What’s your hobby? Is photography one of your hobbies? If so, let me ask you one more question, “What do you do with photography?”

취미가 무엇인가요? 혹시 사진 찍으시나요? 만약 그렇다면, 질문 한 가지 더 드리겠습니다. “사진으로 무얼 하시나요?”

Photography is a hobby but also a kind of art which is relatively achievable by anyone who has a camera, even if it is a disposable camera, and passion to press shutters at anything that piques an interest. Photography seems to be no longer a high culture affordable to only a few with money, time, and skills. The popularization of photography as an accessible form of artistic hobby is in line with a rise of the Cyworld, Korea’s largest online social networking service (like Facebook), and blogging.

사진은 취미이기도 하지만 하나의 예술이라고도 할 수 있습니다. 일회용 카메라라 할지라도 카메라만 있고 어느 것이든 나에게 흥미로운 것을 발견했을 때 셔터를 누를 수 있는 열정만 있다면 가능한 예술이지요. 사진은 더이상 돈, 시간, 재능이 있어야만 할 수 있는 하이 클래스 문화가 아닌 것 같습니다. 한국에서 사진 찍기가 누구나 다가갈 수 있는 예술적인 취미로 유행하게 된 건 싸이월드와 블로깅의 인기 덕분이기도 한 것 같습니다. 싸이월드는 페이스북처럼 한국의 가장 큰 온라인 네트워킹 사이트에요.

Everyone is qualified to be a photographer and set up a gallery of his or her own on their mini home pages or cyber blog pages. Many people with millenials at the lead started to exhibit gazillions of their photos featuring their distinctive lifestyles–as diverse and many as pictures of self-portraits (called sel-kah which are often extremely focused in), fancy cafes or food they enjoy in their luxury, friends and families, and everything. Those prolific photographers are mostly amateurs, the ones who merely want to show their tasteful or mundane lifestyle to the public.The photography boom is not an overnight vogue, and photography is an art that has smeared into a realm of ordinary people’s lives so naturally that it seems to become a common hobby that a lot of people appreciate today.

모두가 사진 작가가 될 수도 있고 미니 홈피나 블로그에 갤러리를 만들 수 있어요. 요새 20-30대를 주축으로 해서 많은 사람들이 수도 없이 많은 사진을 전시하고 있는데, 이 사진들 모두 개성있는 삶을 보여주는 전시회 같아요.  셀카부터 럭셔리한 카페나 맛있어 보이는 음식들, 친구, 가족 등등 모든 것들이 사진에 담겨져 있으니까요. 그렇게 많은 사진들을 선보이는 사람들은 모두 아마추어입니다. 공개적으로 그들의 맛깔 나는 또는 평범한 일상을 보여주고 싶은 사람들이지요.사진 붐은 절대 하루 아침에 일어난 유행은 아니에요. 사진은 평범한 사람들의 일상 속에 쏘옥 스며든 하나의 예술이고, 그래서 그만큼 많은 사람들이 오늘날 즐기는 흔한 취미가 된 것 이죠.

Celebrities have added to this fever and reinforced a general perception of photography as a palatable hobby of “cool” people. One leading photographer is Doona Bae, who has gained increasing popularity among netizens for the pictures on her blog. She took photos of a diverse range of scenes she came across in her personal life as well as during her travels abroad. Finally she challenged herself and went on to publish a series of three photo essay books about London, Tokyo, and Seoul, each one every year in a row since 2006. Her communication with online audience through the blog photos must have been a great starting point and motivation for her to take further steps to entertain her fans in the offline space.

연예인들 또한 사진 찍기 열풍에 동참하였습니다. 연예인들의 활발한 사진 활동이 더욱더 사진을 “쿨”한 사람들의 색깔있는 취미로 알리는 것 같아요. 그 중에서 배두나 씨가 돋보이는 데요, 그녀는 블로그에 일상 사진, 여행 사진들을 올리면서 인기를 올리기도 했습니다. 마침내 그녀는 한 발짝 성큼 더 나아가 런던, 도쿄, 서울에서 찍은 여행 사진들을 모아 포토 에세이집을 냈습니다. 아마 그녀의 블로그 사진전이 배두나 씨를 프로페셔널 사진 작가로 일컬을 수 있는 시작점이 되지 않았나 생각합니다. 블로그를 넘어서 그녀는 오프라인에서도 더 많은 대중을 만나고 사진으로 소통하기 위해 전진한 것이죠.

Here’s another guy, FMS, who has devoted his 20’s and 30’s to capturing in lens the very fascinating things he, as a U.S. expat, encountered in Korea – the local people and their quotidien fashion on the street. Pushing his interest further along, he recently published his very first photo book featuring his latest photo works in the Seoul Fashion Week of 2008. He geared in this book all his relentless passion for street photography,shrewd sense of the “decisive moment” to take pictures, and ability to capture the naturalness in a non-boring way. These photos were already featured and received a great following on a fashion magazine FeetManSeoul where he is a master blogger and a chief editor.

여기 또 다른 사진작가 FMS가 있습니다. FMS는 미국에서 한국으로 건너와서 20-30대를 보내면서 한국에서 그가 경험한 이색적이고 흥미로운 것들을 카메라에 담았습니다. 그의 사진에 대한 열정과 흥미를 바탕으로 FMS도 또한 한 걸음 나아가 2008년 서울 패션 위크에서 찍은 긔의 사진들을 모아서 첫 번째 사진집을 출간하였습니다. 그는 이 책에서 거리 사진에 대한 끊임없는 열정과 “결정적 순간”을 알아볼 줄 아는 예리한 감각, 지루하지 않은 각도에서 자연스러움을 연출할 수 있는 능력을 유감없이 발휘했는데요. 그의 사진들은 이미 그가 운영하는 패션 블로그 FeetManSeoul 에서도 선보여서 많은 호응을 얻고 있어요.

Oddly enough, this intelligent Ivy League graduate and a Ph D. candidate aspiring to work in academia seems to be a driven activist to use photography not only just to share his interest but also to open up a sophisticated area open to all interested in fashion, photography, Seoul, or anything. He is very open to tell what he experiences and what he observes in Seoul with anyone through his good-witted columns and professional photos.

신기한 것 더 한 가지는 FMS는 아이비리그 출신에 박사 학위 과정을 밟고 있는 학자로서 사진으로 진정한 그의 흥미를 추구하고 그의 패션, 사진, 서울 등등의 어느 것에나 흥미를 같이 나란히 하는 사람들과 함께 공유하고 이야기할 수 있는 문화 공간을 만들었다는 데에 있습니다. 그는  유머가 살아있는 컬럼과 프로페셔널한 사진을 통해 서울에서 그가 겪는 일들, 관찰하는 모든 것들을 많은 사람들에게 보여주고 싶어합니다.

For the celebration of his very first photo book, FMS had a launching brunch party for the publication of his photo book, and has shown up as a rising photo-shooting star. He will also hold another launching party on upcoming May 16 (Mark your calendar now!), but this time it’s a Korean version. He invites anyone, regardless of nationality, interested in meeting him and his photo works.

그의 첫번째 사진집을 축하하기 위해 FMS는 런칭 파티를 열었고 신예 스타 사진 작가로 발돋움하는 것 같습니다. 그는 오는 5월 16일에 또 한번 런칭 파티를 여는데요 (달력에 메모해 두세요!), 이번에는 한국어 버전입니다! 국적 불문하고 그와 그의 사진 작업에 대해 흥미를 느끼는 모든 분들을 초대하고 있습니다.

His photo book will play a catalyst to further suggest what people can accomplish with photography. Now, “What do you do with photography?”

그의 사진집이 많은 사람들에게 사진으로 무엇을 이룰 수 있는가에 대해 알려줄 수 있는 좋은 계기가 될 것 같습니다. 자, 이제 “당신은 사진으로 무엇을 하시나요?”

어제 펜실베니아에 있는 킹 오브 프러시아 라는 쇼핑몰에 다녀왔어요. 여기 있는거는 미국에서 두번째로 큰 몰이라더군요! 어떻게 위치도 안좋은 펜실베니아에 그렇게 큰 체인이 생겼는지는 모르겠지만 무지무지 행복했어요! 마치 미국 대도시와 쇼핑에 눈을 뜬 기분이랄까! 어제 애버크롬비, 홀리스터, 아르마니 익스체인지 등등 여러 군데 돌아다녔는데 하나 눈에 확 띄는 스타일이 있어서 당장 feetmanseoul에 올려야겠다 라고 아이디어가 났지요!

Now that I am living in the U.S., I’ve got a chance to peep out into the styles on latest mode among American trend-setters. Yesterday, I went to the King of Prussia in Pennsylvania, the second biggest shopping mall branch in the States, and shopping there gave me an inspiration for this fashion forecasting article!

Daum에 텔레비존이나 네이버 해외 연예 뉴스 열심히 보는 사람들 알거에요~ 미국 할리우드 스타들 입는 스타일이 한국에서 몇 달있으면 유행이 되는거! 할리우드 패션만 따로 골라서 파는 온라인 쇼핑들도 많구, 그 스타일만 좋아하는 팬들도 많잖아요. 예를 들면, 얼마 전 끝났던 커피프린스 1호점에서 채정안 씨가 입고 나왔던 스타일~소매를 반쯤 대충 접은 하얀 셔츠하고 회색 계통의 스키니 진이나 예쁜 비지니스 수트 느낌의 치마를 입고 다니는 거 봤죠? 그리고 미니스커트하고 밑에 레깅스 신는건 이제 거의 트렌드 축에도 못끼는 오래된 패션이 되었죠ㅋㅋ 그 두가지 스타일만 봐도 미국에서 진작에 유행이 되고 있었고 많은 사람들이 좋아했었던 거랍니다.

You know, when you look into an American fashion trend whether from paparazzi photos of Hollywood stars, you can have a slight idea of what’ll be going on in a couple of months in Korea. For example, you’ve seen a lot of people on the street or even stars on TV who wear white or colored shirts with half-rolled sleeves along with either skinny jeans or office-girl skirt. That style has already been in fad in the U.S. way before it became popular among Korean people. Moreover, have you worn a miniskirt with leggings under it? This style also swept across the American metropolitan cities, and now it’s almost a cliche among American fashion leaders.

제가 어제 킹오브프러시아 몰에 가서 딱 찜해놨었던 거는, 요 밑에 남색 스웨터 블라우스! 완전 큐트하면서도 나름 정장 느낌으로 차분하게 입을 수 있어서 매우 실용적이라고 생각해요~ (사실 저는 이뻐도 특정한 날에만 입을 수 있다거나 자주 입기 곤란한 옷은 사지 않거든요ㅋ) 애버크롬비가 한국에서는 아는 사람들만 아는 좀 고가 브랜드에요. 그래서 처음 듣는 분들도 있으시겠지만, 미국에서는 고등학생부터 30대까지 너무너무 많이 사랑을 받는 유명하고 인기있는 중고가 브랜드입니다!

저도 미국에 왔을때만 해도 애들이 된장녀 같이 애버크롬비, 홀리스터 이쁘다 라고 얘기하는데 도대체 왜 그렇게 유명한거야? 라고 친구한테 물어본적이 있었어요. 근데 백 번 말보다 한번 직접 보는게 낫다고, 어제 애버크롬비를 가서 그 스타일에 홀딱 반해버렸습니다~ 애버크롬비는 그 중에도 레이스 달린 탱크탑이나 가을에 들어서는 밑에 것 같은 니트 가디건을 많이 내놓고 있어요. 싸구려 티 절대 안나고, 너무 캐주얼하지 않으면서 고급스럽고 귀여운 느낌을 내는 스타일이 주류입니다.

밑에 스웨터 블라우스 무지 귀엽죠? 크게 파인 U 모양의 칼라 때문에 많이 파인 탱크탑을 밑에 입어도 되고 겨울에는 터틀넥을 입어도 전혀 매치가 어긋나 보이지 않을 것 같아요. 그리고 크로스로 보이는 밴드랑 뒷면은 리본으로 매서 여성스럽지만 부담스럽기 보다 귀엽고 캐주얼해요. 밴드가 또 바로 가슴 밑에 있다보니까 다리도 길어보여서 키가 커보이게 해주구요. 버튼도 딱 하나 달려서 오히려 단추가 여러개로 달린 교복 가디건 같은 느낌도 안주구요. 제 친구는 회색으로 샀는데, 저는 아무래도 남색이 무진장 이쁜거 같아요~

At Abercrombie and Fitch, I just came across this gorgeous navy sweater blouse with a “herringbone ribbon taping” and a single button under the chest. I love dark-colored cotten-knit sweaters because they will make you look not only neat and dignified but also cute at the same time–besides, slim. The sleeves are long enough to barely cover your upper two thirds of your arms. There are also kind of similar types of this sweater blouse that have several buttons on the first-half top and band around the chest line so they will make you look pretty much tall.

미국 사람들 일반적으로 옷 못입는 줄 알았는데, 이런 이쁜 브랜드 옷들 보니까 무시 못하겠어요. 이 옷 보고 매우 끌리지 않나요? 몇 달 후에 한국 시장에 이런 스타일 유행할 거 같아요. 미리 체크하고, 찜해두어 보아요!

The King of Prussia has a varied range of clothes shops from Burberry to H&M. But I could see this style of sweater blouse is now in almost every store and is trying to become a must-have item for women in their 20s to 30s. I expect that many Koreans would be so much tempted to put on this adorable sweater blouse in a moment this fall!

우리 “길거리 스타일” 컬럼은 개인의 패션 선택만 벤치마킁하는 것아니라, 찰라리 대표적인 길거리에서 보일 수 있는 패션 장르를 잡으려고 해요.

“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

한 눈에 띄는 원색 블루 티, 컬리 뱅에 바가지 머리, 부엉이 안경, 그리고 스키니진까지!

이 클래식 스타일이 다시 돌아오나요? 너무너무 맘에 듭니다! 명동에서도 한 눈에 튈 수 밖에 없는 스타일을 소화할 수 있는 분이 또 있을까요?!

여기서 주목할 것은 대비!

눈이 아플정도로 뚜렷한 원색과 검은색의 대비가 촌스럽기 보다는 현대적으로 세련되 보이네요. 롱티만 원색이고, 다른 모든 아이템은–롱티 안에 입은 홀터탑, 바지, 가방, 플랫 슈즈, 그리고 안경까지–검정색이잖아요. 두 가지 색만 있어서 옷이 싸구려나 촌스러워 보이지 않고 깔끔하고 복고적인 느낌을 주네요ㅋ

또, 삐죽거리지 않고 컬리한 헤어스타일이 얌전하고 구식이어 보일 수 있지만 옷과의 대비 때문에 오히려 더 스타일리쉬 해보이는걸요. 저 머리를 하면 왠지 꼭 땡땡이 무늬 원피스를 입어야 할 것 같은데 이렇게 캐주얼한 큰 티와 스키니 진을 입어도 잘 어울리는군요~

The 80’s classic style is coming back to the streets of Myeongdong, one of the fashion centers of Seoul! Who else can represent the style exactly as it should be, in an anachronistic but fabulous way? This is my kind of style!

Let me say that her style is a study in contrast itself!

1) Colors

It’s too hard to say that this is an old-fashioned 80’s style, because the colors are not motley–not jumbled up with a variety of colors, but just a pair of primary blue and achromatic black. A long, blue T-shirt rimmed with a little bit of neon yellow green color and black halterneck, skinny jeans, flat sneakers, owly glasses and bag–that’s a smart match!

2) Hair

Her bob cuts and curled bangs look more chic than out of date when the style is matched with casual, catchy outfits. I had thought that bob cuts best go with a dotted robe and heels, but not here! She is showing how bob cuts can come into fashion again, in this 21st century, casual, street-fashion way.

또 하나 마음에 드는것! 요 해리포터 안경입니다~

일명 부엉이 안경인데, 안경에 줄까지 달려있어서 어떻게 보면 옛날 학교 사감 선생님이 꼭 쓰실 것 같네요ㅋ (아님 김구선생님이 쓰셨을래나?;) 이런 복고풍의 안경, 어울리기 쉽지 않은데 옷의 느낌이랑 아주 잘 맞아요~ 해리포터 안경 쓰면 뭔가 날카로워 보이면서 둥근 안경테 때문에 귀엽고, 벗으면 목걸이 대신으로 쓸 수 있는 유용한 아이템이네요ㅋ (근데 도수는 있는건지요?)

What I love the most is her Harry Potter glasses!

The owly glasses give the conservative impression that they MUST be worn by an old, fussy boarding school headmistress or a white-haired, elderly man. But she looks rather cute with the glasses on as they form a balance with her non-conservative outfits. Whether she puts them on or not, the HP glasses are a smart item to go with!

거의 투명하고 가벼운 색조화장을 해서 화려한 색깔의 옷에 잘 맞네요ㅋ 언니 센스 굿!

And you have to check out her makeup as well. You’d better put on a light or almost non-colored makeup if you are to show off your 80’s catchy style.

여기 이번 달 새로 시작하는 드라마 “아이 엠 샘” 주역들이 다 모였는데요! 재미있는 인기 배우들이 많이 모여서 기대가 되지만, 도저히 용납할 수 없는게 하나 있네요!

도대체 왜 좋은 신체조건을 보완할 생각은 하지 않고, 오히려 악화시키는거죠?이봐요, 라이언 군, 왜 그랬어요? 코디가 입혀준 거에요? 그 박스 민소매 티는 왜 입어서 키도 작아 보이고 숏다리처럼 보이게 한거에요? 얼굴을 너무 믿었던 건지, 아니면 자신의 긴 다리는 뭘 입어도 길어보인다 라는 자신감인건지-_-

 (사실 포즈가 더 패션을 악화시키는군요 -너무 딱딱해요~)

쪼끔 더 나아 보이는 가수 빅뱅의 TOP 군! 그대도 만만치 않은 거인 사이즈의 셔츠를 입어서 숏다리 처럼 보입니다~ 다만 아주 “쪼끔” 더 낫다고 하는 이유는 까만 자켓의 단추를 닫아서 허리가 어디있는지를 보여주어서 입니다! 단추마저 안했다면, 헐렁한 아버지 양복, 아버지 와이셔츠 빌려 입고 온 느낌이 났을 거에요 ㅋㅋ
