"Fabulous Fashionistas" 컬럼에서는 서울의 뛰어난 멋쟁이들을 소개해 드립니다. 여기서 "멋"이란 어떠한 유행을 의미하는 것이나 비싼 명품 아이템을 자랑스럽게 가지고 있는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 자기 자신의 패션 스타일을 특별히 잘 보여주는 사람, 창조적인 코디로 눈에 확 띄는 사람, 그런 분들을 이 컬럼에서 만나보실 수 있습니다.

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don't choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they've managed to create their own unique style that one can't simply pass by without wanting to remember.

We met a lot of people on our trip to Hongdae last week, but the two young ladies we ran into in the park — Ms. Funky on the left and the Ms. Fifties on the right — really left an impression.

홍대에 지난 주말에 갔을 때 너무나 패션어블 사람들을 많이 만나봤는데 놀이터에서 우연히 만났던 이 두 언니들이 너무 특이한 거예요. 왼쪽의 친구는 좀 'funky'스타일이고 오른쪽은 '50년대 보수적인' 스타일의 컨셉이래요.

Wow. The orange-and-yellow checkered corset is cool as all get out, which Ms. Funky on the left said she bought from the clothing store she used to work at, which has since gone out of business. Since it wasn't a big brand item, anyway, it's now pretty much one-of-a-kind. As for Ms. Fifties on the right, we loved her old school hair and makeup, accented with the self-consciously cute, heart-shaped hairpins. Work it, girl!

우와. 오렌지/노란색 체크무늬의 코르셋은 재밌고 본인의 일했던 옷가게에서 샀대요. 근데 그 옷가게는 없어졌으니까 이 건 아주 특별한 거고일단 원래는 특별한 브랜드아니었고. 완전한 '시장 패션'이다! 우리 50년대의 공주의 머리스타일과 화장품을 맘에 드네요. 하트의 모양 머리핀도.

Dizzam. Wow. Jumpin' Jehosophat! Look at those old school, 50's secretarial stockings with the seam. I had a hunch they weren't purchased in Korea, and upon asking, she said that she had indeed purchased them on the Internet. Very nice, very Betty Boop. Or perhaps that would be Bettie Page? You can see a similar look here, which we found in Idae.

와우. 이런 스타킹을 한국에서 구하기 힘든 것같다고 생각해는데 물어보니까 역시 인터넷에서 샀대요. 진짜 Betty Boop을 생각하네. 아니면 Bettie Page? 여기도 이대에서 약간 비슷한 분위기있는 기사를 보지죠.

These two fabulous fashionistas are both into design, are eminently stylish, and are even forming their own band. Can they get much cooler? We do have the feeling we'll see them again, so we'll have to come back and check in on them sometime. And thanks to both of them for taking the time to both pose and answer our barrage of questions! Looking great, ladies!

이 멋진 여성들이 지금 디자인쪽에 일하는 거고 지금 밴드도 준비하는 거네요. 이 언니들한테 진짜 다시 볼 느낌이나는 것같네요. 궁금한 것들 진짜 많아서, 그쵸? 이 만큼 멋진 사람들을 실제로 만날 기회가 있었으니까 진짜 내 영광였죠. 이렇게 멋진 포즈와 긴 얘기를 해주니까 고마웠어요!

2주일전에 이번 봄 시즌의 첫 따뜻한 토요일 밤에 홍대로 갔었는데 사람들이 진짜로 뭘 입고 다니는지 어떤 트렌드 정말로 표현하게 되고 있는지 한번 보러 왔어요. 왜냐하면 요즘에 홍대는 그냥 한가지의 스타일이나 룩이 된 것아니라 정말 서울의 패션 중심이 된 거예요. 다른 동네보다 패션 룩의 범위가 아주 넓으며 유행 옷부터 펑크, 야한 클러브 옷부터 남자친구를 만날 때 얌전한 드레스까지, 미국/일본 그리고 한국스러운 옷도 다 보일 수 있거든요.

Two weeks ago, I took a walk through Hongdae on a Saturday night, and the first real warm night of spring. I just wanted to see what people were really wearing, and looking for anyone who caught my eye. Hongdae has truly become one of the most interesting fashion centers of Seoul, since it has such a variety of styles, encompassing everything from prevalent trends to punk, from the most risque to the most conservative, from American, Japanese, to the most Korean looks.

노란색 코트를 입는 여자를 봤는데 너무 색깔과 디자인 좋아서 잡았어요. 'Earth tone'으로(연한 회색에서 검은 갈색에 이르는 난색조) 코디 되게 잘한 거네요. 노란색이랑 초록색과 칼색. 웬지 이 친구의 피부색이랑 어울린 것같았어요. 아 - 그리고 내가 실수해서 어쩔 수없이 포샵에서 조금 컨닝해야 했어요. 그래서 색감이 조금 이상하죠. 미안!

I saw the flash of yellow and soon had my first catch of the day! I liked the yellow, the green, and brown earth tones. The colors also seemed to match her skin tone well. I was having a bit of trouble with the flash, so I cheated a bit with Photoshop to save this picture.

우리 사이트의 믿음대로 '패션이 길거리부터 시작된다'고 하는데 맞는 말같죠? 이 재밌는 반스타킹은 웬지 그냥 캐주얼 양말의 느낌이라 더 좋았던 것같아요.

You know that fashion starts from the bottom, and she had great stockings — I liked the way they bunched up and kind of looked more like tube socks than real thigh-highs. It made the look more casual.

안녕, 이 친구의 친구! Lou Reed 티셔츠 그리고 코피어싱 최고. 진짜 멋지네요!

왔섭?! …존나 쿨 사나이들을 널이터에서 만났는데 "Seoul City Rockers"이라고 부르고 b-boy 그룹이예요. 너무 쿨한 사이트만 봐도 정말 멋진 녀석들이네요.

Whassup?! I met some Hot Boyz in the park also known as the "Seoul City Rockers" — they are apparently b-boys and do the whole popular b-boy thing. They have a frickin' cool site, though, which you must check out. Betta have yo' flash loaded, yo!

놀이터에 지난 이 미녀를 봤는데 촬영성공! (떨렸는데…)

I got up the nerve to catch this hot girl passing by the park!

와우. 그 보우타이를 너무 마음에 든다. 그리고 그 교복식 나온 자켓도 (두타아닌가?). 코디를 진짜 창조적으로 한 거네요.

OK. I love the bow tie. I recognize the Dongdaemun Doota-brand "schoolgirl" jacket, which is popular. But coordinating it with the bow tie — nice move.

놀이터에서 평범한 3가지 스타일인데 뭔가 평범하지 않은 것같았어요. 왼쪽에서 얌전함, 캐주얼함, 화려함이 — 다 한 사진에서 나오네요. 그리고 가운데 친구의 '모나리사 미소'도 좋았어요.

These three girls in the park are pretty everyday styles, but I like how the three friends cover demure, casual, and sporty styles all in one shot. Also, the girl in the middle's "Mona Lisa smile" added a nice touch to the picture.

오예. 이번 시즌은 컬러플이죠. 밤에 썬글래스? 오예!

Oh, yeah. Rocking the sunglasses at night and this season's bright colors. Oh, it's gotta be the 80's.

이 노래가 죽인 거죠? 진짜 80년대 다시 돌아왔네.

This song is the shit, right? The 80's are truly back, and they were never cooler.

한국에서는 "고트"이란 패션을 많이 못 봤는데 진짜 잘했더라고요. 그리고 뭐 생각이 드냐면 일본의 언더그라운드 패션 문화는 아주 자극적인데 한국에서는 아무래도 일반 길거리에서 입을 수 있는 것같아요. 물론 낮에 어디 사무실에서 입는 스타일아니지만 밤에 홍대에서 보면은 웬지 딱 어울리는 느낌? 진짜 멋졌어요.

The "Goth light" crew. You don't see much Goth or other underground cultures much in Korea, and when you do, they're not nearly as extreme as in Japan. Although you probably couldn't wear this look to the office, it somehow seems pretty normal when it comes to one night in Hongdae.

아야! 흡혈귀이면 내 생피를 빨아벅어도 됩니다.

근데 홍대에서 나가면서 찍기 어려운 한국의 대표적인 여성스러운 스타일. 많은 이렇게 귀엽고 여성스러움의 포인트로 나온 친구들이 활영허락을 잘 안해주거든요. 이 친구들한테 친절한 협조를 해주니까 진짜 고마웠네요!

As I left Hongdae, I bumped into two young ladies sporting the demure, more feminine styles that are so hard to get people to pose in. Understandably, the girls rocking this kind of style tend to be a bit more conservative, and generally turn down requests for a picture.

이 사진으로 마칠게요. 막지막 완전히 다른 스타일이고 — 섹시한 스타일부터, 고트으로, 얌전한 룩까지 — 진짜 홍대에서는 다양한 패션이 있네요. 그리고 홍대에서는 다양한 사람들이 있을수록 친절한 사람들도 많아요. 마지막 사진으로 이런 친절한 미소로 끝나면 기분이 좋죠?

We were really happy to get these two young ladies on camera, and it they were a a good way to end this trip through Hongdae. And it's always good to end with such a nice smile, no?

At first glance, you might think her to be a fair young maiden from the age of Chosun…

This is DJ Aaron doing his best at a little drag show at Club Cargo in Hongdae, which hosted the "Hidden" party, and was absolutely fabulous!

장소는 2주전 홍대 놀이터 옆 Club Cargo. 파티 브랜드 Rainbow가 Club Cargo와 함께 처음으로 홍대에서 펼친 드랙퀸 "Hidden" party는 만족 스러웠다. 이번주는 Club Via에서 라고 하는데 이것도 볼만할 듯. 처음 가 본 카고는 사람들도 분위기도 정말 쿨했어요. 근데 장소 때문에 재밌었나? 아니면 Hidden이란 파티로 온 사람들때문였나요? 물론 둘다이죠. 클럽도 놀기에 좋고 물론 사람들도 흥미로운 사람들였죠.

The organizers of the "Hidden" party, which took place two weekends ago, are hosting another party called "Rainbow" again this Saturday, although this time it will be at Club Via in Hongdae. Since I haven't been to Club Via, I can't tell you much about it. The "Hidden" people seemed to throw a good party, though Club Cargo was the host. Which was more important to the fun? Neither, I think. The club is cool, and the people were cool.

Here, even the bartenders and staff feel the funk, because the cozy atmosphere really makes it a fun and safe place to dance and just have a good time.

드랙쇼 뒤에 또 빠질 수 없었던 게 고고보이들. 무대 앞은 그야말로 인산인해.

And of course, there's the drag show, along with the male gogo dancers who are the main attraction!

댁 규수가 애타게 님을 기다리는 그녀…아니죠! 그녀는…진짜 잘 노는 애이네! 너무나 자아알…?!

So that's the Chosun maiden, then! She really knows how to work the crowd!

그리고 옆에 도와주는 '고고댄서'들도 보기 좋은 것같아. 특히 앞줄에 있는 여자들한테! 그래도 무대웨이 있는 액션보다 더 재밌는 사람들도 있었죠. 춤추고, 친절하게 서로 얘기도하고, 너무 편하고 진짜 쿨하게 놀던 사람들이였네요.

And so do her gogo dancer helpers! Still, there was a lot more to the party than just the show. Any party is made fun by the people who attend it, and these were some of the coolest folks I'd seen.

이 친구의 태도도 최고! ㅋㅋ 얘기해보니까 이 친구도 파티 프로모션하는 일도하니까 또 다른 파티에 대해 알게 된 거예요. 진짜 흥미로운 사람들이 사방에 막 나타나고 있었어요!

Ditto for her attitude! As it turned out, this young lady is also a party promoter, and is also having another party this weekend, which you can learn more about here. There was so much going on and  interesting folks were coming out of everywhere, it seemed.

한국사회에 여러 공간들 중에는 바로 여기가 진짜 인종, 국적, 성차별, 그리고 동성애혐오증업없이 편한 마음으로 놀 수 있는 데예요. 다 황영한 느낌이 나는 것처럼. 근데 단일 한가지 편견이 있네요. 그 건 바로 좁은 생각, 또 좁은 마음이 있는 사람이다. 그런 사람들이 물론 필요도 없고 일단 안올 거아니야, 그쵸? ㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 누구나 남의 쿨한 속마음을 볼 수 있다면 그 사람은 바로 진짜 쿨한 거지.

This is one of the few places in society where, whatever your race, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation, everyone is welcome. The only discrimination that goes on here against people with narrow minds and cold hearts. Indeed, those with the ability to see the true cool in people can be called truly "cool."

그리고 진짜로 쿨한 사람들이 쿨한사람들이랑 낄리끼리 하는 거네! 작년 여름에 밑에 툴한 지나가는 죽이는 문신이 있는 여자를 보고 찍었는데 그녀는 너무 빨리 걸어가고 있었기 때문에 금방 없어졌죠. 근데 이젠 이 클럽에서 봤던이 금방 알아봤죠. 역시. 그때는 홍대에서 봤고 또 보게 된 거지. 난 쿨한 데로 왔으니까 볼 수 있는 가능성이 높은 거죠? 그쵸. (작년의 글을 봐봐요.)

And it seems cool people do stick together! As an avid street fashion photographer, when I saw this very cool woman on the dance floor, I instantly recognized her, since I had shot her in Hongdae the previous summer! (See the post from last year.)

이 건 바로 운면아닌가? 그때는 초상권침해가 될가봐 어굴을 잘랐는데 지금 만나봤으니까 드디어 이 멋진 사실을 우리 독자들에계 알릴 수 있네요. 그리고 그 문신은 진짜 죽인다야. 이 클럽는 이런 사람들을 끌릴 수 있으면 owner가 어떤 분일까요?

But she had walked so fast, we couldn't catch up to her to get her contact information, so we couldn't include her full face on the site. But now, since talking to her, we can! Is this not fate? Or perhaps is it that cool people all tend to hang out together? If the woman with the snake tatoo is any indication, check out the club's owner.

참. 이렇게 멋쟁이로 나오시면 어떡하냐? Club Cargo에 잘 다니는 멋쟁이 애들이 왜 많이 가는지 느낄 수 있다. 야아아아. 진짜 멋지네요.

With fly and fashionable owners like this, it's no wonder Club Cargo can so easily draw the cool crowds they do.

홍대에서 만난 20대 초반. 강북의 힙한 곳에서 자주 볼 수 있는 스타일이죠.지난 겨울부터 등장하기 시작한 펄 스타킹은 이제는 어디서든 머스트 아이템인듯. 퍼 머플러와 스팽글 핸드백으로 포인트를 준 심플하면서도 지극히 여성스러운 엘레강스 스타일.

The woman we bumped into in Hongdae is typical of a lot of women in their 20's you'll find in the hipper areas of northern Seoul: a simple and very feminine outfit, with a feeling of "elegance" added by the fur muffler on the coat, and accented by the shiny stockings that have been really in since last winter, but have become almost de rigueur for women wanting to add a bit of spunk to their look. Her cute black bag is also spark-spangled, another accent to match her tights.

홍대에서 다니고 있었는데 정말 흔미스러운 클러그를 신는 여자를 보게 됐어요. 어떤 건지 너무 많이 궁금해서 어쩔 수 없이 말을 걸었죠.

We were in Hongdae again when we spied a woman wearing the greatest pair of clogs! Clog heels, actually, and they looked too interesting to just pass up.

예쁘죠? 그리고 편해보이고 디테일도 이쁘고. 아주 비싸겠다고 생각했는데 물어보니까 4, 5만원 밖에 안 썼대요. 그리고 이 언니는 어디서 구했는지 기억하다고 하니까 잘 됐네요. 어머! 찾았다!

Nice, huh? Pretty, comfortable, and lots of detailing. We thought they'd be expensive, perhaps $200-300 or so, but she actually remembers them being just $40 or so and she even remembers where she ordered them from! Oh! we found them!

We caught up with this amazingly dressed trio coming out of a rock concert in Anam-dong, dressed in the most detailed, lovingly crafted punk styles we've seen in a long, long time. This is a whole new level of D-I-Y.

안암동의 락 콘서트 현장에서 나오신 분들 중에, 펑크로 제대로 차려 입으신 세 분들의 사진을 찍었습니다.

There's a lot of pressure to conform in Korea, so it's always refreshing to find people who can go beyond the conventional and find their own truly unique style, and these three have definitely got it! These are no punks-for-show or posers; this is everyday wear for these folks. They're the real deal.

한국에서 튀는 복장을 입는데는 엄청난 심리적 압박을 느끼게 마련입니다. 그러다보니, 대중적인 스타일을 넘어, 자신만의 스타일대로 입고다니는 사람들을 찾는다는 것은 상당히 신선한 경험이라 할 수 있지요. 바로 여기 세 분이 그렇습니다. 이 분들은 공연을 하시는 분들도 아니고, 코스튬 플레이를 하고 계신 것도 아니랍니다.

An important part of the punk aestetic is the do-it-yourself, handmade look. This beautifully hand-painted No Brain shirt really catches the eye (and carries a loving message about the importance of family on the back^^), and the cat-shaped backpack had a suprisingly homey vibe. Customization is key, and the painting, embroidery, and buttons all go towards making this outfit utterly unique.

펑크룩에 있어서 중요한 부분은 자신이 원하는대로 꾸민다는 것입니다. 이분들은 정말 '지대로' 입으셨습니다. 위의 No Brain을 그린 셔츠는 보는 이의 시선을 한 번에 잡아 끌지요. 그리고 뒤에는 가족 사랑의 중요성에 관한 메시지가 적혀있습니다. 뒤에 달린 고양이 가방은 저 분 뒤에 참 편하게 늘어져있는 느낌이었습니다. 자작품과 함께, 티셔츠의 그림, 뱃지 등의 아이템이 어우러져 매우 독특한 느낌이 듭니다.

Punk is the anti-fashion fashion, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's own special appeal. While deliberately bucking trends and going with extreme accessories designed to be transgressive and provocative (like their colored contact lenses and the many, many piercings they sport) they've still managed to be eye-catching.

펑크는 이른바 'anti-fashion'이라 하지만, 외관을 중시하지 않는다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 피어싱이나 커다란 팔찌처럼, 과하다 싶을 정도로 화려한 액세서리를 착용하거나, 기존의 트렌드와는 차별화된 모습으로 사람들의 시선을 집중시킵니다.

KISS-inspired makeup makes for a dramatic look, but that's just what these two were aiming for. Also note the rips and shreds on that t-shirt ~ sexy, cool, and definitely not what the other girls are wearing out. It just makes these two that much more fashionable to be able to reference contemporary Korean women's fashion while subverting it and using items like frilly skirts and fancy patterned stockings in different way.

KISS를 바탕으로 코디를 할 경우는 보통 드라마틱한 느낌을 주게 마련인데, 이 두 분이 의도하신 것이 바로 그것입니다. 찢어진 티셔츠와, 그 위에 그려진 그림을 보면, 웬만한 여자분들이 입으실만한 느낌은 아니죠.

Never mind the Bollocks, here's some Sex Pistols accessories. The Sex Pistols are what first caught these girls ears, but their accessories are what caught our eye. That's some heavy-duty leather, spikes, and chains!

화려한 무늬의 스타킹이나, 장식이 달린 스커트는 일반적인 여성복 패션과 대비됨으로써 두 분의 스타일을 더 돋보이게 합니다. 그리고, Sex Pistols의 이름이 들어간 액세서리도 보이네요. Sex Pistols는 이 아가씨들의 귀를 사로잡았을 것이고, 이 아가씨들의 액세서리는 보는 사람의 눈을 사로잡습니다.두꺼운 가죽에 찡과 체인도 달렸네요.

And the stockings work as a nice bridge between some heavy-duty boots and the frilly lace and ribbons of the purple leopard-print skirt. That's mixing it up with style. And it's old OLD school, harkening back the coquettishness of British punk in the 1970's. Altogether well played! Rock on!
