"Fabulous Fashionistas" 컬럼에서는 서울의 뛰어난 멋쟁이들을 소개해 드립니다. 여기서 "멋"이란 어떠한 유행을 의미하는 것이나 비싼 명품 아이템을 자랑스럽게 가지고 있는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 자기 자신의 패션 스타일을 특별히 잘 보여주는 사람, 창조적인 코디로 눈에 확 띄는 사람, 그런 분들을 이 컬럼에서 만나보실 수 있습니다.

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don't choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they've managed to create their own unique style that one can't simply pass by without wanting to remember.

한국의 스트리트 패션은 다양성이 생기고 있는 거네요. 요즘에 딱 '일본식'이라고 하기 힘든 거고 '미국식'도 말하기 그렇네요. 뭐 압구정으로 내려가면 좀더 미국적 냄새를 날 거예요. 이 여자 3먕을 지나가고 있었는데 너무 화려하게 눈에 띄었기 때문에 사진을 물어볼 수 없을 밖에 없었죠. 너무 '컬러플'과 '여성스러운'과 '도시적 쿨'한 다양한 3가지 룩들이 모여있어서. 일본 스타일이며 잘 한국화를 된 것같고. 뭐 자기 스타일로 만들었죠, 뭐. 일본은 큰 영향이라고 하겠지만 한국식으로 단순화된 것같고 좀터 street-ready스타일로 된 거고요.

Korean street fashion is getting more varied, indeed. These days, the influence of Japan is as present as ever, although perhaps somewhat Koreanized and simplified, I think. Of course, one might say, "Hey! That's just Japanese fashion!" but I think this influence is important to track and is inevitably part of certain Korean looks, just as much as American fashion is a huge influence as well. But I wouldn't simply call Korean fashion "American fashion" warmed over.

그 구두! 뭐랄까! 너무 재밌고 좀 어린 느낌이 나고 이쁜 신호등의 빨간색 신호만큼 교통을 STOP할 수 있는 능력이 있는 것같아요.

The shoes are fabulous, aren't they? Red tights that can stop traffic, with a youthful and playful pair of red-and-white polka-dot shoes. How'd she pull that off?

이 친구는 너무 멋진 액세서리 벨트가 있어요. 배트맨보다 준비되고 있는 패션어블한 사람이네요.반지도 맘에 들고 그리고 티셔츠도. 전쟁 때 무슨 전글에 가도 너무 패션어블하게 생존할 수 있을 것같아요. 멋져!

This girl's got more accessories than Batman's utility belt. Love the rings, the phone, and the t-shirt. She looks like she could survive for three weeks in a wartime jungle and still be able to be coolly accessorized. You're ready for anything, girl!

이 친구도 완전히 다른 룩도 있어요. 그녀도 좀 일본스럽지만 제일 한국수준으로 평범하게 다닐 수 있는 것같아요. 웬지 살짝 섹시하고 귀여운 스타일? 여성스러운 long blouse하고 lace slip과 반스토킹도 신어서 kitten heel이랑 쌀짝 여성스러운 귀여움.

This young lady has a completely different look as well. She's also has a Japanese look, with a girly long blouse, what looks like a lace slip, and the ubiquitous thigh-high stockings, which adds a little "naughty" to her "nice." It adds up to a slightly sexy-cute, and is a somewhat dressed-down Japanese look.

이 여자들을 만나서 방가운 이유는 너무 평범패션하고 자기 자극적인 개인 스타일 사이에 딱 좋은 룩을 잘 키운 거니까 좋았어요. 잘했어요, 당신 멋쟁이 아가씨들아!

I was very happy to meet these young ladies in the street, who seemed to strike a nice balance between everyday fashion and their own edgy, personal styles. Looking good!

화려한 봄이 드디어 왔네요! 우리는 길거리의 패션을 길거리에서 잘 보고 있을께요. 이사람들이랑 다니는 것아니겠지만. ㅋㅋ

What do you reckon spring will bring? We'll be sticking around the streets to tell you. But maybe not with these people. Hehe.

이 "길거리에서" ("On the Streets")이란 컬럼은 서울의 특별한 동네, 공간, 장소를 자세히 보는 거예요. 서울사람이라도 새로운 눈으로 한국의 패션과 각각의 거리마다의 고유의 느낌을 느낄 수 있게요.

The "On the Streets" column takes a close look at particular spaces and places in Seoul. It could be a neighborhood, an area, or a small store. But whatever and wherever it is, it will surely be a place that will tell you more about the fashion and feeling of Korean life.

아시다시파, 한국에서는 첫눈은 아주 중요한 거죠. 왜냐하면 한국/일본에서는 첫눈은 로맨틱한 분위기이니까요. 여자/남자친구랑 같이 있으면 어쩌면 키스를 할도 수있는데 떨어져 있으면 적어도 문자메세지나 헌화 한 통이나 해야 죠. 오늘 겨울의 첫눈이 왔는데 이대에서 너무 기쁜 사람들이 많았어요. 밖에 길거리에서는 어떤 여학생들 4명이 막 뛰면서 웃고 큰 소리를 치고 있었네요. 겨울이 공식적으로 온 거였네요.

In Korea, the first snow of the year is a romantic event. If you're a couple and you happen to be meeting together at just that moment, it's the sort of thing that might require a kiss, or if apart, at least a phone call or text message. On tonight's first snowfall here in Seoul, while in the Ewha Women's University neighborhood, we spied a group of four young ladies jumping up and down in joy, screaming and giggling at the top of their lungs. It was official – winter had come.

이 커플이 가게에서 나오자마자 눈 때문에 깜짝 놀랜 모습을 봤네요. 좋은 기념이 될 수 있으니까 초상사진을 찍어도 되는지 물어봤죠.

We caught this couple at the moment they spied the snow, and we asked them to pose for our cameras and share the moment with us.

귀여워? 추워!

Cute? Cold!

진짜 생각보다 우산이 없는 사람들이 많았더라고요. 근데 어떤 사람들이 창조적으로 문제를 해결한 거죠.

It seemed that a lot of people were caught without umbrellas this evening, so there were some creative solutions to the problem.

진짜 잘 생각했고 만들었네요, 언니들아! 기능적으로만 쓸모 있는 아이템뿌만 아니라 너무 멋진 스노우 스타일을 만들었네요!

Not only function, but making a fashion statement as well! Way to go, girls!

Street Peeps는 우리들의 눈길을 끌고 질문을 던지게끔 호기심을 유발하는 이들을 가리킵니다. 아마도 그의 패션이나 태도 혹은 내면에 숨겨져 있는 뭔가가 느껴지기도 하겠죠. 전철 옆자리나 줄을 서서 대기하는 사람이나 혹은 길거리에서 스쳐 지나가는 이들처럼 우리 주변에는 주목할만한 인물이 많고 우리는 그들에게 말을 건내지 않지만 Street Peeps에서는 이 기회를 붙잡아 여러분들께 보여드립니다. 그들은 우리들의 생각보다 재미있고 특별한 동시에 우리와 비슷한 사람들이라는걸 깨달을 수 있어요.

"Street Peeps" are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, "Who are you and what do you do?" Perhaps it's their fashion; perhaps it's their attitude; often, it's just a feeling that there's something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do. And what we keep realizing that you should never judge a book by its cover. Most importantly, we realize that perfect strangers are often much more interesting that you might think, but are very much like you and me.

아… 일요일 서울의 이대나 신촌거리엔 커플들이 많다. 여친이나 남친이 없는 싱글이면 속상할 정도로 많은 거죠. 그리고 비지니스들이 거의 커플전용인데: 커피샵, 아이스크림, 패미리레스토랑, 극장, 등등. 완전히 '커플의 문화'가 있다고 할 수 있는 거예요. 그리고 이 문화에서는…한국에서…남자가 여친의 가방을 들어줄 때 많아요.

사실 미국사람으로써 상상할 수 없는 일이예요. 왜냐하면 여자의 가방을 만지는 것도 실례일 수도 있어요. 여자의 가방은 자기 비밀들이 들어가 있어서. 그리고 패션쪽으로 생각하면 여자의 가방은 바로 자기 옷이랑 꼭 함께 나와야 되는 거라고 생각해요. 그래서 미국에서는 "가방을 들어줄께" 그 것은 상상할 수 없는 일이예요. 여자한테 잘한다고 배려주는 거라고 생각도 안해요: 아예 있을 수 없는 생각이니까요.

근데 한국은 다른 나라, 다른 문화예요. 미국여자가 자기 가방을 죽도록 양보하면 안된다고 생각하는 거랑 반대로 한국여자들이 즐겁게 자기 남자친구들한테 가방을 많이 주는 거죠. 서로 기분 좋게. 귀엽게. 사랑스럽게. 그래서 윗사진에서 남자분이 자기 잠바 여친한테 입게 하는 것, 가방을 들어주면서 - 그 모습은 되게 귀엽네요. 아주 한국스러운 모습. 그리고 왠지 서로 아주 많이 사랑하는 느낌이 나죠. 이렇게 배려주는 건 자연스러운 것같아서.

Ah, Sunday in Seoul. On any given Saturday or Sunday in the big city, you will find certain neighborhoods full of couples. The area near (and between) both Yonsei and Ewha Women's Universities are so full of couples, one feels strange to not be in one. And the area is chock full of places catering to both couples, or small groups of women – "family" restaurants such as Outback or TGI Friday's, a million coffee shops, and a mixture of specialty ice cream, dessert, and other kinds of places to eat things not good for you. And as is the fashion in Korea, it is considered courteous for the man to carry the woman's bag.

But, as an American, I can't help but think traditionally: the purse is part of the woman's outfit – and the funny difference is that most American women would never relinquish their bag to a man. Still, I think that men are putting a lot more effort into their appearances than they used to, but with the new influences of hip hop/skater/punk cool, men aren't really supposed to look "dressed up" but yet are really putting effort into the details of their look, down to the exact amount of battering their jeans take and where, and how scuffed their shoes are. It seems to be part of a very calculated look that says, "I'm a man and secure enough to use my girlfriend's accessories as my own personal bling."

And I just have to ask – is this bag not fabulous? Nice choice, girlfriend! And it's pretty representative of the continuing trend of having big bags with metallic "futurist" materials. Her dress is also typical of the more simplifying trends of less complex or "mod" patterns, and they say that this year, "gray is the new black." Well, girlfriend's gray and silver all over, and in a way that definitely works.

근데 패션잡지이라서 한번 자기 원래 옷과 액세서리로 바뀌줘달라고 했죠. 이 모습도 너무 멋지지 않아요? 남자는 좀 쿨한 스포티 룩, 여자는 아주 이쁘게 나오고. 아주 사랑스러운 표정을 하면서. 우와. 좋은 '사랑의 모델'들이네요. 그래도 여자가 자기 가방을 들고 다시 포즈를 잡으니까 좋잖아요. 가방은 너무 이뻐서요.

For the sake of fashion, I had the couple switch back to their original clothes and accessories for another shot. What you might notice about the man is he seems far more dressed down than his companion, I think, to Western eyes; in the Korean context, I do see an ongoing trend that's a definite change from even ten years ago, when it was common to see men on dates who were simply casual, with no real effort having been placed on their appearance. Or you saw men in suits, dressed to the nines. As I just noted above, this is changing, and fast.

Nowadays, the trend for men isn't necessarily getting more formal; rather, it's getting more purposeful. What I mean by this, is that in a masculine look influenced more by hip-hop and "skater" looks, which has formed into a more masculine look, a macho chic that is a strong counterpoint to the "metrosexual" and quite frankly very effeminate look that is also popular among Korean men these days. In a way, the girl dressed to kill on the arm of a man who is content to enjoy the woman as the center of fashion attention just seems somehow to work in the Korean context.

근데 이 사진을 찍은지 좀 오래 되서 오늘은 이메일이 왔었어요. 이렇게 나왔는데요:

전 회색원피스에 긴 파마머리였꾸요,제 남자친구는 짧은 빡빡머리에 흰티셔츠를 입고 있었어요-

싸이트에 저희 사진이 안 올라진건지 찾을 수가 없어서요..ㅎ

사실, 4일인 이번주 화욜날 남자친구가 군대를 갔꺼든요,

그래서 남자친구도 머리가 짧았던거구요-

이렇게 멜 드린건,

잘 나왔든 안 나왔든 상관없이 남자친구랑 같이 나온 사진들,

혹 보내주실 순 없으실지 여쭤보려고 메일 드려요..^-^

답 메일 기다리겠습니다.

우와. 감동적이다. 사실, 이 사진들이 너무 잘나왔으니까 좀 좋은 글이랑발표하고 싶었던 거예요. 근데 다른 입장으로 생각하면 그 커플이 잘 안나온 줄 알 수 있겠다고 느껴진 거예요. 그래서 빨리 올리고 싶었고 그리고 이 말을 알리고 싶었네요: 이런 사랑스러운 사연까지 받아보게 되어서 진짜 깊은 좋은 사랑인 것같으시네요. 제대후 이 여자분 꼭 기다리고 있을 것같아요. 그러니 남자분! 성실히 부담없이 자기 나라를 지킬 수 있을 거라 생각해요.

But just tonight, a funny thing happened. I got an email from the young lady in the picture, which translated like this:

Hello. I'm the girl who wore the gray dress with permed hair.

And my boyfriend was the guy with the white t-shirt and the really short buzz cut -

We couldn't find the picture on the site or if you uploaded them.

Actually, my boyfriend went off to do his military service last week on Tuesday the 4th.

That's why my boyfriend's hair was so short that day.

So I'm sending you this mail,

because whether or not the pictures of us together turned out well,

I was wondering if you could send the pictures to me.

I'll wait for your reply.

Wow – that really tugs at the heartstrings. Actually, these pictures came out really well – one of the best sets we've taken so far – but we were waiting to finish our Ewha series and also wanted to make sure we had time to write great text to go with it. And it is a portrait set that actually made us happy to make – seeing such earnest and eager love like that actually put us in a better mood and was a real pleasure to shoot. And I do remember telling them that this would be a great memento – I just had no idea how much so.

So what we'd like to tell this young couple is to not worry: one doesn't see this kind of deep love expressed so clearly in pictures like this, as it's literally written all over their faces. For the young man in the picture, you should go serve your country without any worries, as we really believe that this young lady will be waiting for you when you return.

And to the young lady, we hope these pictures will make the long wait a bit more bearable. Good luck to both of you!

우리 이대 근처에 있었는데 졸업날였어요. 우연히 지나간 여자를 봤는데 특이한 아주 하이 하이힐을 신고 있었고 샾한 원피스를 입고 있었고 가방도 이쁜 거예요. 그리고 그냥 걸어가는 거아니고 진짜 흘러가는 것처럼 지나간 거예요. 그래서 당연히 우리 패션 인터퓨와 촬영 신청했죠!

We were in the Ewha area for graduation day when we spotted someone who, at first glance, seemed pretty normal; yet, to those who pay attention to fashion, there was something peculiar about the young lady passing by. Her dress was nice, as was the cute little purse she had to match it. But it's not too often you find someone sporting 13 cm (5-inch) heels and still able to not only walk in them, but carry it off well!

요즘에 한국에서는 하이힐들이 높은 편이지만 사진에서 나온 힐은 좀 특별하죠? 그래서 이 언니를 잡고 찍었는데 얘기를 조금 나누었어요. 13센티이고 그리고 그냥 신으면 키가 높게 되기 뿐만아니라 ㅇ주 높은 힐을 되게 좋아한다고 하셨네요. 그리고 이 언니의 눈이 청확한 것같아요. 안젤리나 졸리가 비슷한 것도 있으니까요. 아니면 전설적인 베티 페이지? 사실 이 신발을 보면 그런 생각났어요.

Korean heels are high these days, but it's rare to see heels this high. So we decided to ask her to pose for a shot, since her choice in shoes seemed quite particular. Her heels reminded us of those worn by Bettie Page, in terms of shape, style, and height.

근데 이 한국 버전은 조금 한국화된거죠. 미국만큼 '섹시'한 느낌을 좀 줄이기를 위해 리븐을 추가한 거고 앞코도 좀 넓이 나오고 rounded이예요. 아무리 높아도 일반 여성들이 신은 하이힐은 조금 '귀여움'의 중심이예요.

Our fashionista's heels are not, of course, nearly 7 inches, and they are quite Koreanized with a cute bow, which sort of cancels some of the "naughty" feel of the shoe, which otherwise might be a bit too sexy for everyday use.

그리고! 오해하지 말아요! 이 언니는 베티 페이지처럼 '노티'하신 것아니예요. 착하신 이대에서 성악 전공하시는 젊은 singer이예요! 베티 페이지이랑 공동점은 신발만이예요. 좋은 거죠? 착한 학생인데 룩은 귀여운데 섹시한 포인트 딱 하나! 다른 식으로 해석하면 현대 이런바 '달페미니즘'의 시대에서는 똑똑하고 동립적인 여성들이 선택해서 아주 여성스럽거나 세시하게 하는 건 더이상 모순아니라고 생각하는 거예요.

But don't get the wrong idea! This "Bettie Page" is not naughty, but quite nice – in fact, a proper young lady who is a classical vocal major at Ewha Women's University, and for whom arts and music are her main inspiration. She only shares Bettie's killer taste in shoes and the "post-feminist" sense of being able to both smart as well as sexy.

근데 우리 '베티' 언니는 자기 발 건강을 위해 이런 신발 가끔씩만 신기 바래요. 그렇게 건강을 잘 지키면 실제로 한국의 베티 페이지가 되시는 것아니고 한국의 '넥스트 조수미'가 될 수 있겠죠? 보통 가수들의 힘이 횡격막에서 나온다고 해요. 근데 스타일이 띄어가는 가수는 하이힐에서도 나오는 것아닌가 싶어요, 이 언니를 보니까. 앤젤리나 졸리도 그렇게 파워를 생기는 것아닌가요? ㅋㅋㅋ

일단 언니한테 good luck!

We just hope that our "Bettie" keeps her feet healthy by saving the 13 cm heels for special occasions, and we wish her luck in becoming not actually Korea's next Bettie Page, but perhaps the next Jo Sumi? People often wonder where singing divas get their energy; some say it's in the spirit, while others simply remind us that the singer's power lies in the diaphragm. Perhaps they never thought about the power of 5-inch heels? If that's the case, then our Fabulous Fashionista is already well on her way to stardom!
Angelina Jolie would think so!

우리 "길거리 스타일" 컬럼은 개인의 패션 선택만 벤치마킹 하는 것이아니라, 차라리 대표적인 길거리에서 보일 수 있는 패션 장르를 잡으려고 해요.

"Street Styles" tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

여기 젊은 이대학생 언니들, 제대로 쿨하고 똑똑하고 감각 있는데요? 우리는 이 세명의 캐쥬얼하면서도 스타일리쉬한 감각을 놓치지 않은 룩에 반해 언니들을 멈춰세웠어요. 오늘의 대세는 스키니진인가 보군요. 하지만 각각 다른 조화를 이루고 있어요. 어떤 인상이 팍팍 꼳히죠? 왼쪽에 있는 언니는 귀엽고 캐쥬얼한, 생기발랄한 룩을 추구하고 있네요. 몸에 꽉 피트되는 티셔츠가 검정색 데님 팬츠와 발랄한 단발머리에 잘 어울리는 군요! 가운데 언니는 타이트한 진에 루즈하면서도 여성스러운 상의로 매치해 주었네요. 오른쪽 언니는 제대로 캐쥬얼한 스타일이네요. 루즈한 상의에 세명 중 제일 타이트한 진을 입고, 스포티한 운동화를 매치시켰어요!

These young ladies of Ewha were crazy cool, crazy smart, and crazy fashionable. We stopped them after the three of them caught our eye with their casual but stylish individual looks. Skinny jeans are definitely the common denominator here, but each part of a different ensemble. What am I feeling? With the girl on the left, a cute but casual, perky look, in which the tighter t-shirt goes well with the denim black pants and tomboyish bob cut; in the center, a tighter set of jeans to go with a looser, more feminine top; on the right, a cooly casual, very loose top to go with the tightest jeans of them all, but dressed down with sporty sneaks.

와우~ 정말로 신발이 전체적인 느낌을 만드는군요! 왼쪽의 무광 펌프스는 말광량이스러운 언니의 여성스러운 면을 지켜주면서 확실히 그녀의 톰보이룩을 완성시키는 데요, (오른쪽 처럼 스니커즈를 매치 시켰으면 완전히 다른 룩을 선보였을 거예요!) 반면에 꽤 키가 큰 가운데 언니는 비슷한 높이의 힐을 신으면서 또 다른 스타일을 제시합니다. 대게 한국의 키큰 여성들은 거의 플랫에 가까운 힐을 신는데 특히 키가 5′8 정도 된다면 말이죠! 키 큰 언니가 선택한 크림색의 힐은 자체적으로도 눈길을 끄네요. 오른쪽 언니는 왼쪽언니와 신발을 바꿔서 매치시켰다면 완전히 정반대의 룩을 선보였을 거예요. 루즈한 상의와 상당히 타이트한 하의가 펌프스랑 매치된다면 정말 다르게 보였을 테니까요. 양 끝의 두 언니들은 서로 흥미로운 대조를 이루고 있네요!

Indeed, the shoes make the outfit, and the less flashy pumps on the left definitely round out her tomboyish look by keeping her on the femme side of the fence (the sneaker on the right would have completely changed her look), while the quite tall girl in the middle is making a different statement by wearing heels of a similar height, since often, tall women in Korea tend to keep the heels low-to-flats, especially when they get in the range of 5′8 or so, as she did, while the cream color definitely brings attention to themselves; the girl on the right would also have the complete opposite look if she switched shoes with the girl on the left, since that loose top and very tight bottom would look totally different with pumps. The two girls on either side are an interesting counterpoint to one another.

그리고 똑부러지게 멋진 룩은 언니들 각각의 개성과 스타일과도 딱 들어 맞네요. 이 젊은 2학년 언니들은 모두 이화여자대학교의 국제 학술 프로그램에 참가한다고 합니다. "학교 안의 학교" 컨셉의 모든 강의가 영어로 진행되고 국제적 특성이 주안점 된 새로운 프로그램이라고 해요.

모든 사진찍는 것과 한국어로 인터뷰를 마친 후 이 젊은 숙녀분들은 꽤나 (제 기억으론 거의 원어민 수준;;) 영어를 할 줄 안다고 밝혔는데, 전 농담으로 처음부터 말해줘야 했었다고 했죠. 이분들 영어로 운영되는 학교간 학생 간행물 중에 가장 저명한 곳에 참여하고 있답니다 - 가운데 언니가 짱이래요 (비록 그다지 놀랍진 않지만!) www.vistazine.com에 가서 그들에 대해 알아보세요! 어떤 일을 하는지 까지요!

아마도 같이 일 할 학생 칼럼리스트를 구할수 있었을 지도 몰라요! 만약 모든 걸들이 오들 만난 언니들 처럼 똑부러지고 트렌드의 민감하다면 우리야말로 영광이죠!

바로 그거야~ 언니들, 화이팅!

And their smart and snappy looks do match their personalities. These young women all happen to be 2nd-years in the Division of International Studies program at Ewha Women's University. This is a new program that is like a school within a school, where classes are conducted in English, and an extremely international emphasis is central.

After going through the entire shooting and interviewing process in Korean, these young ladies revealed themselves to be quite capable – near native level, from what I remember! – speakers of English. I joked with them that they should have told me from the beginning!

They are also part of one of the most successful interscholastic student publications run in English – of which the girl in the center is the head (not really surprising, though!). Go check them out at www.vistazine.com and see what they're about.

Perhaps we could get some student columnists to work with? If all the girls are as smart and hip as the ones we met that day, the honor will be all ours.

"Fabulous Fashionistas" 컬럼에서는 서울의 뛰어난 멋쟁이들을 소개해 드립니다. 여기서 "멋"이란 어떠한 유행을 의미하는 것이나 비싼 명품 아이템을 자랑스럽게 가지고 있는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 자기 자신의 패션 스타일을 특별히 잘 보여주는 사람, 창조적인 코디로 눈에 확 띄는 사람, 그런 분들을 이 컬럼에서 만나보실 수 있습니다.

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don't choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designer labels attached to their bodies, but because they've managed to create their own unique style that one can't simply pass by without wanting to remember.

사실 나 레깅 싫어하거든요. 80년대가 죽었을 때 좋다고 생각했고 80년대 리바이벌이 시작했을 때는 너무 속상했어요. 내가 80년대를 생각하면 레깅, 젤리슈즈, 그리고 차가운 써준 메모로 내 중학생의 순진한 마음을 찢어버린 멜리사ㅇㅇ이란 사람을 생각난다. 안돼애애애애!

앗. 죄송해요. 너무 개인적인 얘기하니까요. 내 마음이 아직도 정리 안됐나봐요. ㅋㅋ 근데 매 말 이해하죠? 그 만큼 레깅을 싫단 말이예요! 근데 저 학생 봤던이 인정해야 한 거이었어요: 가끔…멋일 때가…있…네요. 저 학생이 자기 캐쥬얼한 스타일 찾았고 코디 너무 잘했어요. 안그랬으면 어떻게 그 레깅이 멋지다고 생각할 수 있겠나요? 신발하고…반바지…스카프…너무…퍼펙트. 노오오오오오우우우!!!

OK. Normally, I don't like leggings. The 80's died, and I like them dead. Leggings that only go partially into the shoe – stirrups, yuck! – I hate even worse. When I think of stirrups, I think of jelly shoes, the roller skating rink, and little Melissa such-and-such breaking my middle school heart with a coolly cruel note. Arrrrrgh!

I apologize. These are my personal issues, and I still need to deal with them. Still, it makes clear how much I dislike any suggestions of stirrups and leggings and such, which have been back in fashion for some time. Grrrr. That being said, somehow, this young lady was so funkily well-coordinated that I had to begrudgingly admit that they looked good on her.

쉬운 것처럼 이렇게 멋지게 옷을 입고 나오는 건 어려운 일이죠. 그리고 이번 겨울에 '옥스포드'구두 트렌드가 들어온다면서요. 제 생각엔 옥스포드는 한국에 그대로 들어오기 힘들 거라고 생각하는데 (아무래도 대부분 한국여성들이 너무 여성스럽게 입는 거라서) 좀 한국화되가지고 딱 이렇게 나오는 걸 상상돼요. 심플하면서, 한국여성들이 알고 있는 플랫슈즈이고 칼색이나 검정색으로 옥스포드처럼 캐쥬얼하게 너올 것같아요. 이 학생이 그렇게 패션 리더이라고 하는 거예요. 근데 이번 겨울에 한국여성들이 이 패션리더한테 좋은 레깅코디를 배웠으면 좋겠네요. 재발…하나님의 이름으로…레깅과 샌들을 신고 다니지 말아라줘요…재발!

She makes looking casual look easy, but she definitely put thought into what she was wearing. She also seems like the precursor of that oxfords trend they say is coming; I think it will hit the Korean streets looking preppie, brown or black flats, and a lot like the shoes she's wearing, as opposed to true oxfords. And I hope, for my sanity's sake, that more women will intelligently coordinate and use leggings, unlike some of the stuff I saw last season. Please, for the love of all that's holy, no more leggings with sandals! Please!!!

우리 멋쟁이 이대학생이 아시는 것같아요. 그런 식으로 레깅이나 긴 양말을 신으면 좀 웃기죠? 코디 소심하게 해야 하는 것 - 그런 레깅/양말이랑.

I think our fashiontastic Ewha undergrad knows – wearing leggings and stocking that way just looks funny. You have to coordinate carefully, right?

그럼! 아시죠! ㅋㅋㅋ 그리고 캐메라를 액세서리로 들고다니는 룩이…딱이야! 요즘에 카메라가 바로 액세서리가 됐는데 다른 여성보다 너무 자연스럽게 하시네요! 나이스!

Yeah, she knows! And way to rock the camera-as-fashion-accessory! Many Korean girls are doing these days, but she's really got it down. Work it!
