지하철에서 이 사촌동생과 언니를 우연히 만났는데 딱 찍고 싶었던 니트모자와 동물모자를 쓰고 있었네요. 참 오래된 모자, 니트 유행들이 만난 건데 이번 시즌의 비그 트렌드는 동물 모자예요.

I was in the subway when I met this pair of cousins wearing just the hats I wanted to take pictures of for this season – a knit cap and the ubiquitous animal hat that is so widespread this year. In the first, you have the knit and beret hats coming together around knit caps, which have always been in style, but the animal hats really found a nice for themselves this winter in particular.

물론 이반에만 동물모자가 처음으로 나온 거아닌데 파리바게트의 '곰모자'광고 때문에 많이 인기좋아진 거예요.

Of course, this season the bear hat rose to popularity with Paris Baguette's "free" hat-and-paw set that came with every purchase of a Christmas cake. The commercial was a hit and that hat/paw combo impossible to get. It was like trying to find the Holy Grail.

알았어. 인정할게요. 그 모자는 귀엽기 한데…휴. 그리고 밑에 사진에 그 모자를 실제로 쓰는 모습은 귀여운 거네요.

OK. I admit it. Those hats are kind of cute. And in the picture below, it looks good on her. Fine.

홍대에서 만난 20대 초반. 강북의 힙한 곳에서 자주 볼 수 있는 스타일이죠.지난 겨울부터 등장하기 시작한 펄 스타킹은 이제는 어디서든 머스트 아이템인듯. 퍼 머플러와 스팽글 핸드백으로 포인트를 준 심플하면서도 지극히 여성스러운 엘레강스 스타일.

The woman we bumped into in Hongdae is typical of a lot of women in their 20's you'll find in the hipper areas of northern Seoul: a simple and very feminine outfit, with a feeling of "elegance" added by the fur muffler on the coat, and accented by the shiny stockings that have been really in since last winter, but have become almost de rigueur for women wanting to add a bit of spunk to their look. Her cute black bag is also spark-spangled, another accent to match her tights.

삼청동에서는 진짜 재밌는 가게, 길, 그리고 사람들이 많아요. 쉽게 얘기하면 개성이 많다고 할 수 있는 거예요. 어떤 일요일 오후에 이 흥미로운 자전거를 타고다니는 친절한 아저씨를 만나게 됐어요.

In Samcheong-dong, one can find some of the most interesting shops, streets, as well as people in Seoul. We bumped into this really friendly biker on a Sunday afternoon wandering the streets there.

재밌는 포인트는? 안경과 버튼이지! 역시 이 친구는 대표적인 삼청동 인물이었네요.

And the points I liked the most? Why, the glasses and buttons, of course! He was definitely a man of the Samcheong-dong streets and one cool cat.

이번 시즌에 파리바게트의 해준 곰모자는 인기있었고 사실 동물모자들이 다 인기 있었죠. 근데 파리바게트의 이나영이랑 만든 광고 때문에 커플들이 곰모자를 갖고 싶었던 거죠. 위에 커플은 멋지고 재밌게 그 모자를 쓰는 거죠. 그리고 크리스마스 케익, 또 사탕을 갖고 다니는 거였네요. 진짜 탈콤한 크리스마스 보냈나봐요!

This Christmas season, the must-have item is the bear hat, courtesy of Paris Baguette. And if you are a couple, a matching pair is the way to go. This couple is the quintessential Seoul Christmas couple, since they're not only rocking the hats, but have a Christmas cake in tow, as well as a little bit of candy, a lollipop that looks freshly picked from a Dr. Seuss Christmas tree. All items, it appears, that you can find in the original commercial.

이나영씨는 사실 좀…웬지 나한테 무섭지만 성격/표정은 좀 엽기적이라서 재밌네요. 근데 이나영의 눈빛은 너무 무섭지 않아요? 나…실제로 이나영씨는 그렇게 광고에서 나온 것처럼 나를 놀래게 하면 나도 기절할 건데 곰모자때문에 아닐 거예요. 이나영의 눈빛 때문에. 나 왜 이렇게 겁나지? ㅋㅋㅋ 일단 메리 크리스마스!

Actually, Lee Na-young kind of scares me. It's the eyes, man – the eyes! A lot of Koreans are afraid of cats, right? They say it's the eyes. Well, I'm afraid of Lee Na-young. But she does a great job in this commercial, with her comically flexible face and cutesy poses. Perfect for this kind of commercial. But if Lee Na-young snuck up behind me on Christmas, I'd certainly faint just like they did in the commercial, but it wouldn't be because of the hat; it's the eyes, the eyes!!! Anyway – all kidding aside, Merry Christmas to all!

길거리 초상사진을 찍기는 어쩔 때는 너무 어렵고 가끔씩 생각보다 쉬운 일이예요. 인사동에서 하루종일 촬영하고 있었는데 너무 피곤해서 간식을 먹으러 어디 크라운베커리에 들어갔는데 이 언니가 네 눈에 확 띈 거예요. 근데 사실 너무 피곤하니까 더이상 찍고 싶지 않았고 남한테 또 가서 막 말을 걸고 싶지 않았거든요. 앉았는데 너무 후회할가봐 우리 같이 다녔던 2명한테 그냥 '내가 할께요. 쉬세요'라고 나갔어요. 그녀는 너무 멋진 느낌이 나니까 그냥 피곤해서 안 물어보면 진짜 후회할 것같았어요. 그리고 그 언니는 너무 자신있게 천천히 혼자서 걷고 있었으니까 그리고 왠지 우와한 분위기라서 거절할 것같았어요. 그래도 갔어요. 창피해도 물어보기로 결정한 거예요.

Street portraiture is sometimes incredibly hard, sometimes surprisingly easy. After a long trip through Insadong, we had actually finished and sat down for a snack when I saw the perfect subject: stylish, in mode, and yet distinctively Korean. Black-and-white can often be boring, but she made it interesting. And she had a look that said, "I'm fly and I know it," but I've learned to ask for the picture, even if I feel rejection is certain. And sometimes, I get lucky.

근데 허락해졌네요. 미국에서는 속담이 있는데: "물어보는 게 죄이냐?" 진짜 좋아하는 말이예요. 어렸을 때부터 계속 들었으니까 많은 작은 성공을 이루어진 거예요. 사실 눈에 띈 건 옷만아니라 이 언니의 태도, 자신 있게 걷는 스타일, 그리고 케익박스 2개 들고 다니는 것. 그리고 그 날에 떨어진 노란색 나무입때문에도 꼭 찍고 싶었어요. 아직도 안사동의 그쪽에 사진을 안찍었거든요. 너무 좋은 기회였어요.

What originally caught my eye was not just the clothes, but the cake boxes, her walk, her attitude. And loved the shoes. That section of Myeongdong was also covered in freshly-fallen leaves, so it seemed a perfect place to shoot, especially with this woman who seemed to be waiting for someone to arrive.

조금 얘기해보니까 이 언니는 스타일리스트래요. 그리고 스타일리쉬이고요. ㅋㅋ 물론 유행을 탔는데 - 빤짝빤짝하는 스토킹, 밑에 빨간색 루뷔땡같은 구두, 그런 것들 - 그래도 자기 스타일이 된 느낌이 난 거예요. 사실 자세히 설명하려고 해도 꼭 한 이유때문에 이 룩을 기록하고 싶은 것아니였어요. 근데 그런 경우에서는 그냥 예감을 따라하는 것 좋은 선택인 거예요.

It turns out that she's a stylist, as well as styl-ish. Since I photograph on the street, and am speaking with people I don't at all know, of course I find it difficult to approach some people, especially those who look at first glance like they're surely not going to pose for a picture. The best rule I've ever heard relevant to this situation is, "It can't hurt to ask." Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised.

이 언니는 패션을 따라하는 느낌이 아니고 요새의 여러 유행/트렌드의 요소들로 구성하는 자기 자연스러운 스타일을 만든 거예요. 그녀의 개성, 자신감, 그리고 섹시함을 느낄 수 있었기 때문에 성공적으로 한마디없더라도 그 사람의 분위기를 딱 느껴진 거예요. 그렇게 자기 개성에서 자기 스타일을 만들 수 있다면 그 건 바로 멋있는 '스타일'아닌가?

These shoes are red on the bottoms, but not Louboutin. Domestic brands have picked up the signature red bottoms and one can find them pretty often these days on the more sharply-dressed. What I like about her style is the fact that it's trendy, but not common – there's something about the way she wears it that exudes personality, confidence, and a certain amount of sexiness that adds up to style, baby, style. And that's what fashion's all about.

We caught up with this amazingly dressed trio coming out of a rock concert in Anam-dong, dressed in the most detailed, lovingly crafted punk styles we've seen in a long, long time. This is a whole new level of D-I-Y.

안암동의 락 콘서트 현장에서 나오신 분들 중에, 펑크로 제대로 차려 입으신 세 분들의 사진을 찍었습니다.

There's a lot of pressure to conform in Korea, so it's always refreshing to find people who can go beyond the conventional and find their own truly unique style, and these three have definitely got it! These are no punks-for-show or posers; this is everyday wear for these folks. They're the real deal.

한국에서 튀는 복장을 입는데는 엄청난 심리적 압박을 느끼게 마련입니다. 그러다보니, 대중적인 스타일을 넘어, 자신만의 스타일대로 입고다니는 사람들을 찾는다는 것은 상당히 신선한 경험이라 할 수 있지요. 바로 여기 세 분이 그렇습니다. 이 분들은 공연을 하시는 분들도 아니고, 코스튬 플레이를 하고 계신 것도 아니랍니다.

An important part of the punk aestetic is the do-it-yourself, handmade look. This beautifully hand-painted No Brain shirt really catches the eye (and carries a loving message about the importance of family on the back^^), and the cat-shaped backpack had a suprisingly homey vibe. Customization is key, and the painting, embroidery, and buttons all go towards making this outfit utterly unique.

펑크룩에 있어서 중요한 부분은 자신이 원하는대로 꾸민다는 것입니다. 이분들은 정말 '지대로' 입으셨습니다. 위의 No Brain을 그린 셔츠는 보는 이의 시선을 한 번에 잡아 끌지요. 그리고 뒤에는 가족 사랑의 중요성에 관한 메시지가 적혀있습니다. 뒤에 달린 고양이 가방은 저 분 뒤에 참 편하게 늘어져있는 느낌이었습니다. 자작품과 함께, 티셔츠의 그림, 뱃지 등의 아이템이 어우러져 매우 독특한 느낌이 듭니다.

Punk is the anti-fashion fashion, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's own special appeal. While deliberately bucking trends and going with extreme accessories designed to be transgressive and provocative (like their colored contact lenses and the many, many piercings they sport) they've still managed to be eye-catching.

펑크는 이른바 'anti-fashion'이라 하지만, 외관을 중시하지 않는다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 피어싱이나 커다란 팔찌처럼, 과하다 싶을 정도로 화려한 액세서리를 착용하거나, 기존의 트렌드와는 차별화된 모습으로 사람들의 시선을 집중시킵니다.

KISS-inspired makeup makes for a dramatic look, but that's just what these two were aiming for. Also note the rips and shreds on that t-shirt ~ sexy, cool, and definitely not what the other girls are wearing out. It just makes these two that much more fashionable to be able to reference contemporary Korean women's fashion while subverting it and using items like frilly skirts and fancy patterned stockings in different way.

KISS를 바탕으로 코디를 할 경우는 보통 드라마틱한 느낌을 주게 마련인데, 이 두 분이 의도하신 것이 바로 그것입니다. 찢어진 티셔츠와, 그 위에 그려진 그림을 보면, 웬만한 여자분들이 입으실만한 느낌은 아니죠.

Never mind the Bollocks, here's some Sex Pistols accessories. The Sex Pistols are what first caught these girls ears, but their accessories are what caught our eye. That's some heavy-duty leather, spikes, and chains!

화려한 무늬의 스타킹이나, 장식이 달린 스커트는 일반적인 여성복 패션과 대비됨으로써 두 분의 스타일을 더 돋보이게 합니다. 그리고, Sex Pistols의 이름이 들어간 액세서리도 보이네요. Sex Pistols는 이 아가씨들의 귀를 사로잡았을 것이고, 이 아가씨들의 액세서리는 보는 사람의 눈을 사로잡습니다.두꺼운 가죽에 찡과 체인도 달렸네요.

Tell me those aren't the most fabulous printed stockings you've ever seen! Really, ladies, we ALL need a pair like that. And the stockings work as a nice bridge between some heavy-duty boots and the frilly lace and ribbons of the purple leopard-print skirt. That's mixing it up with style. And it's old OLD school, harkening back the coquettishness of British punk in the 1970's. Altogether well played! Rock on!

가죽부츠와 보라색 표피스커트 사이에 스타킹을 신어주신 게 참 잘 어울리네요. 스타일을 더욱 돋보이게 만들어주는 느낌입니다. 마치 1970년대의 영국 펑크 스타일을 보는 느낌입니다. 앞으로도 멋진 모습 기대하겠습니다.
