참. 촌스러운 것들을 보면 알아. 밑에 여자도 ‘촌스럽다’고 할 수 있는 것도 알고, 브랜드 옷을 입은 것도 아니고 색도 잘 어울리지 않고 치마도 고급스러워 싸보이는 것은 알아요. 하지만 촌스러워서 오히려 더 예쁜 것도 있잖아요. 정감 있는 듯하고 보기 좋은 것? ㅋㅋ 개인적으로 큰 별모양 귀거리가 맘에 든다. 사실 그 귀걸이 때문에 정감을 느꼈다고 해도 과언이 아니에요. 미국 달동네에서도 그런 정감을 느낄 수 있는 미가 있었어요. 돈도 없고 가짜 명품을 살 돈도 없으니 차라리 화려하고 반짝거려서 눈에 띄는 아이템으로 코디하게 된 것이죠. 특히 80/90년 대에 그런 이유로 그렇게 해서 그냥 “ghetto”(간난한 느낌)보다 “ghetto fabulous”이란 개념이 태어난 거예요. 이중 일부가 대중화가 된 거에요. 가령 섹스엔드씨티에 나온 캐리의 목걸이가 있어요. 원래 이름을 목걸이로 만든 이니셜 목걸이는 지나치게 화려하고 촌스럽다는 느낌을 주었고 따라서 랩비디오에서 먼저 등장했지만 백인 여배우인 캐리가 목걸이를 착용하자 마자 미국의 백인 여성들까지 따라하기 시작하면서 일반 패션 트렌드가 된 거에요. 아래 사진의 유난히 큰 별 귀걸이와 치마도 비슷한 맥락이라고 볼 수 있고. 그리고 또 다른 특징이 있네요. 코랄 핑크색의 홀터넥 탑도 훌륭한 코디인 것 같아요. 이번 시즌의 일등 컬러이기 때문이죠. OK — I know there will be debate about this picture and people may get on my case for it, since she’s not really matching, sporting anything designer, and may just be all over the place in terms of shoes, bag, top, and kinda ratty miniskirt. Still, there’s something very “ghetto fabulous” about the look, perhaps working in that there’s a certain confidence and self-conscious fabulousness to it, especially when one looks at the oversized, white star earrings and spaghetti straps, two things that are particularly risque about her look in Korea, especially since she reveals both shoulders. Another point that she has going for her — another reason I found this picture interesting — is her sporting just the right shade of coral pink, which I am declaring the official color of the Korean summer™ this year (but will talk about in another post). 이 사람을 아나? ‘비즈 마키’이라고. 1989년도에 이 노래가 나왔을 때 난 고등학생였지. 그때는 랩이란 음악이 아직도 백인 사회한테 제대로 인정을 안받을 때였어. MTV에 의하면 ‘음악아니다’고 그런 주장이 있었고 대중문화화 되고 있었을 때쯤이였어. 거의 이 비디오를 보려면 ‘흑인 엔터테인멘트 방송’(Black Entertainment Television)이란 채널 봐야한 거였어.

비즈 마키이는 열정적이고 창조적인 랩 노래를 만든 대단한 가수이며 제일…뭐랄까…못생기면서도 매력적이라고 그런 말이 많은 거야. 그를 싫어하는 사람이 없었지. 착한 이미지이니까. 그리고 우리 10대들이 다 이해하루 수 있는 노래한 거야: “Just a Friend.” 그 말은 ‘그냥 친구’이라고 의미한 거고 어떤 좋아하는 여우같은 여자가 속이는 말이지. 딱 다른 남자랑 걸렸는데 ‘아. 그 사람이 그냥 친군데…” 거짓말인데도 믿고 싶은 거지, 끝까지. 이 노래에서 그런식으로 여자가 계속 이상한 짓은 하는데 비즈 마키는 계속 믿고 넘어가고 또 걸리고 그런 거야. ㅋㅋ 진짜 이 부분이 나오면 그 아픔을 확 느낄 수 있지:

“You! You got what I neeeeeed! But you say he’s just a friend. You say he’s just a friend!”

“너! 널 필요해! 근데 그가 그냥 친구라고? 그는 그냥 친구라고오오오오?”

그 건 메인 포인트이야. 그리고 패션쪽으로 보면은 그 하얀 가발을 쓰면서 모르자트처럼 피아노 치는 모습이…ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 사랑하는 모습이야. 이 비디오 보면 아무리 어른 생활에서 어려움이 있더라도 바로 웃고 힘을 주는 장면이야. 특히 피아노짜리에서 확 일어나고 연정적으로 노래를 부를 때. 함 보세요. ㅋ

Back in the days when rap wasn’t considered “real music” and still wasn’t allowed to be played on MTV, Biz Markie was already the MAN to those of us in high school and trying to catch the new videos on BET’s “Rap City” with that atrocious host whose name I can’t remember. But the videos were good, and Biz Markie’s song is one I remember channeling the hormone-charged emotions of my generation.

“Oh baby, yoooooou!” is a chant that everyone my age and 10 years in either direction knows as a part of their emotional DNA, and brings forth true, blue emotion from back when we were younger, fresher, and much less jaded than we are now.

And who remembered Biz Markie as so fashionable? Looking at the video now, it’s apparent that he or someone had a strong sense of style – the Mozart getup, white wig, and piano to highlight that simplistic but addictive piano hook in the song was sheer genius.

And Biz’s sage advice is as wise now as it seemed then: “Don’t ever talk to a girl who says she just ‘has a friend.’” Or many “friends.” Hehe.
