These days, I’ve been seeing not only shirt minidresses, but these t-shirt minidresses with the uneven, t-shirt-like hems. Anyone know what these are called and where they’re coming from? I like her big, off-center flower. Saw her three times that day in Myeongdong — she was definitely making the most of her street runway time. Work it!

Man, I dunno either, but when it comes to all these top-heavy silhouettes that are standard fashion these days, she pretty much wins, since she is wearing no pants at all, haha.
I dislike the top, I dislike the mp3 player as an accessory because it’s just sloppy, the bag is ugly, and it’s mostly all that I don’t care for in fashion, but I’d still probably break my neck going for that second look, so I guess she is getting the effect she was going for…
I love the minidress since I love flowers, but that bag is so ugly and mp3 players are NOT accessories.
Sure they are! Particularly when you are, as this girl clearly is, using it to listen to music.
But the mp3 player still doesn’t look pretty around her neck. I mean, it’s just a plain old wire trailing down her shirtdress. Now, if it were a prettier color, or say, a Mickey Mouse mp3 player, it would be OK. You know, cute.
personal electronics are NOT stylish accessories. Whenever you see some girl dressed to the hilt, walking into poles and spilling her 4,300W Coffee Bean iced latte over herself because she has her face buried in some 7″ LCD portable DMB TV, then it should be clear…
The walkman, which then went to discman, then MD player, then mp3 player, these are all just bastions of a status item for Koreans. They are worn, yes, but they’re not stylish in any way and work against clothing and your fashion. You want a stylish unintentional accessory? Start smoking.
“The walkman, which then went to discman, then MD player, then mp3 player, these are all just bastions of a status item for Koreans.”
Agree, although MP3 players are becoming cheaper, so not sure if they keep being a status symbol (unless is the last iPod, and not a simple Yepp, or any Samsung model)
“You want a stylish unintentional accessory? Start smoking.”
Stylish in the sense of disgusting style, right?
But she’s listening to music….I don’t think at least in this case, that she’s “trying” to use the mp3 player as an accessory. I do this all the time, listen to music with one ear bud so I can hear the music be still be semi-aware of my surroundings as I cam walking down the street…
i don’t use my music player and headphones as accessories.. it’s quite cumbersome though i really love to listen on the go..
Love the sunflower print on the minidress.. though this is outdate, i would wear it with leggings though.. more comfortable
Who thought a cappuchino milk could make a great accessory?
Honestly I love her look because it’s super laid back; something that she just threw together at the last minute. And it’s so typically Korean aka feminine. It’s nice to know you don’t have to be super demure and frilly to obtain that sort of femininity.
my mistake, that’s not a sunflower print.. :/
so casual.i like it.
Yes, even though it is a cute minidress, it must be a little outdated. I haven’t seen anyone wearing these recently, and I go to Cheongdam/Apgu quite often. Shirt dresses, yes. But t-shirt dresses? No.
OK — now, let’s not be fashion nazis. Sure, appearance is important in the pics we’re looking at, but let’s remember to not put people under unfair scrutiny. There’s a functional aspect to the MP3 player, and no matter what one is wearing, I don’t think it’s reasonable to slight anyone for wearing an iPod or Yepp or whatever other kind of music player. It’s something you can put in your purse, listen to, and then put back in when you arrive where you’re going, or greet the person whom you’re going to meet.
Now, that being said, I think the MP3 player is also very accessorized here, although something cute or sleek unto itself, not as something that needs to be matched to every outfit. Hence, we don’t expect people to have iPods in every color, nor for one’s pink or lime iPod to match one’s dress or shoes. If it does, cool. Otherwise, I think we need to cut folks slack on the MP3 players.
The ones that were/are popular now are the little Disney Mickey ones and the larger Hello Kitty sets. You’ll see more of these in my next major post.
And I agree with Joanna — looks like something she threw on to come downtown with, and didn’t give big thought to matching. But the dress is cute enough to work no matter what she’s wearing it with.
I just looked up info on the Hello Kitty mp3 players. Someone said those things have actually been around since 2001, so he is wondering why people are just now talking about them. I’m not sure about the Mickey Mouse one, but I bet it isn’t new either.
Aha! I just looked up info about the Mickey Mouse mp3 players and I found an article from April of this year that said they made their way to the US in April. That means they were here probably by January of this year. So, they are not so new after all. Sometimes Korea is not as fashion forward as it makes itself out to be.
I went shopping for an mp3 player last fall, and there were plenty of micky mouse mp3s on the market – so they’ve been around quite a while here. Again, I reiterate, she’s listening to that thing – God forbid! when she could be finding something “cute”. But since she isn’t playing for the cute thing, buying an mp3 player just to fit a “cute” style strikes me as kindof a dumb requirement. In the meantime, who cares about Cheongdam and Apkujeong? This look is just right for summer, and shows some of that individuality we see north of the river.
I care about Apgu and Cheongdam. I can see that FMS must care too, since he has fashion news from those areas on here.
You know, based on what my friend says, I will have to agree. Skinny girls cannot wear baggy shiz, they need boobs to pull them off. Well, baggy sans belt. If she wore a belt, that might have been better, from a silhouette perspective, even if it ruined the flower. Ixnay on this look, especially with those shoes. Would have been willing to buy it if she had some cute flat sandals on, maybe some leather slides. Also, the white and yellow is not so flattering on her coloring!
She’s holding her mp3 player in her hand, same hand holding the drink. That thing dangling from her neck appears to be a shoe charm, which is still totes fugs.
Why I totally think I could make it as a stylist in Korea, when I’m ready to give up my day job ^_^
skinny girls CAN wear baggy clothes, there are myriad examples of it being well done, and oversized tops are fine. The flowers bother me more than the cut of the dress. The shoes are not ugly either, but this would’ve been cooler sans flower print and with, ahem, tall gladiator sandals. I’m fairly tired of belts over oversized tops, they’ve become this sneaky go-to thing like big sunglasses for women.
I’ve also just noticed she has the bandaids and scars on her feet, though she doesn’t have it as bad as a lot of girls over there…
And BTW, who gives a flying f- about Apgu or Chungdam? They’re the places you buy your clothes, but not where you go to style on people unless you’re a teenager dipped in labels walking the 100m stretch in front of the Galleria or a Korean-American visiting for the summer, trodding Rodeo.
Kangbuk gets a bad rep from people who don’t know, but if it’s the daytime and you want to style on people, you go to Kangbuk.
Oh imp1, I think we have to agree to disagree because I don’t think we have the same taste at ~*~all~*~ Clearly not because you went to the tall gladiator sandal place. Shudder. I forgive you though.) After all, variety is the kimchi of life. Man, I want some kimchi now. Or 꽷잎 god, I love that stuff <3
Belting a baggy top is a bit like big sunglasses but I still think you have to be v. conscious of how the baggy silhouette can overpower a thin frame. It is a preference thing on my end. Some people can pull it off, but it’s not something I’d seek out. I also think her dress looks like a glorified nightgown, but I’m not the biggest fan in the world of tshirt dresses.
Interestingly , I live in a suberb of Manila in the Philippines. It’s an A-B market with a very large Korean community. Being very appreciative of females and fashion, watching the Korean and Filipinas walk the mall is really a cultural stew. Korean Women are more “put together” demure is perfect! The thing is, in contrast, here many Korean women walk very well in heels, they wear their short shorts, make up and style all the time, Filipinas tend to wear flip flops, its warm and thankfully a lot of them have great feet! In contrast, the Korean women wear heels, they look great and in comparison, they tend to have that air about them, aloof yet aware of the attention they attract. Heels make the legs look so good in shorts and short skirts…
So , just want to say that I have been reading this blog awhile, love women and Korean women have always been a treat to observe.
I dont see many Korean women wearing stockings here, I guess the heat makes it just too uncomfortable thank God!
I guess I better add some pictures of what the Korean expats in Asia are doing!
