fashion is fetish is fabulous is fun is fantastic!
FeetManSeoul still regularly appears in the Expat Living section of the Korea Herald, where we most recently did a piece on the resurgence of suntans on the Korean streets. You can read from the PDF below.
Here’s the girl featured in the above Korea Herald article (in the “Expat Living” section), who’s been working in a clothing store, which is perhaps one reason she’s got a strong sense of fashion and is rocking the trends in the right way. She’s really striking, no? I especially liked her tattoo…
그리고 여기서는 홍대에서 인터뷰했던 뮤지컬댄스를 배우는 중학생이고. 피부색은 이쁘게 나오죠?
And here’s the girl mentioned in the article (but there wasn’t space to show her picture) who’s studying musical performance. As in musicals. She’s achieved a nice, even skin tone, no?
그리고 잊어버리면 안되는 친구를 착년여름에 만나게 됐는데 웬지 동대문에서 썬탠한 사람들이 많네요. 거기로 자주도 안가는데.
And let’s not forget Little Miss Orange, one of the first girls to pose for our cameras, who was sporting a great tan last summer. Interestingly enough, I also caught her in Dongdaemun. Lotsa tans there.

in my humble opinion i think tattoo girl is a good color but her face is a bit too dark- musical girl is too dark. the last one is a good even color. I have to say I’m more impressed by a golden- tone on Asians. I think Lee Hyori’s current color is very nice.
1. In my humble opinion, the darker the better, they don’t even look tan to me, maybe the color on my screen is off
2. unfortunately I don’t really think that the tan is back (was it ever here?) But I would be very happy if it does come to Korea.
The color varies between print and screen, and I think the PDF version got lightened a bit much, while the print version will be much darker (and more accurate). My version of the picture should also be darker on your screen.
And the tan was in during the mid-1990’s, albeit only amongst the über-fashionistas. Now, I think it has much more chance to mainstream than before. Looking at the popularity of tattoos now, and the fact that many girls who don’t get one still say they WANT them says a lot. And nowadays, seeing girls with pierced noses, belly buttons, and small tattoos is pretty common. How hard can a suntan be, then?
That’s my theory…everything’s shifted in the last 3-4 years and allowed many new things to become possible, and wilder things to become mainstreamed.
you’ve got a cool and nice blog !
that’s cute !
Love the tan, more people should do it (taking the reight precautions, sunscreen, etc.).
“albeit only amongst the über-fashionistas.”…..then can we really say that’s “in”
and…admittedly, I don’t spend a lot of time in Hongdae (but a lot in Sinchon)…and I’m not seeing much, if any, of the pierced noses, belly buttons, and small tattoos…..and trust me I am looking…(often staring..sometimes examining)…but can we really use the word “common” ??
just wonder…do you got a tattoo, nose piercing, and/or belly button ring?
Isn’t it wise to have the same suntan tone all over the whole body?
nicknows — Nope! My body doesn’t have a single modification! As for the “common” remark…it’s common enough to see a woman with some kind of previously unheard of modification: a lot of younger women who are less on the conversative side have a belly or nose piercing, and a tattoo nowadays is definitely something you see passing by quite a bit these days, if you’re looking.
If I’m not mistaken tanning makes you seem slimmer then you would normally look with paler skin.
That is probably true, oma. Gives more vertical dimension and slims, if the skin has a nice sheen.
Suntanning: recycled Japanese trend. I know there are some people on this site who vehemently deny any connection between Japanese street fashion and Korean fashion, but frankly, these girls minus their (Korean hairstyles and the summer 08 buzzword dayglo color palette) could’ve been lifted from the streets of Japan circa 2004. Clothes, shoes, accessories. #1 even carries her bag in a Japanese way, a mannerism that came into vogue amongst Japanese women many years ago to show off a purse and free the hands, which trickled on down. 5 years ago, Korean girls weren’t doing that, they were mostly shoulder-carriers or carried with their hands.
Feetman, when you refer to this being trendy 10 years amongst ‘fashionistas’ I assume you are talking about the K-pop singers (ex. that girl from Cool and the one tiny girl in Roo’Ra) who imitated the kogal/island tan Japanese fads, and the Korean girls who would’ve followed them. The whole deep tan thing/kogal craze that knocked pale skin on its ass in Japan came about because of Amuro Namie and Ayumi Hamasaki, combined with the opening of Shibuya 109 and a boom of small boutiques within that area. Plus, there was the realization that a healthy vacation tan earned in places like Hawaii, Guam, Okinawa, etc, could be used to demonstrate some sort of wealth. Artificially-whitened snow white skin has never really come back into style in Japan either.
Maybe this really will catch on in Korea as well, because any trend that could exude some glimmer of wealth or status just gets beaten into the ground in Korea, even until it looks cheap.
Impolite one, as usual, right on!
