한국에서는 이런 시선으로만 자기 자신을 보는 여성들이 너무 많다. 거의 내가 모든 알고 있는 한국 여성친구는 '난 다이트 중'이나 '살 빼야 된다'고 항상 말해버리는 거예요. 다들 정상 몸인데도. 설마 진짜로 바싼 테레비전에서 나오는 사람들처럼 똑같이 되려고 하나? 아니면 다 포토샵으로 완전히 특수효과로 미인이 된 모델? 그 건 현실인가? 우리 사랑하는 독자 손님: 혹시 거울에 볼 때 혹시 이 비디오에서 나오는 여자처럼 자기 이미지를 그 시선으로 보는 건가?

We originally posted about this back on April 14th, but now the video has been getting a lot of attention in the Korean blogosphere as well. Wonder if that's any coincidence? Our original post:

There are too many women looking at themselves like this in Korea. Amongst all my female friends, the majority of them are constantly calling themselves "fat" or talking about their diet. Does everyone really think they need to actually look like the people they watch on TV, or the Photoshopped models they see in the magazines? Is this reality? Dear reader, you don't see this when you look in the mirror, do you?

Our site wants to wish Korea's first astronaut Yi Soyeon good luck! She's going into space tomorrow and we're behind her all the way. 이 사람은 전설적인 DJ 키드 카프리. 옛날부터 유명한 DJ였는데 이렇게 믹싱과 스크래칭을 할 수 있는 사람들이 많이 없죠? 휴. 옛날에 내가 고등학생으로써 house party에 갔을 때 생각나네요. 이런 DJ를 보기 쉬웠을 때였고 "CD"이란 것은 신기한 거였을 때이죠.

이렇게 왜곡된 "美"의 대한 관념을 갖게 되는 거네요. 한국은 바로 그 거아닌가요? 아주 심한 케이스이죠?

"Onslaught" is certainly the word for it, especially in Korea.

Normally we here at fms love the fun fashion commentary at Go Fug Yourself. They're cool, they're hip, and they're usually spot on. But we must cry foul at their foul call for Sandra Oh's dress for the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards.

보통 우리 FMS 사람들은 Go Fug Yourself의 재미있는 패션 논평을 정말 좋아합니다. 멋지고, 앞서가며, 주로 딱 맞거든요. 하지만 우리는 Sandra 오의 SAG 시상식드레스에게 파울을 외친 Fug에게 파울을 외쳐야겠어요.

Korean stars have been wearing hanbok on the red carpet for some time now domestically, and some stars like Lee Young-ae have even showed it off at major international festivals like Cannes:

한국 스타들이 국내 레드카펫 위에서 한복을 입은 지는 꽤 됐어요. 그리고 이영애와 같은 몇 명의 스타들은 카느스와 같은 국제 이벤트에서 까지도 한복의 자태를 뽐냈어요.

So it's good that the hanbok is getting some exposure. But not enough apparently, because somebody decided to rip poor Sandra a new one, comparing the stylized bow to the sort of thing you see tied around fancy cars in silly commercials during the holiday season. An apology soon followed, but still . . . is it a bad dress? My Gomishin-clad self saw it and immediately thought, "Dang, that's a great modernized hanbok!" The colors and fabric are fabulous, and the stylized cut and drape still manages to be immediately identifiable as a hanbok, unlike some other modernized versions I've seen parading down runways. Yeah the bow is a little big in the first shot, but if we take a look at it from another angle:

따라서, 한복이 노출되는 것은 좋은 거에요. 하지만 충분하지 않나 봐요. 왜냐면 누군가가 Sandra에게 새로운 것을 만들어주기로 했거든요, 스타일화된 리본을 홀리데이 시즌에 나오는 우스운 광고 속 우아한 차들에게 묶여있을 법한 것들과 비교하면서 말이에요. 곧바로 사과는 했지만, 그래도… 정말 그것이 나쁜 드레스였나요?저는 보자마자 "와! 정말 멋지고 세련된 한복이다!" 라고 생각했어요. 색과 옷감도 멋지고, 스타일화된 컷과 드레이프는 그래도 한눈에 한복이라고 알아볼 수 있을 만해요, 보통 런웨이를 거닐던 다른 모던화된 한복들에 비해서요. 그래요, 솔직히 말해서 리본이 첫번째 사진에서는 조금 크네요. 하지만 다른 각도에서 보면…

That's pretty darned elegant. And are those pockets??? I want a hanbok with pockets!!!

This announcement is mostly for our Korean readers, but FMS is also involved in another project called 폭탄영어, which translates to "Bomb English." This is a site designed to offering Koreans – who are burdened with an English education system that emphasizes grammar and vocabulary over actual communication – a way to practice real English in an interesting way. Each week, there is a conversation that is fresh, frank, and about something actually interesting, with a transcript of the conversation created and made available on the site. Nice, huh? Well, the show's new, and we're only just begun. Even if English language education isn't for you, it's a nice talk show about topics in Korean society, and perhaps something you might recommend to your Korean friends trying to improve their English!
