Ha Sang Beg's F/W 2008 show was frickin' cool, of course, but the opening to the show was absolutely badass! So one could say the show was "mechanical," but that would wouldn't be a negative review in this case! What a badass way to kick off a show!

Opaque tights are the thing to have in general this season, and it looks like black — safe and easy to coordinate — is the new black. Well, I don't think much has changed, but I definitely think that someone out there is telling Korean women to wear white or light pumps with black or dark tights.

지금 계절엔 다들 두꺼운 타이즈를 신죠. 이 타이즈들은 코디하기 쉽고 안전하지만 기존의 검정과 다른 새로운 검정같군요. 음.. 어딘가에 있는 누군가가 한국 여자들에게 "하얗거나 밝은 펌프스를 입고 검정이나 색이 어두운 타이즈를 신으세요!" 라고 말하고 있는 거 같아요.

The white bow definitely tips her in the direction of "cute" and makes for a much younger look. Note this picture as this article continues, especially in terms of the short lengths and ruffles. The more demure jacket helps keep this in the realm of cute, along with the black, opaque tights.

There's also a major thing with ruffles going on these days, as you can see in the picture above, with not just one, but two more girls in line with ruffle or sequined skirts and matched jackets.

정말 러플이 요즘 대세인 거 같아요. 사진에서 줄 서있는 여자들을 보세요. 한 두 명이 아니라 여러 명이 자켓과 매치해 러플이나 시퀀이 달린 치마를 입고 있잖아요~.

The recent return to the 1920's and the whole "flapper" look, with 40's oxford booties galore, is responsible for all this, it seems.

최근 20년대로의 회귀현상과 40년대 스타일의 옥스퍼드 부츠와 플레퍼룩, 이들과 관련이 있어 보이는 군요.

She's doing an interesting mixture of sequin bolero top and ruffle "minidress" worn over a casual pair of skinny jeans and t-shirt. That was a new one for me, and I liked what she was trying to do.

If there was any doubt that this is flapper-inspired, the loose bead necklace and heavy pearls on the wrist lay that all to rest.

이게 플래퍼의 영향을 받은건지 의심이 조금이라도 든다면 느슨한 비즈 목걸이와 손목의 무거운 진주 팔찌를 보고 확실히 flapper의 시대에서 내려왔다는 걸 확인할 수 있죠.

I wonder what she would look like with shorter hair? I think the look would be stronger if her hair were much shorter, since it's sort of between a real bob cut and longer hair. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd say go short, sister! That would totally lock in the look, and make clearer what you're doing. I love the idea and think you should go all the way!

Overall, I'm seeing some stark, two-tone contrasts being a theme here, either expressed as a splash of color against a plain black or white palette, or black-and-white as the point of contrast itself.

전체적으로 하얗고 두 가지 색상이 대조되는 게 테마군요. 까맣고 하얀 팔레트에 색깔을 흩뿌려놓은 거 같기도 하고 블랙 앤 화이트가 대조의 포인트 인 거 같기도 해요.

With a mix of 1920's "flap," 1940's footwear, and 1960's "mod", the look is as sharp as the contrasting, two-tone color schemes.

우리 FMS하면 길거리 패션이에요, 뭐가 hot한지 말이에요. 그렇다고 우리가 서울 패션 위크를 빠져먹을 순 없죠, 안 그래요? 우리는 런웨이 쇼들에 가서 패션의 원산지를 봐요. 하지만 우리는 주로 어떻게 런웨이의 하이 패션이 길거리 패션으로 해석되는지에 더 관심이 있죠.

We here at FMS are about the fashion of the street, what's hot right now. But we can't miss Seoul Fashion Week, right? We go to the runway shows and keep up with fashion at its source — the runways of high fashion — but we are mostly concerned with how this will eventually translate into the styles of the street.

우리가 패션 위크에 참석할 때, FMS는 런웨이 쇼만 보는 것이 아니에요. 우리는 패션 리더들을 보고 무엇을 입고 있는지 봐요. 뭐가 길거리에서 인기인지 벤치마킹 하는 데에 패션 쇼 만큼 좋은 장소가 어딨나요? 그래서 우리는 관중들 중에 튀는 패션과 스타일을 가진 분들의 사진을 찍기 시작했죠.

When we attend fashion week, FMS looks at more than just the runway shows — we look at the fashion leaders and what they're wearing. What better place than a fashion show to benchmark what's hot on the street as well? So, we started taking pictures of members of the crowd whose fashion and style caught our eye.

이 아가씨는 귀여운 스타일을 멋스럽게 뽐내고 있었죠. 너무 과도하지 않지도 않았고, 정말로 귀여워 보이는걸요?

This young lady was rocking the cutesy style in just the right way — it wasn't annoyingly saccharine, and actually worked.

분홍 물방울 무늬 신발을 소화할 수 있는 것은 그녀 뿐이 아닐까 싶네요. 아! 그리고 분홍색 얘기가 나온 김에…

Only she could pull off pink shoes with pink polka-dot bows. Whoa! And speaking of pink…

우리는 이 분홍색과 흰색 패턴의 대담한 옷을 발견했죠. 이 끝내주는 신발들과 함께요!

We spotted this fierce outfit — just pink and white and patterns — with some shoes that wouldn't quit.

그녀는 디자이너가 아니라고 말했어요, 그렇게 비싸지 않았단 말이죠. 여기서 같은 신발이 한 켤레 더 보이기도 했어요. 하지만 우리는 누가 훨씬 더 잘 소화했는지 알죠! 비교할 필요도 없다구요.

She said they weren't designer, meaning they weren't expensive, and we did spot another pair of them in the line. But we know who really rocked them better! No need to even compare.

어떤 아가씨가 알록달록한 스크린 앞에서 포즈를 취하는 게 눈에 뛰었어요. 그래서 우리는 그녀의 작은 카메라로 나오는 것보다 더 좋은 사진을 찍어주기로 했죠. 우리는 그녀가 유행하는 트렌드들을 가지고 - 화려한 프린트 미니드레스, 밝은색의 스타킹, 부츠, 미래풍 메탈릭 재킷 – 그리고 모두 같이 어울러지게 대담하게 입고 있었죠. 한국 거리에서는 조금 특이한 색과 재료를 가지고 말이에요. 보면 볼수록 그녀의 펑키적 매력에 끌리는걸요!

We spotted this young lady posing in front of a colorful façade, where we decided to give her a better picture than the one she was taking with her small camera. We liked how she had taken some prevailing trends — the colorful print minidresses, bright stockings, booties, and "futurist" metallic jacket — and was working them together in a very brave way, with colors and materials that were a bit unusual for the Korean street. The more one looks, the more one likes and respects her funkiness.

색도 사랑스럽고, 백도 사랑스럽고, 포즈마저도 사랑스럽네요! 이 모두 포즈는 그녀가 즉석에서 직접 해낸 거에요. 그리고 두 트렌드의 조화 – 크게 유행을 탄 부츠와, 좀 덜 유행을 탄 (그리고 대개 실패하는) 모카신 – 둘은 정말 잘 어울렸어요. 펑키하면서도 자연스러운 색상으로…

Love the colors, love the bag, and love the pose! That was all done on her own, with no prompting. And the convergence of two trends — the major ones of the booties, the minor (and usually horribly-done) one of moccasins — really came together well. Funky earth tones.

그리고 또 비슷한 자연스러운 색상과 튀는 색상 테마의 믹스! 우리는 쇼가 마친 후 이 아가씨를 보았어요. 두말 할 것없이 멋져요! 그리고 뒤에 멋진 스포트 라이트가 보너스를 더 해줬죠. 이 후에 우리는 밖으로 나가서 정말 캐쥬얼하면서도 색깔있는 사람들을 만났어요.

Along a similar earth-tone/splash-of-color theme, we caught this young lady after a show. Naturally fabulous! And the "kicker" spotlight in the back was an added bonus. Afterwards, we wandered outside, where we bumped into a few more people being very, very casual-yet-colorful this season.

근데 우리가 할말은, 짧은 뱅헤어와 흐르는 머리 스타일이 정말 아름다워요. 뒤에 또 그 스포트 라이트네요. 이 "Goldilocks"천사같죠?

But we must say, the short bangs and flowing locks look is hot. There's that kicker spotlight again. Isn't "Goldilocks" angelic?

말이 필요 있나요? 하얀 디테일이 들어간 스웨터, 보라색 토트백, 초록색 칼라까지 다 너무 좋아요! 그리고 등산화와 함께? 어우정말~

Need we even say it? Love the sweater with the white detailing, lavendar tote, and green collar pop! And with hiking boots? Dang, dude!

그리고 그는 요즘 유행하는 둥근 바가지 커트를 하고 있죠. 요새는 앞머리를 이런 식으로 많이 짜르죠, 끝을 부드럽게 해서요. 남자 어린이들에게 가장 흔하긴 하지만, 전반적으로 모던한 느낌을 주는데 더하네요. 우리는 돌아다니면서 핑크앤드화이트를 다시 보고 그녀의 블랙 코트가 그녀의 매력을 가렸다는 걸 느꼈죠. 코트가 없이는 그녀는 정말 환상적이었어요, 사진을 찍어야했죠.

And he's also sporting the round bowl cut — also known as the "bagaji" or "gourd bowl cut" in Korean — that is very, very popular these days. In fact, most bangs now are cut this way, with feathered edges. Especially in its purest form on many boys, it helps to add a an overall "mod" look. While wandering around, we spied Pink-and-White again, and realized that her black coat had actually hidden her true fabulousness; we hadn't seen her without the coat, in her full glory. We had to get a shot.

어머나! 눈이부시네요! 그녀가 포즈를 취하기 부끄러워하는게 의아했어요. 왜냐면 모든 이목이 그녀와 그녀의 아름다운 옷에 집중되어 있었거든요. 그리고…

Whoo, girl! You're blinding me with sheer fabulosity! It was funny that she was so embarrassed to pose, since all eyes were definitely on her in that glorious outfit. And what's more…

누가 그 핑크앤드화이트가 이 쇼의 모델 중에 한명의 여자친구인걸 알았겠어요? 그리고 아까 Goldilocks의 친구라는것도! 남자 모델이 돌아다니자 조금 소란스러워졌어요.

Who knew that Pink-and-White was the girlfriend of one of the models in the show? And that she was Goldilocks' friend? And the male model in question did cause some pandemonium once word got out that he was wandering around.

이것이 제가 제일 좋아하는 사진이에요. 핸드폰에 비쳐지는 여자 얼굴이 보이나요? 정말 러키한 샷이네요.

This is my favorite. Notice the girl's face caught as the reflection in her cellphone. Lucky, lucky shot.

우리는 주차장에서 홍석천도 만났어요. 그는 쿨하게 쉬고 있었죠.

We also bumped into Hong Seok-cheon in the parking lot, who was taking a short break from being absolutely cool.

그도 우리처럼 과자를 먹어요. 왜 근데 홍석천은 먹어도 멋있는걸까요? 흠… 한 봉지를 다 먹진 않을지도 모르죠. 그건 제 문제에요! 그리고 운동건도 있고…

He snacks on junk food just like the rest of us. How come I don't look like him, though? Well, maybe he doesn't eat the whole bag. That's my problem! Then there's that exercise "thing"…

그리고 마지막으로, 더 화려한 스타킹! 우리는 저번 시즌에서 이런 스타킹 많이 봤는데 이런 스타킹은 정말 대담한 패션 리더들에게만 전해지지 않을까요? 그레이 자켓, 플라워 프린트, 초록색 스타킹, 호피무늬 오픈 펌프? 멋져요 언니! 우리의 눈에 확 들어왔어요, 이 사진 오른쪽에 잡힌 저 여자처럼 말이에요.

Last, but not least, more colorful stockings! We saw a lot of this from last season, and one wonders if this will translate down past just the fashion leaders and truly brave? Gray jacket, flower print, green stockings, and leopard-print, open-toed pumps? Sheet. You work it, girl. I know you caught our eyes, just like the girl at the right edge of the picture.

와일드하지만 어울리네요. 귀여워요, 약간 니뽄풍으로… 정말 귀엽고, 색다른 펑키룩이에요.

In the end, wild-yet-it-works. It's cute, in a Japanese-influenced sort of way. We likey. Very cute, and a different kind of funky look.

서울 패션 위크에서 긴 하루였어요. 사진도 많이 찍고, 사람도 많이 만나고, 포토샵도 많이 했죠! 악! 자야할 시간인거 같아요. 음…아니다, 일하러 가야될꺼 같네요, 이 리포트를 쓰느라 밤을 새서 말이에요. 앞으로 더 기대해주세요, 서울 패션 위크는 계속되니깐요~

It was a full day at Seoul Fashion Week, and a lot of snapping, networking, and editing in Photoshop for this post. Ugh! Time for bed. Er…or for work, since I stayed up all night writing this report. More later, though, as Seoul Fashion Week continues!

What did you do for Halloween? And what did you go as? Although Halloween isn't really a part of Korean culture, and isn't much of a fit with it until recently, either, most people do know what it is, even if most people aren't dressing up as naughty nurses or suckling succubi. And even at the few official Halloween parties that one can find around Seoul, outside of Hongdae, Itaewon, or Apkujeong, there aren't many people who actually bother to dress up.

That's why, when a friend invited me to a Yonsei-student-sponsored Halloween party thrown by a campus organization called the Mentors' Club, which focuses on fostering friendships between Koreans and foreigners, I simply had to go. I had heard that the MTV-sponsored party at the Circle club had essentially no one dressed up, and this site wanted Halloween pictures of people in Seoul.

So my friend saddled up in her best "bad schoolgirl" best and we were off to the party, being thrown in Hongdae. And it was a good mix of people – Koreans, kyopos, and non-Koreans were all in the house, and nearly everyone was dressed up. My friend looked great in her bad girl best, mostly because she is such a "nice girl" and so far from that costume in real life.

할로윈날에 뭐했나요? 그리고 뭘로 했나요? 할로윈은 원래 한국에서는 낯선 문화이지만 사람들이 많이 알게 됐어요. 그리고 해마다 이태원, 홍대, 압구정동에서 할로위 파티 좀 하는 거예요. 그래도 할로윈 파티해도 한국인 손님들이 할로위 복장을 잘 안 입더라고요. 그래서 한국에서는 할로윈 어떻게 하는지 보야주기는 좀…그래요. 그냥 많이 안하죠.

근데 우리 친구가 연대 무슨 한국인/외국인 우정협회 뭐 그런 동아리의 멤버인데 (Mentors' Club) 진짜 할로윈 파티를 만들었어요. 그렇게 초대 받았는데 갈 수 밖에 없었죠? 물론 몇 가지 다른 공식 할로윈 파티들이 있기 있었는데 내 듣기로는 진짜 열심히 복장을 만들고 입고 간 한국사람들이 거의 없었다면서요. 많은 주로 외국인들한테 만든 개인 할로윈 파티 말고 요즘에도 서울에서는 막 재밌었던 할로윈 파티가 없었던 같아요.

그래서 친구랑 그 동아리의 홍대 클럽을 필리고 만든 파티에가기로 했어요. 그 친구는 '배드 스튜덴트"이란 컨셉으로 복장을 준비했고 (웃기는 이유는 그 친구는 좀 모범생이니까 상상도 못 한 모습였어요!) 파티로 간 거예요. 이 친구는 보통 때 얼마나 착하게 생기는지 알았으면 이 사진을 잘 감상 할 수 있을 거예요. 진짜 웃긴 거예요.

There were a lot of creative costumes – more than I thought there would be. There was also a costume contest, but the winners (a pair of energetic young ladies wearing traditional Korean dresses and going crazy on stage with the Korean flags – you had to be there) took off before we could get a shot of it. We did get some good stuff, though. For example, sexy (resident) aliens?

도착했을 때는 많은 재밌는 복장들이 있었네요. 생각보다. 많은 사람들이 재밌고 창조적으로 자기 룩을 만들었어요. 복장 대회 했는데 1등을 잡은 한복을 입고 응원하는 애국자들을 (그 컨셉이 맞았나?) 못 찍었어요. 근데 재밌는 복장들이 많았어요. 예를들어서…섹세 외(국)계인?

Here, we got two cool dudes representing for the hilarious "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials. We've got them digested for you in a video below.

웃기는 Mac vs. PC로 나온 유명한 매킨토시 광고처럼 한 두 명. 이 웃기는 시리즈가 밑에 제공할꼐요.

Oooh! Fresh out of the shower! Naughty nurses – oh, my!

샤워에서 바로 나온 건셉? 음…멋쟁이? 그리고 미식축구 플레어? 오른 쪽에 섹시 간호사다. 뜨겁다!

That's the Japanese guy who won 2nd-place in the costume/dance contest, and he sure did grab the crowd's attention…as well as other things. Ahem.

여기 이 일본에서 온 친구가 복장 대회에서 2등을 잡았어요. 그리고 또 다른 걸…음…접았네요. ㅋㅋ 대단했어요!

Now here was an interesting costume: along with the cop, the girl was wearing what seemed like a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" slot machine, which seemed to be activated by putting in change, pulling down on the arm lever, and playing to see whether you won or lost. What a good idea – go to a party, make some money from your costume, and even get a little of the thrill of the wager.

좀 창조적인 건셉였네. 왼쪽에 경찰인 것같고 근데 오른 쪽에는 '가위바위보' 기계이네요. 동전을 놓고 오른 쪽 팔을 땡기면 가위바위보를 할 수 있어요. 똑똑하네! 파티 참석할 겸, 돈 벌겸, 돕ㄱ도 할 수 있는 거네요.

'08 S/S 서울컬렉션'에서 가장 흥미있었던 일 중 하나는 걸어다니는 팝 아트의 일부라 스스로 선언한 포퍼먼스 아티스트 낸시 랭을 만난 일이었어요.

One of the highlights for me at the Seoul Collection Spring/Summer '08 show was meeting performance artist Nancy Lang, the self-proclaimed piece of walking Pop Art.

그녀는 그녀의 고양이 코코 샤넬과 함께 있었어요. 코코는 살아있는 고양이가 아니라 봉재인형이라고 덧붙여 말하고 싶네요. 어른이 봉재인형을 가지고 있다는 것이 다소 어색하지만 그것을 공개적으로, 게다가 패션 이벤트의 일부로 가져오는 것은 쿨한 것 같아요.

She was there along with her cat, Coco Channel. I might add that her Coco is not a real live cat, but a stuffed animal. It's a bit strange for an adult to have stuffed animals, take them with them into public and more over, to take them to this kind of fashion event, but it was kinda cool.

그녀가 예술가이고 - 또한 귀엽구요 - 그래서 넘어갈 수 있어요 :-). 그녀를 만난 것은 매우 즐거웠고 그녀는 매우 멋졌기 때문에 우리가 대화를 나눌 수 있는 마지막 시간이 아니길 진심으로 바랍니다. 낸시가 블로그를 가져서 그녀가 하는 일, 생각, 사진, 먹는 것 등에 대해 정기적인 업데이트를 얻을 수 있었으면 좋겠어요. 전 사랑에 빠진 것 같아요~

She's an artist–and adorable–so she can get away with it. It was very cool to meet her and she was so fabulous I really hope it's not the last time we get to chat. I left her wanting more, more, MORE! I wish Nancy had a blog so I could get regular updates on what she's doing, thinking, taking pictures of, eating… I think I'm in love.
