서울에도 뉴욕이나 파리, 도쿄와 같은 패션 위크가 있다는 걸 알고 있었나요? 모르고 있었어도 괜찮아요. 예전에 몇번 행사를 한 적이 있었지만 이번에야말로 성대하게 치루어진 첫번째 서울 패션 위크라고 할 수 있으니까요. 모두 한국 디자이너들의 작품들로 이루어진 이번 행사에는 긍정적인 열기로 가득했고, 해외에서 온 디자이너와 바이어들이 많은 관심을 보였어요.

Did you even know Seoul had a Fashion Week, just like New York, Paris, or Tokyo? Well, don't worry if you didn't – this is really the first year it's taken off big, even though some shows have been done in the past. But it was all Korean designers, all positive energy, and attracted many international designers and buyers.

우리 런웨이 옆에 앉았고 유명한 디자이너랑 수다를 나누었고, 그리고 다음 시슨의 뉴패션을 보고 찍을 수 있었죠…

We sat next to the runway, bumped shoulders with famous designers, got to shoot the fresh fashions for next spring and summer…

근데 우리 주로 많이 하는 건 스트리트 패션이죠. 그리고 지금까지 우리말고 다른 스트리트 패션중심으로 보는 잡지가 존재하지 않아요. 우리 스타일은 런웨이에 있는 모델보다는 길거리에서 만날 수 있는 '모델'한테 관심이 훨씬 더 많죠. 그리고 패션쇼이니까 참석한 사람들 중에 모델링 전공하는 학생들이 아주 많았고 그리고 바른 모델들이 많이 있었어요. 그래서 멋진 포즈를 자아알 잡아준 거죠.

But remember – our primary thing is street fashion. And so far, we are the only people in Korea doing it on a regular basis. So, we were shooting not just the models on the runway, but of the fashionable attendees as well. Many of them were actually modeling students or models themselves, so they already knew how to strike a pose.

We just came back from Seoul Fashion Week, and we have a lot to report, and are busy editing pictures, translating videos, and generally just processing all the things that happened to us. It was, in a nutshell – amazing!

우리 방금 서울 패션 위크에서 돌아왔어요. 웹사이트에 올릴 이야기도 너무 많고, 사진들을 편집하고 동영상을 번역하는데 정신이 없네요. 너무 많은 패션정보들이 막 쏟아지고 있어요. 한마디로 말하자면, 정말 굉장해요!

물론 우리 사이트는 패션산업계의 하이 패션보다 거리에서의 패션을 더 많이 다루기 때문에, 서울 패션 위크 행사장에 만난 사람들의 스타일과 트렌드를 꼼꼼히 담아서 왔답니다. 하긴 패션쇼만큼 거리의 패션을 잘 다룰 수 있는 곳이 어디있겠어요? 재미있는 것은 아마도 우리팀만이 런어웨이의 모델들이 아닌 행사장에 참가한 사람들의 옷차림에 더 관심을 가지고 취재한 사람들이라는 점이지요.

And of course, since we're more a street fashion site than high fashion, we were there recording all the styles and trends that were expressed through the everyday people we met there. Indeed, what better place for street fashion than a fashion show? I believe we were the only people there to track the fashion of the attendees, as opposed to the runway models.

우리가 새로운 잡지라서 조금더 신기하게 연예인을 보는 것같고 그래도 신가하게 보면 어때? ㅋ

그래서 우리 온라인 잡지의 '실시퀸'이란 컬럼니스트가 앙드레이김을 만났을 때는 진짜 신났죠. 우연히 만났는데 나무 친절하게 사진을 같이 찍혀주신 거예요. 앙드레이 - 진짜 1935년생이신가요? 아닌 것같은데…베리베리 영계같네요.

We're a young magazine, so we're a bit more vulnerable to the cult of celebrity than older, more venerable cousins. But that means we are having more fun, right?

That being said, we'd like to give a "Heeeeeyyy!" to the super fashion masta Andre Kim, whom new columnist SalsaQueen bumped into at a recent hobnobbing event, and was wearing his signature white suit. Would you even guess that he's a 72-year-old man? Looking phenomenally fresh!

For those of you who don't know much about Andre's early days, definitely check him out in some of his early shows (hat tip to the Hunjangui Karuchim blog for the video links). You can also learn a bit more about him from that same blog's conversation about him here.

한국의 한 패션 디자이너에 대한 뉴욕타임즈의 한 기사도 한 번 읽어볼만 합니다. 그가 여는 쇼와 행사들은 말할 것도 없고, 그가 수십년 동안 한국 사회에 미친 영향 때문에 누구도 부인할 수 없는 한국의 가장 영향력 있는 패션 디자이너에 대한 기사입니다. 진정한 한국의 창조자.

Also worth checking out is The New York Times' very recent article on this one-of-a-kind man, still Korea's most influential fashion designer, hands down, just because of the impact he's had on Korean society decades ago, not to mention the shows and events he puts on now. Truly, a Korean original.

그리고 살사퀸은 뉴페이스이니까 제대로 인사시켜야 하는데 나중에 할 거고 지금은 간단하게 말하면 그녀는 대게 쿻한 사람이고 남성패션에 대해서 관심이 많대요. 그래서 그쪽에 우리 사이트에서 파이오니어이죠.

And since SalsaQueen is a new face, she also should get a proper introduction, which will come in a later post. But for now, just know that she's a cool character here on the site who is very interested in male fashion in Korea and will be forging a path towards developing content in that direction. Two trailblazers in one post! Yay!

미스코코랑 멋진 ��티� 갔었는� 버스�� 걸� �주�고 했어요. �주는 아는 사람들� 많고 요� 조달업� 하려고하니까 종로3가쪽� 있는 와�빠를 필려가지고 파티를 했어요. 맛있는 와�, ��� 너무 많아서 좋았어요. � �주한테 만든 ��� 보고 싶다면 그녀� 볼르그� 들어가시죠.

Both MissKoco and I had a chance to attend a birthday party thrown by an up-and-coming woman named Unju, who is working hard on becoming one of the most capable food caterers in Seoul (visit her food blog here).

그 카페는 - Cafe Scene��고 - 낙�시장 바로 옆� 있었어요. 그래서 깜� 노랬어요. 보통 '멋진 와�빠"를 ��하면 � 삼청��나 청담� ��난� 거잖아요. 아마 낙�시장근처는 많� 변하고 있나�요. 밑�는 초대장과 약��예요.

It was held in ritzy Cafe Scene, which itself is in a most unexpected place: right next to the Nagwon Market in Jongno 3-ga. Here's the map from the invitation:

More than that, there were some fun and fashionable people in attendance, who had the gift of being able to give some good old-fashioned gab. Lots of interesting folks there.

우리 사이트의 미스코코는 드디어 패션 파티, 행사에 초대박게 되는 거네요. 이번에 디자이너 지해가 파리에서 한국에 온 거예요. 미스코코는 그 파티에 갔는데:

파리에서 활동 중인 패션 디자이너 김지해 씨가 국내에 첫 매장을 열고 자신의 옷을 선보인다.

오트쿠튀르(고급 맞춤복) 전문 디자이너인 김 씨는 2001년 한국인 최초로 프랑스 파리의 정상급 디자이너들의 모임인 오트쿠튀르 협회의 초청 멤버로 입성한 디자이너.

요새는 너무 재밌는 사건과 파티초대 받는데 열심히 그 멋진 사람들의 패션을 주의하고 있고 좋은 사람들을 만나면서 좋은 인맥을 만드도록 애를쓰는 거죠. 예를 들어서 그 삼청동에 지해의 귀국파티에서 모델, 전프랑대사, 외교관, 감독, 연예인도 다 참석했는데 샴페인이 물처럼 계속 나오고 있었고 사진기와 플래쉬들이 찍찍찍 게속 그 소리 났었어요. 그리고…옷은…옷!

A report from MissKoco, who has been attending some events that she's been invited to lately, and which she's covering for this site. We're going to be getting out there much more in terms of events in Seoul related to fashion, stars, and other events, so stick with us as we continue to make a name for ourselves.

On Monday, I went with a fabulous friend to a fashion event to celebrate Ji Haye and welcome her design house to Seoul from Paris. The party was at her studio in Samcheongdong, one of my absolute favorite areas in Korea for its chic contemporary sensibility mixed with traditional architecture and landmarks. The people in attendance included models, diplomats, well-known actresses, filmmakers, and the like. The champagne was flowing, the people were fascinating, there were cameras at every turn, and the clothes…. OH! THE CLOTHES!

지해씨는 너무 아름다운 옷을 만들셨네요. 그녀의 포커스는 고급패션 위딩드레스 그리고 남성의류이예요. 미스코코는 그 디자이너의 가방과 재킷하고 사랑에 빠진 거래요. (짝사랑인것 같은데…ㅋㅋㅋ)

Ji Haye designed some beautiful garments. Her focus in Seoul is on high fashion wedding dresses and men's wear. I fell in love with one of the bags she had and a couple of her jackets. I left quite inspired, and very much in awe.

지난 목요일날은 미스코코는 성낙희의 아트 전시회 오페닝을 하는 One and J. Gallery에 갔어요. 우연히 지해의 파티에 만나셨던 분을 갤러리에서 본 거고 (그래서 반가웠지!) 그리고 여러 새로운 얼굴을 보게 됐었죠. 분위기는 너무 친절하고 편하니까 진짜 즐거운 시간이었다고 했어요.

On Thursday, I went to an art opening for Nakhee Sung at the One and J. Gallery. Upon walking up to the gallery I immediately saw someone I met at the Ji Haye party earlier in the week and a couple of people that I've met before, but haven't seen in some time. It felt really comforting and made the whole event that much more fabulous.

갤러리자체는 아주 멋있었어오. 2층 있는데 모든 층은 몇가지 방이 있어요. 그 날은 DJ가 다양한 음악을 해주고 있었는데 그 공간하고 딱 어울렸어요. 성씨의 추상파의 그림들이 진짜 회로기판같으며 낙서한테도 영향을 미친 것같았어요. 성씨의 작품들이 세계에 유명하니까 2006년도에 베니스의 비엔날레와 싱아포어비엔날레에서도 주의 받고 있었어요. 그래서 이런 세계에 유명한 아티스트를 볼 수 있는 기회라서 아주 좋았어요.

The gallery space itself is quite nice with a patio, two floors, and a couple of rooms on each floor. The electro-alternative/indie pop dj playing was the sister of the artist and the music complimented the visual art well. Sung's abstract paintings looked a lot like circuit boards and a bit influenced by graffiti. Her work has been shown all over the world, including at the Venice Biennale and the Singapore Biennale in 2006, so it was a treat to see a Seoul local who is internationally appreciated.

근데 미술만 아니라 아름다운 사람들도 있었네요. 특히 밑에 사진에 나오는 자매들이 있었기 때문에 좋았어요. 진짜 들어오자마자 그 웬쪽언니의 이쁜 LV가방과 오른쪽의 긴 미소니 스웨터는 너무 누에 띈 거예요. 미소니는 보통 너무 혼스럽게하는 패턴과 색깔들이 너무 많은데 이 건 아주 달랐네요. 그러니까 그 옷을 많이 좋아하게 된 거예요. 그리고 그 옥 목거리와 포인트 구두도 맘에 든 거예요.

To compliment the art there were some beautiful people in attendance, including a couple of sisters who allowed us to take pictures of them for FMS.

As soon as these two women walked in FMS noticed the LV purse and I noticed her sister's long sparkly sweater, which she said she got from Missoni. Looking at Missoni pieces usually make me dizzy with all the colors and swirly patterns, but this one was different and I liked what she was wearing a lot. I loved her big stone necklace and her little pointy shoes, too.

갤러리의 주인들이 아주 마음이 따뜻하고 매력적인 거고 인상이 너무 좋았어요. 보통 이런 갤러리 주인들은 거만하고 성격이 이상한 사람들이잖아요. 이 갤러리의 주인들이 너무 편하고 친절하신 분들이였어요. 많은 이런 고급 갤러리에서 그런 사람들을 찾기 힘들 거예요.

The owners of the galley are fantastic, charming, and fun guys who come off as articulate art professionals and not snobby and unapproachable wierdos as many often do. All in all, my favorite kind of people and exactly the kind of creative environment I love.

생각보다 서울이란 도시의 너무 흥미스러운 면을 보이게 되고 있네요. 재밌는 행사, 흥미스러운 사람들, 감상할 만한 미술, 그리고 맛있는 음식 - 요즘에 갑자기 이런 문화에 막 빠진 것같아요. 이렇게 계속 되면은 더이상 뉴욕을 그리워할 필요 없겠다!

Seoul is starting to show me a side I never knew it had before, one filled with great events, people, art, and food. And I'm staring to fall for this new Seoul. New York is going to get very jealous if Seoul keeps this up.
