fashion is fetish is fabulous is fun is fantastic!
Who’s that? If you guessed Senan, you’d be right! As the summer ends, we’ve got a lot of reports coming up, including hearing from Ryuji about what she did (and wore!) this summer, along with a final report from our intern. I can’t do much work on the site today, as I’ve got other stuff to catch up on for the rest of the day, but just wanted to give you think preview.

Just my opinion, but I think tattoos like this, especially on a girl, look trashy/slutty/distasteful. Why would someone mark their body up all over like this? I’ve never been a fan of tattoos, unless they are the small wash-off kind.
The bicycle glasses are cute though!
hello, lovelyprincess.
you’ve got a point there!
I just l-o-v-e marking my body up all over like that
but
sadly, I never regret. (dirrrrty, dirrrty girl huh?)
I don’t want them washed out,
I want my tattoos grow old with me,
even though they will be faded away.
well, here I am !
distasteful ‘nasty little b*Tch’
trash,slutty,flirty,Mcflurry~
I’m all for it!
I want the whole package…(+skanky?)

I’m too shy for haunting you down and smack your *ss.
I don’t usually write in english because I’m lousy at writing
english. but you made me do it. well done!!
re Senan’s tattoos, I disagree.
I love the boldness of her tattoos. I’m just really selfish and never saw the need of a tattoo unless I could see it (therefore mine is an ankle wrap tat.)
This is particularly because she’s a woman in Korea and, my God, that shows that she’s got moxie. (”moxie” used in the Merriam-Webster, secondary meaning, sense of the word.)
As many readers will surely agree, I think tattoos are great if you’re brave enough to have them done, and as a person too chicken to do it myself, I respect people who do it. And when it’s done as artfully, tastefully, and boldly as Senan has, it simply commands respect. Which is why we approached Senan to be a fashion diarist. If anything, it’s not just her tattoo, but the confidence, style, and sexiness that comes with them, which also made for one of the best pictures I’ve ever taken, made one night walking through Hongdae, and is the reason when I bumped into her a year later, I simply begged her to try doing a fashion diary entry for us. Her style, poise, and cool are truly unique and awesome — I’m not just saying this because she’s our fashion diarist, but rather, I wanted her to be our fashion diarist because of it.
And I’m glad she is. We try for diversity and true expression amongst our diarists, and even if one’s style is not one’s own, or to one’s tastes, I hope we can respect people’s styles and the courage it takes to come on the site and expose oneself to the world.
One might hope, that rather than simply dismiss as “something I could never understand” as “trashy/slutty/distasteful” (and why especially on a girl, and not a man?), perhaps you could rather ask the person with tattoos why they might think differently than you? Perhaps go beyond the point of one’s preconceived notions, or try to meet a person halfway? If only for the sake of discussion.
And why would a tattoo be any better (assuming it’s trashy/slutty/distasteful) just because it washes off? Because it’s permanent, it’s somehow not negative in some way?
Of all the new trends and looks and styles coming to Korea, I think tattoos becoming fashionable (see here and here) is an especially cool thing, because the people who choose them in KOREA, more than other places, are choosing a permanent form of self-expression that are by definition NOT just fads or following the crowd; even if tattooing becomes acceptable, I respect anyone who gets one because it DOESN’T wash off next season, or fade over time. In any case, it’s a bold statement, and a true sign that fashion/style/self-expression is changing in Korea.
Soory, my korean is very flawed but you said Korean is easier for you than English soo
Translation:
I think the tattoos suit her because she has so much confidence. (although, since she’s human, I’m sure she she has plenty of uncertainties/fears too.) No matter how sl*utty she may appear, because I know a little about her, for some reason, I can only think that she looks so cool! She doesn’t have tattoos because she wants to cover up her weakness with false sexiness. I think the tattoos show her strength as a woman.
To me it doesn’t feel like a fashion issue and if it is I’m not sure that I care.
any way what I wanted to say before i read the other comments is that the bikini color looks really good on your skin
But you know — I see tattoo and I don’t even think of the word “slutty” — I just think “cool.” I mean, any decoration or accessory can be whatever style you want, right? Shoes can be conservative, practical, or super sexy. So can earrings. Or a skirt. Or a tattoo.
I mean, you could have a white dragon painted down both sides of your belly (I had a roommate who had these very cool, subtle tats), and they were just frickin’ awesome. Or you could have a tattoo under your belly button saying “Ticket for one, going DOWNTOWN!” with an arrow pointed at your crotch.
Point is, I don’t see why a tattoo itself is “bad” or “good” or anything than what it is and the effect it has. And come on — Senan’s tats are pretty frickin’ unique and cool. I just think that the negative image in Korea of “tattoo=bad person” is one that still needs to be gotten over. It’s an old cultural prejudice.
Gee, if I got a penny every time lovelyprincess made a stupid/unnecessary/bimbo comment, I’d be a very rich woman indeed.
I saw Senan in Hongdae last week. She looked different than on the photos (I think she wore blue contact lenses and different make-up), but I recognized her thanks to the tats. She looked very pretty and had an almost corporeal bubble of confidence surrounding her.
thank god only one person has made such a ridiculous and rude stereotype.
i definitely think senan looks gorgeous and moreso in the way that she carries herself. it takes so much confidence in oneself to be able to commit to a tattoo and proudly display it despite all of the negative criticisms that are all too common in the korean society. i love that fms has such a diverse spectrum of writers and they always choose to photograph a variety of styles. maybe the close minded and ignorant readers should just move on to another site they might appreciate some more.
I ALWAYS love seeing more fashion diaries because it really heartens me to find fierce Korean women who are not afraid to speak out and to break out. Like I’m not the biggest fan of tattoos BUT because you know they are part of Senan’s look and expression, I really appreciate and respect them on her <3 PROPS~~ Senan <3
Senan씨, 아니 패션일기하는 분들이 화이팅~!
Also, I think imp1 mentioned previously, with relation to Senan, you have to really take her in the socio-cultural context of Korea, which one would assume you are doing if you are reading a blog about Korean fashion. Getting tattoos in Korea that are so openly visible carries with it a fair amount of social stigma. I think, and this is being typed with a HUGE caveat, that the social stigma arises from the association of tattoos with organized crime/gangsters and the Confuscianist notion that one does not alter one’s God-given body. The second notion should be thrown out of the window given the fact that people got over that shiz with plastic surgery. I don’t know about the first, someone correct me if I’m wrong.
If you’re looking at it from a Western perspective, you should prolly be more open, not less to tattoos.
And dress is a personal expression. I can’t stand the majority of frilly, girly, boring stuff that Koreans wear and that may float someone’s boat, whereas I would say that it’s boring or lemming-ish.
I don’t see nothing wrong with having tats, but for me personally I will never get any tattoos because I am a scary cat of the pain that comes along with getting one. heheheh
I am loving those bicycle glasses they are so adorable.
i agree with cjlatina.. i don’t think i can stand the pain.. especially with my uncle (who has LOADS of tattoos on his body) constantly telling me that the pain is quite killing…
hahah.. i want that bicycle glasses! cuteness ^^
Tatoos are just great if they match the person. In this case, they seem really nice. I thought the prejudice against tatoos was over several years ago…
Problem is when you don’t see a good match between the “attitude” of having a tatoo and the person’s own attitude.
McFlurry? I haven’t had one of those in awhile.
I don’t really see the connection between ‘tattoo’ and ’slut’ but lovelyprincess, you seem to be in your own little world too, so I guess that’s that. BTW you just got clowned on up there. clowned.
I actually don’t have any tattoos myself. I want them, but what holds me back is my ever-changing tastes. I will probably go for some soon though, and get them done in Japan. I won’t be getting anything small or halfassed either.
Like I really care if I got “clowned” on or not up there. have my opinions, you have yours, etc.
OK all, before this becomes a personal tit-for-tat session, let me just remind everyone to simply stick to making fashion commentary and leaving the nasty edge out of it.
And LP, you can make your opinion known, but imagine it’s a cocktail party. We’re not talking about strangers here, but someone who, like our fashion diarists, has been invited as a special guest for conversation. If she is showing the other party guests her dress, shoes, and tattoos, you replying “I think that anyone with tattoos is trashy/slutty/distasteful” and says “I don’t understand how anyone could wear such things” isn’t going to make you friends or endear you to the other guests.
In general, I would suggest a bit more tact in expressing your opinions, which you’re entitled to have. While your comments and participation are appreciated, another fact is that these aren’t the first of your comments that have rubbed people the wrong way.
That being said, let’s not turn this into a gang-up-on-one catfight, either. LP — can we try a bit more tact? I think it would be appreciated. And others, let’s cool off and keep the conversation going.
Tats can be many things, and who and how they are worn is paramount to how it may be classified. Cultural issues aside, she wears these well and carries the look like a siren!
We all have preferences, I am not a big tat fan, but again, on her it works. How she carries herself and identifies her style seems to be based on her own individualism!
i heart senan’s tattoos. i diasgree with that comment.
theyre just art that represents you i guess. and being a girl with tattoos is definitely cooool. its a powerful fashion accessory!! makes me wanna get one!! lol.
Tats and fashion
Well I guess in 10 years she will regret some if not all if she already doesnt.
She is very pretty, beautiful, sexy, etc. but if you walk down the street you can see 10 more girls just like her.
I like the tats becuase they show a sense of individuality and being unique. In her case a little over with the Metallica snake up the leg.
If not in 10 years, she may regret getting those things in 30 years, when she is like 70 or 80 with sagging tattoos. I don’t think any granny would look nice with tattoos. Just my opinion. Also, I know of some Korean guys who do NOT like “too sexy” or “glamour” girls. They mostly prefer “pretty” and “cute”.
I understand what you mean when you say that many native Korean guys like that pretty and cute girls because that’s just the social norm and what they’re used to. Sexy and glamour girls are more coveted and appreciated in Western countries.
However, I just don’t understand why you’re trying to downplay Senan’s style by saying that she won’t be appreciated by your run-of-the-mill average Korean guy.
Does she look like she cares?!
This girl has style and class regardless of what you think so just get over yourself and your biased opinions.
OK…I’m OVER it!
