I’m going to be on TV! Tomorrow, Friday the 21st I’ll be in the pilot episode of WaeinGudan on MBC at 6:50pm. The show features celebrities Kim Gura, Han Seongju, Lee Byungjin and Han Yeong as teachers and Ji Sangnyeol as principal. I’m one of 10 foreigners divided up into 2 classes. We are schooled in Korean culture and then we battle it out in silly quiz games. I use my English name, Peter, on the show.

The clothes I wore on the show are all mine except for the black sweater vest. If the show does well and gets picked up, they said they would be handling wardrobe more.

“The Fashion Diaries” are columns produced by real people wearing real fashions. Our fashion diarists don’t merely follow current trends, but also integrate them into their own particular styles as not mere fashion followers, but style leaders. They record what they wear every day, as well as what they buy, or any changes they make to their look. They have opened their purses, closets, and vanities to us, allowing us an intimate and transparent look into real fashion that we rarely get to see. If you need fashion hints, or are tracking trends, or just want to vicariously experience another fashion lifestyle, you have come to the right place. Visiting my master’s first Gicheon dojang in the US /

In May, I visited friends and family in the United States.

Q: What’s more American than guns? /

A: Shopping (Thanks, Go!) / 답: 쇼핑 (Go, 고마워!)

I got a leather money clip in the US. Definitely more pimpin’ than having a bulky wallet to sit on. It’s magnetic, though, so I want to get a metal clip that I can keep my credit and subway cards in.

Back in Korea, I’ve been spending a lot of time working on my own plans and goals this summer rather than going out. One night in June that I did go out, I hit Flower and Santa bars in Daejeon with a few good friends. This print t-shirt that a friend gave me has become one of my favorites.

I’ve decided to go to martial arts every morning and only do Crossfit on the weekends. This keeps me on a regular schedule of getting up at 5 am. Insane, I know.

My band members are moving to Seoul this summer, so beginning in September I’ll be coming up to Seoul every weekend for band practice and to play shows. I think I’ll be more inspired in fashion going to Seoul often. Lately, I’ve been admiring ajumma fashion for how balls-out rock ‘n roll it is. I might be tempted to get some loud floral and animal prints if someone doesn’t stop me.

Beloved FMS Readers, my name is Sungwon. I’m mixed; half-Kyungsando-ian and half-Oklahomian. I grew up in the US and have been living in Daejeon for 4 years. I’m a PhD student at KAIST and I play bass in a progressive metal band called Dusk (myspace | cy club).

I also study the Korean martial arts Gicheon and Haedonggumdo and I do the exercise methodology called Crossfit (the actors for the movie 300 prepared for the movie doing exercise similar to Crossfit workouts).

Now I’m thinking of trying some modeling as well. All these parts of my identity affect the way I present myself to the world.

When I first came to Korea, I was very self-conscious about standing out as a foreigner and as a long-haired guy wearing scary metal t-shirts. Daejeon, especially, although a large city, doesn’t have the metropolitan feel of Seoul.

And at my school, most graduate students all wear the same bland outfits. Over the years, I’ve come to embrace being different and now I often enjoy flaunting it. But I’ve only gotten interested in fashion within the past year or so.

At first, it was because I became interested in how people treat you differently depending on the kind of image you present. Then a few months ago, Salsaqn from this very site gave me a makeover and I learned a lot about getting clothes that fit right and how to use accessories.

As you can see in these photos, recently I’ve started using bandanas and leather strings tied around my neck. I started doing that to add color and because I don’t have many nice necklaces yet. :P

사진을 보면 아시겠지만 최근에 내가 목에 반다나나 가죽줄을 많이 매고 다니고 있다. 처음에는 섹갈을 많이 써보고 싶고 목거리 예쁜것도 많이 없으니까. ^^;

04/18 Experimenting with nail polish /

I guess you could say my general look is Rocker, but I’ve been experimenting with my style a bit. I think it’s easier for me to experiment here in Korea than in the US. As a dreadlocked foreigner, I stand out anyway, so extra flair here and there won’t get me many more stares than usual.

I can also play around with more effeminate kinds of styles (including makeup like colored eye shadow and bright nail polish) without being beaten up for being gay or something like might happen in the backwoods of the good ol’ US of A.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures. My old camera finally broke and I’ve had to resort to whatever’s been available. I’ll be getting a decent camera soon. Now I have a challenge for you, dear reader. Leave a comment guessing my age. I’ll maybe buy you dinner if you guess right. ;)

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

--- Coco Chanel (1883–1971)

What is SEXY?

What is TALENT?

"I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing 'Funny Face' when I couldn't sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.”
