신촌에서 돌아다니고 있었는데 아트레온극장 옆에는 야구할 때에 배팅 케이지에 들어왔어요. 또 발로 치고 주먹으로 때리는 펀칭백도 있었네요. 근데 그 걸 열심히 폭력적으로 때리는 사람들이 여고생들이었네요. 참 재밌었네요!꼭 사진을 찍고 싶었지!

I went to the batting cages near the Artreon Theater, right in the middle between Shinchon and Ehwa stations. One usually sees a bunch of dudes standing around hitting balls, kicking soccer balls hooked up to a meter measuring the force, or alternatively pounding a punching bag. But I was quite amused to find two high school girls just going at it. They were hitting it hard.

Miyongshil (美容室), derived from Chinese characters, literally means beauty shop. Quite on the contrary, however, most miyongshils are more hair salons than beauty shops. Though on top of hair care, miyongshils took care of make-up (including semi-permanent make-up for the less high-scale miyongshils) and eye lash extensions. Depending on the technicians, some miyongshils also catered to customers demanding nail and skin care, or sometimes even hair removal, though those miyongshils were far and few between.

미용실이란 한자에서 유래된 말로 미용을 위한 공간을 뜻한다. 그러나 한국에 있는 많은 미용실들은 전반적인 미용보다도 머리가 전문인 헤어샵에 가깝다. 그렇다고 다른 미용 부분을 완전히 배제하는 것은 아니다. 화장과 속눈썹 연장, 그리고 고가 미용실이 아닌 데에서는 반영구 화장 시술까지 하고 있다. 그리고 드물지만 기술자에 따라 네일과 피부 관리, 또는 제모도 해준다.

Korean ahjoomahs are notorious for being low-maintenance (now I’m not talking about wealthy ahjoomahs in big cities who have no responsibilities), since these women work day and night to bring food to the table for their families. Occasionally, they would go to the miyongshil to get a quick perm, get their eyebrows tattooed with semi-permanent make-up, while gossiping about celebrities and bragging about their children.

한국의 아줌마들을 밤낮으로 일하고 가족을 먹여 살리느라 꾸밀 경제적 또는 시간적 여유가 없어(강남의 돈 많은 아줌마들을 일컫는 게 아니라 진정으로 가정을 위해 피땀 흘리시는 아줌마들…) 잘 꾸미지 않는다는 것은 보편적으로 알려진 사실이다. 그러나 가끔씩 미용실을 가게 되면 아줌마들은 파마를 하고 간혹 반영구화장으로 눈썹을 그리면서 연예인 얘기나 딸 자식 자랑에 심취해 있곤 한다.

Come mid-2000, nail salons became a booming business all over Korea. Prices for manicures and pedicures dropped significantly. Now students, working women, and mothers alike could afford the time and money to drop by for some “me” time.

2000년 중반 국내에 네일 살롱 이라는 게 곳곳에서 눈에 띄었다. 손, 발톱 손질.관리의 가격이 내려가자 학생, 직장인, 어머님들 할 것 없이 자기만의 시간을 즐길 수 있는 공간이 또 하나 생겼다.

Nail salons in Korea are reminiscent of the good old miyongshils, which are still present in many of the smaller towns throughout Korea. Semi-permanent make-up? Check. Waxing? Check. Face massages? Check. Eyelash extensions? Check.

국내에 있는 네일 살롱은 오늘 날까지 아직도 흔히 보이는 미용실과 비슷한 점이 많다. 반영구 화장, 제모, 얼굴 마사지, 속눈썹 연장 같은 각가지 미용 시술들을 하고 있다.

Now I am not usually the one to go to the miyongshil or a nail salon for a head-to-toe beauty treatment. But due to my out-of-control habit of nail-biting, I had to make a visit to my new favorite nail salon.

비록 개인적으로 미용실이나 네일 살롱을 자주 가는 편은 아니지만, 손톱을 깨무는 못된 습관 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 가야 했다. 그것도 동네에서 가장 좋아하는 네일 살롱.

Not only is the environment laid-back and friendly, the ladies there speak multiple languages and have great chemistry together. The lady that always does my (acrylic) nails was born in Bolivia, raised in two different continents and is a well-traveled, multilingual, savvy business woman. Then there is a somewhat trilingual Chinese exchange student who never fails to make me crack up at her bold, in-your-face comments, and all the while maintaining her cute, “baby sister” image. Last but not least, there is a Korean lady who is inexperienced yet works hard to please, and is always trying to learn new phrases in Mandarin from her co-workers.

이 네일 살롱의 분위기는 무척 편안하고 친근하며, 여러 언어를 구사 하는 여직원들의 호흡도 잘 맞는다. 갈 때 마다 아크릴 네일을 담당해주시는 직원은 볼리비아에서 태어났고 여러 나라를 가봤으며 아는 것이 많은 사업가이다. 한 분은 시원 털털한 성격 탓에 손님들을 즐겁게 해주는 여직원 중에서 막내인 중국 유학생, 그리고 열심히 기술과 언어를 배우려는 신참인 한국인 아가씨 한 분도 있다.

This, to me, is what a nail salon, or the spirit of the miyongshil is all about. Women of all ages to relax, let their hair down, and have a good time while getting beautified.

이 것이야 말로 진정한 미용실, 또는 네일 살롱의 의미이다. 연령을 불문하고 여자들 끼리 relax하고 예뻐지는 동안 재미있게 시간을 보낼 수 있는 공간 말이다.

And after two and a half hours of filing and applying chemicals…voila! 두 시간 반 동안 손질한 후…짜잔!

I left the nail salon very satisfied and happy that day.

그 날 매우 흐뭇해하며 네일 살롱을 나섰다.

용산 이마트에서 비키니도 입으면서 5천원짜리 와인을 보고 평생동안 마셔본적이 없는 것처럼 “우와”를 치면서. 그리고 20mm 광각렌즈 때문에 진짜 봉선화에서 나온 것같고. 그래도 아마 그 건 사진작가의 희망한 효과이겠지. 일단 웬지 – 미국놈이라 그런지 – 이 사진을 안좋아하네요. 너무 홍보 스타일이 날 바보로 보는 것처럼. 너무 여성의 몸매를 이용하는 것처럼…

OK, this is a bit silly-looking, isn’t it? Two models pouring $5 wine into a glass in a corner of Emart, and looking as if they’d never seen such a wondrous sight before? I know, I know – pretty girls sell everything in Korea, but the bikinis and hot pants feel like a little much. And the photographer’s 20mm lens make these girls look like giant stick figures; but I guess that was the intent.
