도로시 남을 알죠? 알잖아요 — TV에 나오는 귀여운 베레모를 쓰는 그녀! 서울 시청에 있는 서울파이낸스센터에 지난 주 금요일날에 (9월 19일) 첫 패션쇼를 진행했어요. 응, 디자이너로도 일을 하시죠. 몰랐죠?

Do you know Dorothy Nam? You know, the cute lady on TV with the hat! She had her first fashion show last Friday, September 19th, in the Seoul Finance Center in City Hall. Yes, she’s also a designer!

D~style 패션쇼는 국내 신예 아티스트와 스타강사 도로시 남과의 만남이다.현재 신진 아티스트 모임인 stART-ing에 소속된 20여명의 아티스트들이 EBS와 아리랑 영어강사로 유명한 도로시 남과 공동으로 새로운 디자인의 세계를 펼쳐보일 예정이다. 밝고 화사로운 빨강/핑크 계열의 의상으로 유명한 도로시 남과 국내 아티스트들의 작품이 앙상블을 이룰 이번 패션쇼는 한마디로 ‘입는 예술‘(ART2wear!)이라고 할 수 있다.

An Exhibition of 20~23 artists who are members of a stART-ing artists up on the rise made up of Korean artists with Korean artworks. In Collaboration with a Korean-American, well known as the “EBS/Arirang English teacher” debuting her first designs and Fashion show. Going from English to Designing! Dorothy Nam whom you may have recognized on English television with her smart bright red/ pink berets has collaborated with many Korean artists and have taken their artworks and designed them into fashion~ thus ART2wear!

“아름답고 날씬한 몸매를 가진 사람은 무엇을 입어도 멋져 보입니다. 그러나 한국에서 평균 이상의 사이즈를 입는 여성이 한국에서 사는 것은 커다란 도전입니다. 이제 도전은 시작되었습니다! 제 몸매가 약간 통통하다는 것을 저는 전혀 부끄러워하지 않습니다. 저는 그 이상이니까요! TV에 나오는 대부분의 여성들보다 통통한 몸매를 지녔기 때문에 텔레비전에 나선다는 건 정말 힘든 도전입니다. 모두들 제가 몸무게를 줄이기를 희망했습니다. 라디오 담당자만 빼놓구요… 이쪽 세계에서 통통하다는 것은 특히 여성으로서는 꽤 불리한 점이었습니다. 이번 패션쇼는 제게 큰 용기가 필요한 결정이었습니다. 그렇지만 저도 예쁘고 아름다운 옷을 입고 싶었고 게다가 저는 컬러풀한 옷을 참 좋아합니다!” 도로시의 말이다.

Dorothy says that, “Anyone who has a beautiful or a petite figure will look good in anything they put on, but the serious CHALLENGE was living a life here in Korea and being beyond the regular petite size and now that is where the research and challenge began!~ so, in the long run, I don’t mind being a bit chubby, there is just more of me! The true challenge and test was being on television and being a bit chunkier than most females on TV — almost every producer and writer and coordinator has hoped for me to lose weight. Except in radio. But there seems to always be a slight frown being a Korean female and a bit chunkier in this industry. This has challenged me to great lengths and I want to wear pretty and beautiful clothes as well and also I LOVE colors!”

그녀는 전 세계를 여행하며 320개 도시를 방문하였으며 그러한 여행 경험은 디자인에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 또한 그녀는 국내 신예 아티스트들의 도움으로 그녀의 퓨전 감각과 한국 미술을 디자인에 접목시킬 수 있었다. 한복도 디자인하고 싶었지만 아쉽게도 이번 패션쇼에는 선보이지 못해서 아쉽다는 그녀는 국내 아티스트들의 작품을 소재로 다양한 색채의 세계를 펼칠 예정이다.

Also mentioning that many of her style and creativity comes from her travels around the world, visiting over 320 cities in many countries during her lifetime so far has influenced many of her designs. So for my first debut I had the chance to show my design abilities along w/ some wonderful great up and rising artists in Korea which allowed me to enter my fusion growing ups and also the Korean art into my clothing as well. I love to design with the Korean Hanboks but this was a chance I wanted to also try as my debut working along with Korean art and artists and of course COLOR into our lives.

There were indeed a lot of different styles to be seen, and a diversity of models. Here’s a model who’s a true beginner, but looks like she has what it takes!

아 — 어깨. 한국에서 너무나 야한 어깨. 한국에서는 어깨, 가슴을 노출하면 대게 야하다고 생각하잖아요. 웃기는 건 미국인의 기분으로 드레스/치마는 너무 짧은데. 보통 한국사람들이 미국은 ‘야하다’고 생각하지만 ‘왜 그렇게 생각하냐’고 물어보면 ‘그렇게 영화/TV에서 나온다’고 할 거예요. 근데 사실 내가 봤을 때 미국에서는 뭐 어깨/가슴을 조금 노출하면 하나도 야하다고 생각안하는데 우리는 대부분 치마길이 좀 더 길어요. 한국은 반대로 생각하는 거고. 진짜 평생동안 겨울에 미니스커트 입는 걸 한국에서 처음 봤어요. 상상도 못 했던일었죠.

Ah, the shoulders. The racy, exposed shoulder is one thing that Koreans have traditionally worried quite a bit about, and still make a good bit of fashion effort to cover up, or at least be modest about. Of course, many Koreans think Americans are the wild and crazy dressers, and most specifically, dress very “sexy” — but I think that’s the result of the Hollywood image of America. Only in fantasyland can there be a group of like 8 “Friends” who don’t have a single person of color in the mix in NEW YORK CITY, or can “Sex and the City” even seem like its even physically possible to keep up. But skirts and hemlines in general are generally higher here, and the first time in my life I’d ever seen a micro-mini skirt in the dead of winter was in Korea. Such a thing was scarcely imaginable before coming to Korea.

이 걸 처음 봤어요. 밑에서 나오는 어깨커버? 와우. 한국에서는 특히 원피스를 입는 경우에 이런 것들이 흔한 거예요.

This was the first time I’d seen anything like this: a shoulder cover coming from under the dress. Such ideas are fairly common in a lot of women’s fashion here, and is an imperative on many dresses.
