Normally we here at fms love the fun fashion commentary at Go Fug Yourself. They’re cool, they’re hip, and they’re usually spot on. But we must cry foul at their foul call for Sandra Oh’s dress for the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards.
보통 우리 FMS 사람들은 Go Fug Yourself의 재미있는 패션 논평을 정말 좋아합니다. 멋지고, 앞서가며, 주로 딱 맞거든요. 하지만 우리는 Sandra 오의 SAG 시상식드레스에게 파울을 외친 Fug에게 파울을 외쳐야겠어요.
Korean stars have been wearing hanbok on the red carpet for some time now domestically, and some stars like Lee Young-ae have even showed it off at major international festivals like Cannes:
한국 스타들이 국내 레드카펫 위에서 한복을 입은 지는 꽤 됐어요. 그리고 이영애와 같은 몇 명의 스타들은 카느스와 같은 국제 이벤트에서 까지도 한복의 자태를 뽐냈어요.
So it’s good that the hanbok is getting some exposure. But not enough apparently, because somebody decided to rip poor Sandra a new one, comparing the stylized bow to the sort of thing you see tied around fancy cars in silly commercials during the holiday season. An apology soon followed, but still . . . is it a bad dress? My Gomishin-clad self saw it and immediately thought, “Dang, that’s a great modernized hanbok!” The colors and fabric are fabulous, and the stylized cut and drape still manages to be immediately identifiable as a hanbok, unlike some other modernized versions I’ve seen parading down runways. Yeah the bow is a little big in the first shot, but if we take a look at it from another angle:
따라서, 한복이 노출되는 것은 좋은 거에요. 하지만 충분하지 않나 봐요. 왜냐면 누군가가 Sandra에게 새로운 것을 만들어주기로 했거든요, 스타일화된 리본을 홀리데이 시즌에 나오는 우스운 광고 속 우아한 차들에게 묶여있을 법한 것들과 비교하면서 말이에요. 곧바로 사과는 했지만, 그래도… 정말 그것이 나쁜 드레스였나요?저는 보자마자 “와! 정말 멋지고 세련된 한복이다!” 라고 생각했어요. 색과 옷감도 멋지고, 스타일화된 컷과 드레이프는 그래도 한눈에 한복이라고 알아볼 수 있을 만해요, 보통 런웨이를 거닐던 다른 모던화된 한복들에 비해서요. 그래요, 솔직히 말해서 리본이 첫번째 사진에서는 조금 크네요. 하지만 다른 각도에서 보면…
That’s pretty darned elegant. And are those pockets??? I want a hanbok with pockets!!!
정말 우아하다고요! 그리고 저기 보이는 것들 주머니에요??? 와, 나도 주머니 있는 한복 갖고 싶어요!!!

Alright, it’s time to sit down and have a chat. Preferably inside, where it’s warm.
사랑하는 친구들: 같이 앉으고 얘기 좀 할까? 실내 되도록이면 따뜻한 장소?
You see, I’m starting to worry about your health. I know you spent all summer carefully controlling your sun exposure to make sure your legs had the perfect amount of summer glow. It’s good you work out to keep your gams in glamorous shape. The gentlemen on the streets have certainly appreciated all the effort you’ve put into making sure you look sharp in your miniskirts and short shorts.
왜냐하면 너의 건강에 대해 걱정 많이 하기 때문이에요. 여름동안 햇볕에 보기 좋게 태웠고 운동을 해서 다리가 아름다워졌죠. 그래서 미니나 반바지 입을 때 찐자 멋있게 보였어요. 길에 걸어가다가 남자들이 깊게 감사했겠요.
But my friends, there comes a time when you just have to admit you’re freezing your poor little butts off out there running around like it’s still twenty five degrees and sunny outside. It’s not. It’s freezing. Literally. If you don’t believe me, just look back a few posts ~ that’s snow!

Zero degrees outside, and you’re still running around with fifteen centimeters or more of bare leg. Oftentimes not even a sheer patterned stocking to shield your chilled knees!
기온이 영하지만 아직도 스타킹만큼 안써고 있어요? 아이고, 저런.
It’s more than just your health at risk, but your fashion cred. Just like in nature, fashion has seasons and the wise fashionista watches both. Micro-minis and shorts are perfect for summer, but when you’re running around in the same outfit six months later in the snow it’s no longer the perfect outfit. Yes, you’re still turning heads, but the looks you’re getting are not admiring your fine S-line. Instead, they’re questioning your sanity.
건강에다가 패션 센스를 위험에 맡기고 있어요. 자연처럼 파션에 계철 있고 똑똑한 사람들 두게 같이 이해해야 해요. 여름에 잛은 치마와 반바지는 아주 귀엽지만 6개월후에 계속 같은 스타일 입으면 안 예쁘을 것이다. 많은 사람들이 보고 있는데 S-line을 감사 안하겠어요. 오히러 제정신인지 의심하겠어요.
I’m not saying you have to dress like Mother Teresa or bundle up like you’re going on an mission to Antarctica. Let’s just keep in mind that there’s more than one way to look fashionable, many of which don’t involve freezing to death. And since looking good involves more than just the clothes, remember too that cold, dry winter air is rough on the skin. Chilblains and hypothermia just ain’t sexy. Put the short shorts and skirts on vacation for a while, and they’ll seem that much fresher when you bring them out again later ~ sometime next summer.
Mother Teresa나 남국 지방에 가기 위한 옷말고, 그냥 따뜻한 옷 입으면서 피부를 지킬수 있어요. 동상, 떨림과 저체온이 정말 섹시하지 않아요. 겨을에 여름 옷을 입지 마세요. 나중에 다시 입을때 얼마나 좋겠어요. . . 여름에 싱싱한 느낌을 기지고 있을 것이다!

우리 “길거리 스타일” 컬럼은 개인의 패션 선택만 벤치마킹 하는 것이아니라, 차라리 대표적인 길거리에서 보일 수 있는 패션 장르를 잡으려고 해요.
“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.
We caught up with this amazingly dressed trio coming out of a rock concert in Anam-dong, dressed in the most detailed, lovingly crafted punk styles we’ve seen in a long, long time. This is a whole new level of D-I-Y.
안암동의 락 콘서트 현장에서 나오신 분들 중에, 펑크로 제대로 차려 입으신 세 분들의 사진을 찍었습니다.
There’s a lot of pressure to conform in Korea, so it’s always refreshing to find people who can go beyond the conventional and find their own truly unique style, and these three have definitely got it! These are no punks-for-show or posers; this is everyday wear for these folks. They’re the real deal.
한국에서 튀는 복장을 입는데는 엄청난 심리적 압박을 느끼게 마련입니다. 그러다보니, 대중적인 스타일을 넘어, 자신만의 스타일대로 입고다니는 사람들을 찾는다는 것은 상당히 신선한 경험이라 할 수 있지요. 바로 여기 세 분이 그렇습니다. 이 분들은 공연을 하시는 분들도 아니고, 코스튬 플레이를 하고 계신 것도 아니랍니다.
An important part of the punk aestetic is the do-it-yourself, handmade look. This beautifully hand-painted No Brain shirt really catches the eye (and carries a loving message about the importance of family on the back^^), and the cat-shaped backpack had a suprisingly homey vibe. Customization is key, and the painting, embroidery, and buttons all go towards making this outfit utterly unique.
펑크룩에 있어서 중요한 부분은 자신이 원하는대로 꾸민다는 것입니다. 이분들은 정말 ‘지대로’ 입으셨습니다. 위의 No Brain을 그린 셔츠는 보는 이의 시선을 한 번에 잡아 끌지요. 그리고 뒤에는 가족 사랑의 중요성에 관한 메시지가 적혀있습니다. 뒤에 달린 고양이 가방은 저 분 뒤에 참 편하게 늘어져있는 느낌이었습니다. 자작품과 함께, 티셔츠의 그림, 뱃지 등의 아이템이 어우러져 매우 독특한 느낌이 듭니다.
Punk is the anti-fashion fashion, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it’s own special appeal. While deliberately bucking trends and going with extreme accessories designed to be transgressive and provocative (like their colored contact lenses and the many, many piercings they sport) they’ve still managed to be eye-catching.
펑크는 이른바 ‘anti-fashion’이라 하지만, 외관을 중시하지 않는다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 피어싱이나 커다란 팔찌처럼, 과하다 싶을 정도로 화려한 액세서리를 착용하거나, 기존의 트렌드와는 차별화된 모습으로 사람들의 시선을 집중시킵니다.
KISS-inspired makeup makes for a dramatic look, but that’s just what these two were aiming for. Also note the rips and shreds on that t-shirt ~ sexy, cool, and definitely not what the other girls are wearing out. It just makes these two that much more fashionable to be able to reference contemporary Korean women’s fashion while subverting it and using items like frilly skirts and fancy patterned stockings in different way.
KISS를 바탕으로 코디를 할 경우는 보통 드라마틱한 느낌을 주게 마련인데, 이 두 분이 의도하신 것이 바로 그것입니다. 찢어진 티셔츠와, 그 위에 그려진 그림을 보면, 웬만한 여자분들이 입으실만한 느낌은 아니죠.
Never mind the Bollocks, here’s some Sex Pistols accessories. The Sex Pistols are what first caught these girls ears, but their accessories are what caught our eye. That’s some heavy-duty leather, spikes, and chains!
화려한 무늬의 스타킹이나, 장식이 달린 스커트는 일반적인 여성복 패션과 대비됨으로써 두 분의 스타일을 더 돋보이게 합니다. 그리고, Sex Pistols의 이름이 들어간 액세서리도 보이네요. Sex Pistols는 이 아가씨들의 귀를 사로잡았을 것이고, 이 아가씨들의 액세서리는 보는 사람의 눈을 사로잡습니다.두꺼운 가죽에 찡과 체인도 달렸네요.
Tell me those aren’t the most fabulous printed stockings you’ve ever seen! Really, ladies, we ALL need a pair like that. And the stockings work as a nice bridge between some heavy-duty boots and the frilly lace and ribbons of the purple leopard-print skirt. That’s mixing it up with style. And it’s old OLD school, harkening back the coquettishness of British punk in the 1970′s. Altogether well played! Rock on!
가죽부츠와 보라색 표피스커트 사이에 스타킹을 신어주신 게 참 잘 어울리네요. 스타일을 더욱 돋보이게 만들어주는 느낌입니다. 마치 1970년대의 영국 펑크 스타일을 보는 느낌입니다. 앞으로도 멋진 모습 기대하겠습니다.
