이 사람을 아나? ‘비즈 마키’이라고. 1989년도에 이 노래가 나왔을 때 난 고등학생였지. 그때는 랩이란 음악이 아직도 백인 사회한테 제대로 인정을 안받을 때였어. MTV에 의하면 ‘음악아니다’고 그런 주장이 있었고 대중문화화 되고 있었을 때쯤이였어. 거의 이 비디오를 보려면 ‘흑인 엔터테인멘트 방송’(Black Entertainment Television)이란 채널 봐야한 거였어.

비즈 마키이는 열정적이고 창조적인 랩 노래를 만든 대단한 가수이며 제일…뭐랄까…못생기면서도 매력적이라고 그런 말이 많은 거야. 그를 싫어하는 사람이 없었지. 착한 이미지이니까. 그리고 우리 10대들이 다 이해하루 수 있는 노래한 거야: “Just a Friend.” 그 말은 ‘그냥 친구’이라고 의미한 거고 어떤 좋아하는 여우같은 여자가 속이는 말이지. 딱 다른 남자랑 걸렸는데 ‘아. 그 사람이 그냥 친군데…” 거짓말인데도 믿고 싶은 거지, 끝까지. 이 노래에서 그런식으로 여자가 계속 이상한 짓은 하는데 비즈 마키는 계속 믿고 넘어가고 또 걸리고 그런 거야. ㅋㅋ 진짜 이 부분이 나오면 그 아픔을 확 느낄 수 있지:

“You! You got what I neeeeeed! But you say he’s just a friend. You say he’s just a friend!”

“너! 널 필요해! 근데 그가 그냥 친구라고? 그는 그냥 친구라고오오오오?”

그 건 메인 포인트이야. 그리고 패션쪽으로 보면은 그 하얀 가발을 쓰면서 모르자트처럼 피아노 치는 모습이…ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 사랑하는 모습이야. 이 비디오 보면 아무리 어른 생활에서 어려움이 있더라도 바로 웃고 힘을 주는 장면이야. 특히 피아노짜리에서 확 일어나고 연정적으로 노래를 부를 때. 함 보세요. ㅋ

Back in the days when rap wasn’t considered “real music” and still wasn’t allowed to be played on MTV, Biz Markie was already the MAN to those of us in high school and trying to catch the new videos on BET’s “Rap City” with that atrocious host whose name I can’t remember. But the videos were good, and Biz Markie’s song is one I remember channeling the hormone-charged emotions of my generation.

“Oh baby, yoooooou!” is a chant that everyone my age and 10 years in either direction knows as a part of their emotional DNA, and brings forth true, blue emotion from back when we were younger, fresher, and much less jaded than we are now.

And who remembered Biz Markie as so fashionable? Looking at the video now, it’s apparent that he or someone had a strong sense of style – the Mozart getup, white wig, and piano to highlight that simplistic but addictive piano hook in the song was sheer genius.

And Biz’s sage advice is as wise now as it seemed then: “Don’t ever talk to a girl who says she just ‘has a friend.’” Or many “friends.” Hehe.

This just in from the Daily Mail, where fashion columnist Liz Jones challenged herself to wear 8 pairs of designer shoes over New York Fashion Week. The results are as funny as they are interesting:

뉴욕의 패션위크 진행하는 동안 명품구두를 신기로했던 리즈 존즈이란 패션 리포터의 기사는 너무 재밌었던 거예요. 모든 밑에 나오는 신발 밑에 ‘얼마동안 참을 수 있었는지’이란 말이 나와요. 너무 아파서 더이상 신을 수 없다는 한계죠. ㅋㅋ 물론 이런 의무가 모든 여자한테 꿈이라고 할 수 있겠다고 생각하지만 생각보다 아니래요. 자기 신발이 너무 아프고 이상해져서 - 피날 정도로 - 마지막에 피행기 탑승하려고했더니 거름이 너무 이상하게 아픈 것같아서 승무원이 바퀴를 단 의자를 해주겠다고 했대요. ㅋㅋㅋ 더 참을 수 있을 것같아요?

이하늬씨는 아주 아름다운 여성이다. 근데 이 사진들을 보니까 ‘우와 - 진짜 아름다운 여성에서 이상하게 무슨 퍼포먼스 아트에서 나오는 양복(羊服)을 입는 거네‘라고 생각했어요. ‘양복.’ 이 거 장난치는 거지?

이하늬 is just gorgeous, so this is an example of how you can make even a gorgeous woman look like she wandered off from a flock of sheep. This one isn’t even funny tragic. It’s sad tragic.

아니면 - 혹시 하늬의 스타일리스트가 양이랑 무슨 팬타시있는 건가? 호기 스타워즈식 양들의 여왕?이 사람을 찾고 빨리 물어보고 싶다. 도대체 왜 이런 컨셉으로 했는지? 하늬는 너무 대단한 뷰티인데 왜 이렇게 했는지.

I just wondered if the stylist responsible for this “fashion” look has serious sheep shearing fantasies. (Or is this fool updating the Queen Amidala look for the winter?)

I wanted to track the person down and just slap some sense into them for picking such a crappy look for Ms. Lee. Who would want to make a woman who is simply a vision look like she’s ready to provide wool for my next sweater?

I want to rally for a “Just Sad” category on FMS ’cause it might be that “Just Funny” just doesn’t cover the level of pathetic it takes to do this to someone so beautiful.

근데 옷, 스타일링, 무용술의 문제아니었어요. 바로 다들 춤, 노래, 그리고 랩을 하나도 못 하니까 문제지. 그리고 비디오가 처음에 시작했을 때 춤을 췄얼 때도 단순한 줄의 간격들을 못 지킨 거야. 휴.

But it wasn’t the clothes or the choreography. It was the fact that these five women cannot sing, rap, or even dance well. Did you see how far off the spacing of their line was in that simple-ass dance they did?

나라도 노래 더 잘 할 수 있겠다. 진짜. 나 노래방에 들어가서 보여줄께. 휴.

그리고 그 마지막 긴 음을 들었나? 반음 너무 내려서 한 거다. 아니. 사실 다들 그렇게 불렀어.

원더걸즈의 룩과 마케팅은 좋았는데 에진 나오니까 실망이다. 우와. 브리트니 스피어즈보다 공연을 더 못 할 수 있는 거네. ㅋㅋㅋ

Did you hear that last note at the end of the song? FLAT as a middle school girl in a ball gown on the night of the Sadie Hawkins dance. Oops! Wait…they are middle school girls. My bad. What can you expect?

I liked their look and marketing, but…wow. They really, really suck. It’s hard to believe someone can actually such worse than Britney Spears in last week’s VMA performance. But the Wonder Girls definitely do.

I skipped around the celebrity news sites looking for a celebrity in a vomit enducing outfit. However, the photos that struck me the most were ones of 이효리 at this year’s Seoul Drama Awards held in late August.

The resident FMS hater for hire actually starts her first post here with a compliment. I’ll have to spread some first-class hate later on to make up for this!

Hyo-ri looked really nice in this simple dress. Now I would have tweeked a few things, but, no matter, she’s not paying me to style her. She looked good that night.

Now this outfit coup is in stark contrast to some of the craptastical outfits of horror we’ve seen her wearing in the recent past. Let’s take a walk down fugly outfit memory lane, shall we?

Good lord, what on earth is going on here? A chain gang runaway with some demented scrap metal haute couture caboose attached with a bow? Oh, nevermind, there is just way too much fug here. Let’s just move on as that photo simply makes me want to claw my eyes out.

Remember this sad imitation of Beyonce’s great outfit? What the hell was Hyo-ri thinking?

Yes, that’s a short and shiny dress with dark tights and shoes – completely WRONG for that hot little dress!

Notice too, that both of these shiteous outfits have stripes. I’d like to be able to say it’s just Hyo-ri and stripes equalling instant doom, but we know there was some horrible styling going on here with both of these get ups.

Craptastic versus fantastic!

Hyo-ri’s outfit is so tragic that scolding your stylist isn’t good enough. You fire the stylist. What makes it worse is how damn great Bey looked. Swing that horse hair weave around Bey and show Hyo-ri how it’s done!

I’m glad Hyo-ri pulled it together for the Seoul Drama Awards. Let’s pray she keeps it up.

이번 종이인형 이벤트는 10대 팬들뿐만 아니라 시민들에게도 아주 호의적인 반응을 얻었다. 한 20대 여 회사원은 “제가 자라던 80년대에 정말 유행했던 놀이거든요. 정말 감회가 새로워요”라고 호감을 보였다.

진짜 스마트하다! 레트로 룩만아니라 원더걸즈를 20대와 30대까지는 좋아할 수 있는 이유가 생기는 거예요. 노스탈지아 마케팅 최고! 박진영씨 알까? 브리트니 스피즈의 앨범을 많이 산 20/30대는 어느정도 노스탈지아 때문에 산 거예요. 혹시 자기는 고등학생 때 브리트니의 룩은 바로 그 좋아했던 치어리더. 내 생각엔 ‘롤리타의 황상’보다는 자기는 고등학생 때 생각난 좋아했던 이쁜 그녀. 딱 그 룩이였어. 그냥 ‘롤리타’만 좋아한 거면 맨디 모어, 그리고 수 많은 브리트니를 카피한 가수들을 좋아했을 거예요. 근데 다 안 됐잖아요. 진영씨가 이렇게 원더걸즈하고 홍보하는 건 - 아주 스마트하다. 진짜.

SparQeen, since you said you liked So-hee so much, it seems the public is agreeing with you. They’re promoting a paper cutout doll of So-hee, seemingly the most popular member of the new pop sensation being promoted by Pak Jin-yeong – The Wonder Girls. It has a “school look” as well as the signature, miniature version of Wonder-Woman-as-a-girl.

Apparently, it’s not just for kids. It also has touched a nostalgia nerve with older people in their 20’s (and I would also venture to guess their 30’s), who remember playing with just these kind of paper cutout figures back when they were kids. These kinds of paper cutout collectibles were quite popular here in Korea, and included figures from Atom to Taekwon to Wonder Woman herself.

Another very smart, very savvy, retro move on Park’s part. Good marketing, good taste, and fabulous fashion!

날 조금 안다면 난 80년대의 패션을 대게 싫어하는 걸 알 서예요. 근데 이번도 박진영씨는 완전히 지니여스가 된 거예요. 이번에 원더걸스이란 그룹은 새로운 멤버랑 다시 시작했는데 옛날의 조금 변태같은 교복 컨셉에서 벗어난 거고 완전히 신선한 ‘레트로 룩’으로 뉴 비긴닝을 하고 있네요.

OK – I’ll just say right now that I don’t relish the 80’s revival. You know this about me if you’ve been here before. But that Pak Jin-young is a frickin’ genius. Upon the public replacement of one of the main members of the group, he’s gone from a cliched and somewhat questionable “naughty schoolgirls” look to a fresh and vibrant retro 80’s look, with some fabulous fashion to boot. 밑에 우리가 뉴스엔의 사진을 좀 만져서 재밌게 요소들을 추가했는데 80년대의 옛날 옥실에서 많이 있었던 전자오락처럼 나온 거예요 - 그 때는 게임들은 대게 심플하고 화려했죠? 그런 느낌을 잘 잡았고.

사실 80년대의 패션을 놀리는 건 너무 쉬워요. 왜 그럴까요? 바로 그 이유는 80년대의 패션 중에 놀릴 수 있는 부분은 많아서 그런 거예요. 그래도 지금 원더걸스는 너무 멋지게 나왔고 보니까 코디 너무 잘한 거예요: 화려한 펌프, 마돈나스러운 ‘투투’도 입고, 많은 뱅글, 막 날아나가는 머리. 다 있네요. 근데 진짜 생각보다 멋지네요…

Now, it’s really easy to make 80’s fashion look really, really bad. That’s because most 80’s fashion was really, really bad. But these girls somehow look great, with a simpler and more coordinated take on the 80’s look – the colorful pumps, the Madonna-video tutu, the heat-combed hair, heavy bangles – it’s all there. And it looks…good!

그리고 옛날 닌텐도 게임처럼 (마이오, 반갑다!) 그 배경은 퍼펙트이네요. 옛날 닌텐도 캐릭터 넣어보니까 너무 어울리지 않아요? 그리고 요즘에 패션사진쪽에 인기 있는 점프컷도 잘 이용한 거예요. 근데 진영씨! 난 마리오, 메가맨, 뭐 그런 캐릭터들이 다 넣었는데 왜 당신의 고용하는 디자이너 이런 컨셉으로 생각을 못 했을 건가? 메롱!

And that background he’s using for these actually interesting shots (mid-air jump shots are all the rage in fashion photography these days, it seems) is just jagged-edged, Nintendo-era, videogame sprite amazing.

이 메이크오버는 너무 천재같은 아이디어였어요. 그 패턴, 색깔은 딱 그 옷이랑 엉울리고 씬디로퍼의 “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”이란 비디오처럼 가볍고 신나는 느낌이죠. 남잔데 나두 일어나서 뛰고 싶은…아니아니. 난 남잔데…무슨 소리야? ㅋㅋㅋ

A stroke of genius, and a great splash of colors that makes a perfect palette against which to pose those girls-just-wanna-have-fun girly leap-flips into the air. Cyndi Lauper would be proud. Heck, they make me almost wanna stand up and do a girly jump in the air. Almost.

언니! 너무 멋지당! 스타일도 좋고 그리고 진짜 80년대보다 현재의 레트로 룩은 더 좋은 거지. 스타일리스트의 능력이 있는 만큼 뮤직비디오는 좋은 걸 바래요. 그렇다면 진짜 어떤 80년의 분위기, 유행을 다시 좋아하게 된 걸 인정해야 되겠네요. .

Girls, you’re looking GREAT! I love the style, since you’re doing the retro better than the original! I hope your videos are as good as your new stylists; if it is, I may just have to admit that I like seeing some of the 80’s come back.
