fashion is fetish is fabulous is fun is fantastic!
Welcome to the world of Yang Hee Deuk, where color and giddiness reign. His shows and clothes are continuously enthralling, and I look forward to them each Seoul Fashion Week. Here is a profile of Yang Hee Deuk from the Esquisse pamphlet handed at at SFW:
Heedeuk Yang launched Eye Sex in 2000. His work in centered in Hong Kong and Taiwan He began working there after he majored in the ’study of clothes’ in Japan. He participated in Hong Kong Fashion Week in 2003 and then Seoul Fashion Week last year. Heedeuk shows splendid Bohemian style under the theme “Cruise.”
Here’s the entire S/S 2009 show itself, in order. This is the first complete show we’re covering, and we’ve got many more to collate. So keep coming back, since like good food, it takes time to cook. And remember — even if a show’s not already written up, the pictures might be in our photo stream already (for example, Denise’s Song Jain photos are already up). All of our photos, including the ones below, are linked to a VERY high-resolution version, and are probably the highest-resolution, highest-quality photos related to Korean fashion or Seoul Fashion Week that you can get on the web. Our magazine cares about quality, which is why photos take a while to process, but if you wait, you won’t be disappointed.
Love the 60’s haircut and overdone eyelashes, and giddy, Austin Powers feel of the entire affair, a mood that the Abba soundtrack helped define, especially as the colors got brighter and the patterns wilder.
“Yeah, baby, YEAH!”
It’s getting ethnic up in here!
The party on the dance floor — set to Abba’s “Dancing Queen” — was truly nice. I liked the celebratory atmosphere, along with the way designer Yang really gave the audience a small slice of his personality and ended the show with the same flair that characterized it in the first place. Truly well-done.

“Go, go, you go, girl!”
We’re still collating and processing the pics from this show, but we wanted to give you an appetizer. She’s one of my favorite models from the shows, and really knows how to vogue it, show it, work it!
And Yang Hee Deuk is one of my favorite designers. He’s always very colorful, puts on a great show, and shows clothes that are truly interesting. And he seems to have retained a sense of fun that is just infectious. Go, Hee Deuk!

Live Blogging: Just watched Yang Hee Deuk’s show. It was AWESOME. The clothes were awesome. The models were AWESOME. That whole show was full of flair. AWESOME pictures later!
Back in 1995, before there was any “Korean Wave” or anyone other than Korean people listening to Korean music, and snowboarding gear was worn in the summer, there was Seo Taiji’s “Come Back Home.” This cultural moment was like the Beatles arrival in the US, except they brought “gangster” rap, not rock, to the Korean masses.
JYP!
But guess who wins the contest at the end? Pak Jin Young! He was always the true talent. Even then, with screaming middle school girls ready to sell their kidneys for Seo Taiji and the Boys, JYP was still in full effect. Fast forward 12 years…
“Tell Me, Tell Me, T-t-t-t-t-tell me…”
I guess real talent really doesn’t go out of style.
Yesterday, the mayor of Seoul and visiting fashion dignitaries from around the world had a sit-down talk to discuss how Seoul Fashion Week could be improved and how Seoul can best make itself into a “world fashion capital” and a “hub of Asian fashion” in the near future. Download the audio of the conversation here.
As you know, I was on KBS1’s “Love in Asia”, where they talked about my photography and this site (even though they didn’t display the site on air — doh!) We finally got it on YouTube, where you get to see the show without hassle. Thanks to AncientGoose, who put this up. Since YouTube won’t let you squeeze more then 10 minutes on at a time, here it is in 2 parts:
It was really funny to see this in Hongdae. You’ve seen the “Free Hugs” video campaign, right?
After that video, Korea got one of its own. And watching a people not really used to hugging or public displays of affection giving it out freely in the street was moving in its own way, I must say.
Everyone knows that people copy each other quite a bit here in Korea. So I was pretty disappointed to see this come to Korea and become commercialized. When you have scantily-clad “narrator-models” giving out “Free Hugs” to mostly old men who really, really enjoyed them, the sexual vibe just didn’t seem cool. Or the CGV employees I saw holding up neatly-printed “Free Hugs” signs in the lobby of theaters for their own advertising. I never saw anyone actually go up to get one, thank goodness. It was just too awkward and fake. Corporate suits sure know how to ruin a pure-hearted idea.
But despite the inherent awkwardness, seeing these middle school kids giving it a shot sure warmed the heart.
They’re cute, right? They’re like a “Free Hugs” brigade, no? But without being scary or threatening, of course. A love “brigade.” Too bad we don’t have any of those, like an “army of good intentions.” Now, that’s an army I wouldn’t mind sending anywhere in the world.
