이 “길거리에서” (”On the Streets”)이란 컬럼은 서울의 특별한 동네, 공간, 장소를 자세히 보는 거예요. 서울사람이라도 새로운 눈으로 한국의 패션과 각각의 거리마다의 고유의 느낌을 느낄 수 있게요.

The “On the Streets” column takes a close look at particular spaces and places in Seoul. It could be a neighborhood, an area, or a small store. But whatever and wherever it is, it will surely be a place that will tell you more about the fashion and feeling of Korean life.

The Shinchon Changcheon Children’s Park, known to most people simply as Shinchon Park, is an oasis of youthful energy, sexuality, and even rebellion. It is also just known as a place to rest while waiting for a friend in the busy Shinchon area, but it is also known to be a place where young middle and high school-aged kids gather in dark corners to drink, and where couples find an open hideout.

신촌 어린이 공원(주로 신촌 공원이라고 알려져있지요)은 젊은 에너지와 섹슈얼리티 심지어 반항끼마저도 느낄 수 있는 오아시스예요. 이곳은 복잡하고 바쁜 신촌에서 만남의 장소로도 알려져 있지만, 한편으로는 중고생들이 어두운 구석에서 술을 마시기도 하고 커플들이 몸을 숨길수 있는 장소를 찾는 곳이기도 하지요.

In short, it’s a park with all kinds of people, and that space defines a zone of relative freedom. You can see many young women in groups smoking there as well, along with couples making out, or people kicking back with beers bought from a nearby convenience store. For some reason, this is the one place where ajussis – older Korean men – won’t be able to scold kids for being “punks”, women for smoking in public (traditionally, women in Korea were not supposed to smoke outside or in public places), or tell young couples to lay off one another. Here, the ajussis in their business suits and conservative ties are the outsiders.

간단히 말하자면, 이 공원에는 온갖 종류의 사람들이 다 모이는 곳이고, 어느 정도 자유로운 곳이라고 정의할 수 있는 공간이예요. 젊은 아가씨들이 그룹으로 모여서 담배 피는 것도 볼 수 있고, 연인들이 키스를 하거나, 주변 편의점에서 사온 맥주를 마시면서 휴식을 취하는 사람들도 쉽게 볼 수 있어요. 이곳에서만은 아저씨들도 어린 학생들이 날나리 짓이라고 한다고 혹은 공공장소에서 여자들이 담배 피우는 것이나 어린 커플들이 다정하게 있다고 해서 잔소리하지 않아요. (한국에서는 오랫동안 여자들이 공공장소나 밖에서 담배피우는 것이 거의 금기에 가까웠어요) 오히려 양복입고 넥타이 맨 아저씨들은 이곳에서 아웃사이더라고 할 수 있어요.

Typical of the people enjoying the park, especially late on a weeknight, are groups of young women chatting, perhaps smoking, perhaps even sharing a can or three of beer. As an American, this is one of the things I like most about this part, since back home “open bottle laws” can get you fined or even arrested for having an open bottle of alcohol in a public place, especially a park. Still think America is “liberal”? Being able to relax with a can of cold beer in a park right out in the open is truly a luxury for me.

대개 이 공원을 자주 찾은 사람들, 특히 평일 늦게 자주 오는 사람 중에는 젊은 아가씨들이 얘기하는 걸 많이 볼 수가 있는데 가끔은 담배를 피우거나 또 가끔은 맥주 서너캔을 나눠마시기도 해요. 미국 사람로서 가장 마음에 드는 것은 미국에서 “open bottle laws”가 생긴 이후, 공공장소 특히 공원에서 술을 마실 경우에는 벌금을 내거나 체포될 수도 있어요. 아직도 미국이 ‘자유롭게’ 느껴지나요? 공원에서 차가운 맥주를 마시면서 여유를 느낄 수 있다는 게 제게는 정말 특별하게 느껴지는군요.

And for the young, single women whom you can see here – often as young as high school – being young, dressing how you want, all while talking freely and loudly, and perhaps even smoking and drinking – is a luxury in Korean society as well, since there are so many little rules of behavior for women here.

이 공원에서는 고등학생들로 보이는 아가씨들도 흔하게 볼 수 있는데 사실 젊다는 것은 입고 싶은대로 옷 입고, 마음껏 자유롭게 큰 소리로 떠들고 여기에 아마도 술마시고 담배피는 것까지… 여자들에게 지켜야 할 규칙이 너무 많은 한국 사회에서 여기는 여자들 특히 어린 학생들이나 아가씨들에게도 특별한 곳입니다.

This kind of social freedom is true for couples as well, which is the other most common type of person found in Shinchon Park, and you can see many couples simply relaxing and taking a moment to be enjoy each other without worrying about being embarrassed, or too many people watching them.

사회적은 자유로움을 느낄 수 있는 사람들중에는 커플들도 포함됩니다. 커플들은 신촌 공원에서 가장 흔하게 볼 수 있는 타입입니다. 많은 커플들이 이곳에서 쉬기도 하고, 다른 사람들의 시선을 피해 자연스럽게 스킵쉽을 즐기기도 합니다.

And one thing that felt really special about Shinchon Park was just how open people seemed to be to letting the camera and our crew in on their most natural moments. For this, we’d like to say thanks to all of our impromptu models!

알어알어. 이런 패션은 오트쿠튀르아닌 걸 알아요. 그리고 원래 그런 한국스러운 얌전하고 너무 여성스러운 룩을 안좋아했어요. 근데 한국에서 살면서 좀 익숙해진 것같고 웬지 내가 갖고 있었던 앤티얌전함을 좀 잃어버린 것같네요.

그래서 이 연두색 원피스를 봤을 때 웬지 맘에 든 거예요. 알어알어! 촌스럽다고 생각할 사람들이 많이 있을 걸. 그래도 나름대로 레트로쿨인 것같아요. 물론 그 하늘색 가방 빼고. ㅋㅋ

I know that this isn’t the height of fashion, but why do I like this dress? I know I shouldn’t, but I’ve gotten used to the cutesy, 60’s look in Korea, and I like the idea of outfits in general. The bag kinda kills it, though – she was already so green and white – why’d not continue the theme and complete the look?

But this is definitely a Korean look, and one that has its own kind of appeal and charm, once you get used to it and understand the personality that seems to go with it. I’ve been here too long, and am dedicated too much to reporting all the trends I can glean from the street to deny this style’s holding power and presence on the street.

But does anyone think they know why she chose the blue-and-white bag? Any thoughts out there?

신촌에서 스카우팅하다가 택시 타려고 했는데 나가면서 이 여자의 원피스가 눈에 띈 거예요. 화련하고 예쁘고 좀 에스닉한 느낌이 나면서도. 맘에 들었어요. 가방, 팔찌, 그리고 샌들…진짜 내추럴한 분위기. 특이 팔찌를 보니까 그 것도 에스닉한 아이템이죠.

We were on our way out of Shinchon after doing some shooting when this young woman’s dress caught our eye, with its bright colors and somewhat ethnic style. We just liked it. When you factor in the bag, bracelets, and the sandals, it adds up to a natural feeling; especially the bracelets, since they are also pretty “ethnic” in design.

한국에서는 남자들이 조금 캐주얼한 편인데 아무리 해도 여자들은 좀더 “드레스 업”하죠. 남자는 쿨한 캐주얼 분위기인데 여자는 대게 조금 더 화려하게, 눈에 띄게 옷을 입은 거예요. 하여튼 - 멋진 커플이죠?

In Korea, men tend to be a little more dressed down than women, who generally are dressed to impress wherever they go. The boyfriend in this picture is a casual kind of cool, whereas the girlfriend in this pair has definitely exerted more effort to define a “look” and a complete outfit. In any case, they look good together!

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don’t choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they’ve managed to create their own unique style that one can’t simply pass by without wanting to remember.

신촌의 루비튜스데이에서 먹다가 이 언니가 들어오시면서 눈에 확 띈 거예요. 스타일 너무 낯선 거도아니고 무슨 압구정동에 길거리에서 만날 구 있는 외국패션 유행을 타는 애도아니고 한국에서 찾을 수 있는 한국식 패션 아이템을 유난히 코디 너무 잘해서 시잔을 찍은 거예요. 한국에 어디서나 보일 수 있는 요소들 - 레오파드 프리트 가방, 구두, 시계 - 그렇지만 이 언니는 자기 나름대로 새로운 느낌이 나는 룩을 만든 거예요.

We spied an amazing young lady walking into a Ruby Tuesday’s in Shinchon and decided that she was simply too fabulous to let go by without requesting an audience with Her Fabulousness. She was worthy of note not because she was an Apkujeong area princess sporting something fresh and funky from overseas, but because she was remixing and rocking elements of Korean fashion trends and items in her own creative and sexy way.

머리끝에서 발가락까지 핑크와 라벤다색깔들이 잘 어울리고 복잡하고 촌스럽게 나올 수 있는 레오파드 프린트는 액세소리로만 나오고 옷은 단순하게 입으니까 딱 좋은 것같아요. 원래 레오파드나 동물 프린트 옷이 쉽게 촌스러워보일 수 있으니까 조심해야 한다고 생각하거든요. 이 언니는 적당하게 액세서리를 잘 쓰신 거예요.

From head to toe, the pink and lavender, as well as the several leopard print items, really worked out well. It’s hard to wear animal prints – especially three items – and have it come off well. I think the trick here is using the animal prints as accessories only, and keeping the clothes themselves short and simple.

개인적으로 다양색깔 페디큐어 안좋아하지만 나름대로 재밌는 것같아요. 웬지 이 언니는 패션퀸이라서…뭐라고 하기 좀 어렵죠? ㅋㅋ 대단하다, 언니!

Although I don’t personally go for the multi-colored pedicure look, this girl seems to have what it takes to pull it off; for her, it just seems like another fabulous flourish that somehow seems to work. You go, girl!
