왜 이렇게 되는지 모르겠는데 어른만 짧게 입고 다니는 것아니고 학생까지도 그렇게 다니는 거네요. 특히 이번 시즌부터 학교에서 나오면 아주 타이트한 교복의 블러우스를 풀고 밑에 티셔츠를 노출하고 그리고 치마를 높이 올리고 그렇게 다니는 거예요. 역시 한국사회에서 애들이 점점 소비자들이 되면서 — 전자재품부터 화장과 파마까지 — 자기 자신을 어른으로 보게 되는 법이죠. 점점 고딩들이 빨리 ‘아가씨’가 되고 싶어하는 거죠.

I don’t know when it got like this, but it’s not just adult women walking around in short skirts anymore, but even uniformed schoolgirls. While this may not be news somewhere like Japan, Korean high school girls have been held to stricter dress codes, both in the school and on the streets. Nowadays, the power of kids as consumers and much more sophisticated adults than they used to be even 10 years ago has made them chomp at the bit in terms of not just consumption, but in terms of asserting a sexual identity as a “woman” as quickly as possible.

한국은 일본아니다. 그리고 교복치마는 교복치마잖아요. 무슨 ‘세일러문’처럼 나오는 치마아니니까 아무리 높이 올려도 결국은 촌스러운 것이잔하아요. 휴. 여고딩들이 유행을 다 타네요. 비싼 핸드폰, MP3기, 브랜드 운동화, 그리고 이번에 인기 많은 “Fashion Week Promotional Bag”까지 들고 다니는 거네요. 잘 살고 있네요, 요즘의 애들이. 휴. 근데 아직은 한국사회가 이 변함을 인정 안하려고 그래요. 나 지금 학생이었으면 진짜 헷갈렸겠다. 난 미성년인가? 어른인가? 사회가 둘다 기대하니까 진짜 힘드는 것같아요. “어른 소비자로 살며서도 소녀처럼 행동을 해라’고 그런 메세지 맏잖아요. 그런데 인간들이 그런 모순적인 명령을 잘 따라하지 않잖아요.

Korea certainly isn’t Japan, but now Korean girls are rolling up their skirts on the street, too, even though it doesn’t quite have the stylized effect it does in Japan. Yet it’s sending a similar statement: with the expensive cellphones, fancy MP3 players, brand-name sneakers, and even the trendy “Fashion Week Promotional Bag” that adult fashionistas are sporting these days, Korean high school girls are steady pushing the boundaries of “girl” into that of “woman,” even as Korean society refuses to recognize this change. If I were their age today, I’d be confused. “Am I a kid? Or an adult?” Society expects them to be both, even as it tells them to stick to their roles and scolds them for stepping out of it. Yet, kids aren’t blind, and they behave accordingly. “Buy like a woman, but act like a girl” seems to be the message. But people don’t follow such convenient and contradictory rules as exactly as they’re told.

사실, 이 건 나쁘지 않네요. 원래 입어야 하는대로 약간 캐주얼하게 하는 거고 진짜 라펠과 모양은 좋고…구두는 모르겠지만. ㅋㅋㅋ 그래도 요즘에 20대 남자들이 너무 이 빤짝빤짝하는 양복 스타일로 다 하니까 지겨워졌고 원래 4여년전에 이렇게 입고 다니려면 진짜 자신감이 필요했을 때랑 다른단 말이죠. 일단 요즘에 이 유행은 끝나고 있는 것같아요. 드디어. 완전히 죽으면 원래 멋쟁이 신사들이 원래부터 가졌던 빤작빤짝하는 매력을 다시 잡을 수 있을 것같아요.

Actually, this one’s not that bad, since he’s working it casual style, kinda trying to walk with a pimp limp. Don’t know about the shoes, but it’s cut kinda fly, with attitude — like the lapels. But I know what you mean — nowadays, conservative, boring stiffs all get the shiny suit and think they’re styling. It was new and kinda cool like 4 years ago, when only a few folks were doing the shiny thing and pushing the boundaries, but now…lame. This fad seems to be dying…slowly. When it does, the real playas can reclaim their shine.

“더 짧게 더 아찔하게 쇼트 반바지에 쏙 반하다”고 아시아경제에서 나왔네요. 출근할 때 핫팬츠?! 동감? 한국은 진짜 특이하네요. ㅋㅋㅋ 하야튼 요즘에 한국여자들이 쇼트 반바지에 쑥 반한한 거네요.

This article, entitled “Getting More Giddy over Shorter Pants,” and published in the Asian Economic Daily (Korean), even tells us that short pants can be good for workwear, too. Do you think so? Or isn’t this cutting things a bit short? Whatever the case, short pants and hot pants in all forms are indeed abound on the streets of Seoul.

이 친구들이 너무 이쁘게 옷을 입은 거죠? 특히 원피스는 바로 여름이란 느낌이다. 그리고 산달은 너무 이쁜데 한국에서 처음 봤어요. 법적인 것 때문에 얼굴을 잘라야 되니까 액세서리를 잘 안보이는데도 귀거리 하나 나오는데 진짜 코디 잘한 사람이죠. 가방은 모르겠지만. 그래도 둘이 너무 이쁘지 않은가? Fresh!

Gotta say I loved these two looks. It just says summer, it says cool, and the minidress is fly. And these strappy sandals are new to my eye this summer, and really work. Gotta love the earring, too, although since I have to cut out the face for legal reasons, you can’t see how well she coordinated. She looked great. Don’t know about the bag, though. Black. Hmm. Still — freshness, I say!

진짜 길거리들을 보니까 서울의 패션은 화려해지고 있네요.

Things are getting more colorful on the streets of Seoul.

위에와 밑에 사진들을 보면 20년대 구두, 콘버스 신발, 그리고 화려한 운동화과 구두끈은 인기 있고 그리고 일반적으로도 화려한 컬러는 유행이에요.

As you can see in the pictures above and below, shoes from the 20’s, Converses, and bright sneakers/shoelaces are all the rage, along with bright colors in general.

근데 아무리 변하거나 개방화되거나 항상 살아있는 보수적이고 여성스러운 스타일이 (“demure look”이란 글을 보세요) 있어요.

And as much as the fashions change, there is still a conservative, girlish look (which we’ve talked about before as “the demure look”) that will never die.

그래도 한국에서는 위에 보수적이라도 밑에는 높은 공그른 단으로 되는 경향이 있어요.

Even the more traditionally feminine styles still tend towards a high hemline.

한국에서는 ‘스키니진‘과 레깅스의 유행이 영원히 남아 있을 것같아요. 많은 한국여자의 다리의 피부는 얼굴만큼 clear하지 않아서 스타킹을 많이 쓰고 (서양에서는 많이 안 쓰는 만큼) 그리고 투명하지 않은 레깅스를 신으면 부담없이 짧은 스커트를 입을 수 있으니까 완전히 사라질 유행아니라 계속 있을 룩이예요.

Here are some variations of casual fashion, where skinny jeans and leggings still rule. Because leggings allow skirts to go higher without seeming too risque, and they also cover the often not-so-clear skin that comes with many Korean women’s legs, they are permanent fixtures, just as stockings never died in Korea and Japan.

More casual styles, where you see the different influences mixing. Even above, the trends criss-cross and overlap; there is no pure, singular influence. You can see a lot of jeans and denim materials, which I use to define as “casual.”

또 꼭 진의 소재없더라도 여러가지 다른 캐주얼한 스타일들이 있어요. 한국에서는 미국만큼 완전한 ‘캐주얼’이란 개념이 없고 (신경 하나도 안쓰는 정도로 진과 티셔츠를 입는 사람들이 많은데) 한국에서는 편의점으로만 가도 화장품을 하는 사람들이 있는 문화이에요.

But there are all kinds of ways to be “casual” without wearing jeans. The notion of “casual” isn’t as strong as in the US, since that’s a culture in which many people don’t wear much more than a t-shirt and jeans on the everyday level, while Korea is a culture in which many put on makeup to go to the grocery store.

좀 섞어 있는 캐주얼과 포멀(정장)한 룩도 있어요. 한국에서는 아무리 캐주얼이나 정장하지 않은 옷을 입더라도 신발은 기본으로 구두예요. 하이힐을 많이 신고. 요즘의 인기있는 귀여운 ‘플랫’구두는 한국여성들이랑 잘 어울리고 영원히 있을 스타일이고요. 요즘에 20년대 ‘플래퍼’(flapper)의 룩은 유행이니까 긴 목거리도 쓰는 거예요.

Sometimes, you add a different top and a jacket, and it’s a mix of casual and “dressed up.” I think one major dividing line is defined by flats, especially ballet flats. Add the popular, flapper-inspire beady necklaces in vogue these days, a nicer top, or a shiny pump or high heel sandal, and you start to straddle the line.

In many situations, blacks, whites, and grays are still the old fallback in Korea for people who want to keep it simple and safe. Here we’ve got some black with little bolts of color.

이 소식이 new아닐 수 있는데 화려한 컬러는 너무나 많이 볼 수 있어요. 길거리에서 그리고 런웨이에서도 그렇더라고요. 그 걸 보니까 이번 봄부터 화려해질 것같고 그리고 가을, 겨울에 추워질수록 뚜거운 스타킹과 코트 입을 때는 더 화려해질 것같아요. 여름에는 화려한 신발과 미니원피스들이 bright colors으로 나올 듯하네요.

Now, this may not be news to some of by now, but the bright colors are steadily hitting the streets this spring, and if the runway shows were any indication, will be in even stronger effect in the colder months, when tights and bright coats provide stronger colors in addition to warmth.

이번 F/W 2008 서울패션위크의 쇼들 사이에 인터뷰한 아주 화려한 1학년생이랑 조금 얘기 나누었어요. 파란색, 노란색, 하얀색, 그리고 핑크색을 잘 코디하니까 궁금했었거든요.

A well-done and representative case was found in a young lady we interviewed at Seoul Fashion Week F/W/2008, who was coordinating blues, yellows, whites, and pinks.

진짜 잘 아는 것같았어요. 왜냐하면 조금 잘못하면 진짜 이상하게 나올 수 있으니까. 그런 화려한 색깔들을 코디하는 건 불장난같네요. 잘 못 하면 남의 눈이 아프거든요.

She knew what she was doing, since those bright elements are no joke to play with, nor were her blue tights, which were positively blinding.

With colors that bright, you’re playing with fire — it’s easy to burn yourself and the eyes of those around you. Yet, she was doing a good job.

패션쇼를 다는 사람들 중에 colorful하게 입는 사람들이 많았고 그리고 길거리에서도 많이 볼 수 있ㅇㅓㅆ죠.

We found a lot of colorful people at the show, as well as people on the streets.

아무리 생각해도 역시 한국패션이 그냥 안전하고 재밌없는 흑백만 입는 시대에서 많이 벗어나는 거네요.

Whatever one’s preferences, one should note that Korean women are definitely moving away from mere black-and-white.

여기는 패션쇼를 끝나고 지하철에서 만나게 된 화려한 미녀이에요.

Here’s a young lady we bumped into on the subway on the way out from one of the week’s shows.

개인적으로 많이 좋아하는 찍었던 사진을 생각나게 하네요. 비슷한 blue-white의 컨셉으로 표현된 거죠.

It reminds me of one of the best pictures we took with us from that week, which had a similar blue-and-white theme.

요즘에 파란색, 파스텔, 그리고 네온색깔 들이 많이 눈에 띄는 것같아요. 우리 독자 친구들도 안 그래요?

These days, it seems a lot of blues, pastels, and neon colors seem to be striking my eye. You all noticing the same thing?

그리고 미니원피스와 짧은 자켓을 같이 입는 걸 봤어요. 여기는 같은 드레스, 다른 컨셉.

The same can be said for color minidresses with black or white short jackets. Same dress, different concepts.

조앤에 의하면 이 룩을 대구에서 많이 봤대요. 거기서 완전한 유행이라고요.

Joanne said she noticed a lot of that down in Taegu. I’d like to hear more about this.

역시 런웨이쇼에서도 화려하게 옷은 입으면 진짜 남들보다 눈에 확 띄는 거네요! 흠. 이런 계속 돌아오는 80년대 패션을 생각하면 웬지 Cyndi Lauper의 생각도 나네요.

In the end, colors sure do help you stand out from the crowd, even during a runway show. Wow. Thinking about this continuing 80’s trend, I can’t help but think of Cyndi Lauper.

우리 FMS하면 길거리 패션이에요, 뭐가 hot한지 말이에요. 그렇다고 우리가 서울 패션 위크를 빠져먹을 순 없죠, 안 그래요? 우리는 런웨이 쇼들에 가서 패션의 원산지를 봐요. 하지만 우리는 주로 어떻게 런웨이의 하이 패션이 길거리 패션으로 해석되는지에 더 관심이 있죠.

We here at FMS are about the fashion of the street, what’s hot right now. But we can’t miss Seoul Fashion Week, right? We go to the runway shows and keep up with fashion at its source — the runways of high fashion — but we are mostly concerned with how this will eventually translate into the styles of the street.

우리가 패션 위크에 참석할 때, FMS는 런웨이 쇼만 보는 것이 아니에요. 우리는 패션 리더들을 보고 무엇을 입고 있는지 봐요. 뭐가 길거리에서 인기인지 벤치마킹 하는 데에 패션 쇼 만큼 좋은 장소가 어딨나요? 그래서 우리는 관중들 중에 튀는 패션과 스타일을 가진 분들의 사진을 찍기 시작했죠.

When we attend fashion week, FMS looks at more than just the runway shows — we look at the fashion leaders and what they’re wearing. What better place than a fashion show to benchmark what’s hot on the street as well? So, we started taking pictures of members of the crowd whose fashion and style caught our eye.

이 아가씨는 귀여운 스타일을 멋스럽게 뽐내고 있었죠. 너무 과도하지 않지도 않았고, 정말로 귀여워 보이는걸요?

This young lady was rocking the cutesy style in just the right way — it wasn’t annoyingly saccharine, and actually worked.

분홍 물방울 무늬 신발을 소화할 수 있는 것은 그녀 뿐이 아닐까 싶네요. 아! 그리고 분홍색 얘기가 나온 김에…

Only she could pull off pink shoes with pink polka-dot bows. Whoa! And speaking of pink…

우리는 이 분홍색과 흰색 패턴의 대담한 옷을 발견했죠. 이 끝내주는 신발들과 함께요!

We spotted this fierce outfit — just pink and white and patterns — with some shoes that wouldn’t quit.

그녀는 디자이너가 아니라고 말했어요, 그렇게 비싸지 않았단 말이죠. 여기서 같은 신발이 한 켤레 더 보이기도 했어요. 하지만 우리는 누가 훨씬 더 잘 소화했는지 알죠! 비교할 필요도 없다구요.

She said they weren’t designer, meaning they weren’t expensive, and we did spot another pair of them in the line. But we know who really rocked them better! No need to even compare.

어떤 아가씨가 알록달록한 스크린 앞에서 포즈를 취하는 게 눈에 뛰었어요. 그래서 우리는 그녀의 작은 카메라로 나오는 것보다 더 좋은 사진을 찍어주기로 했죠. 우리는 그녀가 유행하는 트렌드들을 가지고 - 화려한 프린트 미니드레스, 밝은색의 스타킹, 부츠, 미래풍 메탈릭 재킷 – 그리고 모두 같이 어울러지게 대담하게 입고 있었죠. 한국 거리에서는 조금 특이한 색과 재료를 가지고 말이에요. 보면 볼수록 그녀의 펑키적 매력에 끌리는걸요!

We spotted this young lady posing in front of a colorful façade, where we decided to give her a better picture than the one she was taking with her small camera. We liked how she had taken some prevailing trends — the colorful print minidresses, bright stockings, booties, and “futurist” metallic jacket — and was working them together in a very brave way, with colors and materials that were a bit unusual for the Korean street. The more one looks, the more one likes and respects her funkiness.

색도 사랑스럽고, 백도 사랑스럽고, 포즈마저도 사랑스럽네요! 이 모두 포즈는 그녀가 즉석에서 직접 해낸 거에요. 그리고 두 트렌드의 조화 – 크게 유행을 탄 부츠와, 좀 덜 유행을 탄 (그리고 대개 실패하는) 모카신 – 둘은 정말 잘 어울렸어요. 펑키하면서도 자연스러운 색상으로…

Love the colors, love the bag, and love the pose! That was all done on her own, with no prompting. And the convergence of two trends — the major ones of the booties, the minor (and usually horribly-done) one of moccasins — really came together well. Funky earth tones.

그리고 또 비슷한 자연스러운 색상과 튀는 색상 테마의 믹스! 우리는 쇼가 마친 후 이 아가씨를 보았어요. 두말 할 것없이 멋져요! 그리고 뒤에 멋진 스포트 라이트가 보너스를 더 해줬죠. 이 후에 우리는 밖으로 나가서 정말 캐쥬얼하면서도 색깔있는 사람들을 만났어요.

Along a similar earth-tone/splash-of-color theme, we caught this young lady after a show. Naturally fabulous! And the “kicker” spotlight in the back was an added bonus. Afterwards, we wandered outside, where we bumped into a few more people being very, very casual-yet-colorful this season.

근데 우리가 할말은, 짧은 뱅헤어와 흐르는 머리 스타일이 정말 아름다워요. 뒤에 또 그 스포트 라이트네요. 이 “Goldilocks”천사같죠?

But we must say, the short bangs and flowing locks look is hot. There’s that kicker spotlight again. Isn’t “Goldilocks” angelic?

말이 필요 있나요? 하얀 디테일이 들어간 스웨터, 보라색 토트백, 초록색 칼라까지 다 너무 좋아요! 그리고 등산화와 함께? 어우정말~

Need we even say it? Love the sweater with the white detailing, lavendar tote, and green collar pop! And with hiking boots? Dang, dude!

그리고 그는 요즘 유행하는 둥근 바가지 커트를 하고 있죠. 요새는 앞머리를 이런 식으로 많이 짜르죠, 끝을 부드럽게 해서요. 남자 어린이들에게 가장 흔하긴 하지만, 전반적으로 모던한 느낌을 주는데 더하네요. 우리는 돌아다니면서 핑크앤드화이트를 다시 보고 그녀의 블랙 코트가 그녀의 매력을 가렸다는 걸 느꼈죠. 코트가 없이는 그녀는 정말 환상적이었어요, 사진을 찍어야했죠.

And he’s also sporting the round bowl cut — also known as the “bagaji” or “gourd bowl cut” in Korean — that is very, very popular these days. In fact, most bangs now are cut this way, with feathered edges. Especially in its purest form on many boys, it helps to add a an overall “mod” look. While wandering around, we spied Pink-and-White again, and realized that her black coat had actually hidden her true fabulousness; we hadn’t seen her without the coat, in her full glory. We had to get a shot.

어머나! 눈이부시네요! 그녀가 포즈를 취하기 부끄러워하는게 의아했어요. 왜냐면 모든 이목이 그녀와 그녀의 아름다운 옷에 집중되어 있었거든요. 그리고…

Whoo, girl! You’re blinding me with sheer fabulosity! It was funny that she was so embarrassed to pose, since all eyes were definitely on her in that glorious outfit. And what’s more…

누가 그 핑크앤드화이트가 이 쇼의 모델 중에 한명의 여자친구인걸 알았겠어요? 그리고 아까 Goldilocks의 친구라는것도! 남자 모델이 돌아다니자 조금 소란스러워졌어요.

Who knew that Pink-and-White was the girlfriend of one of the models in the show? And that she was Goldilocks’ friend? And the male model in question did cause some pandemonium once word got out that he was wandering around.

이것이 제가 제일 좋아하는 사진이에요. 핸드폰에 비쳐지는 여자 얼굴이 보이나요? 정말 러키한 샷이네요.

This is my favorite. Notice the girl’s face caught as the reflection in her cellphone. Lucky, lucky shot.

우리는 주차장에서 홍석천도 만났어요. 그는 쿨하게 쉬고 있었죠.

We also bumped into Hong Seok-cheon in the parking lot, who was taking a short break from being absolutely cool.

그도 우리처럼 과자를 먹어요. 왜 근데 홍석천은 먹어도 멋있는걸까요? 흠… 한 봉지를 다 먹진 않을지도 모르죠. 그건 제 문제에요! 그리고 운동건도 있고…

He snacks on junk food just like the rest of us. How come I don’t look like him, though? Well, maybe he doesn’t eat the whole bag. That’s my problem! Then there’s that exercise “thing”…

그리고 마지막으로, 더 화려한 스타킹! 우리는 저번 시즌에서 이런 스타킹 많이 봤는데 이런 스타킹은 정말 대담한 패션 리더들에게만 전해지지 않을까요? 그레이 자켓, 플라워 프린트, 초록색 스타킹, 호피무늬 오픈 펌프? 멋져요 언니! 우리의 눈에 확 들어왔어요, 이 사진 오른쪽에 잡힌 저 여자처럼 말이에요.

Last, but not least, more colorful stockings! We saw a lot of this from last season, and one wonders if this will translate down past just the fashion leaders and truly brave? Gray jacket, flower print, green stockings, and leopard-print, open-toed pumps? Sheet. You work it, girl. I know you caught our eyes, just like the girl at the right edge of the picture.

와일드하지만 어울리네요. 귀여워요, 약간 니뽄풍으로… 정말 귀엽고, 색다른 펑키룩이에요.

In the end, wild-yet-it-works. It’s cute, in a Japanese-influenced sort of way. We likey. Very cute, and a different kind of funky look.
