We’re gonna write an in-depth article on the Gangnam Fashion Festival (GAFF), with the combined efforts of Erotic Orange and another photographer who is now working with us. But for now, we’ll just give you a few highlights from this festival, which highlighted Gangnam-gu as a special fashion district, and had events going on from last Wednesday until last night. The pic above is from a design student fashion show that was held on an outdoor runway — they also had a hanbok show, but the other photographer had that one, and those images are coming soon. I do like the fact that there were runways outside, and it allowed people to see fashion shows — from hanboks to student shows to Andre Kim — and really bring high fashion to everyday people. Isn’t that TRUE street fashion, after all?!
We also tried to catch the local flavor by grabbing street shots of interesting folks who had come to watch.
Here’s a model, who is trying out for Seoul Fashion Week as we speak, peacocking out and straight pimpin’!
More on these people — and others — later.
There were several fashion shows held indoors last week, with some decent shows — we were the only ones photographing attendees. Like The Sartorialist and many other sites that copy him, we think that fashion is defined as much by the people who watch the show as those who make them. That didn’t catch on until recently in Korea, and we were the first to do it here. Here’s an English instructor looking fabuloso!

Girls from the Incheon Practical Science High School’s Clothing Arts program.

Young ladies from the Fashion Design Department at Osan College.
Interestingly enough, the first day of fashion shows seemed to be full of students, especially from high schools and colleges with a fashion industry-related focus. And amongst the many students were a variety of trends and styles popular these days on the streets of Korea.
From cutesy pink…
To punkish hip-hop.
We even bumped into a couple young ladies who had been working backstage at Seo Yeong-su’s fashion show. Even in casual workclothes, they projected a style.
Love this shot. Check out the people in the back, and the designer shoe from the show in the baggie.
I even met show attendees at the bus stop…
Along with two Russian guys who really wanted their pic taken, too. They were busting out with the ajussi pimp style. They were actually so fly in their own way, I had to put it up. Pinstripes with pinstripes? Well, it worked. And it just seemed to go along with the flavor of that day, and fashion shooting in Kangnam. But that day wasn’t the pinnacle of the series of events…
What’s fashion without a little Andre Kim? [site] No matter what one says about him, the man’s looking good in his 70’s. And he’s paid his dues. So let him wear what he wants, I say!
And he was quite friendly as he struck poses for our camera. But beyond that…
The show was off the hook!
I’d never been to an André Kim fashion show, and frankly didn’t know what to expect. It’s a show, people. A full-on SHOW. He does not PLAY.
The ethnic dress-inspired styles were simply awesome.
And with André, you’ve gotta have some wedding dresses. Lovely!
And a star or two! Here’s the on-screen couple, Gi Tae-yeong and Lee Yu-ri, from left to right.
Flickr.com, 위 러브 유!
They added some drama and fun to the affair, and were a fun way to unite the male/female versions of all the different looks. And a perfect way to end the show (and this preview post)! And remember — all pictures can be expanded to their FULL size by clicking on any of them. Flickr ROCKS! So, until next time, we bid you ‘annyeong…’

O, Andre Kim, so fantastique, so scary. I get that he wears the space suit cos his body is not trim like it used to be but the rest of us peons can’t quite run with it XD Also, plastic surgery and the bizzare dye/toupees he rocks is not something the masses should aspire to.
Korean fashion is getting better, isn’t it? I love the English instructor dressed all equestrian style, though I would ditch the name brand bag and go for something a little funkier with a splash of color to make the whole look less staid. Her boots, to diiiiie for.
And even tho I adore skinnies and they’ll prolly be a mainstay in my wardrobe, I do think that Korean women’s legs are too skinny for the look. (Sorry for the icky grammar.) The skinnies just look like as if they’re borrowed pants from a friend.
Bags and belts also leave much to be desired. Although I am definitely not a name brand slave, I do think that real leather and uh better craftsmanship might elevate a lot of these looks. Accessories!!! I was not that impressed with local selection when I was in Seoul, but surely there must be more local options in real leather. I would looove to see some columns on the bag and shoe industries.
And as much as all the pink and ruffles tend to overwhelm me, I do think it’s that craziness and excessiveness is what Asia does well and what you don’t always see in Western fashion. When they will be able to channel that shiz tho, that’s why I’ll be all excited and riled up. Til then, I will be here~
Most of these fashions are nice, but I have to wonder about people wearing “I love NY” t-shirts. They probably haven’t even gone to NY. I have an “I Love Singapore” t-shirt. But I actually went there. Andre Kim is awesome, too!
OK…I’d say the “I Love NY” t-shirt is probably one of the most famous ones (and most famous lines) ever made, having gone there or not. If I have a t-shirt that says “I love pandas” does that mean I have to have one? Or have seen one in person in a zoo? Or can I just love pandas?
We all have opinions, but I was just laughing about this with a coworker a few weeks ago when the subject of “I Love NY” t-shirts came up. She agrees with me. How do you know you love NY if you haven’t gone there?
I love the woman with the pink stockings! Fabulous colour coordination from head to toe. Great find, FSM!
Haha… FMS, not FSM… been visiting Flying Spaghetti Monster websites too much, huh? ^^
@lovelyprincess
haha we singaporeans would dread to wear the ‘i love singapore’ tee, cos it is like some advertisement thing for our national day.. haha
and i love all the fashion i see here.. colourful and fabulous ^^
gets me soo pumped up!
Well, I would NEVER wear the shirt in Singapore…but in Korea…yes!
man! like you said, i seriously think it’s funny when people say stuff about andre kim but he’s got his fashion show down. i really wish i could attend one in person. i totally love all the embroidery work that goes into his pieces.
