The “Korean Street Fashion” column takes a look at the broad variety of actual fashions on the Korean street, from the most quirky and colorful of looks to those that are typical and everyday. We take an anthropological approach to the real looks we see on the street and try to record Korean fashion in all its diversity, and not just in terms of our own ideas of what it “should” be.
We took a trip out to Itaewon a couple weekends ago, just when things were starting to warm up and people were starting to come out of their shells — and thick clothes. Itaewon, being a haven for the parts of Korean society at the fringes — foreigners, gays, and other kinds of Other — always has interesting folks to see. And on the weekend, the street’s always a party!
But Itaewon nights are not just for the edgy and risqué, but for the more reserved as well. We ran into this young lady, who leans more on the more reserved and demure side of Korean everyday fashion. For me, it’s all about ribbons, peachy colors, and the summer minidress. I wish she hadn’t been in such a rush and had more time to photograph.
Last but not least, we ran into a couple of colorful girls, who were quite happy to pose before going off to a night of clubbing.
“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture real Korean fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the streets of Seoul.
Yesterday, Arirang TV was interviewing me about my blogging and wanted to get a shot of me in action in the streets. Since I’m not an actor, I decided that rather than cheesily faking like I was taking pictures, perhaps it would be best to simply grab someone like I normally do and snap away? And how lucky I was to spy this young lady with this really interesting dress that looks almost like a shirt, but with frills at the bottom.
She was also wearing the “gladiator”-style sandals that were ever so popular this summer. I can hear the strains of the music now…
Here are some more Gladiator-style sandals. These and similar Roman-style sandals were quite popular this summer.
Now, here are some really smoking Gladiator-style heels, which mixes the popular t-strap, leather style, and romanesque straps — she’s ready for fashion battle.
So, our friend’s sandals are pretty cute, no? They go well with a similarly cute pair of feet. You wanna have all your pedicure appointments set up for the Korean summers. Unless you REALLY want your feet to resemble those of a gladiator!
Cute!
I also really dug her little satchel purse and the plaid.
The look reminds me of this, from a previous post. Similar concept, huh?
I don’t know why I keep seeing this pop up in my pictures again and again.
Wow. In any case, we’d like to thank our inpromptu model for sticking it out to the end, like a good sport and true gladiator! To her, goes “Strength and honor!”

FeetManSeoul still regularly appears in the Expat Living section of the Korea Herald, where we did a piece not too long ago on the changing attitudes towards tattoos in Korea, and visited a tattoo artist in his Itaewon studio, after having bumped into him on the streets of Myeongdong.
If one travels the back streets of Itaewon all the way up to it highest point, there will be the a large mosque that is as beautiful as it is very unusual. Here, there is a feeling of solitude and serenity in being so singularly isolated and unusual; this is also true for the many foreigners, Muslims, gays, prostitutes, and American GI’s who seem to find a sort of common ground in existing on the margins of mainstream Korean society. They come together in the fascinating mix that gives Itaewon its spicy and special flavor, quite without the “danger” with which many Koreans view the place. One can’t say that Itaewon is worse or any more dangerous than a group of drunk, belligerent salarymen staggering around Shinchon, or a few wannabe-thugs in Yeongdeungpo looking for a point as well as a reason to pick a fight. Such assumptions are just due to harboring simple prejudices. So it goes with Korean society’s attitude towards tattoos, which traditionally were only sported by yakuza-style gangsters and other “lowlifes.”
We bumped into this young couple after shooting in Myeongdong last winter, and after talking with them a bit, found out they had their own tattoo studio.
The interesting thing is that attitudes towards tattoos are changing nowadays, having become trendy in the way they have been for awhile in the West, yet still have yet to shake off many of their negative associations of existing among those living along the dark and dirty underbelly of Korean society. But they are undeniably beautiful when done well, and should truly be judged as works of art unto themselves and very much a personal choice.
After having agreed to do a piece for the Korea Herald, we contacted the tattoo artist, Kang Ji-min, and visited him in his studio.
Most people with negative biases against tattooing would be surprised at how clean and professional everything is in the parlor. And they let us shoot them at work on a tattoo.
And they eagerly modeled their own tattoos for our cameras.
Ah, so you want a closer look?
And the girl’s, too! Men and women can’t be treated any differently these days…
While chatting during the shoot, we found out that the young lady was actually pregnant and starting to show, and that they were in fact a married couple! Didn’t know, did you? Hehe. Well, why not? Just because they have tattoos doesn’t mean they’re any different from you or me. Except that if she was a few months pregnant in that picture, she must have been awfully slim before!
I think this picture goes to show just how much people who look very different from you and me tend to be actually not so different from the rest of us. Here’s a couple who fell in love, is starting a family, and is making a living off of what they both love to do, in something that inspires them both. And who could ask for anything more than that?
If you would like more information about tattoo artist Kang Ji-min, he can be reached through his Cyworld page.)
While treating myself to some ice-cream in the new Cold Stone Creamery in Itaewon, I spotted this western guy with great hair! This is evidence that Korean hair styles look good on western guys, too.
Gotta love the sideburns! He got the haircut in Myeong-dong, and at first didn’t like it, but it later grew on him. Definitely better than the boring old buzz cut look I normally see on Western guys. ^^

NTfeel: haha good point about about the Tokyo Fashion Week! are they selling tickets on Gmarket or anywhere else online available for international purchase?
