It was really funny to see this in Hongdae. You’ve seen the “Free Hugs” video campaign, right?
After that video, Korea got one of its own. And watching a people not really used to hugging or public displays of affection giving it out freely in the street was moving in its own way, I must say.
Everyone knows that people copy each other quite a bit here in Korea. So I was pretty disappointed to see this come to Korea and become commercialized. When you have scantily-clad “narrator-models” giving out “Free Hugs” to mostly old men who really, really enjoyed them, the sexual vibe just didn’t seem cool. Or the CGV employees I saw holding up neatly-printed “Free Hugs” signs in the lobby of theaters for their own advertising. I never saw anyone actually go up to get one, thank goodness. It was just too awkward and fake. Corporate suits sure know how to ruin a pure-hearted idea.
But despite the inherent awkwardness, seeing these middle school kids giving it a shot sure warmed the heart.
They’re cute, right? They’re like a “Free Hugs” brigade, no? But without being scary or threatening, of course. A love “brigade.” Too bad we don’t have any of those, like an “army of good intentions.” Now, that’s an army I wouldn’t mind sending anywhere in the world.
We’ve reached our first major milestone!
For the first time, our site has solidly surpassed the 10,000+ monthly unique visitors mark, or 40,000+ page views (hits) per month. Our podcast’s XML file (the main address) was accessed 5,500 times last month, and we are not even updating it regularly. Now is the time to add better and more regular Korean content to the site and really move things into second gear, to bring in more Korean visitors and get the word about our site here in Korea, where we are actually based. We are working hard to get a solid Korean columnist or two, as well as a VJ with charm and wit. We hope that you will work hard to help us find good people, and to spread the word about the site. But right now, we just want to take a moment to…celebrate! Don’t you feel good? I know I sure do! Whoo hoo!

“Street Peeps” are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, “Who are you and what do you do?” Perhaps it’s their fashion; perhaps it’s their attitude; often, it’s just a feeling that there’s something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do, and we bring them to you.
A gaggle of giddy middle school girls heads off to celebrate a birthday, cake and decorations in tow. Happy birthday, er, one of you!

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
Josh: This is true, I’m seeing a lot more of this style coming out in the last year and it does look quite nice. I’m curious, how do you convince pedestrians to pose for a photo in the street? I’ve...
Hanyu: did you take those pics urself? Nice really like their styles
FMS: Ah – you like the traditional, domestic Korean looks, do ya? Actually, they tend to draw my eye as well, as you can probably tell. Thanks for coming in !
bekah: Really great photography My favourites are the pink couple and the girl jumping in the belted cardigan.
aya: at least asian fashion isnt as boring as american fashion.. in america people all look the same lol! no individuality and such.. its like people are CLONES.. no personal style..
FMS: Thanks for the kudos! We’re trying to up our game, to offer the best possible coverage of Seoul fashion, as well as the most artistic and top-quality pictures. The way I see it, why take pictures of beautiful...
techxinsider: I’m digging the last one a lot. This is a really fun blog, thanks for snapping those photos.
techxinsider: really digging the last photo with the purple shoes. I’m actually curious about Japanese, China, and other Asian countries to see whether there are similarities and of course to see the differences.....
cherbear: Wow the sandals with sock trend is definitely new to me, I just always through it was one of those fashion faux pas type things, but these girls pull off the trend quite well. The spring look that two girls are...
angie: aya! that’s kinda harsh, i mean they’re little girls for chrissake. i think they’re really cute and yubin can probably rap better than most girls in america. having seen them at this weekend at the...
pearls: Just came across your site today via Keena’s Crusade via Seoul to Soul. I’ve been reading a lot about black expats, their exciting experiences, and adjustments abroad. Living in the windy city has...
FMS: Probably not! I also like photographing the attendees, although I’m trying to get the runway shows up so we can be a good source for others who need the pictures (and get us more linking), while giving the...
blueberry: I find the actual photos of people (attendees) at the shows more interesting than the clothes the models are wearing. Am I the only one?
Fiona: It seriously pisses me off that the English section did not offer the Full Day Tickets like the korean section did.
James: Do you think you’d ever have a place anywhere near the runway at Tokyo Fashion week? I imagine you would not even be near a show.
Niki: Hi just wondering if anyone can help me with info on the fashion wholesale market in Seoul? Thanks.
NTfeel: haha good point about about the Tokyo Fashion Week! are they selling tickets on Gmarket or anywhere else online available for international purchase?
Brian: Yes, and this is the case at pretty much every other event in the country. Which I would have no problem with—hey, this is Korea, you should learn the language—if organizers and government officials...
Eunice: Aw man, I saw the title and thought you guys were doing another promotion for a free ticket to a fashion show. But yeah. Another “Oh, Korea” moment. ><
Kiss My Kimchi: Hey, thanks for this tip. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get tickets!
Kenji: hmm this is interesting considering that the vast majority of photos i’ve looked at on here contain women with very full and beautiful figures. and by full I mean at average height 5’7 130-135 lbs....
Mike: I love asian girls. I love red heads. Two of my favorite things combined. I do agree eyebrows need dying as well. I can overlook that though. Second girl is just oh so yummy…
Polimatu: Hi!! Im from Chile… but now Im in South Korea Studying (Political Sceince in Korea University, Seoul), I really want to go to some Fashion Festival.. someone can say me when there is one??? Thanks!!
Tim: Sorry – but about your friend, the jewlery designer. I did some some myself but have never found out where to buy materials in Korea or a jewerly kiln. Where does she do her work?
DavidS: All right, you know I’ve gone on about the watermarks before. This is the last I’ll mention it. Except to say, you might consider offering a wallpaper pack for people like me who would be willing to pay...
Seoul Lust: wow….impressive!!! good luck with the partnerships..I hope everything works out well! seoulust.blogspot.com ^^
