SEOUL Magazine has published our first print column, but since it is limited to the medium of expensive paper, they couldn’t, of course, publish them large, or very many of them. Here’s the original article:

Picture 3-7

Sometimes, you have to do a double-take to catch things. So we’ve decided to add in some alternate and additional shots that couldn’t be in the print shoot. Most of this was shot in Myeongdong and Shinchon, and we’ll start with the former.

Love the hair – this shorter cut, with either straight bangs, or teased, or purposely messy with chopped locks of different lengths. You’ll see more of these kinds of cuts on people below.

Street Peeps: Shoe Designer

Nov 29, 2007 Author: FMS | Filed under: Shinchon, Street Peeps

“Street Peeps” are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, “Who are you and what do you do?” Perhaps it’s their fashion; perhaps it’s their attitude; often, it’s just a feeling that there’s something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do, and we bring them to you.

On the way to leave a night of shooting in Shinchon, I spied a woman running by with the coolest dress and flyest bag I’ve seen in a long time. And she also just seemed well put-together. I was with another writer-hopeful for the site, and she was wondering why I had gone sprinting after someone whom I had barely even gotten a good look at; but I trusted my instincts and absolutely needed to do a street-stop with her and at least ask about taking a picture. As I always say, what’s the worst that can happen? She say “no”? She was quite friendly and flattered that we had asked. When we asked her what she did, she said that she was a shoe designer. Now, ain’t THAT just a coincidence! Well, that explained her refined sense of taste, ahem, and my astute ability to pick them out of a crowd.

IMG_4427 copyIMG_4424 copy

We loved her dress (which I regret not asking her to pull back the coat to show more of), her bag (not just because it’s Prada, but because it’s a hot bag!), as well as her cute coat and shoes. It all just went came together into a real classy package, with an interestingly designed dress as a centerpiece.

OK, girls. Look. I have something to say, but…umm…how shall I put this?

It’s about the Uggs. They’re ugly. That’s why they’re called “Uggs.” They’ve always been ugly, and they still are. It’s not just that they’re years out of date – they should have never been made in the first place. So please. Let them die. Don’t cling to the past. The ugly past. Uggs aren’t quite as bad as Crocs, but…

Img 6695 CopyImg 6699 Copy

So let’s try to help their poor Uggs owners, who haven’t seem to have gotten the memo. If you see a pair of these things coming, you can utter the following words in the hope of holding them back. Cross yourself and step slowly backwards as you chant:

Back to Hell, go you! The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!

Whew. I feel better. Even though the person wearing the Uggs will probably yell “What the…?!” don’t worry. If you have any water with you, sprinkling it in their direction while saying the words will have a much more impressive effect. Even though she may not understand now, remember that you’re just helping out! Tell her to throw those Uggs away and go on about your business knowing you’ve done a good deed.

Lately, the camera has changed from a mere tool to capture moments on film, but as it becomes more and more a part of the daily lives of girls who are taking pictures of themselves, their friends, and their food for Cyworld pages and personal blogs, it has become a veritable fashion accessory.

And nowadays, since the digital SLR has become affordable enough that anyone with a few hundred dollars can have one – and as companies such as Canon are actively marketing them more compact and cuter for women in Asia. For example, the American “Digital Rebel XT” was marketed in Europe and many other countries as the EOS 350d, and in Japan the “Kiss Digital N.”

This is to the point that many male shooters complain about the shrinking size of low-end SLR’s – but they have to be items that are much easier to carry around all day, especially if you’re a woman who will either put it in a purse or hang it around your neck. Women have a lot more to take pictures of these days, the old point-and-shoot cameras won’t cut it anymore, and fashionable Japanese or Korean women aren’t going to carry a Lowepro™ camera bag around with them all day long. Hence, the smaller the better.

But now everyone and their kitty has one of these, so actually carrying an old film body and getting into the nostalgic romance of actually winding each shot oneself, just like in the movies – this becomes an act of retro cool. If you walk through Samcheong-dong, Hongdae, or even Shinchon on a busy weekend, you will see all kinds of older cameras now being put to “retro” use. Wow. Now, I really feel old.

“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

IMG_4251 copy

Don’t you just love it when you see a perfect pair? And when I see them, I often just want to ask, “Did you two do this on purpose, or…?” Yet, most of the time, barring the wearing of the ubiquitous “Couple T-Shirt”, the matching is usually just a coincidence.

IMG_4208 copy

I spied this couple walking into a coffee shop as I walked past, and I instantly wanted to take their picture. After talking to them, I found out that they weren’t even an official couple (yet). Their matching was perfect, but seemingly unintended. Of course, you have the silver and black, but the boy’s shoelaces and the girl’s art book make just the right little splashes of red that make for an interesting, common yet complementary visual element.

IMG_4272 copy

So I like the unimportant details, the decisive yet fleeting moments, the small details – especially when they are in motion. I’m happy to be able to capture all these things with my camera these days, and am always continue to practice my skills. Street fashion photography isn’t as easy as it looks – but the challenge is one of the reasons I like it so much.
