여기는 아주 흔한 학생나이 옷이예요. 대부분 신촌/이대 그리고 홍대에서 찍은 거예요.

Last week, me and Mr. Moon from Ewha Media went over to the Ewha Women\’s University campus to celebrate the warm weather and to see what the girls were wearing. Our first catch was funky, with a distinctive white military jacket.

Then came the skinny black socks that is such a major trend here in Korea — and won\’t ever quite disappear. I think she does a pretty good job with them here,  you\’re into that sort of Japanese/Korean fetish-cutesy look.

Did someone say fetish fashion? Of course I had to take this one…

I liked how the wide-angle lens caught Mr. Moon\’s lens in the frame. The male photographer\’s gaze in full effect.

And in the other direction, with flowers. I wanted to shoot the flash against the sun, but I overexposed just a tad, and I should have underexposed the sky, as I did in the other pictures.

We also bumped into a class grad student, on her way to work, I think. But I loved her accessories and couldn\’t let her go without fishing for a picture!

By this time, we were exhausted, but I couldn\’t help but ask this young lady to pose. She exuded a confident girl-power not seen since Xena, the Warrior Princess.

Extreme angle, slightly underexposed sky, flashed foregound — check! Naughty angle, inquisitive passersby — check! And the warrior princess sandals — nice!

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don’t choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they’ve managed to create their own unique style that one can’t simply pass by without wanting to remember.

한국의 스트리트 패션은 다양성이 생기고 있는 거네요. 요즘에 딱 ‘일본식’이라고 하기 힘든 거고 ‘미국식’도 말하기 그렇네요. 뭐 압구정으로 내려가면 좀더 미국적 냄새를 날 거예요. 이 여자 3먕을 지나가고 있었는데 너무 화려하게 눈에 띄었기 때문에 사진을 물어볼 수 없을 밖에 없었죠. 너무 ‘컬러플’과 ‘여성스러운’과 ‘도시적 쿨’한 다양한 3가지 룩들이 모여있어서. 일본 스타일이며 잘 한국화를 된 것같고. 뭐 자기 스타일로 만들었죠, 뭐. 일본은 큰 영향이라고 하겠지만 한국식으로 단순화된 것같고 좀터 street-ready스타일로 된 거고요.

Korean street fashion is getting more varied, indeed. These days, the influence of Japan is as present as ever, although perhaps somewhat Koreanized and simplified, I think. Of course, one might say, “Hey! That’s just Japanese fashion!” but I think this influence is important to track and is inevitably part of certain Korean looks, just as much as American fashion is a huge influence as well. But I wouldn’t simply call Korean fashion “American fashion” warmed over.

그 구두! 뭐랄까! 너무 재밌고 좀 어린 느낌이 나고 이쁜 신호등의 빨간색 신호만큼 교통을 STOP할 수 있는 능력이 있는 것같아요.

The shoes are fabulous, aren’t they? Red tights that can stop traffic, with a youthful and playful pair of red-and-white polka-dot shoes. How’d she pull that off?

이 친구는 너무 멋진 액세서리 벨트가 있어요. 배트맨보다 준비되고 있는 패션어블한 사람이네요.반지도 맘에 들고 그리고 티셔츠도. 전쟁 때 무슨 전글에 가도 너무 패션어블하게 생존할 수 있을 것같아요. 멋져!

This girl’s got more accessories than Batman’s utility belt. Love the rings, the phone, and the t-shirt. She looks like she could survive for three weeks in a wartime jungle and still be able to be coolly accessorized. You’re ready for anything, girl!

이 친구도 완전히 다른 룩도 있어요. 그녀도 좀 일본스럽지만 제일 한국수준으로 평범하게 다닐 수 있는 것같아요. 웬지 살짝 섹시하고 귀여운 스타일? 여성스러운 long blouse하고 lace slip과 반스토킹도 신어서 kitten heel이랑 쌀짝 여성스러운 귀여움.

This young lady has a completely different look as well. She’s also has a Japanese look, with a girly long blouse, what looks like a lace slip, and the ubiquitous thigh-high stockings, which adds a little “naughty” to her “nice.” It adds up to a slightly sexy-cute, and is a somewhat dressed-down Japanese look.

이 여자들을 만나서 방가운 이유는 너무 평범패션하고 자기 자극적인 개인 스타일 사이에 딱 좋은 룩을 잘 키운 거니까 좋았어요. 잘했어요, 당신 멋쟁이 아가씨들아!

I was very happy to meet these young ladies in the street, who seemed to strike a nice balance between everyday fashion and their own edgy, personal styles. Looking good!

화려한 봄이 드디어 왔네요! 우리는 길거리의 패션을 길거리에서 잘 보고 있을께요. 이사람들이랑 다니는 것아니겠지만. ㅋㅋ

What do you reckon spring will bring? We’ll be sticking around the streets to tell you. But maybe not with these people. Hehe.

이 “길거리에서” (“On the Streets”)이란 컬럼은 서울의 특별한 동네, 공간, 장소를 자세히 보는 거예요. 서울사람이라도 새로운 눈으로 한국의 패션과 각각의 거리마다의 고유의 느낌을 느낄 수 있게요.

The “On the Streets” column takes a close look at particular spaces and places in Seoul. It could be a neighborhood, an area, or a small store. But whatever and wherever it is, it will surely be a place that will tell you more about the fashion and feeling of Korean life.

아시다시파, 한국에서는 첫눈은 아주 중요한 거죠. 왜냐하면 한국/일본에서는 첫눈은 로맨틱한 분위기이니까요. 여자/남자친구랑 같이 있으면 어쩌면 키스를 할도 수있는데 떨어져 있으면 적어도 문자메세지나 헌화 한 통이나 해야 죠. 오늘 겨울의 첫눈이 왔는데 이대에서 너무 기쁜 사람들이 많았어요. 밖에 길거리에서는 어떤 여학생들 4명이 막 뛰면서 웃고 큰 소리를 치고 있었네요. 겨울이 공식적으로 온 거였네요.

In Korea, the first snow of the year is a romantic event. If you’re a couple and you happen to be meeting together at just that moment, it’s the sort of thing that might require a kiss, or if apart, at least a phone call or text message. On tonight’s first snowfall here in Seoul, while in the Ewha Women’s University neighborhood, we spied a group of four young ladies jumping up and down in joy, screaming and giggling at the top of their lungs. It was official – winter had come.

이 커플이 가게에서 나오자마자 눈 때문에 깜짝 놀랜 모습을 봤네요. 좋은 기념이 될 수 있으니까 초상사진을 찍어도 되는지 물어봤죠.

We caught this couple at the moment they spied the snow, and we asked them to pose for our cameras and share the moment with us.

귀여워? 추워!

Cute? Cold!

진짜 생각보다 우산이 없는 사람들이 많았더라고요. 근데 어떤 사람들이 창조적으로 문제를 해결한 거죠.

It seemed that a lot of people were caught without umbrellas this evening, so there were some creative solutions to the problem.

진짜 잘 생각했고 만들었네요, 언니들아! 기능적으로만 쓸모 있는 아이템뿌만 아니라 너무 멋진 스노우 스타일을 만들었네요!

Not only function, but making a fashion statement as well! Way to go, girls!
