우리 "길거리 스타일" 컬럼은 개인의 패션 선택만 벤치마킹 하는 것이아니라, 차라리 대표적인 길거리에서 보일 수 있는 패션 장르를 잡으려고 해요.

"Street Styles" tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

We caught up with this amazingly dressed trio coming out of a rock concert in Anam-dong, dressed in the most detailed, lovingly crafted punk styles we've seen in a long, long time. This is a whole new level of D-I-Y.

안암동의 락 콘서트 현장에서 나오신 분들 중에, 펑크로 제대로 차려 입으신 세 분들의 사진을 찍었습니다.

There's a lot of pressure to conform in Korea, so it's always refreshing to find people who can go beyond the conventional and find their own truly unique style, and these three have definitely got it! These are no punks-for-show or posers; this is everyday wear for these folks. They're the real deal.

한국에서 튀는 복장을 입는데는 엄청난 심리적 압박을 느끼게 마련입니다. 그러다보니, 대중적인 스타일을 넘어, 자신만의 스타일대로 입고다니는 사람들을 찾는다는 것은 상당히 신선한 경험이라 할 수 있지요. 바로 여기 세 분이 그렇습니다. 이 분들은 공연을 하시는 분들도 아니고, 코스튬 플레이를 하고 계신 것도 아니랍니다.

An important part of the punk aestetic is the do-it-yourself, handmade look. This beautifully hand-painted No Brain shirt really catches the eye (and carries a loving message about the importance of family on the back^^), and the cat-shaped backpack had a suprisingly homey vibe. Customization is key, and the painting, embroidery, and buttons all go towards making this outfit utterly unique.

펑크룩에 있어서 중요한 부분은 자신이 원하는대로 꾸민다는 것입니다. 이분들은 정말 '지대로' 입으셨습니다. 위의 No Brain을 그린 셔츠는 보는 이의 시선을 한 번에 잡아 끌지요. 그리고 뒤에는 가족 사랑의 중요성에 관한 메시지가 적혀있습니다. 뒤에 달린 고양이 가방은 저 분 뒤에 참 편하게 늘어져있는 느낌이었습니다. 자작품과 함께, 티셔츠의 그림, 뱃지 등의 아이템이 어우러져 매우 독특한 느낌이 듭니다.

Punk is the anti-fashion fashion, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's own special appeal. While deliberately bucking trends and going with extreme accessories designed to be transgressive and provocative (like their colored contact lenses and the many, many piercings they sport) they've still managed to be eye-catching.

펑크는 이른바 'anti-fashion'이라 하지만, 외관을 중시하지 않는다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 피어싱이나 커다란 팔찌처럼, 과하다 싶을 정도로 화려한 액세서리를 착용하거나, 기존의 트렌드와는 차별화된 모습으로 사람들의 시선을 집중시킵니다.

KISS-inspired makeup makes for a dramatic look, but that's just what these two were aiming for. Also note the rips and shreds on that t-shirt ~ sexy, cool, and definitely not what the other girls are wearing out. It just makes these two that much more fashionable to be able to reference contemporary Korean women's fashion while subverting it and using items like frilly skirts and fancy patterned stockings in different way.

KISS를 바탕으로 코디를 할 경우는 보통 드라마틱한 느낌을 주게 마련인데, 이 두 분이 의도하신 것이 바로 그것입니다. 찢어진 티셔츠와, 그 위에 그려진 그림을 보면, 웬만한 여자분들이 입으실만한 느낌은 아니죠.

Never mind the Bollocks, here's some Sex Pistols accessories. The Sex Pistols are what first caught these girls ears, but their accessories are what caught our eye. That's some heavy-duty leather, spikes, and chains!

화려한 무늬의 스타킹이나, 장식이 달린 스커트는 일반적인 여성복 패션과 대비됨으로써 두 분의 스타일을 더 돋보이게 합니다. 그리고, Sex Pistols의 이름이 들어간 액세서리도 보이네요. Sex Pistols는 이 아가씨들의 귀를 사로잡았을 것이고, 이 아가씨들의 액세서리는 보는 사람의 눈을 사로잡습니다.두꺼운 가죽에 찡과 체인도 달렸네요.

Tell me those aren't the most fabulous printed stockings you've ever seen! Really, ladies, we ALL need a pair like that. And the stockings work as a nice bridge between some heavy-duty boots and the frilly lace and ribbons of the purple leopard-print skirt. That's mixing it up with style. And it's old OLD school, harkening back the coquettishness of British punk in the 1970's. Altogether well played! Rock on!

가죽부츠와 보라색 표피스커트 사이에 스타킹을 신어주신 게 참 잘 어울리네요. 스타일을 더욱 돋보이게 만들어주는 느낌입니다. 마치 1970년대의 영국 펑크 스타일을 보는 느낌입니다. 앞으로도 멋진 모습 기대하겠습니다.

I didn't even know! The Japanese guy from the Halloween party was doing a character called "Hard Gay", who appears on Japanese TV in funny situations and even helps save people. You can see him in an example below, where he helps save a ramen shop.

진짜 몰랐어! 저 할로윈 파티에 나왔던 웃기는 일본남자가 그냥 웃기게 한 거아니라 정말 일본 텔리비전에서 나오는 인물이네요: '하드게이.' 그리고 그냥 웃기게 나오는 인물만 아니라 일반 사람을 도우주고 하는 방법도 웃기는 거예요. 예를들어 밑에는 '하드게이'가 라면가게 주인을 도와주는 모습을 보세요.

For some reason, I didn't get the feeling they were making fun of gays at all, as much as making a "fish out of water" joke, in which you take a stock character from the gay nightclub scene and make him an everyday superhero who does extremely helpful things like save people's businesses. To me, that's brilliant. And it reflects one of the few times you can see a character like this being viewed in a positive (although comedic) light. When will "Hard Gay" come to Korea? Oh, wait! He already has! On Halloween! (Many thanks to our reader for this tip!)

웬지 기분 나쁜 식으로 사회에서 어떤 소수를 웃기게 보는 것보다 참 인간적이고 금정적으로 보는 것같더라고요. 그리고 한국보다 좀더 가볍게 우머스럽게 섹스를 볼 수 있다는 생각을 들었어요. 나 원래 혼자 있을 때는 소리 내서 잘 안 웃는데 이 비디오를 봤을 때는 ㅇ너무 많이 웃었네요. 특히 꼬마들이랑 공원에서 놀고 있었을 때. '말도 안대!'라고 생각하면서도 웃겼어요. '하드 게이' 한국에 언제 올 건가? 아 - 맞다! 벌써 왔구나! 할로윈 날! (우리 독자가 이 스토리를 알려주셔서 땡쓰!)

What did you do for Halloween? And what did you go as? Although Halloween isn't really a part of Korean culture, and isn't much of a fit with it until recently, either, most people do know what it is, even if most people aren't dressing up as naughty nurses or suckling succubi. And even at the few official Halloween parties that one can find around Seoul, outside of Hongdae, Itaewon, or Apkujeong, there aren't many people who actually bother to dress up.

That's why, when a friend invited me to a Yonsei-student-sponsored Halloween party thrown by a campus organization called the Mentors' Club, which focuses on fostering friendships between Koreans and foreigners, I simply had to go. I had heard that the MTV-sponsored party at the Circle club had essentially no one dressed up, and this site wanted Halloween pictures of people in Seoul.

So my friend saddled up in her best "bad schoolgirl" best and we were off to the party, being thrown in Hongdae. And it was a good mix of people – Koreans, kyopos, and non-Koreans were all in the house, and nearly everyone was dressed up. My friend looked great in her bad girl best, mostly because she is such a "nice girl" and so far from that costume in real life.

할로윈날에 뭐했나요? 그리고 뭘로 했나요? 할로윈은 원래 한국에서는 낯선 문화이지만 사람들이 많이 알게 됐어요. 그리고 해마다 이태원, 홍대, 압구정동에서 할로위 파티 좀 하는 거예요. 그래도 할로윈 파티해도 한국인 손님들이 할로위 복장을 잘 안 입더라고요. 그래서 한국에서는 할로윈 어떻게 하는지 보야주기는 좀…그래요. 그냥 많이 안하죠.

근데 우리 친구가 연대 무슨 한국인/외국인 우정협회 뭐 그런 동아리의 멤버인데 (Mentors' Club) 진짜 할로윈 파티를 만들었어요. 그렇게 초대 받았는데 갈 수 밖에 없었죠? 물론 몇 가지 다른 공식 할로윈 파티들이 있기 있었는데 내 듣기로는 진짜 열심히 복장을 만들고 입고 간 한국사람들이 거의 없었다면서요. 많은 주로 외국인들한테 만든 개인 할로윈 파티 말고 요즘에도 서울에서는 막 재밌었던 할로윈 파티가 없었던 같아요.

그래서 친구랑 그 동아리의 홍대 클럽을 필리고 만든 파티에가기로 했어요. 그 친구는 '배드 스튜덴트"이란 컨셉으로 복장을 준비했고 (웃기는 이유는 그 친구는 좀 모범생이니까 상상도 못 한 모습였어요!) 파티로 간 거예요. 이 친구는 보통 때 얼마나 착하게 생기는지 알았으면 이 사진을 잘 감상 할 수 있을 거예요. 진짜 웃긴 거예요.

There were a lot of creative costumes – more than I thought there would be. There was also a costume contest, but the winners (a pair of energetic young ladies wearing traditional Korean dresses and going crazy on stage with the Korean flags – you had to be there) took off before we could get a shot of it. We did get some good stuff, though. For example, sexy (resident) aliens?

도착했을 때는 많은 재밌는 복장들이 있었네요. 생각보다. 많은 사람들이 재밌고 창조적으로 자기 룩을 만들었어요. 복장 대회 했는데 1등을 잡은 한복을 입고 응원하는 애국자들을 (그 컨셉이 맞았나?) 못 찍었어요. 근데 재밌는 복장들이 많았어요. 예를들어서…섹세 외(국)계인?

Oooh! Fresh out of the shower! Naughty nurses – oh, my!

샤워에서 바로 나온 건셉? 음…멋쟁이? 그리고 미식축구 플레어? 오른 쪽에 섹시 간호사다. 뜨겁다!

That's the Japanese guy who won 2nd-place in the costume/dance contest, and he sure did grab the crowd's attention…as well as other things. Ahem.

여기 이 일본에서 온 친구가 복장 대회에서 2등을 잡았어요. 그리고 또 다른 걸…음…접았네요. ㅋㅋ 대단했어요!

Now here was an interesting costume: along with the cop, the girl was wearing what seemed like a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" slot machine, which seemed to be activated by putting in change, pulling down on the arm lever, and playing to see whether you won or lost. What a good idea – go to a party, make some money from your costume, and even get a little of the thrill of the wager.

좀 창조적인 건셉였네. 왼쪽에 경찰인 것같고 근데 오른 쪽에는 '가위바위보' 기계이네요. 동전을 놓고 오른 쪽 팔을 땡기면 가위바위보를 할 수 있어요. 똑똑하네! 파티 참석할 겸, 돈 벌겸, 돕ㄱ도 할 수 있는 거네요.

Street Peeps는 우리들의 눈길을 끌고 질문을 던지게끔 호기심을 유발하는 이들을 가리킵니다. 아마도 그의 패션이나 태도 혹은 내면에 숨겨져 있는 뭔가가 느껴지기도 하겠죠. 전철 옆자리나 줄을 서서 대기하는 사람이나 혹은 길거리에서 스쳐 지나가는 이들처럼 우리 주변에는 주목할만한 인물이 많고 우리는 그들에게 말을 건내지 않지만 Street Peeps에서는 이 기회를 붙잡아 여러분들께 보여드립니다. 그들은 우리들의 생각보다 재미있고 특별한 동시에 우리와 비슷한 사람들이라는걸 깨달을 수 있어요.

"Street Peeps" are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, "Who are you and what do you do?" Perhaps it's their fashion; perhaps it's their attitude; often, it's just a feeling that there's something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do, and we bring them to you.

이날은 정말 옷이 몸에 달라붙을만큼 더웠어요. 학교 커뮤니티를 통해 만난 사진 정모에서 만난 사람들과 특이한 카페에서 열을 좀 식힌 다음 홍대 놀이터로 올라오는 계단에서 fms가 이러는거예요. "좀 얼터너티브한 사람들 사진 찍고 싶은데." 그런 말을 하자마자 고개를 드는데 바로 눈 앞에 이 펑키한 룩을 가진 여자분이 앉아계시는 것 아니겠어요? 이건 열려라 참깨도 아니고 흥부의 소원빌기도 아니여..

We were walking around in Hongdae when we this young lady with an interesting alternative look caught our eye. Not only was she the very image of Hongdae in terms of embodying youth, music, and cool fashion, she also had a bad-ass tattoo on her arm, which was very real. We asked.

여름은 끝났진만 마지막 포토 세트를 드리고 싶었죠. 이 초상사진의 세트를 한달전에 홍대에서 찍었는데도 발표아하고 이 2 예쁜 스트리트모델들 너머가서 하면 안된다고 생각했죠. 너무 좋은 사진들이고 패션어블한 사람들인데.

The summer's over, but wanted to give you a last blast from summer's past, for one last warm, fuzzy, and sweaty feeling before the real cold starts to set in. We shot these in Hongdae more than a month ago, but didn't want to leave summer 2007 without giving you this one last set.

이 두 멋쟁이 언니들의 평범한 美, 쉬운 것처럼 이쁘게 옷을 다니는 걸 너무 좋아했어요. 미니원피스도 좋아했고, 액세서리, 가방, 샌달 그리고 웬지 너무 친절한 느낌 - 다 끌렸어요. 쿨하고 패션감각이 있는 20대 커리어걸로 아주 좋은 케이스인 것같기도 하고. 같이 다니는 2명이 있으니까 우리 운이 진짜 좋은 거죠!

We just really liked their respective outfits, from these ladies who make looking keeping cool and pretty as breezy as their summer mini-dresses. Their extremely warm and friendly personalities also seemed to shine through, and were a part of why we simply felt we had to stop them and ask for a picture, as very good examples of cool, latter-20-something professional women who have style.

우리 홍대에 갔는데 진짜 특이한 '홍대스러운' 패션 리더들 찾고 있었어요. 몇 명 찍었는데 갑자기 무슨 런웨이에 내려오는 패션모델처럼 빤짝빤짝 눈에 띈 여자가 지내가고 있는 게예요. 띄어서 말을 걸으러 갔는데 그리고 가지고 왔던 명함들이 다 떨어졌는데도 말을 걸었더니 우리를 바라보고, "아. 사진요? 네, 찍어요!" 재밌게 장난으로 먼저 대답하신 거예요, 우리 묻기 전에. 센스 좀 많이 있는 사람이 같아요.

We were walking through Hongdae looking for something a bit different when we saw a woman clearing a path through the crowds, turning every head that she passed. She was risqué as all heck, but she seemed to be enjoying the attention immensely. When we went to stop her and ask her for a picture, we had barely finished the "Excuse me…" before she had looked us up and down, saw the equipment we had, and interrupted our pitch with, "Oh, you want to take pictures. Go ahead." She was already two steps ahead of us.

근데 얘기해보니까 우리 킬러핑크 친구가 패션디자이너이 거예요! 요새 그만뒀는데 자기 옷 브랜드를 준비하고 있대요. 역시! 물론 자기 옷도 만드는데 그 날은 본인이 좋아하시는 일본 수입품 옷 웹사이트(lizlisaray.com)의 미니드레스를 입고 있었던 거예요. 분명히 핫핑크를 좋아하시는 분이죠.

It turns out that Killer Pink is a fashion designer who has just quit her job and is getting ready to start her own clothing label, and just happens to love hot pink, as you can see. She makes her own clothes, although what you see here is both off the rack and what she got from a Japanese import site lizlisaray.com. Smokin' stuff on that site!

근데 신기한 건 그녀의 모든 핑크 액세서리들이 다 똑같은 쌕감 - 똑같은 핫핑크이란 말이야. 같이 세트으로 나온 것같은데 아니래요. 하도 핫핑크 액세서리들이 많아서 정확하게 색깔 딱 어울리는 아이템들이 많다고 그랬어요. 대단하시네, 언니! ㅋㅋ

What fascinated us was the fact that her items, which she said she bought all separately, was so well matched. Even hot pink has different shades, but her accessories look like they were made for each other.

뭐라고해도…자기 스타일아니라고 해도 (난 개인적으로 너무 좋아하는데!) 인정해야 하는게 아주 오리지널한 여성이잖아요. 많은 다른 여자들이 - 한국이든 미국이든 - 그런 베이비돌 드레스를 입을 자신이 없는 사람들이 얼마나 많이 있겠는가? 아무리 몸짱이라도? 서울에서는 진짜 인터레스팅 패션 리더들이 아주 많아졌네요…10년전보다…진짜 대단해!

Truly pink from head to toe. And that babydoll dress – not many women in Korea (or anywhere) have the massive self-confidence required to walk past one's doorstep in that. There's no hiding anything with in that dress – and be careful sitting down; you might be breaking the law in some American states!
