Here are five shots that don’t really go together in any way — they’re just shots I thought would be fun to discuss while I continue to organize a boatload of pictures.

The question is: Given that these are pretty “Korean” styles, would you say that these are essentially bad looks — derivative or not — or can they be just thought of as belonging to a totally different aesthetic altogether?

You guys are gonna git me for this one, I think. Chew on this. Hehe.

I swear I saw this same minidress three times just walking down the street in Insadong.

High waists and buttons are in, as seem to be suspender dresses and white t-shirts.

Earth tones and brighter natural colors seem to be in, too.

(Business Card Holders — A Must-have Accessory)

In a country where asking someone’s name usually involves the exchange of business cards (or “name cards” in Konglish) having an interesting business card holder is:

– A necessity
– A way to show your personality
– An accessory like a watch
– A possible topic of conversation….(Wow! Cool card holder?? Where’d you get it? Blah…Blah)

Frank Lloyd Wright Design Business Card Holders

Avery Copy

I recently bought a really unique and styling business card holder for 40,000 won ($42.00 USD). You might recognize the design from famous iconic American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. This design is called Avery Coonley from an art glass window from the Avery Coonley Playside Theatre in Illinois (USA). Being an Illinois native myself, I was ecstatic to have a business card holder that showed a part of my heritage as well as my personality. ^^ Every time I whip out my card holder, people compliment me on it and ask me where I bought it.

The Store / 상점

I bought it at this store:

Storefront Copy

It’s called Kawa (02-3210-1009) and it’s located on the ground floor (near the place where you can paint your own coffee cup or plate) in the Ssamjigil(쌈짓길) outdoor shopping mall in Insa-dong.

The shop manager, Eu-Gene Chang (장 유 진), is very friendly and gives great customer service. Her English is also pretty good if you have any questions. Most business card holders range from 20,000-45,000 won ($22.00-$47.00 USD) and are made out of gold, silver, leather, or nickel-plated. Mine is nickel-plated.

At first, I was worried that the exterior would tarnish with touch and age, but they assured me that it wouldn’t.

Wanja Copy

Kawa also sells business card holders with traditional Korean designs which are also very cool. This is the most popular Korean design, called Wanja, and it comes in silver or gold for 35,000 won ($37.00 USD). This symbol is a traditional Buddhist symbol and I’ve noticed it at the bus stop or subway station.

So take a trip down to Insa-dong and get yourself a good quality and unique business card holder!

“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

IMG_7444 copy

Street portraiture is sometimes incredibly hard, sometimes surprisingly easy. After a long trip through Insadong, we had actually finished and sat down for a snack when I saw the perfect subject: stylish, in mode, and yet distinctively Korean. Black-and-white can often be boring, but she made it interesting. And she had a look that said, “I’m fly and I know it,” but I’ve learned to ask for the picture, even if I feel rejection is certain. And sometimes, I get lucky.

IMG_7436 copyIMG_7448 copy

What originally caught my eye was not just the clothes, but the cake boxes, her walk, her attitude. And loved the shoes. That section of Myeongdong was also covered in freshly-fallen leaves, so it seemed a perfect place to shoot, especially with this woman who seemed to be waiting for someone to arrive.

IMG_7433 copy

It turns out that she’s a stylist, as well as styl-ish. Since I photograph on the street, and am speaking with people I don’t at all know, of course I find it difficult to approach some people, especially those who look at first glance like they’re surely not going to pose for a picture. The best rule I’ve ever heard relevant to this situation is, “It can’t hurt to ask.” Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised.

IMG_7451 copy

These shoes are red on the bottoms, but not Louboutin. Domestic brands have picked up the signature red bottoms and one can find them pretty often these days on the more sharply-dressed. What I like about her style is the fact that it’s trendy, but not common – there’s something about the way she wears it that exudes personality, confidence, and a certain amount of sexiness that adds up to style, baby, style. And that’s what fashion’s all about.

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

--- Coco Chanel (1883–1971)
