우리 홍대에 갔는데 진짜 특이한 '홍대스러운' 패션 리더들 찾고 있었어요. 몇 명 찍었는데 갑자기 무슨 런웨이에 내려오는 패션모델처럼 빤짝빤짝 눈에 띈 여자가 지내가고 있는 게예요. 띄어서 말을 걸으러 갔는데 그리고 가지고 왔던 명함들이 다 떨어졌는데도 말을 걸었더니 우리를 바라보고, "아. 사진요? 네, 찍어요!" 재밌게 장난으로 먼저 대답하신 거예요, 우리 묻기 전에. 센스 좀 많이 있는 사람이 같아요.

We were walking through Hongdae looking for something a bit different when we saw a woman clearing a path through the crowds, turning every head that she passed. She was risqué as all heck, but she seemed to be enjoying the attention immensely. When we went to stop her and ask her for a picture, we had barely finished the "Excuse me…" before she had looked us up and down, saw the equipment we had, and interrupted our pitch with, "Oh, you want to take pictures. Go ahead." She was already two steps ahead of us.

근데 얘기해보니까 우리 킬러핑크 친구가 패션디자이너이 거예요! 요새 그만뒀는데 자기 옷 브랜드를 준비하고 있대요. 역시! 물론 자기 옷도 만드는데 그 날은 본인이 좋아하시는 일본 수입품 옷 웹사이트(lizlisaray.com)의 미니드레스를 입고 있었던 거예요. 분명히 핫핑크를 좋아하시는 분이죠.

It turns out that Killer Pink is a fashion designer who has just quit her job and is getting ready to start her own clothing label, and just happens to love hot pink, as you can see. She makes her own clothes, although what you see here is both off the rack and what she got from a Japanese import site lizlisaray.com. Smokin' stuff on that site!

근데 신기한 건 그녀의 모든 핑크 액세서리들이 다 똑같은 쌕감 - 똑같은 핫핑크이란 말이야. 같이 세트으로 나온 것같은데 아니래요. 하도 핫핑크 액세서리들이 많아서 정확하게 색깔 딱 어울리는 아이템들이 많다고 그랬어요. 대단하시네, 언니! ㅋㅋ

What fascinated us was the fact that her items, which she said she bought all separately, was so well matched. Even hot pink has different shades, but her accessories look like they were made for each other.

뭐라고해도…자기 스타일아니라고 해도 (난 개인적으로 너무 좋아하는데!) 인정해야 하는게 아주 오리지널한 여성이잖아요. 많은 다른 여자들이 - 한국이든 미국이든 - 그런 베이비돌 드레스를 입을 자신이 없는 사람들이 얼마나 많이 있겠는가? 아무리 몸짱이라도? 서울에서는 진짜 인터레스팅 패션 리더들이 아주 많아졌네요…10년전보다…진짜 대단해!

Truly pink from head to toe. And that babydoll dress – not many women in Korea (or anywhere) have the massive self-confidence required to walk past one's doorstep in that. There's no hiding anything with in that dress – and be careful sitting down; you might be breaking the law in some American states!

사실, 우리 이 스트리트 패션 사진들이 서울에서 처음으로 해봤을 때 찍은 거니까 그리고 이 날은 내가 첫 찍은 사진이라서 실수했어요. 고백하면, ISO가 너무 높이 되어 있었고 (전날 처녘에 촬영하느라) 그리고 밝은 배경 앞에 안찍어야 했는데…휴. 그래서 그 스트리트 모델들한테 사과해야 되겠어요. 생각만큼 사진들이 잘 안나오니까 미안하고 내 탓이라고요. 너무 멋지게 옷을 입고 있었는데…아쉬워라.

These were some of the first street portraits we took, and I have something to confess: I messed up the sensitivity settings – I had it set to 1600 (from shooting the previous night) and shouldn't have shot against such a bright background. To the very fashionable couple, I have to say, "I'm sorry." I didn't get as good as pictures of you as I wanted, which was totally my fault. But we liked your look too much to leave it out. So, we apologize for the grainy look.

근데 이젠 패션 얘기부터 시작하면 그 언니는 역시 섹시한 쿨하시고 그 미니멀이즘적인 하얀 티셔츠와 하얀 가방, 아주 스키니한 스키니진 룩 - 눈에 띄는 투명한 "유리슬리퍼"같은 뮬한테 너무 퍼펙트한 배경이네요. 그리고 제임즈딘이랑 비슷한 느낌이 나게 하는 그 캐주얼한 쿨 남자분…아주 나이스이다! 그냥 우연히 입은 것처럼 입고 다니는 초록/금색 티셔츠와 진…골드 글씨와 진의 구멍에서 보일 수 있는 골드 실, 그리고 신발에 골드 앞코…미묘한 코디 잘하신 것같아요. 너무 쿨이죠?

As for the look itself, I'll just say that the young lady in the shot is definitely a sexy sort of cool, with her plain white top, super-skinny jeans, and sultry glass slippers; her boyfriend has a casual and cool confidence that says James Dean to me, and his seemingly accidental (but not!) matching, with the green-and-gold money tee, matching gold thread visible through the rips in the jeans, and the gold tips on his sneakers is pretty darn cool.

그리고 가방 말이야. 또 미니멀이즘을 표현하는 깨끗해보이는 그 하얀 가방! 옷이 미니말식으로 하셨으니까 그 신발이 더 크게 주인공이 되는 거죠 - 다음에 페디큐어 하면 어떻실까요? 너무 딱 이쁠 것같아서…벌써 이쁘신데…

And I love the bag! And the shoes! With the minimalist clothes, they add just the right touch of flair – perhaps a pedicure would complete the look?

마지막 멘트으로 제임즈딘한테 뭐랄까? 눈빛을 보면 그의 좋용한 자신감을 느낄 수 있으니까 여기서 많이 쓸 필요 없겠네요 - 그냥 오스틴파워의 "모조"이란 것 많이 있다고…역시 그 눈빛 때문에 그 여자친구가 넘어갔었젰죠? ㅋㅋㅋ 일단 이 멋쟁이 커플한테 감사합니다!

And as for James Dean here, what can one say? That confident look says it all – and is the one that surely won over his young lady in the first place. His mojo was definitely working! Thanks to this fashionable couple for agreeing to pose for us!

미스 오렌지를 동대문의 두타 근처에 처음 봤는데 옷보다 너무 친절해보여서 말하기 쉬웠어요. 사진을 찍어도 되냐고 물어봤던이 즐겁게 해주셨어요. 처음에 어색했지만 열심히 멋진 포즈를 하도록 노력해주신 것같았어요. 그리고 그녀는 대표적인 신세대 여성인 것같았어요. 썬탠도하니까 분명히 햇빛을 피하면서 다닌 것아니고 그리고 팔, 가슴, 다리를 자랑스럽게 노출한 것같았어요. 뭐, 자랑할 만하니까 그렇죠. 이뻐서. 이쁜 걸 알면 어때? ㅋㅋㅋ 웬지 너무 편해서 다른 나라 분 같았더라고요. 왜냐하면 한국에서 길거리에서 누구한테 말을 걸으면 대게 답답할 때 많으니까. 미스 오렌지랑 그런 느낌이 하나도 없었네요.

We spied Little Miss Orange in Dongdaemun, one of the major fashion districts in Seoul, where the tastes aren't designer, but are much more affordable, and very customizable. You can hear more about Dongdaemun by virtually exploring it with us in our audio tour of the area's most popular mall outlets – Doota – but the quick explanation is that clothes are cheap, trendy, and somewhat flashy here. Many in their twenties and thirties shop here, and the only analogy I could give is that of a big shopping mall in Jersey, versus the Beverly Hills boutique level of Apkujeong, or the Macy's/Niemann Marcus level of Myeongdong.

미스 오렌지의 룩은 아주 시원했어요. 머리, 옷, 페디큐어, 피부색깔까지 - 컬러 코디 잘하신 거예요. 자기 이름으로 나온 섹스앤드더씨티 때문에 인기 많아졌던 목거리도 잘 선택하셨고 인기 좋은 핫팬츠도 샌들의 레이스랑 딱 어울렸어요. 아무리 하이힐인데도 편한 캐주얼 룩을 잘 만들었네요.

Miss Orange was cool, summery and casual, but typical of some of the more risqué youth in that she was dressed to reveal, and didn't apologize for it. Rather than the traditional aversion to the sun that many older Korean women felt – as part of achieving the ideal of the white, untanned skin of the ancient, privileged yangban class – Miss Orange's skin was tanned and bronzed, and surely a conscious part of her overall color scheme of orange tones for the hair and even lipstick.

미스 오렌지 - 너무 멋지시당! 그리고 모델처럼 포즈를 잘 만들어주시니까 진짜 고마웠어요. (특히 그 경비 아저씨가 우릴 괴롭혔을 때 안 가버리니까 고마웠어요 - 그리고 백화점빌딩 아저씨! 법 좀 배우세요! 그 빌딩의 땅에서만 "사진 찍으면 안된다"고 할 수 있잖아요. 동대문은 다 니 빌딩의 땅아니잖아요!) ㅋㅋㅋ 휴. 하야튼, 미스 오렌지 - 끝까지 친절하게 해주셨으니까 대단히 감사합니다!

As you can see in the various shots, neon colors for mani/pedicure are in, as is the vanity name necklace popularized in Korea by you-know-who on Sex and the City. Hot pants were definitely in all summer, and Miss Orange was certainly not one to fall behind that trend. The lace frills on the shoes was a nice counterpoint to the ripped bottoms of the jeans hot pants; and the shoes themselves are very nearly casual in a country in which it is still de rigueur to put on makeup and sport heels to go to the grocery store. Her heels, from the looks of them, as well as her quick and confident stride (we had to jog to catch up with her) were certainly made for walking.

You just looked fabulous, girl! Hope to see you again 'round the streets of Seoul!

동대문에서 막 다니면서 멋쟁이들 많이 만났지. 근데 이 레게 스타일 커플은 진짜 개성이 있고 아주 unique한 거같았어요. 서울에서 가끔씩 어떤 특별한 문화에 빠져있는 스타일 보일 수 있는데 - 랩, 펑크, J-pop - 근데 많은 그런 사람들이 좀 어슬프게…너무 일부러 따라하려고 하는 것있잖아요.

근데 이 커플은 너무 자연스럽고 대게 쿨한 것같았어요. 그래서 말을 시켰던이 너무 어색함 없이 촬영을 할 수 있었죠.

We were walking around Dongdaemun when we spotted the coolest reggae couple walking our way. You see a lot of young folks here dressed like a sub-culture groupie – rap, punk, or even J-pop – but it often looks superficial or even forced when it's worn by the wrong person, or too self-consciously. This couple didn't have that problem, and seemed as natural reggae devoteés as in any other place.

그리고 머리. 레게 스타일에서 제일 중요한 거죠 - 드레드럭. 어떻게 어디서 머리를 했는지 물어봤던이 그 남자분이 '내가 직접 했다'고 설명해주셨거든요. 와우. 대단한 일이지. 나같은 경우는 내 머리를 감는 건 귀찮은데. ㅋㅋ 진짜 대단하지오!

And that hair! When I asked who did the extensions, the guy replied that he had done it himself. Now, that's dedication.

그리고 밋진 디자인이 있는 티셔츠… A t-shirt with a unique design…

마지막으로, 가방과 생들…이 경우엔 서로 매층아니고 그 에스닉깃 가방과 상체, 청/흰색 샌들과 하얀 진스…그렇게 잘 어울려네요. 코디 캡!

Gotta check the bag and shoes…they don't match each other, but rather the somewhat "ethnic" purse in tandem with her upper body, and the blue/white sandals with the white jeans, obviously. Looking good!

그냥 유행만 따라하는 것아니라 진짜 자기 개성대로 이 '레게 스타일'을 만들었지. 물론 순한 레게 스타일아니니까 한국의 일반 멋과 레게 멋과 섞인 거예요. 진짜. 멋을 너무 잘하셨네요!

They don't seem to be just following a trend, but are also mixing in this reggae look with items and fashion from Korea; and they've done a great job at making it natural and fabulous. It just really works, don't you think?

신촌의 루비튜스데이에서 먹다가 이 언니가 들어오시면서 눈에 확 띈 거예요. 스타일 너무 낯선 거도아니고 무슨 압구정동에 길거리에서 만날 구 있는 외국패션 유행을 타는 애도아니고 한국에서 찾을 수 있는 한국식 패션 아이템을 유난히 코디 너무 잘해서 시잔을 찍은 거예요. 한국에 어디서나 보일 수 있는 요소들 - 레오파드 프리트 가방, 구두, 시계 - 그렇지만 이 언니는 자기 나름대로 새로운 느낌이 나는 룩을 만든 거예요.

We spied an amazing young lady walking into a Ruby Tuesday's in Shinchon and decided that she was simply too fabulous to let go by without requesting an audience with Her Fabulousness. She was worthy of note not because she was an Apkujeong area princess sporting something fresh and funky from overseas, but because she was remixing and rocking elements of Korean fashion trends and items in her own creative and sexy way.

머리끝에서 발가락까지 핑크와 라벤다색깔들이 잘 어울리고 복잡하고 촌스럽게 나올 수 있는 레오파드 프린트는 액세소리로만 나오고 옷은 단순하게 입으니까 딱 좋은 것같아요. 원래 레오파드나 동물 프린트 옷이 쉽게 촌스러워보일 수 있으니까 조심해야 한다고 생각하거든요. 이 언니는 적당하게 액세서리를 잘 쓰신 거예요.

From head to toe, the pink and lavender, as well as the several leopard print items, really worked out well. It's hard to wear animal prints – especially three items – and have it come off well. I think the trick here is using the animal prints as accessories only, and keeping the clothes themselves short and simple.

개인적으로 다양색깔 페디큐어 안좋아하지만 나름대로 재밌는 것같아요. 웬지 이 언니는 패션퀸이라서…뭐라고 하기 좀 어렵죠? ㅋㅋ 대단하다, 언니!

Although I don't personally go for the multi-colored pedicure look, this girl seems to have what it takes to pull it off; for her, it just seems like another fabulous flourish that somehow seems to work. You go, girl!

이번에 우리 압구정에 갔는데 길거리에서 이 젊은 멋쟁이 3명을 만나게 됐고 너무 쿨, 캐주얼 스트리트 패션을 대표한 거예요. 윈쪽부터는 대표적인 정장캐쥬얼, 평범캐주얼, 스포티캐쥬얼의 느낌을 딱 잡은 것같아요.

We traveled this time to Apkujeong, where we bumped into three freshly-dressed young ladies who seemed to embody cool, casual street fashion. I guess one could say, looking from left to right, that they were dress, relaxed, and sporty casual.

그리고 여기는 몇가지 다른 소품컷…And here are a few more detail shots of some parts you might not have caught so well…

그리고 제일 재밌는 건 신발들도 분위기 ㄸK라서 코디 잘한 거예요. 특히 오른쪽의 아디다스식 슬리퍼를 좋아했다!

And their interesting shoes, which embodied the same dress, everyday, and sporty casual styles well. The Adidas (real, or no?) slippers are definitely different, and kinda rocked!

그리고 마지막으로 그냐 예쁜 얼짱 사진을 올린 거예요. 기쁠 것같아서요. ㅋㅋ 물어보니까 이 멋쟁이 언니들이 다 대학교 1학년이고 다 모델링 전공을 하고 있대요. 역시, 우리 눈이 정확한 것같네. 키는 다 174cm부터 177까지이고 성격도 아주 활발하네!

And finally, a vanity shot of our three young models, who, when asked a bit about who they are and what they did, told us were first-years in college and majoring in modeling. Well, they had the height (from 174-177 cm) and the chutzpah to do well, we think.

오늘 명동에서 벤치마킹 촬영하고 있는데 우연히 옆에 분명히 패션 좔영하는 2명을 봤어요. 한 언니는 큰 카메라로 찍고 있었고 뭘하는 사람들이 같아서 말을 시켰죠. 얘기해보니까 자기 패션 사이트 한대요. 그리고 밑에 언니가 너무 이쁘게 나오는 모델사진들이 많이 있더라고요 - www.2sac2.com - 자기 쇼핑몰을 위해 사진을 찍고 있었네요. 개인사업을 하시는 분들을 똑같이 볼 수 있으니까 아주 반가웠고 아무래도 대게 잘하시는 것같았어요. 대단해요, 언니들! 구드럭!

We were walking around Myeongdong looking to do some fashion street shots when we spied a couple women doing some modeling and shooting, at which point we stopped to ask them if they were somehow involved in fashion. Turns out they were shooting for their own fashion mall – www.2sac2.com – so it was no problem for us to catch a shot ourselves.

It was nice to see some fellow entrepreneurs out working fashion on the streets of Seoul. Looks like they're doing a great job, and we wish them lots of luck!
