아시다시피 한국, 일본에서는 크리스마스는 가정적인 홀리데이아니라 로맨틱 홀리데이죠. 신촌 메가복스에서 <나는 전설이다>를 보고 나왔던이 이 귀엽고 사랑스러운 커플 봤어요. 진짜 크리스마스 분위기같았더라고요.

As many of you might know, Christmas in Korea or Japan is a romantic holiday, as opposed to the more family-oriented affair that it tends to be in America. Yesterday, coming out of the Shinchon Megabox after having seen the very scary <I Am Legend>, we spied this very cute, very starry-eyed couple that really seemed to embody the Korean holiday spirit.

어떻게 만났냐면 사회봉사 동아리에서 좋아하게 됐대요. 같은 대학교를 다니고 있는데 이 여학생이 실내디자인을 배우고 있고 남자친구는 기계차동차공학을 배우고 있대요.영화 같이 봤던 내 친구는 유명한 Tom Dixon이랑 한국에 대한 실내디자인 책을 준비하고 있으니까 진짜 잘 만났네요! 웬지 우리 말을 걸고 사진을 찍게 된 사람들이 70-80% 디자인쪽에 일하더라고요.

When I asked them how they met, they replied that it was in a social volunteering club on campus, where she is an interior design major and he is in mechanical engineering for automobiles (if my translation is correct). As my companion for the movie just happens to be working on a book with Tom Dixon that covers interior design in Korea, it was quite a fortuituous meeting! In retrospect, it seems like 70-80% of the people we stop on the street and photograph are involved in some kind of design. I guess one’s interests really does translate into what you wear and you carry oneself.

What are you going to do this Christmas? The cute couple we talked to said they were going to take a little, although when I asked where, they actually hadn’t yet decided. Still, it shouldn’t matter, since wherever they go will be fun, since they’ll be together, right? Ah, youth. And a Merry Christmas from Seoul!

신촌에서 활영했다가 막 떠나면서 이 예쁜 언니가 내 눈에 띈 거예요. 버스를 잡으려고 막 뛰어서 지나갔길래 순간적으로만 옷, 가방을 보게 된 거예요. 근데 그 드레스가 좀 특이해서 꼭 이 여자를 잡아야 되겠다고 생각했어요. 그냥 넘어가고 나중에 후회할 가봐 가서 얘기하기로 결심을 했어요. 뭐랄까? 너무 우와해보이니까 거절할 것같아서 말을 걸기 싫어했거든요. 근데 물어보니까 너무 친절하셨고 그리고 우리 때문에 버스를 노친 거예요. 사실 우리 때문에 몇번 노치신 거죠. 그리고 보통 촬영하면서 “무슨 일하세요?”라고 물어보잖아요? 역시 슈디자이너라고고. 속으로 “내 눈이 정확하지?”라고 생각한 거예요. ㅋㅋ

On the way to leave a night of shooting in Shinchon, I spied a woman running by with the coolest dress and flyest bag I’ve seen in a long time. And she also just seemed well put-together. I was with another writer-hopeful for the site, and she was wondering why I had gone sprinting after someone whom I had barely even gotten a good look at; but I trusted my instincts and absolutely needed to do a street-stop with her and at least ask about taking a picture. As I always say, what’s the worst that can happen? She say “no”? She was quite friendly and flattered that we had asked. When we asked her what she did, she said that she was a shoe designer. Now, ain’t THAT just a coincidence! Well, that explained her refined sense of taste, ahem, and my astute ability to pick them out of a crowd.

아쉬운 게 드레스를 좀 더 보여줘달라고 했을 걸요. 너무 특이해서. 근데 가방이 너무 맘에 든 거고 (그냥 Prada이라서 좋아하는 거아니고 진짜 이쁘잖아!) 그리고 코트, 신발 은근히 여성스럽게 귀엽고 서로 어울리는 거예요. 한가지 좋아하는 것보다 모든 요소는 너무 좋은 거네요.

We loved her dress (which I regret not asking her to pull back the coat to show more of), her bag (not just because it’s Prada, but because it’s a hot bag!), as well as her cute coat and shoes. It all just went came together into a real classy package, with an interestingly designed dress as a centerpiece.

연세 많으신 분들을 잡고 사진을 찍는 건 너무 어려운 일이예요. 왜냐하면 보통 우리가 가르쳐달라고 하는 전화번호, 메일 주소, 네이트 아뒤가 없는 거잖아요. ‘온라인 패션 잡지’를 한다는 것도 좀 낯선 거예요, 우리 설명할 때. 그런 것들 다 없다고 하니까요. 근데 이 멋쟁이 할아버지께서는 old-fashioned(구식적)아니고 old school(고풍스런)스타일이니까 상관 없었어요. 우리가 너무 이상한 것같았더라고요. 왜냐하면 Yves Saint Laurent에 의하면: “패션은 희미해지지만 스타일은 영원하다.”

It’s difficult stopping older folks in the street, because it always seems like they’re in a hurry. And explaining that we were taking a picture for an online magazine, or asking for the standard email address, chat ID, and mobile phone number that we do for our street models seemed a bit irrelevant here, since he didn’t have any of those. But we didn’t see him as old-fashioned, but rather old school, which makes a big big difference. You see, even with old-school style, the fashion may change, but, as Yves Saint Laurent once said, “style is eternal.”

And is that a feather in his cap, or is he really that pimped out? That’s one granddaddy of a stylin’ granddaddy. I hope I’m this stylish when I’m this old; heck, I’m not even this stylish now. Dang, granddad! Work it!

The Fashion Spot이란 사이트에서 좋은 링크를 받았네요! 우리 사진을 많이 올려줬고 대게 좋은 얘기를 해주는 것같아요. 그리고 우리도 동의해요: 더이상 한국의 길거리 패션을 이상하게 보면 안되고 이젠 한국패션은 볼만 하니까요. 진짜 작년, 올해부터 다양성, 개성, 독창성을 진짜 보일 수 있고 느낄 수도 있어요. 그래서 이 The Fashion Spot이란 국제 포름에서 한국패션을 그냥 ‘아시아’ 카테고리에 대충 넣지말고 이젠 한국이 - 일본처럼 - 자기 카테고리를 받아야 돼죠. 우리 잡지의 사진들을 사용해줘서 고마워요! 우리 영광입니다!

We just got linked to a really cool street fashion site called The Fashion Spot, and were flattered to find out that someone was loading our pictures up as a part of their eagerness to show how much Korean street fashion has come in a very short time. As was mentioned here before, Korean fashion has just been starting – since just last year or even this year – to seem truly international, filled with much more variety, and combined with the quirks of one’s own personality.

So, Fashion Spot poster, kudos for saying that Korea deserves its own category, apart from being lumped in with Japanese style, which has always been the fate of anything coming out of Korea. It’s now time to recognize Korean fashion!

We just came back from Seoul Fashion Week, and we have a lot to report, and are busy editing pictures, translating videos, and generally just processing all the things that happened to us. It was, in a nutshell – amazing!

우리 방금 서울 패션 위크에서 돌아왔어요. 웹사이트에 올릴 이야기도 너무 많고, 사진들을 편집하고 동영상을 번역하는데 정신이 없네요. 너무 많은 패션정보들이 막 쏟아지고 있어요. 한마디로 말하자면, 정말 굉장해요!

서울에도 뉴욕이나 파리, 도쿄와 같은 패션 위크가 있다는 걸 알고 있었나요? 모르고 있었어도 괜찮아요. 예전에 몇번 행사를 한 적이 있었지만 이번에야말로 성대하게 치루어진 첫번째 서울 패션 위크라고 할 수 있으니까요. 모두 한국 디자이너들의 작품들로 이루어진 이번 행사에는 긍정적인 열기로 가득했고, 해외에서 온 디자이너와 바이어들이 많은 관심을 보였어요.

Did you even know Seoul had a Fashion Week, just like New York, Paris, or Tokyo? Well, don’t worry if you didn’t – this is really the first year it’s taken off big, even though some shows have been done in the past. But it was all Korean designers, all positive energy, and attracted many international designers and buyers.

물론 우리 사이트는 패션산업계의 하이 패션보다 거리에서의 패션을 더 많이 다루기 때문에, 서울 패션 위크 행사장에 만난 사람들의 스타일과 트렌드를 꼼꼼히 담아서 왔답니다. 하긴 패션쇼만큼 거리의 패션을 잘 다룰 수 있는 곳이 어디있겠어요? 재미있는 것은 아마도 우리팀만이 런어웨이의 모델들이 아닌 행사장에 참가한 사람들의 옷차림에 더 관심을 가지고 취재한 사람들이라는 점이지요.

And of course, since we’re more a street fashion site than high fashion, we were there recording all the styles and trends that were expressed through the everyday people we met there. Indeed, what better place for street fashion than a fashion show? I believe we were the only people there to track the fashion of the attendees, as opposed to the runway models.

이날은 정말 옷이 몸에 달라붙을만큼 더웠어요. 학교 커뮤니티를 통해 만난 사진 정모에서 만난 사람들과 특이한 카페에서 열을 좀 식힌 다음 홍대 놀이터로 올라오는 계단에서 fms가 이러는거예요. “좀 얼터너티브한 사람들 사진 찍고 싶은데.” 그런 말을 하자마자 고개를 드는데 바로 눈 앞에 이 펑키한 룩을 가진 여자분이 앉아계시는 것 아니겠어요? 이건 열려라 참깨도 아니고 흥부의 소원빌기도 아니여..

We were walking around in Hongdae when we this young lady with an interesting alternative look caught our eye. Not only was she the very image of Hongdae in terms of embodying youth, music, and cool fashion, she also had a bad-ass tattoo on her arm, which was very real. We asked.

우와. 또 감사합니다. 왜냐하면 한국에서는 요즘에 사진작가들을 보 고 너무 의심스럽거나 나쁘게 보니까 가끔 안타까울 때 많아요. 요즘에 ‘몰카’나 ‘도촬’이나 ‘변태’이란 말을 먹을 때 있어요. 사실은 프로 사진작가들이 피사체의 기분, 초상권, 다 신경을 많이 쓰는데 그런 의도 안좋은 사람들때문에 (’사진작가’를 안 부를께요) 일반 사람들이 사진의 대해서 너무 부정적으로 생각하고 있어요. 그런 ‘몰카족’이나 ‘개똥녀’이란 사건을 만든 사람들이란 말이예요. 그러니까 한국사람들이 대부분 사진, 사진기한테 관심이 많은데 서로 모르는 사람들의 사진을 잘 안찍잖아요. 그래서 많은 다른 나라보다 ‘스트리트 사진’이란 장르가 아예 없어졌고 그리고 사진기가 있을 때 사람들이 민감해져요. 많은 사람들이 너무 쉽게 잊어비린 사실은 Henri Cartier-Bresson하고 Walker Evans도 ‘스트리트 사지작가‘들이었어요. 위대한 김기찬처럼. (또 여기.) 그 사진작가들이 맨날 욕이나 소송을 먹을 가봐 걱정한 거면 이란 휼륭한 이미지 존재하지 않았을 거예요.

Wow. I have to thank you again. Why? Because it’s really frustrating to work in Korea as a photographer, since people tend to be so suspicious or even negative to photographers. These days, one gets called a “hidden cameraman” or “stealer of images” or even “pervert” when taking pictures of others. In reality, professional photographers take a lot of care about the feelings of their subjects, their legal rights to their image, and how it will affect them; but because of those who don’t (and I won’t even call them “photographers”), we have incidents such as with “dog poop girl” or the “secret camera crews” who take harrassing pictures of women on street corners in full view, even after being asked to stop. So it’s no wonder that, no matter how much Koreans generally seem to be interested in cameras and photography, people are afraid to take pictures of one another. And this is one reason that “street photography” is dead as a genre in Korea. People often forget the fact that Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans were street photographers, as was the great Kim Ki-chan. If they were so afraid of lawsuits or insults, then would we have these images?

아… 일요일 서울의 이대나 신촌거리엔 커플들이 많다. 여친이나 남친이 없는 싱글이면 속상할 정도로 많은 거죠. 그리고 비지니스들이 거의 커플전용인데: 커피샵, 아이스크림, 패미리레스토랑, 극장, 등등. 완전히 ‘커플의 문화’가 있다고 할 수 있는 거예요. 그리고 이 문화에서는…한국에서…남자가 여친의 가방을 들어줄 때 많아요.

사실 미국사람으로써 상상할 수 없는 일이예요. 왜냐하면 여자의 가방을 만지는 것도 실례일 수도 있어요. 여자의 가방은 자기 비밀들이 들어가 있어서. 그리고 패션쪽으로 생각하면 여자의 가방은 바로 자기 옷이랑 꼭 함께 나와야 되는 거라고 생각해요. 그래서 미국에서는 “가방을 들어줄께” 그 것은 상상할 수 없는 일이예요. 여자한테 잘한다고 배려주는 거라고 생각도 안해요: 아예 있을 수 없는 생각이니까요.

근데 한국은 다른 나라, 다른 문화예요. 미국여자가 자기 가방을 죽도록 양보하면 안된다고 생각하는 거랑 반대로 한국여자들이 즐겁게 자기 남자친구들한테 가방을 많이 주는 거죠. 서로 기분 좋게. 귀엽게. 사랑스럽게. 그래서 윗사진에서 남자분이 자기 잠바 여친한테 입게 하는 것, 가방을 들어주면서 - 그 모습은 되게 귀엽네요. 아주 한국스러운 모습. 그리고 왠지 서로 아주 많이 사랑하는 느낌이 나죠. 이렇게 배려주는 건 자연스러운 것같아서.

Ah, Sunday in Seoul. On any given Saturday or Sunday in the big city, you will find certain neighborhoods full of couples. The area near (and between) both Yonsei and Ewha Women’s Universities are so full of couples, one feels strange to not be in one. And the area is chock full of places catering to both couples, or small groups of women – “family” restaurants such as Outback or TGI Friday’s, a million coffee shops, and a mixture of specialty ice cream, dessert, and other kinds of places to eat things not good for you. And as is the fashion in Korea, it is considered courteous for the man to carry the woman’s bag.

But, as an American, I can’t help but think traditionally: the purse is part of the woman’s outfit – and the funny difference is that most American women would never relinquish their bag to a man. Still, I think that men are putting a lot more effort into their appearances than they used to, but with the new influences of hip hop/skater/punk cool, men aren’t really supposed to look “dressed up” but yet are really putting effort into the details of their look, down to the exact amount of battering their jeans take and where, and how scuffed their shoes are. It seems to be part of a very calculated look that says, “I’m a man and secure enough to use my girlfriend’s accessories as my own personal bling.”

And I just have to ask – is this bag not fabulous? Nice choice, girlfriend! And it’s pretty representative of the continuing trend of having big bags with metallic “futurist” materials. Her dress is also typical of the more simplifying trends of less complex or “mod” patterns, and they say that this year, “gray is the new black.” Well, girlfriend’s gray and silver all over, and in a way that definitely works.

근데 패션잡지이라서 한번 자기 원래 옷과 액세서리로 바뀌줘달라고 했죠. 이 모습도 너무 멋지지 않아요? 남자는 좀 쿨한 스포티 룩, 여자는 아주 이쁘게 나오고. 아주 사랑스러운 표정을 하면서. 우와. 좋은 ‘사랑의 모델’들이네요. 그래도 여자가 자기 가방을 들고 다시 포즈를 잡으니까 좋잖아요. 가방은 너무 이뻐서요.

For the sake of fashion, I had the couple switch back to their original clothes and accessories for another shot. What you might notice about the man is he seems far more dressed down than his companion, I think, to Western eyes; in the Korean context, I do see an ongoing trend that’s a definite change from even ten years ago, when it was common to see men on dates who were simply casual, with no real effort having been placed on their appearance. Or you saw men in suits, dressed to the nines. As I just noted above, this is changing, and fast.

Nowadays, the trend for men isn’t necessarily getting more formal; rather, it’s getting more purposeful. What I mean by this, is that in a masculine look influenced more by hip-hop and “skater” looks, which has formed into a more masculine look, a macho chic that is a strong counterpoint to the “metrosexual” and quite frankly very effeminate look that is also popular among Korean men these days. In a way, the girl dressed to kill on the arm of a man who is content to enjoy the woman as the center of fashion attention just seems somehow to work in the Korean context.

근데 이 사진을 찍은지 좀 오래 되서 오늘은 이메일이 왔었어요. 이렇게 나왔는데요:

싸이트에 저희 사진이 안 올라진건지 찾을 수가 없어서요..ㅎ

사실, 4일인 이번주 화욜날 남자친구가 군대를 갔꺼든요,

그래서 남자친구도 머리가 짧았던거구요-

이렇게 멜 드린건,

잘 나왔든 안 나왔든 상관없이 남자친구랑 같이 나온 사진들,

혹 보내주실 순 없으실지 여쭤보려고 메일 드려요..^-^

답 메일 기다리겠습니다.

우와. 감동적이다. 사실, 이 사진들이 너무 잘나왔으니까 좀 좋은 글이랑발표하고 싶었던 거예요. 근데 다른 입장으로 생각하면 그 커플이 잘 안나온 줄 알 수 있겠다고 느껴진 거예요. 그래서 빨리 올리고 싶었고 그리고 이 말을 알리고 싶었네요: 이런 사랑스러운 사연까지 받아보게 되어서 진짜 깊은 좋은 사랑인 것같으시네요. 제대후 이 여자분 꼭 기다리고 있을 것같아요. 그러니 남자분! 성실히 부담없이 자기 나라를 지킬 수 있을 거라 생각해요.

But just tonight, a funny thing happened. I got an email from the young lady in the picture, which translated like this:

Hello. I’m the girl who wore the gray dress with permed hair.

And my boyfriend was the guy with the white t-shirt and the really short buzz cut -

We couldn’t find the picture on the site or if you uploaded them.

Actually, my boyfriend went off to do his military service last week on Tuesday the 4th.

That’s why my boyfriend’s hair was so short that day.

So I’m sending you this mail,

because whether or not the pictures of us together turned out well,

I was wondering if you could send the pictures to me.

I’ll wait for your reply.

Wow – that really tugs at the heartstrings. Actually, these pictures came out really well – one of the best sets we’ve taken so far – but we were waiting to finish our Ewha series and also wanted to make sure we had time to write great text to go with it. And it is a portrait set that actually made us happy to make – seeing such earnest and eager love like that actually put us in a better mood and was a real pleasure to shoot. And I do remember telling them that this would be a great memento – I just had no idea how much so.

So what we’d like to tell this young couple is to not worry: one doesn’t see this kind of deep love expressed so clearly in pictures like this, as it’s literally written all over their faces. For the young man in the picture, you should go serve your country without any worries, as we really believe that this young lady will be waiting for you when you return.

And to the young lady, we hope these pictures will make the long wait a bit more bearable. Good luck to both of you!

Street Peeps는 우리들의 눈길을 끌고 질문을 던지게끔 호기심을 유발하는 이들을 가리킵니다. 아마도 그의 패션이나 태도 혹은 내면에 숨겨져 있는 뭔가가 느껴지기도 하겠죠. 전철 옆자리나 줄을 서서 대기하는 사람이나 혹은 길거리에서 스쳐 지나가는 이들처럼 우리 주변에는 주목할만한 인물이 많고 우리는 그들에게 말을 건내지 않지만 Street Peeps에서는 이 기회를 붙잡아 여러분들께 보여드립니다. 그들은 우리들의 생각보다 재미있고 특별한 동시에 우리와 비슷한 사람들이라는걸 깨달을 수 있어요.

“Street Peeps” are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, “Who are you and what do you do?” Perhaps it’s their fashion; perhaps it’s their attitude; often, it’s just a feeling that there’s something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do. And what we keep realizing that you should never judge a book by its cover. Most importantly, we realize that perfect strangers are often much more interesting that you might think, but are very much like you and me.

저도 예전에는 모르는 사람에게 말을 거는게 너무 무서웠어요. 원래 성격이 소심하고 좀 싸이코같은 A형이라 혼자만의 세계에 갇혀 살았죠. 그래서 좀 더 성격을 바꿔보려고 노력중이예요. 마음을 열고, 상대방을 믿어주면서 말을 걸어보면 사실 대부분 친절하게 대해줘요. 길거리에서 fms와 사진을 찍다가 눈에 띄는 교복입은 학생들이 있어서 사진을 찍었죠.

제가 학생이었다면 아마도 너무 모범생이었기 때문에 아무도 사진을 찍자고 하지는 않았겠지만 아마 너무 무서워서 울었을거예요. (그정도로 소심했어요) 요즘은 교복 밑에 티셔츠 입는게 유행인가봐요. 저 때만 해도 이런건 상상도 못했죠. 뭔가 순진해 보이면서도 도발적이기도 한 이 작은 숙녀들을 거리에서 봤을 때 사진에 담고 싶다는 생각이 들었어요. 학생들이라 그런지 부담없이 귀여운 자세로 응해줘서 편했어요. 친구들끼리라 더 자유롭고 뭔가 희망에 찬 분위기 속에서 사진을 찍을 수 있었죠. 쿨한 작은 아가씨들에게 정말 고마웠어요.

As marketers everywhere know, the cool kids know what’s cool. And in Korea, schoolkids are big spenders in certain ways, and on certain things, because they have to work within constrictions (uniforms, school rules, somewhat strict social norms surrounding age), yet they make their choices en masse. Trends and looks travel through schools here in the same they do in other countries, but there is much more uniformity (excuse the unintentional pun). So when these kids make a choice, it tends to be of epic proportions. So don’t let the school uniforms fool you. These kids buy certain bags, certain shoes (Converses!), certain phones, etc. They have limited avenues for expression, so they make the most of them. Here’s a no brainer: Korean girls started wearing Converses looong before the older kids in their 20’s started doing it.

쿨한 학생들만 알 수 있는 특별한 아이템이 있죠. 핸드폰, 가방, 컨버스 운동화 등등… 저도 중학교 시절에 약간 도발해서 부모님께 거짓말을 하고 그때 당시 학생들 사이에 명품으로 통했던 intercrew티셔츠를 샀다가 들통이 나자 그 다음날 학교 못 갈 뻔 한 적이 있어요. 그 이후로 더욱 더 모범생 모드로 돌입했지요. 제 주위에 항상 브랜드 아이템에 대해서 노래를 부르던 친구가 있었는데 그 친구 덕분에 학원비로 옷사고 신발사고, 엄마께 떼쓰던 기억이 나네요. 사실 지금은 좀 후회도 돼요. 그 때 공부 열심히 했으면… 하고요. 부모님께 미안하기도 하고요.

As for personality – Korean high school kids have a lot, especially high school girls. If there’s one group of people in the world I’d never want to have to fight several hundred of, it’s Korean schoolgirls. I have a feeling that if it were a death match between 1,000 Tartans and 1,000 Korean girl high school seniors with the entrance exam or jobs on their mind – the only people left standing would be busy checking their hair in vanity mirrors and freshening up with the help of little, hidden makeup compacts.

The three girls in this set struck me because of their badass attitude. They seem like good kids, but are definitely still cool – they’re not the geeks or nerds (like I was!). They’re not breaking all that many rules, and are nothing in comparison with some high school kids today, whose choice of overly-small tops, altered skirts (in keeping with the miniskirt trend in vogue these days), and high-as-rules-allow heels definitely blur the line between real schoolgirls’ regulation school wear and some sexy parody of what schoolgirls wear.

제가 학교 다닐 때는 너무 순진해서 작은 몸집에 비해 너무 큰 치마를 접어입기는 했어도 수선 맏기거나 하는 것은 생각하지도 못했어요. 예전에는 치마 수선하는 학생들 보면 날라리라고 생각했었는데 요즘은 조금 다른 생각이 들어요. 이런 식으로 시간을 내서 비록 교복이지만 외모에 신경을 쓴다는 걸 보면 앞으로 패션 쪽으로 나가면 성공할 것 같은 생각이 들어요. 학교에서도 이런 학생들을 다그치기만 하지 말고 탈렌트를 발전시키도록 도와주면 좋겠어요.

아참, 그러고 보니 제가 고등학교 다닐 때 엄청 추운 날에 핑크색 목도리를 하고 등교한 적이 있어요. 이 날 학생주임 선생님(남자)은 밍크코트를 입고 계셨죠. 학생주임 선생님은 저의 핑크색 목도리를 보더니 제 머리를 손바닥으로 후려치셨어요. 어찌나 기분이 상하던지.. 그 길로 학교 자퇴하고 유학준비했답니다. ㅋㅋ

Not regulation, but close enough, and much better, frankly!
