Normally we here at fms love the fun fashion commentary at Go Fug Yourself. They're cool, they're hip, and they're usually spot on. But we must cry foul at their foul call for Sandra Oh's dress for the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards.

보통 우리 FMS 사람들은 Go Fug Yourself의 재미있는 패션 논평을 정말 좋아합니다. 멋지고, 앞서가며, 주로 딱 맞거든요. 하지만 우리는 Sandra 오의 SAG 시상식드레스에게 파울을 외친 Fug에게 파울을 외쳐야겠어요.

Korean stars have been wearing hanbok on the red carpet for some time now domestically, and some stars like Lee Young-ae have even showed it off at major international festivals like Cannes:

한국 스타들이 국내 레드카펫 위에서 한복을 입은 지는 꽤 됐어요. 그리고 이영애와 같은 몇 명의 스타들은 카느스와 같은 국제 이벤트에서 까지도 한복의 자태를 뽐냈어요.

So it's good that the hanbok is getting some exposure. But not enough apparently, because somebody decided to rip poor Sandra a new one, comparing the stylized bow to the sort of thing you see tied around fancy cars in silly commercials during the holiday season. An apology soon followed, but still . . . is it a bad dress? My Gomishin-clad self saw it and immediately thought, "Dang, that's a great modernized hanbok!" The colors and fabric are fabulous, and the stylized cut and drape still manages to be immediately identifiable as a hanbok, unlike some other modernized versions I've seen parading down runways. Yeah the bow is a little big in the first shot, but if we take a look at it from another angle:

따라서, 한복이 노출되는 것은 좋은 거에요. 하지만 충분하지 않나 봐요. 왜냐면 누군가가 Sandra에게 새로운 것을 만들어주기로 했거든요, 스타일화된 리본을 홀리데이 시즌에 나오는 우스운 광고 속 우아한 차들에게 묶여있을 법한 것들과 비교하면서 말이에요. 곧바로 사과는 했지만, 그래도… 정말 그것이 나쁜 드레스였나요?저는 보자마자 "와! 정말 멋지고 세련된 한복이다!" 라고 생각했어요. 색과 옷감도 멋지고, 스타일화된 컷과 드레이프는 그래도 한눈에 한복이라고 알아볼 수 있을 만해요, 보통 런웨이를 거닐던 다른 모던화된 한복들에 비해서요. 그래요, 솔직히 말해서 리본이 첫번째 사진에서는 조금 크네요. 하지만 다른 각도에서 보면…

That's pretty darned elegant. And are those pockets??? I want a hanbok with pockets!!!

정말 우아하다고요! 그리고 저기 보이는 것들 주머니에요??? 와, 나도 주머니 있는 한복 갖고 싶어요!!!

알어알어. 이런 패션은 오트쿠튀르아닌 걸 알아요. 그리고 원래 그런 한국스러운 얌전하고 너무 여성스러운 룩을 안좋아했어요. 근데 한국에서 살면서 좀 익숙해진 것같고 웬지 내가 갖고 있었던 앤티얌전함을 좀 잃어버린 것같네요.

그래서 이 연두색 원피스를 봤을 때 웬지 맘에 든 거예요. 알어알어! 촌스럽다고 생각할 사람들이 많이 있을 걸. 그래도 나름대로 레트로쿨인 것같아요. 물론 그 하늘색 가방 빼고. ㅋㅋ

I know that this isn't the height of fashion, but why do I like this dress? I know I shouldn't, but I've gotten used to the cutesy, 60's look in Korea, and I like the idea of outfits in general. The bag kinda kills it, though – she was already so green and white – why'd not continue the theme and complete the look?

But this is definitely a Korean look, and one that has its own kind of appeal and charm, once you get used to it and understand the personality that seems to go with it. I've been here too long, and am dedicated too much to reporting all the trends I can glean from the street to deny this style's holding power and presence on the street.

But does anyone think they know why she chose the blue-and-white bag? Any thoughts out there?

휴. 어렵네. 나도 잘 모르겠네요. 그 아디다스 세트는 좋아하는데…그리고 그 신발도 좋아하고…근데 서로 어울리는 건가? 아니면 내가 이 코디를 너무 어울리기 바라니까 판단력이 떨어지는 건가? 흠.

Sometimes, it's a hard call. I don't even know what I really think, here. I like the Adidas outfit, with the lavender and pale yellow – nice. But I don't know about the lace socks and blue denim/red wedges; I like the shoes themselves (fab!), but can't really decide whether the attempt to match them works, or I just want it to work so much that I am forgetting the fact that they don't. Hmm.

어느정도 내가 그 신발을 너무 좋아해서 그러는 것같아. 독자 여러분! 어떻게 생각들하십니까? 어울려요? 아니면 완전히 패션 범죄인가?

Part of me just likes shoes so much that I'd like the top and bottom to work; what do you think? Do they work, or is this outfit a fashion faux pas?

가끔은 패션범죄랑 싸우는 건 어렵고 헥갈리게 하는 일예요. 세상에 모든을을 다 흑백으로 판단할 수 없는 것처럼 범죄, 그리고 패션범죄들 중에 아주 애매한 것도 있어요. 오늘의 주제는 바로 그런 경우이예요.

한국에서는 많은 언니들이 여러가지 이쁜 티셔츠를 입고 다니는 거예요. 특히 이번 여름에 유행이 됐죠. 그리고 원래부터 영어로 나오는 건 멋지라고 생각하는 거죠? 미국에서도 80년대처럼 미국인 입장에서 불어로 나오는 건 고급스럽다고 생각하는 것처럼. 내 기억으로는 "esprit"이란 티가 많이 나왔더라고요.

근데 미국인으로써는 가끔 뭐라고 하고 싶어요. 물론 문법적으로 많은 틀린 경우 있는데 그 거 때문에 아니예요. 뭐 단어의 스펠링은 틀리면 어때? 그 거아니고, 가끔 좀…웃기는 경우도 있단 말이예요. 밑에 사진을 보면 그런 거예요.

Sometimes, life on the fashion beat is tough. Just like the rest of the world, even fashion crimes can't be judged in black-and-white terms. And cases like the one we face today make that clear.

Now, we know that a lot of the English-language t-shirts worn by fashionable fashionistas in Korea have some mistakes or even just plain don't make sense – linguistically. And that's fine. We're talking about how it looks, not the proper conjugation of verbs, after all. And Americans had all kinds of bad French on t-shirts in the 1980's, so who am I to point fingers?

But sometimes, as an American, I just want to stop people on the street and ask them if they know the message they're carrying, the irony or the humor that the words on their shirt do unfortunately bring.
Well, there aren't any problems with the design, shape, and or title graphics. On a fashion level, it's all looking pretty good. The problem is with where it come from:

뭐 디자인, 모양, 글씨 - 문제 없죠. 멋으로만 보면은 괜찮은데 문제는 그 재목과 상표가:

바로 미국에서 70년대 제일 인기 폭발됐던 논쟁적인 포르노 영화 재목과 상표이예요. 똑같이. 아마 이 여자는 모를 건데 (어머니랑 다니고 있었던 것같은데) 완전히 야한 포르노 제목의 의미(데비이란 인물이 달라스이란 도시의 모든 남자랑 했다는 뜻인데)하는 거예요. 밑에는 원래 홍보용 포스터:

This is the movie title to one of the most popular American porno films of the 1970's. It's the exact same symbol and title, down to the football. Since she's out walking with mom, apparently, in the shot above, I doubt she knows the meaning of the Debbie character who apparently…umm…"does Dallas." Below is the official movie poster.

Girlfriend with the t-shirt in the street picture above probably has no idea, right? Do you think she would care if she knew? Or do you think she knows, or that this is common knowledge, and hence, has a feisty spunk flavor to the t-shirt?

서울에서 사는 건 조아하지만 뉴욕을 많이 그리워해요. 그래서 거기서 사는 친구와 친척들이 많아서 다행이에요. 우리 친언니는 맨날 아직도 패션 소식을 해주는데 서울처럼 플랫슈즈가 아주 인기 좋대요. 근데 우리는 그런 스타일을 너무 싫어하고 우리같은 여자들은 stilletto를 너무 사랑하는 거예요. 물론 모든 사람은 나름대로 자기 좋아하ㅡㄴㄴ 스타일있겠지만 우리한테는 두가지 슈즈 종류있다고 생각해요: hot아니면 not. 좋아한다면='핫.' 싫다는 의미는='낫.' ^^

I really enjoy living in Seoul, but I miss living in New York City and I think about it every day. Luckily, I still have family and friends who live there to give me updates. My sister tells me that flats, in all different colors, with huge embellishments on the toe, are all the rage. She hates them and so do I, but then again we're the type of girls who prefer stilettos over flats. Everyone has their own opinion and style, of course, but in our world, shoes go into one of two categories, HOT or NOT HOT.

우와. 트별히 할말이 없는데 "Fabulous!"이란 말밖에 생각안나요. 너무 멋지고 진짜 큭이하네요. 근데 이 원피스, 화장품, 그리고 립글로스의 색깔은 좀 얌전한 편이니까 좀더 화려한 분홍색 귀거리나 팔찌를 썼으면 하네요. 매니큐어만이라도 화려하게…어떻게 생각하시나요?

Shim Eun-jin was looking great at Harisu's wedding yesterday, with shoes that were designed to stand out. I think she might have accented herself somewhere on top with a brighter hot pink to bounce back off her shoes – perhaps a bracelet and earrings or an interesting necklace – since her makeup and minidress, while nice, are a bit subdued for compared to her shoes. What do you all think?

오늘은 한국여성의 대표적인 '건방진 굽소리' ("sassy slap")에 대해서 얘기 하고 싶은데 참 재밌는 주제인 것같다. 미국사람으로써 진짜진짜 궁금했어요: '도대체 왜 샌들 제대로 안신고 다닐까?"

Today, I want to talk about the "Sassy Slap" walk, native only to Korea, which involves equal parts being too bothered to actually properly put on the strap of your slingback heels, and seeming to want to walk with the somewhat rude, somewhat sassy "slap-slap" of the shoes against the soles of the feet.

보통 내가 '건방진 굽소리' 봤을 때는 거의 값이 싼 구두와 아주 짧은 치마를 입고 다니는 여자였더라고요. 약간 야한 분위기이란 말이예요. 치마가 짧을 수록 '건방진 굽소리'를 들릴 수 있는 거네요. 아니면 아줌마였다. 많은 그렇게 다니는 사람들이 막 껍을 씁은 것도 같고요. 그래도 웬지 그런 여성들이 내 주목을 끌린 것도하고. 흠.

You'll see the "Sassy Slap" a lot in younger girls wearing cheaper shoes and short skirts. Although one might say there's unusual about it, I doubt any young lady would go "strap-o-sass" to visit an elderly relative or meet one's in-laws for the first time while popping gum, which often goes along with not completely putting on one's shoes. But I must admit that, done right, the strap-o-sass can be kinda hot.

한국에서만 그런 '건방진 굽소리'를 봤어요. 미국에서는 거의 본적이 없고 일본에서도 많이 못 봤네요. 모든 여자가 하는 것아니지만 꼭 그렇게 다니는 여자는 있어요. 좀 섹시하면서도 촌스럽기도 하고 어떻게 보면 참 한국스럽네요. 나름대로 매력적이고. 개인적으로 일본의 특별한 걸음은 - 귀여운 척하는 "안장다리" - 그 것보다 '건방진 굽소리'는 훨씬 더나아요.

Going along with her "Sassy Slap" is the kind of over-feminine strut that you get with women who really like to wear high heels. It's hard to explain, but it's kind of a step, sway, let-the-weight-settle, repeat; it also involves stepping down deliberately heel-first, enjoying each step in the strut. Usually, this is done with the toes pointed outward; if you've ever hung out with professional dancers, they often walk this way, with the feet out and relaxed. It's not the cutesy gait that goes along with stepping toe-first and walking pigeon-toed that a lot of Japanese women do, along with the high heel uninitiated.
