One of my favorite actors, Bae Du-na, has published her second street photo book, called “At Play in Tokyo.” Her first was called “At Play in London” and both are the results of photos she’s taken on trips there. The recent work was the result of over 30 trips, and she took the time to take pictures. That’s the mark of a real photographer, no matter what other work you do.

I’d heard that Du-na was a photographer, but hadn’t seen her books. I’m going to try and make a trip over to the gallery, and also pick one of them up. Hopefully, they’ll be a lot better than the crap that Vogue produced this month. Her works looks like the result of her being a real street photographer, and not the hobbyist who does it in “free time.”

 2007 08 17 200708171513571111 1

Street photography isn’t just “hobby” work because of the fact that one does it obsessively. Even though Du-na is an actor, and has grueling schedules, is probably often exhausted, or just not in the mood to get up and go – on her more than 30 trips to Tokyo, she was always out and shooting when others were either sleeping in their hotel rooms, partying, or doing whatever stars and people of means do.

To me, that reeks of obsession. Like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, or Kim Ki-Chan. And that’s what you gotta have.

Oh, and one more thing: Girl, you look great in the minidress! A stylish street photographer – honestly, there weren’t many of those. Fabulous!

Congratulations, Du-na!

“Fabulous Fashionistas”

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don’t choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they’ve managed to create their own unique style that one can’t simply pass by without wanting to remember.

We were walking around Dongdaemun when we spotted the coolest reggae couple walking our way. You see a lot of young folks here dressed like a sub-culture groupie – rap, punk, or even J-pop – but it often looks superficial or even forced when it’s worn by the wrong person, or too self-consciously. This couple didn’t have that problem, and seemed as natural reggae devoteés as in any other place.

Img 2615 Copy-1Img 2617 Copy

And that hair! When I asked who did the extensions, the guy replied that he had done it himself. Now, that’s dedication.

Img 2621 Copy

A t-shirt with a unique design…

Gotta check the bag and shoes…they don’t match each other, but rather the somewhat “ethnic” purse in tandem with her upper body, and the blue/white sandals with the white jeans, obviously. Looking good!

Img 2596 CopyImg 2609 Copy-2

They don’t seem to be just following a trend, but are also mixing in this reggae look with items and fashion from Korea; and they’ve done a great job at making it natural and fabulous. It just really works, don’t you think?

For you English speakers out there, let me just say that you should watch the video first, before continuing on down with this text.

According to Chosun.com, LG pulled an interesting fast one on Netizens with its supposed rollout of a new commercial to feature lithe and lovely Kim Tae Hee promoting its new line of multi-colored phones; but when the commercial rolled out across across “UCC” (YouTube-like sites) channels and people watched the first video, they were greeted with a surprise of Austin Powerian proportions: “It’s a man, man!”

Actually, a male model still in high school, who bears a striking resemblance to Kim Tae Hee, who is, as you might know, not a man, man. Very funny stuff. And a bit confusing.

Er…umm…not that confusing, but…umm…

Is it weird that I think the impersonator is cuter than the original? Now, I’m really confused…

Street Styles: Summer Casual

Aug 20, 2007 Author: FMS | Filed under: Seoul Fashion Report, Shinchon, Street Styles

“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.

We were on our way out of Shinchon after doing some shooting when this young woman’s dress caught our eye, with its bright colors and somewhat ethnic style. We just liked it. When you factor in the bag, bracelets, and the sandals, it adds up to a natural feeling; especially the bracelets, since they are also pretty “ethnic” in design.

Img 1779 CopyImg 1778 Copy

In Korea, men tend to be a little more dressed down than women, who generally are dressed to impress wherever they go. The boyfriend in this picture is a casual kind of cool, whereas the girlfriend in this pair has definitely exerted more effort to define a “look” and a complete outfit. In any case, they look good together!

It’s pictures like this that make street photo worth doing, as hard as it is to make ends meet as a job. The picture above is interesting not so much because of the girl, but because of the ajussi to the right who was a bit startled to look up at this pretty risque woman walking by, and is caught looking at just the right moment. Technically, it’s not one of my strongest images (I wish I had caught all of the ajussi’s body, and it would have been nice if the man to the left hadn’t been there), but one worth looking at.

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."
