  여러분 혹시 “노브라” 트렌드를 따라가려고 가짜 유두를 이용했던 Sex and the City의 Samantha를 기억하나요?

   Yesterday I had quite an experience roaming the streets of Seoul donning the “no bra” look. It was not an intentional move–I simply do not own an adhesive bra, or as my friend would call it, “cutlets“. If you think bare shoulders are taboo in Korea, you should have seen the looks from the ahjuhssis when I went around bra-less.  One ahjuhssi had the nerve to stare my chest blatantly with his mouth agape. As much as I wanted to snap at him, I realized the attention, whether positive or negative, was self-induced, so I shrugged it off.

  어제 노브라를 하고 서울 거리를 나섰다. 그러나 Samantha 처럼 고의적으로 한 것이 아니라 나시를 입고 있었지만 누브라가 없었던 탓이다. 만약 국내에서 민소매를 꺼린다고 생각하면 노브라는 거의 금기시킨다고 해도 될 것 같다. 아예 노골적으로 입을 딱 벌리며 가슴만 뻔뻔스럽게 쳐다본 아저씨도 있었다. 아저씨한테 한 마디하고 싶은 마음은 굴뚝 같았지만 사람들의 시선이 자초한 결과라는 것을 깨닫고 나서는 그냥 그려러니 했다. 

   Still, at the back of my mind, I could not understand why older ahjoomahs could go around bra-less wearing tops made out of paper-thin fabrics, yet a younger woman could not, or should I say, should not. Ahjoomahs are so desexualized in Korea, since they are only viewed as mothers. Which reverberates with my previous post of many Korean ahjoomahs who are infamous for their low-maintenance nature. I believe that they are low-maintenance partially due to the fact that Korean men no longer see them as desirable as women.

   하지만 노브라를 하고 다니는 사람은 나뿐만이 아니다. 노브라를 하고 다니는 아줌마들을 흔히 볼 수 있지만 왜 아가씨가 노브라를 하면 안되는 건가?  어머니로만, 다른 말로 하자면, 더 이상은 여자가 아닌 아줌마들에 대한 편견 때문이 아닐까? 그렇다면 아줌마들이 꾸미지 않는 큰 이유 중 하나는 남자들이 그녀들은 더 이상 여자로, 즉, 성적 매력이 시든 존재로 보기 때문이다.

   All the unwanted lingering glances made me regret with a passion that I stepped out the door without a bra in broad daylight. Now I am going to buy an adhesive bra and only go bra-less at night.  

  하루 종일 낯뜨거운 시선을 받은 나는 대낮에 노브라를 한 내 자신이 원망스러웠다. 이젠 누브라를 꼭 살 것이며 노브라는 밤에만 해야 될 듯 싶다.

2주일전에 이번 봄 시즌의 첫 따뜻한 토요일 밤에 홍대로 갔었는데 사람들이 진짜로 뭘 입고 다니는지 어떤 트렌드 정말로 표현하게 되고 있는지 한번 보러 왔어요. 왜냐하면 요즘에 홍대는 그냥 한가지의 스타일이나 룩이 된 것아니라 정말 서울의 패션 중심이 된 거예요. 다른 동네보다 패션 룩의 범위가 아주 넓으며 유행 옷부터 펑크, 야한 클러브 옷부터 남자친구를 만날 때 얌전한 드레스까지, 미국/일본 그리고 한국스러운 옷도 다 보일 수 있거든요.

Two weeks ago, I took a walk through Hongdae on a Saturday night, and the first real warm night of spring. I just wanted to see what people were really wearing, and looking for anyone who caught my eye. Hongdae has truly become one of the most interesting fashion centers of Seoul, since it has such a variety of styles, encompassing everything from prevalent trends to punk, from the most risque to the most conservative, from American, Japanese, to the most Korean looks.

노란색 코트를 입는 여자를 봤는데 너무 색깔과 디자인 좋아서 잡았어요. ‘Earth tone‘으로(연한 회색에서 검은 갈색에 이르는 난색조) 코디 되게 잘한 거네요. 노란색이랑 초록색과 칼색. 웬지 이 친구의 피부색이랑 어울린 것같았어요. 아 – 그리고 내가 실수해서 어쩔 수없이 포샵에서 조금 컨닝해야 했어요. 그래서 색감이 조금 이상하죠. 미안!

I saw the flash of yellow and soon had my first catch of the day! I liked the yellow, the green, and brown earth tones. The colors also seemed to match her skin tone well. I was having a bit of trouble with the flash, so I cheated a bit with Photoshop to save this picture.

우리 사이트의 믿음대로 ‘패션이 길거리부터 시작된다’고 하는데 맞는 말같죠? 이 재밌는 반스타킹은 웬지 그냥 캐주얼 양말의 느낌이라 더 좋았던 것같아요.

You know that fashion starts from the bottom, and she had great stockings — I liked the way they bunched up and kind of looked more like tube socks than real thigh-highs. It made the look more casual.

왔섭?! …존나 쿨 사나이들을 널이터에서 만났는데 “Seoul City Rockers”이라고 부르고 b-boy 그룹이예요. 너무 쿨한 사이트만 봐도 정말 멋진 녀석들이네요.

I got up the nerve to catch this hot girl passing by the park!

와우. 그 보우타이를 너무 마음에 든다. 그리고 그 교복식 나온 자켓도 (두타아닌가?). 코디를 진짜 창조적으로 한 거네요.

OK. I love the bow tie. I recognize the Dongdaemun Doota-brand “schoolgirl” jacket, which is popular. But coordinating it with the bow tie — nice move.

놀이터에서 평범한 3가지 스타일인데 뭔가 평범하지 않은 것같았어요. 왼쪽에서 얌전함, 캐주얼함, 화려함이 — 다 한 사진에서 나오네요. 그리고 가운데 친구의 ‘모나리사 미소’도 좋았어요.

These three girls in the park are pretty everyday styles, but I like how the three friends cover demure, casual, and sporty styles all in one shot. Also, the girl in the middle’s “Mona Lisa smile” added a nice touch to the picture.

오예. 이번 시즌은 컬러플이죠. 밤에 썬글래스? 오예!

This song is the shit, right? The 80’s are truly back, and they were never cooler.

한국에서는 “고트”이란 패션을 많이 못 봤는데 진짜 잘했더라고요. 그리고 뭐 생각이 드냐면 일본의 언더그라운드 패션 문화는 아주 자극적인데 한국에서는 아무래도 일반 길거리에서 입을 수 있는 것같아요. 물론 낮에 어디 사무실에서 입는 스타일아니지만 밤에 홍대에서 보면은 웬지 딱 어울리는 느낌? 진짜 멋졌어요.

The “Goth light” crew. You don’t see much Goth or other underground cultures much in Korea, and when you do, they’re not nearly as extreme as in Japan. Although you probably couldn’t wear this look to the office, it somehow seems pretty normal when it comes to one night in Hongdae.

근데 홍대에서 나가면서 찍기 어려운 한국의 대표적인 여성스러운 스타일. 많은 이렇게 귀엽고 여성스러움의 포인트로 나온 친구들이 활영허락을 잘 안해주거든요. 이 친구들한테 친절한 협조를 해주니까 진짜 고마웠네요!

As I left Hongdae, I bumped into two young ladies sporting the demure, more feminine styles that are so hard to get people to pose in. Understandably, the girls rocking this kind of style tend to be a bit more conservative, and generally turn down requests for a picture.

이 사진으로 마칠게요. 막지막 완전히 다른 스타일이고 — 섹시한 스타일부터, 고트으로, 얌전한 룩까지 — 진짜 홍대에서는 다양한 패션이 있네요. 그리고 홍대에서는 다양한 사람들이 있을수록 친절한 사람들도 많아요. 마지막 사진으로 이런 친절한 미소로 끝나면 기분이 좋죠?

We were really happy to get these two young ladies on camera, and it they were a a good way to end this trip through Hongdae. And it’s always good to end with such a nice smile, no?

아시다시파, 한국에서는 첫눈은 아주 중요한 거죠. 왜냐하면 한국/일본에서는 첫눈은 로맨틱한 분위기이니까요. 여자/남자친구랑 같이 있으면 어쩌면 키스를 할도 수있는데 떨어져 있으면 적어도 문자메세지나 헌화 한 통이나 해야 죠. 오늘 겨울의 첫눈이 왔는데 이대에서 너무 기쁜 사람들이 많았어요. 밖에 길거리에서는 어떤 여학생들 4명이 막 뛰면서 웃고 큰 소리를 치고 있었네요. 겨울이 공식적으로 온 거였네요.

In Korea, the first snow of the year is a romantic event. If you’re a couple and you happen to be meeting together at just that moment, it’s the sort of thing that might require a kiss, or if apart, at least a phone call or text message. On tonight’s first snowfall here in Seoul, while in the Ewha Women’s University neighborhood, we spied a group of four young ladies jumping up and down in joy, screaming and giggling at the top of their lungs. It was official – winter had come.

이 커플이 가게에서 나오자마자 눈 때문에 깜짝 놀랜 모습을 봤네요. 좋은 기념이 될 수 있으니까 초상사진을 찍어도 되는지 물어봤죠.

We caught this couple at the moment they spied the snow, and we asked them to pose for our cameras and share the moment with us.

진짜 생각보다 우산이 없는 사람들이 많았더라고요. 근데 어떤 사람들이 창조적으로 문제를 해결한 거죠.

It seemed that a lot of people were caught without umbrellas this evening, so there were some creative solutions to the problem.

진짜 잘 생각했고 만들었네요, 언니들아! 기능적으로만 쓸모 있는 아이템뿌만 아니라 너무 멋진 스노우 스타일을 만들었네요!

I didn’t even know! The Japanese guy from the Halloween party was doing a character called “Hard Gay”, who appears on Japanese TV in funny situations and even helps save people. You can see him in an example below, where he helps save a ramen shop.

진짜 몰랐어! 저 할로윈 파티에 나왔던 웃기는 일본남자가 그냥 웃기게 한 거아니라 정말 일본 텔리비전에서 나오는 인물이네요: ‘하드게이.’ 그리고 그냥 웃기게 나오는 인물만 아니라 일반 사람을 도우주고 하는 방법도 웃기는 거예요. 예를들어 밑에는 ‘하드게이’가 라면가게 주인을 도와주는 모습을 보세요.

For some reason, I didn’t get the feeling they were making fun of gays at all, as much as making a “fish out of water” joke, in which you take a stock character from the gay nightclub scene and make him an everyday superhero who does extremely helpful things like save people’s businesses. To me, that’s brilliant. And it reflects one of the few times you can see a character like this being viewed in a positive (although comedic) light. When will “Hard Gay” come to Korea? Oh, wait! He already has! On Halloween! (Many thanks to our reader for this tip!)

The Shinchon Changcheon Children’s Park, known to most people simply as Shinchon Park, is an oasis of youthful energy, sexuality, and even rebellion. It is also just known as a place to rest while waiting for a friend in the busy Shinchon area, but it is also known to be a place where young middle and high school-aged kids gather in dark corners to drink, and where couples find an open hideout.

신촌 어린이 공원(주로 신촌 공원이라고 알려져있지요)은 젊은 에너지와 섹슈얼리티 심지어 반항끼마저도 느낄 수 있는 오아시스예요. 이곳은 복잡하고 바쁜 신촌에서 만남의 장소로도 알려져 있지만, 한편으로는 중고생들이 어두운 구석에서 술을 마시기도 하고 커플들이 몸을 숨길수 있는 장소를 찾는 곳이기도 하지요.

In short, it’s a park with all kinds of people, and that space defines a zone of relative freedom. You can see many young women in groups smoking there as well, along with couples making out, or people kicking back with beers bought from a nearby convenience store. For some reason, this is the one place where ajussis – older Korean men – won’t be able to scold kids for being “punks”, women for smoking in public (traditionally, women in Korea were not supposed to smoke outside or in public places), or tell young couples to lay off one another. Here, the ajussis in their business suits and conservative ties are the outsiders.

간단히 말하자면, 이 공원에는 온갖 종류의 사람들이 다 모이는 곳이고, 어느 정도 자유로운 곳이라고 정의할 수 있는 공간이예요. 젊은 아가씨들이 그룹으로 모여서 담배 피는 것도 볼 수 있고, 연인들이 키스를 하거나, 주변 편의점에서 사온 맥주를 마시면서 휴식을 취하는 사람들도 쉽게 볼 수 있어요. 이곳에서만은 아저씨들도 어린 학생들이 날나리 짓이라고 한다고 혹은 공공장소에서 여자들이 담배 피우는 것이나 어린 커플들이 다정하게 있다고 해서 잔소리하지 않아요. (한국에서는 오랫동안 여자들이 공공장소나 밖에서 담배피우는 것이 거의 금기에 가까웠어요) 오히려 양복입고 넥타이 맨 아저씨들은 이곳에서 아웃사이더라고 할 수 있어요.

Typical of the people enjoying the park, especially late on a weeknight, are groups of young women chatting, perhaps smoking, perhaps even sharing a can or three of beer. As an American, this is one of the things I like most about this part, since back home “open bottle laws” can get you fined or even arrested for having an open bottle of alcohol in a public place, especially a park. Still think America is “liberal”? Being able to relax with a can of cold beer in a park right out in the open is truly a luxury for me.

대개 이 공원을 자주 찾은 사람들, 특히 평일 늦게 자주 오는 사람 중에는 젊은 아가씨들이 얘기하는 걸 많이 볼 수가 있는데 가끔은 담배를 피우거나 또 가끔은 맥주 서너캔을 나눠마시기도 해요. 미국 사람로서 가장 마음에 드는 것은 미국에서 “open bottle laws”가 생긴 이후, 공공장소 특히 공원에서 술을 마실 경우에는 벌금을 내거나 체포될 수도 있어요. 아직도 미국이 ‘자유롭게’ 느껴지나요? 공원에서 차가운 맥주를 마시면서 여유를 느낄 수 있다는 게 제게는 정말 특별하게 느껴지는군요.

And for the young, single women whom you can see here – often as young as high school – being young, dressing how you want, all while talking freely and loudly, and perhaps even smoking and drinking – is a luxury in Korean society as well, since there are so many little rules of behavior for women here.

이 공원에서는 고등학생들로 보이는 아가씨들도 흔하게 볼 수 있는데 사실 젊다는 것은 입고 싶은대로 옷 입고, 마음껏 자유롭게 큰 소리로 떠들고 여기에 아마도 술마시고 담배피는 것까지… 여자들에게 지켜야 할 규칙이 너무 많은 한국 사회에서 여기는 여자들 특히 어린 학생들이나 아가씨들에게도 특별한 곳입니다.

This kind of social freedom is true for couples as well, which is the other most common type of person found in Shinchon Park, and you can see many couples simply relaxing and taking a moment to be enjoy each other without worrying about being embarrassed, or too many people watching them.

사회적은 자유로움을 느낄 수 있는 사람들중에는 커플들도 포함됩니다. 커플들은 신촌 공원에서 가장 흔하게 볼 수 있는 타입입니다. 많은 커플들이 이곳에서 쉬기도 하고, 다른 사람들의 시선을 피해 자연스럽게 스킵쉽을 즐기기도 합니다.

And one thing that felt really special about Shinchon Park was just how open people seemed to be to letting the camera and our crew in on their most natural moments. For this, we’d like to say thanks to all of our impromptu models!
