OK. It pains me to do this, but I present this for your consideration.

And there really wasn’t anything wrong with this couple’s fashion per se. But the issue is that of sandals and stockings. Discuss amongst yourselves!

OK — I know there will be debate about this picture and people may get on my case for it, since she’s not really matching, sporting anything designer, and may just be all over the place in terms of shoes, bag, top, and kinda ratty miniskirt. Still, there’s something very “ghetto fabulous” about the look, perhaps working in that there’s a certain confidence and self-conscious fabulousness to it, especially when one looks at the oversized, white star earrings and spaghetti straps, two things that are particularly risque about her look in Korea, especially since she reveals both shoulders. Another point that she has going for her — another reason I found this picture interesting — is her sporting just the right shade of coral pink, which I am declaring the official color of the Korean summer™ this year (but will talk about in another post). So is she ghetto fab or just ghetto? Is this a crazy picture? Chime in.

I don’t know when it got like this, but it’s not just adult women walking around in short skirts anymore, but even uniformed schoolgirls. While this may not be news somewhere like Japan, Korean high school girls have been held to stricter dress codes, both in the school and on the streets. Nowadays, the power of kids as consumers and much more sophisticated adults than they used to be even 10 years ago has made them chomp at the bit in terms of not just consumption, but in terms of asserting a sexual identity as a “woman” as quickly as possible.

Korea certainly isn’t Japan, but now Korean girls are rolling up their skirts on the street, too, even though it doesn’t quite have the stylized effect it does in Japan. Yet it’s sending a similar statement: with the expensive cellphones, fancy MP3 players, brand-name sneakers, and even the trendy “Fashion Week Promotional Bag” that adult fashionistas are sporting these days, Korean high school girls are steady pushing the boundaries of “girl” into that of “woman,” even as Korean society refuses to recognize this change. If I were their age today, I’d be confused. “Am I a kid? Or an adult?” Society expects them to be both, even as it tells them to stick to their roles and scolds them for stepping out of it. Yet, kids aren’t blind, and they behave accordingly. “Buy like a woman, but act like a girl” seems to be the message. But people don’t follow such convenient and contradictory rules as exactly as they’re told.

You mean this kinda suit?

IMG_2830 copy

Actually, this one’s not that bad, since he’s working it casual style, kinda trying to walk with a pimp limp. Don’t know about the shoes, but it’s cut kinda fly, with attitude — like the lapels. But I know what you mean — nowadays, conservative, boring stiffs all get the shiny suit and think they’re styling. It was new and kinda cool like 4 years ago, when only a few folks were doing the shiny thing and pushing the boundaries, but now…lame. This fad seems to be dying…slowly. When it does, the real playas can reclaim their shine.

I love the bag. Any ideas where it’s from? A little reader challenge and some help. Comments please!

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

--- Coco Chanel (1883–1971)

"Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

--- Yves Saint Laurent (b. 1936)

What is SEXY?

"Darling, the legs aren't so beautiful, I just know what to do with them."

--- Marlene Dietrich (1901–1992)

What is TALENT?

"I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing 'Funny Face' when I couldn't sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.”

---Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)
