Here’s something from the Pusan International Film Festival. There were some interesting pieces but one in particular that stood out like a sore thumb was Lee Hwa-Sun.

요즘 한국에 여러 이슈들로 인하여 부산국제영화제가 빛을 바라지 못해서 아쉬운 점이 있지만 레드 카펫을 밟은 스타들이 참여해서 어느정도 잘 치뤄진 것 같다. 그중에서 정말 안타깝게 튀었던 스타중에 한명이 바로 이화선이다.

That thing looks as if she ripped it off from the wall from some illegal brothel run by the mafia. At least Scarlet O’ Hara ripped off her curtains for a reason because it was a time of war. What the hell was hers?

정말 헛구역질 나오게 만드는 의상을 입힌 코디가 난 이해가 안 간다. 무슨 불법 성매매 영업하는 곳에서만 볼수 있을 듯한 벽지로 만든 의상 같다. 바람과 함께 살아지다에 스칼렛 오하라는 전쟁 때문에 어쩔수 없이 커튼으로 옷을 만들었다 쳐도 그녀의 이유는 뭔지?

As for the best dressed, it had to be Jung Ryeo-Won. She happens to be one of my favorite actresses but that’s not the reason she’s up here. She really experiments with style and knows what’s best for her. She made a daring move by choosing a color that no other actress has attempted. I applaud her for that!

그 반면에 정려원이 입은 드레스는 그야말로 재대로인 것 같다. 대담한 색상 선택과 실루엣이 너무 예쁘다. 그녀의 스타일링은 항상 기대된다. 그녀 처럼 마른 걸들은 저런 엠파이어 스타일에 벨트 디테일 같은게 있는 드레스를 입으면 마른 체형을 커버 할수 있어서 더욱 더 예뻐 보인다.

(From FMS) We covered the Wonder Girls’ interesting style concepts before and “nostalgia marketing,” hated on them a bit for their bad-but-catchy music, and with the recent picture and their wondrous color coordination, they’re back in the loveworthy box again. I don’t care what anyone says — LOVE the colors, girls! (Umm, What do you think, EO?)

FMS가 말하기에 이번에 3집으로 돌아온 원더걸스에 컨셉이 맘에든다고 생각한다 면서 나에게도 어떠냐고 묻기에 좋은 시도라고 생각한다. 여태까지 걸그룹들에 컨셉은 항상 큐트나 섹시로 몰고 갔지만 드림걸스의 복고적인 느낌들이 나는 의상들을 보니까 신선하다.

My take on their outfits? They look great in music videos and when they’re on stage but they’re definitely not red carpet material. It’s not like the Destiny’s Child wore their Survivor costumes at movie premieres.

이 친구들이 너무 이쁘게 옷을 입은 거죠? 특히 원피스는 바로 여름이란 느낌이다. 그리고 산달은 너무 이쁜데 한국에서 처음 봤어요. 법적인 것 때문에 얼굴을 잘라야 되니까 액세서리를 잘 안보이는데도 귀거리 하나 나오는데 진짜 코디 잘한 사람이죠. 가방은 모르겠지만. 그래도 둘이 너무 이쁘지 않은가? Fresh!

Gotta say I loved these two looks. It just says summer, it says cool, and the minidress is fly. And these strappy sandals are new to my eye this summer, and really work. Gotta love the earring, too, although since I have to cut out the face for legal reasons, you can’t see how well she coordinated. She looked great. Don’t know about the bag, though. Black. Hmm. Still — freshness, I say!

Normally we here at fms love the fun fashion commentary at Go Fug Yourself. They’re cool, they’re hip, and they’re usually spot on. But we must cry foul at their foul call for Sandra Oh’s dress for the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards.

보통 우리 FMS 사람들은 Go Fug Yourself의 재미있는 패션 논평을 정말 좋아합니다. 멋지고, 앞서가며, 주로 딱 맞거든요. 하지만 우리는 Sandra 오의 SAG 시상식드레스에게 파울을 외친 Fug에게 파울을 외쳐야겠어요.

Korean stars have been wearing hanbok on the red carpet for some time now domestically, and some stars like Lee Young-ae have even showed it off at major international festivals like Cannes:

한국 스타들이 국내 레드카펫 위에서 한복을 입은 지는 꽤 됐어요. 그리고 이영애와 같은 몇 명의 스타들은 카느스와 같은 국제 이벤트에서 까지도 한복의 자태를 뽐냈어요.

So it’s good that the hanbok is getting some exposure. But not enough apparently, because somebody decided to rip poor Sandra a new one, comparing the stylized bow to the sort of thing you see tied around fancy cars in silly commercials during the holiday season. An apology soon followed, but still . . . is it a bad dress? My Gomishin-clad self saw it and immediately thought, “Dang, that’s a great modernized hanbok!” The colors and fabric are fabulous, and the stylized cut and drape still manages to be immediately identifiable as a hanbok, unlike some other modernized versions I’ve seen parading down runways. Yeah the bow is a little big in the first shot, but if we take a look at it from another angle:

따라서, 한복이 노출되는 것은 좋은 거에요. 하지만 충분하지 않나 봐요. 왜냐면 누군가가 Sandra에게 새로운 것을 만들어주기로 했거든요, 스타일화된 리본을 홀리데이 시즌에 나오는 우스운 광고 속 우아한 차들에게 묶여있을 법한 것들과 비교하면서 말이에요. 곧바로 사과는 했지만, 그래도… 정말 그것이 나쁜 드레스였나요?저는 보자마자 “와! 정말 멋지고 세련된 한복이다!” 라고 생각했어요. 색과 옷감도 멋지고, 스타일화된 컷과 드레이프는 그래도 한눈에 한복이라고 알아볼 수 있을 만해요, 보통 런웨이를 거닐던 다른 모던화된 한복들에 비해서요. 그래요, 솔직히 말해서 리본이 첫번째 사진에서는 조금 크네요. 하지만 다른 각도에서 보면…

That’s pretty darned elegant. And are those pockets??? I want a hanbok with pockets!!!

정말 우아하다고요! 그리고 저기 보이는 것들 주머니에요??? 와, 나도 주머니 있는 한복 갖고 싶어요!!!

알어알어. 이런 패션은 오트쿠튀르아닌 걸 알아요. 그리고 원래 그런 한국스러운 얌전하고 너무 여성스러운 룩을 안좋아했어요. 근데 한국에서 살면서 좀 익숙해진 것같고 웬지 내가 갖고 있었던 앤티얌전함을 좀 잃어버린 것같네요.

그래서 이 연두색 원피스를 봤을 때 웬지 맘에 든 거예요. 알어알어! 촌스럽다고 생각할 사람들이 많이 있을 걸. 그래도 나름대로 레트로쿨인 것같아요. 물론 그 하늘색 가방 빼고. ㅋㅋ

I know that this isn’t the height of fashion, but why do I like this dress? I know I shouldn’t, but I’ve gotten used to the cutesy, 60’s look in Korea, and I like the idea of outfits in general. The bag kinda kills it, though – she was already so green and white – why’d not continue the theme and complete the look?

But this is definitely a Korean look, and one that has its own kind of appeal and charm, once you get used to it and understand the personality that seems to go with it. I’ve been here too long, and am dedicated too much to reporting all the trends I can glean from the street to deny this style’s holding power and presence on the street.

But does anyone think they know why she chose the blue-and-white bag? Any thoughts out there?

휴. 어렵네. 나도 잘 모르겠네요. 그 아디다스 세트는 좋아하는데…그리고 그 신발도 좋아하고…근데 서로 어울리는 건가? 아니면 내가 이 코디를 너무 어울리기 바라니까 판단력이 떨어지는 건가? 흠.

Sometimes, it’s a hard call. I don’t even know what I really think, here. I like the Adidas outfit, with the lavender and pale yellow – nice. But I don’t know about the lace socks and blue denim/red wedges; I like the shoes themselves (fab!), but can’t really decide whether the attempt to match them works, or I just want it to work so much that I am forgetting the fact that they don’t. Hmm.

어느정도 내가 그 신발을 너무 좋아해서 그러는 것같아. 독자 여러분! 어떻게 생각들하십니까? 어울려요? 아니면 완전히 패션 범죄인가?

Part of me just likes shoes so much that I’d like the top and bottom to work; what do you think? Do they work, or is this outfit a fashion faux pas?
