work. I wish they made a wider variety of flats, but they all tend to be...
    • Bekah: I’ve only worn high heels for a few special occasions. They are soo uncomfortable. I can’t imagine someone wearing them everyday, no matter how good they look.
