What Koreans call the “미니 원피스” (mini “one-piece”) appeared on the scene last summer, but will be hitting like gangbusters this summer, according to that paper. Indeed, our cameras caught it creeping onto the streets of Seoul from the first days of warm weather, which our cameras spotted back in early April.

And as the summer approaches, the heat is definitely on. In combination with other trends, such as patent shoes, bright and/or metallic colors, and the ubiquitous retro leggings that are now de rigueur, variations from casual to cute are pretty common. I’ll let the article do the talking to my Korean readers:

셔츠형 원피스 안에 민소매 원피스를 입고 앞 단추를 잠그지 않은 채 벨트를 착용하면 세련된 느낌을 줄 수 있다. 하늘거리는 검정 스커트와 함께 입어도 좋다. 스키니진이나 레깅스 위에 입으면 캐주얼한 느낌을 살릴 수 있어 활용도가 높은아이템이다.

So expect to see these worn in combination with or even as t-shirts, along with the also-ubiquitous “skinny jeans” and other accessories to make the look more flexible, casual, and demure – especially for the more conservative dressers or women who don’t feel so comfortable with showing a lot of leg, which is common in a fashion culture where even having defined calf muscles causes people to think of themselves as having “daikon radish legs” – the dreaded 무다리. 이 흥미스러운 기사는 일간스포츠에서 나온 건데 하이힐을 너무 좋아한다면 꼬오옥 한번 읽어야 되는 글이다. 재밌어요:

여자의 몸에 맞추어 남자의 것이 커 줘도 되는데. 남자의 것을 크게 만드는 것은 연구를 안 하고 여자의 것을 줄이는 연구만 한 것이다. 남자는 여자의 발을 줄이고. 가리고. 친친 동여매야 안심할 수 있었다.

양귀비는 천하의 미인이었다고 한다. 발이 작아서 아름다웠다고 하는데 그 작은 발에 대해 상상을 해 본 적이 있는가. 과연 정말 아름다웠을까. 양귀비의 발은 마치 두 개의 작은 기형 괴물 같다. 양귀비가 신었으리라 추측되는 신발들이다.

와우. 근데 제가 대학생 때 배웠던 영화/문학평가론에러 나온 얘기인데. 생각해보면 하이힐을 신는 건 (보는 것만아니라) 대표적인 fetish이죠:

여자의 발에 대한 남자들의 견해는 동양이나 서양이나 다 같은 맥락으로 보인다. 서양에서 만든 여자 구두조차 발에 무리가 가도록 볼을 아주 좁게 만들었기 때문이다. 더군다나 힐을 아주 높여서 여자 몸의 볼륨을 만들었다. 동양의 양귀비 발과 서양의 하이힐. 도대체 섹스 어필을 얼마나 하기에 여자는 불평도 않고 그 고통을 감수하는 것일까.

여성이 남성에게 아름다운 모습을 보이고자 노력하는 것은 예나 지금이나 다르지 않다. 미국에 한동안 유행하던 코르셋과 허리를 졸라매는 스타일의 여성의류조차 여성들의 뼈를 변형시키고 장기를 뒤틀리게 했다.

여성의 패션을 위해 지금도 날마다 새로운 것이 발명되고 있다. 하지만 남자들이여. 한번 직접 착용해 보아라. 그리고 얼마나 고통스러운지 느끼길 바란다. 지금도 여성은 자신도 모르게 여자임을 과시하고자 고문 당하며 살아가고 있다. 아니 어쩌면 스스로 고문하는 것을 즐기며 살아가고 있는지도 모른다.

진짜. 아주 높고 좁은 stilletto 하이힐 신으면 어느 느낌인가? 자기는 물론 걷기도 더 힘들고 약해진 느낌을 나면서도 좀 성적인 자신을 생기는 것아닌가? 그 건 바로 하이힐은 자기 움직일 수 있는 자유를 줄이니까 약간 섹시한 취약함아닌가요? 코르셋 (corset) 마찬가치로?

“브리지트 바르도, 19인치 `개미허리` 파격 사진 공개!”이란 기사가 같은 간 일간스포츠에서 나오는데 놀라운 사실아니죠. Corset은 high heel하고 비슷한 역할한 거죠. 똑같은 심리적인 페티쉬이죠. 자극적으로 자기를 줄이고 약해보이고 몸에 한 부분만 강조하며서 성적인 맥락에서 뭘 일부러 보여주는 느낌.

나름대로 fetish이죠? 그리고 이정도 corset을 들어갈 수 있게 하려면 오랫동안, 기본으로 몇년동안에 해야죠. 위에 Brigette Bardot정도로 하려면 진짜 많은 트레닝 corset을 써야 되는데. 옛날 서양에서는 보통 어렸을 때부터 시작한 거죠. 19세기 때쯤 많은 의사들은 반대하기 시작했어요.

사실은 진짜 건강에 안좋았죠. 제대로 수쉴수 없어으니까 여자들이 잘 기절했어요. 그런 걸 old movie에서 보셨죠? 놀라운 사실이 발견되면 여자중인공은 바로 기절하는 모습.

옛날에¹ 여자들이 그런 delicate한 개성이 있엇죠. 그리고 기관들과 내장은 맡으로 내려간 거죠.

그래서 그런 심한 corset을 쓰는 시대에서 벗어났는데 그래도 그런 romantic 이미지 아직도 있죠? 그래도 섹시하죠?

그리고 Marilyn Manson이 결혼한 유명한 burlesque dancer와 fetish model로 인기있는 Dita von Teese한테 불어보시든지.

하이힐과 코르샛은 원래부터 관계 있었고 똑같은 느낌으로 여자의 자유를 줄이면서 어떤 부분들을 자극적으로 강조하는 거죠: 지나치게 커진 가슴, 작아진 허리, 동그러진 엉덩이, 그리고 아주높은 하이힐 때문에 길어지고 얇아진 달, 그리고 더 작아보이는 발.

옆에는 또 Dita van Teese인데 어떤 사진에서 동상으로 만든 건데 현대시대에서도 분명히 이 노스탈지아 남는 거예요. 몸짱아닌 여자라도, 이쁘지 않아도, 사실 남자라도 이런 페티쉬 물건들을 잘 쓰면은 섹시한 이미지로 나올 수 있어요.

이 fetish 문화는 대중문화롸 되는 거예요. 매트릭스 보셨죠? Trinity와 Neo의 의상은 그리고 거의 모든 Matrix에서 입힌 옷은 patent leather나 PVC이고 거의 모든 그 영화 시리즈에서 나온 night club이나 노는 데는 성적인 fetish 느낌였죠.

요즘에 이런 look는 유행이 다시 되는 거죠.

마지막에 이 Nigella Larson의 사진을 보여드릴께요. 유명한 영국cooking writer인데 멋진 패션슛으로 나왔는데 밑에 보면 분명히 서양어서도 여자를 걸어가지 못하게 (또 멀리 못가게) 하는 페티쉬 슈즈인데 corset dress하고 나오네요. 재밌는 컨셉이네요.²

The trend of the spring season is a no-brainer, and it’s already here. Well, the “ballet flat” has been in fashion for a couple years now, but as the dominant new trend, this year’s it.

The Lady Kyunghyang heralded the trend some time ago, and FMS has been confirming what most women already know – this is the “it” shoe right now:

아찔한 하이힐과 플랫폼 슈즈가 대세라고 해도 지난해부터 이어진 플랫슈즈의 인기는 여전하다. 이번 시즌엔 메탈릭한 소재, 반짝이는 스팽글 장식, 다채로운 프린트 등으로 화려해진 것이 특징.

If you’re not on the bandwagon, then you had better start chasing it; in other words, flats are in.

And on top of that, the metallic trend of the last season has merged into the color scheme – lots of shiny, metallic, and sparkly stuff is in store this spring.

Toes are more rounded, cuter. Pointy and flat is not the in thing, although there are some who try to hold the line.

Umm, no. Not working for me. But for the most part, cute and rounded is the way to go.

This one’s great, no? Love the shoes, love the matching, love the “subtle.” Tasteful and cute.

Vintage – not my cup of tea, but I respect the style. Old school laces and casual, with a little shimmer. Nice.

This was an extensive post I was supposed to put up a long time ago, but just never quite finished it.

You know, we all know – the 80’s have returned.

Tight jeans are back, pumps are back, even neon colors are back.

Especially pink.

Shades of colors from pure, primary red to pimpin’ purple are everywhere. Cute pink, hot pink, and pretty pink have not only returned, but are back with a vengeance.

그 걸 아시죠? 당연히 아시겠죠 – 80년대 다 시 돌아온 걸. 이 사진을 보시면 원래 Halloween 복장 가게의 사이트에서 찾은 “Shoes from the 80’s”이란 사이트인데 웃기는 건 모든 예날에 인기있었던 신발은 인제 리바이벌 패션이 된 거잖아요. 신기하며 무섭다고 생각해요. 80년대에서 벗어 난 줄 알았는데… ㅠㅠ

The young lady spotted below was in veritable pink overdrive, and exuding girlish coquettishness in a way that is hard to convey in writing or even through photographs. She was trying to meet someone – male, I guessed from her tone of voice and expectant eagerness – and was dressed to kill. From the way she walked, she wasn’t taking any prisoners.

이 언니는 너무나 이쁘게 나오려고 했고 그 super-pink구두로 성공한 거예요. “우와! 대단하다”고 생각할 수 밖에 없었어요, 첨 봤을 때. 어떤 남자를 만나려고 나온 건데 – 막 귀여운 목소리로 통화하고 끊고 통화하고 위치를 성명하고 또 찾아보는 걸 보니까 – 그리 걷는 모습을 봤으면…야아아아…일단 대단한 겅Uㅆ어요.

근데 제일 눈에 띈 건 신발말이예요. 이 신발을 인터넷상에서 못 찾았는데 (아마 무슨 동대문 작은 개인 디자이너의 가게에서 샀을 걸) 내가 봤을때 좀 화려하면서 특이하고 좀 이쁜 것같아요.

누구 더 멋진가요? 이 윗언니는 좀 괜찮은 거아닌가요? 밑에 언니는 좀…뭐랄까? 촌스러운가? 오바인가? 웬지 위에 신발 맘에 드는데 밑에는 좀…아줌마스럽다고 할까?

Inevitable, we have to deal with the question of whether anyone can ever be too pink. Ya think? Is it possible?

Well, in theory, yes – too much pink is definitely possible. But if you can pull it off, well…

근데 이반에 minidress 오는 걸 알지오? 미국인으로써 한국 패션보니까 와우! 점점 미국보다 훨씬 더 짧아진 거예요, miniskirt들이. 대단하당!

Things this summer are going to get all the more mini, it seems. Fashion’s going to get hotter, the shoes more central, and the times more interesting. It seems that skirts are getting shorter and shorter in the Land of the Morning Calm than in the US; we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

The English Chosun has an interesting article about something we’ve been talking about for some time now. The title is a bit dense – “Turning Heads Make Skirts Rise” – but the article has a few interesting statistics, mostly based on Gmarket sales.

According to the article:

“Mini-skirt fever which started this summer looks like staying for months to come, as super-mini skirts and hot-pants just 25 cm long are selling like hot cakes at online shopping malls.

Normally discounted during the hard-to-sell cold weather season, short skirt sales have gone through the roof since the winter months began to show their colors. Online shopping mall G-market is currently selling on average15,000 mini-skirt and hot-pants per day, with some 450,000 units sold in October alone, a 10 percent increase from their summer season turnover.”

Miniskirts getting shorter during the winter? Noooooooooo. In Korea? Say it isn’t so. It’s funny that many Koreans still associate risqué clothing with the United States, when I can safely say that more skin tends to be shown in the course of everyday Korean fashion than anything in the United States, which, taken as a whole, isn’t as revealing as in Korea. Especially in the winter, when temperatures get below zero in many parts of the US, one doesn’t often see what Koreans cheekily call 똥코 치마 or “boodie hole skirts” and high heels.

Still, many Koreans like to point out that this must be an influence from the outside, rather than perhaps a sign of fashion and style changes happening from within. In reaction to Uhm Jeong Hwa’s recent performances in scanty attire:

“One irate Internet user posted opinion on the MBC’s audience notice board saying, “How can she come out on stage with those embarrassing, indecent clothes. Did she really have to come dressed in clothes that women might have worn in the 70s or 80s in cheap bars, and on a public channel, when families were watching?” Another Netizen admitted to feeling “very embarrassed” watching the display with his parents. “This is Korea. Why doesn’t she go and live in America?” he added. Related articles on major portal sites like Naver were flooded with replies condemning her getup.”

And the rise of thigh-high stockings and legging? Well, the leggings can be read as part of the ongoing 80’s retro trend that comes from the US, but those are largely about tight leggings (and tight jeans are a related ongoing trend) that are generally at least opaque. The Korean interpretations of this trend are just a bit more risqué.

Korean leggings seem to range from opaque to fairly sheer and transparent. Moreover, the Korean tights you see these days tend to have sparkles and other little bangles, spangles, and other bojangles.

Case in point? Two young ladies spotted at the same wedding, being a little bit less than conservative, although fashionable in their own ways. Tasteful, although not quite appropriate for a wedding, I must point out.

I was a bit more surprised at the more risque black and sparkly silver outfit – not only for just being at a wedding, but in being kind of ruined by by the boring Mary Janes she came in wearing. Star-spangled sparkles and dull, felt Mary Janes? Uh-uh.

To fix this outfit, she needed to have something like these Baby Phat mary janes from Zappos.com, the tips of which would have nicely accented her gold-speckled purse, along with the little dingle-dangle off the side of one of them.

It’s not my personal taste but it would have gone with what she was apparently trying to do, which was mix “sexy” with “playfully demure.” Sorry – didn’t work.

Alternatively – and more tastefully – these shoes are a little less wild, have some silver highlights in them from the pewter, but have a classier high heel than what the young lady was wearing above. These are from Pollini, which are available through Bluefly.com.

The point here is that “with great accessory options, come great responsibilities.” My suggestion amidst this whole short skirts/gaudy stockings/thigh high holidays?

1. Dress appropriately for formal functions, even if not temperature.
2. Match shoes and clothes with more thought, please. There’s more than just color.
3. Make the trend fit you, instead of you trying to fit into all trends. Clothes look different on different bodies.

That’s all I have to say right now. Now that Thanksgiving is here (for Americans, at any rate), the Christmas shopping season is officially here. Get dressed, go out, look good – and Happy Holidays!

Short skirts, ruffles, and simple looks seem to be the dominant themes this season. What does this mean to Seoulites? Overall, not too many drastic changes from last year. But here are some things to watch out for…

Skinny pants and short skirts aren’t going anywhere – they’re here for the next season as well – as are gold and metallic purses, prints, and other materials. We’ll definitely see more of these on the streets of Seoul (metallic, reptilian, and other animal patterns are clearly all the rage this season).

Also, keep your eyes open for jackets worn as dresses, cinched waists, and more higher heels.

Wow. White boots. Winter. Wear?

What do you think of white boots?

For me, the first thing that comes to mind is that they would be really, really tough to clean. The second thing that comes to mind is how difficult it is to make them not look…tacky.

I think this young lady gets away with it quite well, don’t you? I caught her walking past me, and she looked great in her winter wear, with blue hat and white coat.

Also, you might notice that her stockings are actually blueish/purple and not black. It goes together better with her blue top and blue hat. Her miniskirt is safely neutral, a shade between black and gray.

I think she would have looked fabulous if she had been wearing that white sweater, along with her red bag for a nice accent.

화이트 부츠는 좋아하나요?

위에 그 이쁜 여자는 생각해서 옷도 잘입은 거같아요. 스타킹은 약간 줄무늬색으로신었고 (검정색아니고) 하늘색 상의와 모자랑 어울리는 거며 하얀 스웨터랑 빨간색 가방은 딱 필요하는 악센트하는 거예요.

되게 스마트하다.

근데 하얀 부츠자체 이쁘다고 생각해요? 이쁘게 신고 다닐 수 있다고 생각하지만 개인적으로는 2가지 문제 있어요.

#1 - 서울은 대도시이니까 관리하기 너무 힘들다. 앗 - 시골에서도 문제가 되겠네. ㅋㅋ 알아서 하시죠?

#2 - 멋지게 신고 다니는 건 좀…어려워요. 잘 못 신으면…어울리는 옷/악세사리랑…쉽게 촌스럽게 돼요. 더욱더 관리 잘안하면 그런 촌스러운 효과가 나와요. 자신이 있어요? 있으면…야호오오오오오우!!! ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

진짜로 근데 그 Chanel 부츠는 큰 영향 미친 거죠 - 2006년 fall season 쇼에서 나온 것. 내 개인적인 충고를 맏고 싶다고요? 언느들아…단순한 검정색이나 어두운 배경으로 (깜은 양말, 어두운 치마, 상의) 아니면 티 안나는 pattern이랑 신으세요. 제발. Chanel 모델들이 다 그렇게 하는 건데…Chanel모델보다 자신이 있다고요?!

와우. 대단하다. 그러면 fighting! ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Seriously, girls. Wear those white boots with pride of you have what it takes to pull them off, but wear them with a dark color palette as a background. Don’t get all crazy with it, since you…will…pay.

It just takes a little to mess up the look. My opinion? This boot almost works here, except that it doesn’t. If you think about it, they look like white rainboots, because the transition from coat to dark brown (!!!) stockings to white boots is too abrupt.

I don’t know about her clothes, but I’m not feeling the look as I see it here.

이 여자의 부츠는 거의 멋지는 건데 너무 갑작스럽게 막 티 나는 것같네요. 80% 좋지만 맨 윗여자의 분위기보다 좀 떨어지죠? 칼색(!!!)스타킹하고 좀 초록/회색(?) 코트랑 신은 거니까 그러나봐요.

It’s official. As of today, October 23, it was cold enough for me to have to wear a coat.

추웠죠? 오늘 부터 코트 입어야 했으니까 공식적으로 가을이란 뜻이죠. 네 입장네서, 일단. ㅋㅋ

Since I am always the last person to start wearing warm clothes, if it is cold enough for me to bundle up, then it is usually too cold for any shorts or sandals.

아마도 그저께까지 봤던 아직도 summer sandal신고 다니는 몇 언니들이 인제 드디어 포기해야 할 것같아요. 아니면 눈이 올 때까지 신고 다닐까요? 한국 젊은 여성들이 특별히 short skirt좋아하니까 아무리 추워도 똥코침마 입는 사람들이 볼 수 있어요. 참. 대단하다, 일단!

Korea is one of the only countries in the world where the colder it gets, the more miniskirt lengths seem to go up! Well, I am exaggerating  a little bit here for effect, but you know what I’m talking about, right? Short skirts in the winter – I never saw much of that back in Ohio, when it was 20 degrees outside and snowing. In Seoul, well – there’s always someone.

근데 이 사진을 보면 따뜻한 fall이란 느낌이 와요. 물론 miniskirt입고 입고 있지만 (원래 미국에서는 미니스커트의 정의는: 서있으면서 무릅과 스커트의 가두리 사이에 4가지 손가락 놓을 수 있다면 미니스커트이예요) 웬지 따뜻한 느낌이 오네요. 이 언니 좀 토실토실하고 귀여워서 그런가요? 기분 나쁘게 받아들이지 말고 이 언니는 나무 귀엽다고 생각하니까 말하는 거고 사진을 찍었어요.
