Here, two office workers agreed to pose for us during their lunch break in Myeongdong. Here, we have an example of non-uniformed employees, ranging from casual to the self-consciously fashionable. Thanks to both of you for taking the time out to pose for this quick snap!

한 눈에 띄는 원색 블루 티, 컬리 뱅에 바가지 머리, 부엉이 안경, 그리고 스키니진까지!

이 클래식 스타일이 다시 돌아오나요? 너무너무 맘에 듭니다! 명동에서도 한 눈에 튈 수 밖에 없는 스타일을 소화할 수 있는 분이 또 있을까요?!

여기서 주목할 것은 대비!

눈이 아플정도로 뚜렷한 원색과 검은색의 대비가 촌스럽기 보다는 현대적으로 세련되 보이네요. 롱티만 원색이고, 다른 모든 아이템은–롱티 안에 입은 홀터탑, 바지, 가방, 플랫 슈즈, 그리고 안경까지–검정색이잖아요. 두 가지 색만 있어서 옷이 싸구려나 촌스러워 보이지 않고 깔끔하고 복고적인 느낌을 주네요ㅋ

또, 삐죽거리지 않고 컬리한 헤어스타일이 얌전하고 구식이어 보일 수 있지만 옷과의 대비 때문에 오히려 더 스타일리쉬 해보이는걸요. 저 머리를 하면 왠지 꼭 땡땡이 무늬 원피스를 입어야 할 것 같은데 이렇게 캐주얼한 큰 티와 스키니 진을 입어도 잘 어울리는군요~

The 80's classic style is coming back to the streets of Myeongdong, one of the fashion centers of Seoul! Who else can represent the style exactly as it should be, in an anachronistic but fabulous way? This is my kind of style!

Let me say that her style is a study in contrast itself!

1) Colors

It's too hard to say that this is an old-fashioned 80's style, because the colors are not motley–not jumbled up with a variety of colors, but just a pair of primary blue and achromatic black. A long, blue T-shirt rimmed with a little bit of neon yellow green color and black halterneck, skinny jeans, flat sneakers, owly glasses and bag–that's a smart match!

2) Hair

Her bob cuts and curled bangs look more chic than out of date when the style is matched with casual, catchy outfits. I had thought that bob cuts best go with a dotted robe and heels, but not here! She is showing how bob cuts can come into fashion again, in this 21st century, casual, street-fashion way.

또 하나 마음에 드는것! 요 해리포터 안경입니다~

일명 부엉이 안경인데, 안경에 줄까지 달려있어서 어떻게 보면 옛날 학교 사감 선생님이 꼭 쓰실 것 같네요ㅋ (아님 김구선생님이 쓰셨을래나?;) 이런 복고풍의 안경, 어울리기 쉽지 않은데 옷의 느낌이랑 아주 잘 맞아요~ 해리포터 안경 쓰면 뭔가 날카로워 보이면서 둥근 안경테 때문에 귀엽고, 벗으면 목걸이 대신으로 쓸 수 있는 유용한 아이템이네요ㅋ (근데 도수는 있는건지요?)

What I love the most is her Harry Potter glasses!

The owly glasses give the conservative impression that they MUST be worn by an old, fussy boarding school headmistress or a white-haired, elderly man. But she looks rather cute with the glasses on as they form a balance with her non-conservative outfits. Whether she puts them on or not, the HP glasses are a smart item to go with!

거의 투명하고 가벼운 색조화장을 해서 화려한 색깔의 옷에 잘 맞네요ㅋ 언니 센스 굿!

And you have to check out her makeup as well. You'd better put on a light or almost non-colored makeup if you are to show off your 80's catchy style.

1998년, "공주병"이 한국을 덮치고..

2007년 "공주 패션"이 서울 거리를 휩쓸다!

사실 공주병이 도진 이후로 매년 공주 치마, 샤랄라 블라우스들이 인기였었지만, 올해부터 왠지 이제는 "공주 패션"은 하나의 트렌드로 잡혀간다는 느낌이 드네요. 왜냐하면, 전에는 발목까지 오는 치렁치렁한 공주치마, 소매를 한껏 부풀린 블라우스들이 좀 튀고 가식적이어 보였어요~ 근데 이제는 오히려 스타일이 다양해져서 길거리에서 봐도 "저건 샤랄라에 좀 못 미치는 정도인데 공주 삘인가?" 할 정도로 자연스럽고 하나의 패션 스타일이 되고 있어요!

일명 "샤랄라 스타일!"

사실, 서울이 언제부터 패션 도시 였나요? 패션도시하면 밀라노, 파리, 런던, 도쿄 정도를 생각할 수 있었죠. 하지만 한국도 한번 패션리더 하겠어요–이 "샤랄라 패션" 때문에!!

한국 여자들은 무지하게 외모에 민감하고 꾸며대요. 이건 과장이 아니라 스무살이 되자마자 화장을 하고 패션에 눈을 뜨게 되요. 아마도 좀 더 넓게 생각하자면 한국은 대학 시험이 무지하게 어려워서 보통은 십대말까지 외모보다 공부에 신경쓰고, 대학 가면 공부보단 외모에 쪼끔 더 신경쓰게 된답니다 ^^;;;

이 젊은 여자들의 폭발적으로 꾸미고 싶은 욕구가 공주 패션에 반영된거 같아요! 사실 한국 남자들은 대체로 치마 입고 여성스러운 여자들 좋아하는 경향이 있어요~ 20대에 들어서 새로 생긴 남친들에게 이쁨 받고 싶은 여자들, 당연히 공주 스타일 옷 한 벌쯤은 갖고 있겠죠?! (사실, 저도 갖고 있어요..ㅋㅋ)

Seoul has not been a major center of fashion for very long, since Korea tends to follow, rather than lead, international fashion trends, and has been known to some pretty peculiar styles. So, there have always been uniquely Korean aspect clothing looks and styles, but only recently have they begun to gel with trends around the world, and in a timely fashion; now, instead of 2-3 years before looks become adopted to Korean tastes, major trends often reach Korea at the same time, or within a season or two.

One look that is truly Korean and truly interesting is the "pretty princess" look, marked by being more conservative hemlines and less revealing cuts, bows and ruffles, as well as flowery and other very feminine patterns. Over the last few years, this look has been expressed in 50's-esque cute dresses or matching outfits, and is becoming a bit more 60's "mod" in recent days.

이 커플에서 주목하실 분은 여자분의 공주스타일!

머리, 옷, 가방, 신발까지 매치하느라 신경 많이 쓰셨네요! 거기다 머리도 아주 공주스타일에 맞춰서 뱅헤어에 차분한 생머리, 하지만 발랄하게 레이어가 많이 들어가 있구요. 또 색깔도 화이트 톤으로 맞추어서 훨씬더 성숙하고 느낌이 차분해요~ 하지만 치마 밑단의 주름과 짧은 길이, 또 밋밋해서 너무 심플해 보일수 있는 앞부분이 살짝 주름 져서 오히려 차분한 비지니스 우먼이 아니라 귀여운 대학생으로 보이게 해주는 센스!

The look is still playful, so it is decidely not a "schoolmarm" look, but most aptly described as young and playful, usually with pastel colors or more aggressive patterns than an East Coast blueblood girl would bring in with a Laura Ashley dress – like most young women's fashion in Korea, the hemline is higher, since the showing of more leg is associated with younger women in their 20's, even though showing the arms and shoulders tends to be considered a bit "fresh" for Korea.

가방이랑 신발은 세트같을 정도로 매치가 잘되는걸요~ (정말 세트 아닌감?;) 슈즈도 완전 플랫도 아니고 하이힐도 아닌 적당한 굽이라서 아주아주 귀여워요. 가방은 조금 지나치게 포말해보일 수도 있지만 전체적으로 잘 어울리네요.

공주 패션..예전엔 쫌 가식적이라고 생각했었는데 이제 저도 막 끌리는데요~트렌드는 무시할 수 없어ㅋㅋ

One codeword for Korean beauty these days is a Western sort of "sexy" that sees itself expressed in terms of hot pants or extreme miniskirts (and ironically, these seem to be worn far more frequently and are on average shorter than in average in the US, even as these styles are associated with America), but in Korea, there is also a dominant influence of "cute" or "princessy" that finds expression in terms of the look being featured here.

You may see something like this in the US as a Laura Ashley summer dress, but Americans would consider wearing such dresses only on more formal occasions, such as a family reunion, wedding, or a party; in Korea, the "pretty princess" look is much more everyday fare, and would be good for a weekend date with the boyfriend or pretty much any event that would require a bit more effort than usual to look pretty in front of others.

In that sense, such wear isn't really considered "formal" or even American "semi-formal", since such definitions lose their meaning a lot in the Korean context because 1) by American standards, Koreans are generally more formal dressers by default, and 2) there are many culturally specific occasions that require "formal" wear – such as a "meeting" or "group blind date" – which American students don't engage in, and require clothing that Americans in a similar position might never wear; therefore, you won't see 21-year-old American co-eds wearing expensive business attire, e.g. a silk blouse with sheer pencil skirt, and stiletto heels – whereas you see this quite often in Korea. It is not at all unusual, in fact, to see

사실 미국인으로써 이 걸 안 좋아했는데 한국에서 살아보니까 가끔씩 괜찮은 걸 눈에 띄는 거예요. 내 생각엔 진짜 커플 티를 좋아하면 비슷한 걸로 사가지고 그냥 맞쳐서 입는 것말고 자극적으로 재밌는 걸 찾아서 자랑스럽게 입는 건 좋지? 명동에서 이 커플을 봤을 때는 지짜 물어보고 싶었죠. 친절하게 해주셔서 - 남자분이 쿨한 자세로, 여자분은 귀여운 미소로 - 진짜 고마웠어요!

When I first came to Korea, I found the idea of "couple t-shirts" absolutely abominable, but when I began to adjust to the Korean fashion scene, and as I looked around more, I would occasionally see some pretty cool and funny ones. The couple we snapped here in Myeongdong was eminently cool about posing for us in their super couple tees – the way I see it, if you're going to do the couple tee thing, don't hold back – go all out!

In Korea, public displays of…attachment are a bit more plentiful and playful than in the US or other places I've been in the West, where people don't buy each other rings on their 100th day of having gone out, nor are there the incessant 14th-of-the-month holidays: Valentine's Day followed by "White Day" followed by "Black Day" followed by even more "Days" related to romance than I have committed to memory. But there's apparently a special day for every month of the year.

And in Korea, "couple rings" (like a wedding band, except you're not married) and "couple t-shirts" are in, although only the more hardcore actually buy matching shirts, and only a few of them go so far as to buy the shirts like the ones in the picture above.

And since fashion t-shirts have gotten really taken off this summer, these more highly-evolved couple tees are no surprise at all.

And to the cynics out there, yeah – it can be a bit corny. Yet, there is something cute about the this public show of affection, especially when it's over the top and unapologetic. And after all – isn't there something inherently romantic about that?

We ran into these two young ladies in Hongdae, the neighborhood that is home to a reknowned art school and a vibrant youth and arts scene, and who looked interesting because of their matching hat, bag, necklace and shoe styles. Their sporty style also reminded me of cheerleaders.

These two are typical of several different trends: the vanity name necklaces popularized by Sex and the City, sports team hats, oversized bags, athletic gear tops, short shorts, and Converses. Casual and tomboyish, while a bit risqué and playful. An interesting look, to say the least.

They told me they were hotel management students on their way home from a training shift at a local restaurant; wow. They looked pretty fresh and fashionable for having completed a long, hard shift on their feet taking orders and running back and forth!

You keep working it, girls!

We ran across this young lady in Daehakno (Hyehwa) who looked ready to jump a train to the East Sea and hit the beach. Of course, she wasn't, but she is typical of younger women these days, who no longer feel sheepish about exposing the shoulders (a huge no-no until very recently), let alone let so much of her back show.

이 언니는 대학로에서 만나게 됐는데 정말 동해에 있는 해수욕장으로 기차를 타려고 한 것같았어요. 물론아니었고 그냥 많은 요즘 젊은 아가씨처럼 어깨를 꼭 가려야하거나 등을 노출하면 안되단 개념에서 벗어난 것같아요.

She was already sporting some pretty short shorts, along with the aviator sunglasses and "worn" Von Dutch hat that is a de rigueur part of the cool-yet-casual style.

아주 짧은 반바지, 그리고 조종사용 써글라스와 Von Dutch의 모자도 쓰고, 진짜 화려한 멋쟁이처럼.

One might have expected, before this summer, to see such revealing styles only in and around Apkujeong, or at least safely below the Han River. Or perhaps in some of the more risqué, lower-middle class "Jersey-ish" areas of the city, such as Dongdaemun or Shillim-dong. Notions about what is OK to expose are definitely changing, and are heading in the direction of showing more, not less.

And in Korea, since the average skirt length has always been a bit high, there's not very much left to reveal anymore.

원래 압구정동, 아니면 강남에서만 이런 화려한 옷을 보일 수 있었는데…아니면 미국의 뉴저지주처럼 노동자 계급 패션이 많이 나타나는 데(동대문이나 신림동)에서만 주로 보인 것같은데. 근데 요즘에는 그런 정한 한계들이 빨리 변하고 있고 어디서나 한국여성패션은 좀 화려하게 되고 있고 자기 표현을 할 수 있게 되는 거예요.

아마 이런식으로 계속 노출하게 되면은 더이상은 노출할 부분이 없을 텐데! ㅋㅋㅋ 하야튼, 언니 - 멋지다! 대게 쿨하게 나오신 것 같아요!
