1 toe logic

Jul 20, 2007 Author: MissKoco | Filed under: Street Runway, Trends

Why do some women only paint the big toe? I never saw this trend until I came to Korea, so I asked around. Here are some of the answers:

The big toe is big.

You don’t really see the toes.

It’s an older style.

It’s better than nothing.

Walking around Hyehwa this past weekend I saw lots of one toe examples - on young women.

Img 7559 Copy

Many used bright colors or even neon polish, and they wore shoes that showed all of their toes… and that only brought MORE attention to their ONE toe. I still don’t quite understand this trend, so feel free to add your suggestions as to why women do this in the comments.

The New Style

Untitled-1 Copy-1

I saw these casual wedges a couple weeks ago in Apkujeong, but then saw something similar 4 times yesterday. I’d say that makes them pretty good candidates for being called an official trend. If you’re into this sort of style, that is.

A nice dress, but…

Jul 10, 2007 Author: FMS | Filed under: Fashion in Focus, Street Runway

Img 3351 Copy

I really like this dress. Yet, the shoes are…umm…gross. The dress is a whiff of elegance in that it seems to flow down her form and on down the street with her, but these silver clogs with the big ribbons on them – eww. And although the bag isn’t hideous, it’s not a great choice, either. Sure, it’s not totally horrible, girlfriend, but you did go to the trouble to pick up that nice, billowy “one-piece” and try to put together an ensemble, so maybe think about the “feeling” of the different parts more? Just a friendly suggestion – otherwise, that dress is just fabu-loso!

Breaking the Rules!

Jun 27, 2007 Author: FMS | Filed under: Fashion Check!, Fashion in Focus, Just Funny, Street Runway

Img 6817 Copy

Img 6815 DtlImg 6820 Copy

Img 6840 Copy

Usually, a good rule to follow – as LuxuryGirl made note of – is that of not exceeding 3 colors in an outfit. There’s a lot of that in Korea. Too many patterns, too many colors, too much going on. But the young lady above gets away with it.

Why? Because the candy-like variation of her colors is the point of the outfit, she does it on purpose, and the amounts of color are fairly even, and she doesn’t vary materials. She looks like a Lifesavers roll. Her light-colored accessories don’t get in the way, even though they don’t all technically match each other – in fact, between her manicure, pedicure, shoes, necklace, and earrings, she all over the place – it all works out, since the brightness of the colors is the main thing, and everything else just needs to get out of the way.

Let us just not do this.

Have Hat, Will Travel

Jun 26, 2007 Author: FMS | Filed under: Fashion in Focus, Street Runway, Uncategorized

Img 8711 CopyImg 8707 Copy

Wow! A hat! In this day and age. I love the fact you’re wearing it, love the fabulosity you’re trying to achieve, love the style. Except…just one thing…and I hate to say it – the bag is a bit, umm…off. Not so much the color, but the style, the feel. It looks very modern and sleek, and not in keeping with the “fresh spring day” look you seem to be going for.

So while the examples below are not perfect selections, I thought a switch of materials might be a good idea, and although the colors or styles might not be perfect, they are some things to think about, and might be good suggestions to start with if you look around the Internet with new concepts in mind to find a bag that will match better.

I say – think natural, think breezy, think straw, think similar material and feel as your shoes. And you’ll be airy as that spring day feeling you’re trying to channel. Good luck, girlfriend!

Picture 4-4Picture 5-1

Fashion Police Metal-2

Debbie Does Dallas

Sometimes, life on the fashion beat is tough. Just like the rest of the world, even fashion crimes can’t be judged in black-and-white terms. And cases like the one we face today make that clear.

Now, we know that a lot of the English-language t-shirts worn by fashionable fashionistas in Korea have some mistakes or even just plain don’t make sense – linguistically. And that’s fine. We’re talking about how it looks, not the proper conjugation of verbs, after all. And Americans had all kinds of bad French on t-shirts in the 1980’s, so who am I to point fingers?

But sometimes, as an American, I just want to stop people on the street and ask them if they know the message they’re carrying, the irony or the humor that the words on their shirt do unfortunately bring.
Well, there aren’t any problems with the design, shape, and or title graphics. On a fashion level, it’s all looking pretty good. The problem is with where it come from:

Debbiedallasjan06 Dtl

This is the movie title to one of the most popular American porno films of the 1970’s. It’s the exact same symbol and title, down to the football. Since she’s out walking with mom, apparently, in the shot above, I doubt she knows the meaning of the Debbie character who apparently…umm…”does Dallas.” Below is the official movie poster. :-)

Debbiedallasjan06

Girlfriend with the t-shirt in the street picture above probably has no idea, right? Do you think she would care if she knew? Or do you think she knows, or that this is common knowledge, and hence, has a feisty spunk flavor to the t-shirt?

A Touch of Pink

Touch Of Pink
A flash of silver, white, and pink accents on a summer night in Hongdae. /

Wow – a fashion trend that the newspapers are finally getting right! According to MyDaily, stars are wearing their t-straps to great effect:

 2007 06 12 200706121001061115 2

 2007 06 12 200706121001061115 1

Well, we’re seeing t-straps in the streets of Seoul, too. Here’s a trend that actually seems to be trickling down, as opposed to one pushed by fashion columns but will never find real traction, i.e. the wedges “trend.” That was a trend in the minds of marketers simply assuming that high fashion and foreign trends would translate over to the Korean street. I knew they wouldn’t.

And the t-strap heels I’ve been seeing, like the ones above, also have an “ethnic” or exotic feel to them, especially the more elaborate and/or metallic they get.

Img 2609 CopyImg 2606 Copy-1Modelcopy

Img 3694 CopyImg 3932 Copy

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
