World DJ Festival, May 2008.

올 해 여태까지 서울에서 가장 큰 파티 중 두 개가 열렸는데 무지 재미났었어요. 하나는 워커힐에 있는 서울에서 가장 근사하다고 할 수 있는 클럽으로 미국에서 제일 유명한 DJ 스티브 아오키를 모셔왔고, 또 다른 파티는 세계적으로 좀 놀아주시고 알아주시는 DJ들을 모셔온 거였죠. 특히나 두번째 파티는 위에 사진도 있는 제 2회 세계 디제이 페스티벌이었는데 난지도 캠프장에서 큰 야외 공연을 주말 내내 한 파티였어요. 렛츠 고 파뤼 파뤼~유후! 둘 다 무진장 신났고 이제 서울에서도 국제적으로 놀 수 있는 파티 문화가 생겼다는 증거이겠죠. 서울의 클럽과 파티 문화에서 2008년은 아마 대막의 서곡을 여는 해로 기억될 것입니다.

Two of Seoul’s biggest parties ever have yielded some of the most fun ever. One brought one of America’s most famous DJ’s, Steve Aoki, to one of Seoul’s classiest venues at the Walker Hill Hotel, while the other brought famous DJ’s from around the world to a huge outdoor performance that lasted an entire weekend, at the 2nd World DJ Festival, held at the Nanjido campgrounds. Either way, they turned out to be a lot of fun, and marked the beginning of a more international party scene in Seoul. For the club and party scene, 2008 is turning out to be a banner year.

Steve Aoki came to Seoul and helped people have the most fun you can have indoors! (Still, one can’t forget the Spektra party brand, or the fun we had at Club Cargo!).

하지만 두 번째로 열린 세계 디제이 페스티벌의 야외 환경은 특이한 의상과 캠핑과 어우러져 확연히 다른 파티를 만들었어요.

But the outdoors environment of the 2nd World DJ Festival, combined with costumes and camping, made for a totally different kind of party.

무대 근처에서의 풍경은 어느 다른 콘서트장에서나와 다를 바 없었어요.

Near the stage, the scene isn’t too different from any other concert venue.

하지만 무대 저 멀리에는 무수히 많은 일들이 벌어지고 있었습니다. 합법적인 무료 문신 해보실래요? 여기는 제 친구 중 한명인데 무료 문신 텐트에서 목 되에 “파티마의 눈” 문신을 새기고 있었어요. 한국에서 대부분의 문신은 의사에게 시술되었을 때에만 합법이에요. 그래서 문신은 어쨌든 많이 하지만 보통 불법으로 시술되지요. 이 페스티벌에서는 하지만 합법적인 무료 문신을 할 수 있었어요 - 날마다 오지 않는 기회죠! 그래서인지 기다리는 줄이 매우 길었답니다.

But away from the stage, there are so many other things going on. How about free, legal tattoos? Here’s a friend of mine getting the “Eye of Fatima” tattooed on the back of her neck in a free tattoo tent. Most tattooing is still only legal in Korea if done by a medical doctor. Hence, tattooing, while still done, is done so illegally. This was one of the few chances to get a free, legal tat. There was a long line.

And meanwhile, back at the indoors Aoki party, there was some serious club style to be seen!

우리는 무대에서 내려가서 문 밖에서 조금 피곤에 지친 듯한 패셔니스타를 만날 수 있었어요.

We catch a few fatigued fashionistas on the way off the floor and out the door.

이 의상은 조금 더 찬찬히 봐야 할 필요가 있겠어요. 저 찰리채플린 모자, 재킷, 벨트 그리고 골드 라메로 만든 핫팬츠…이 패션 뭐지? 또 저 금색 샌달까지 신었네요. 아무튼 멋쟁이야.

These outfits deserve a closer look. That bowler, jacket, belt, and gold lamé hot pants…say whuuuut? She’s also got the gold sandals. Awesome.

20년대 신여성 스타일의 부활인가 - 그물 스타킹과 요목조목 찬 팔찌가 합쳐졌네요.

That revival of “flapper” gets mixed with fishnets and other assorted bangles.

네, 이제는 집으로 돌아갈 시간입니다. 골드 라메 입었던 아가씨는 센스 있게 여분 신발을 챙겨왔네요. 저 금색 신발은 예쁘기는 하지만, 확실히 편하게 걸으라고 만든 구두는 아니죠.

Yes, it’s time to call it a night. Ms. Gold Lamé was smart to bring a pair of backups. These shoes are beautiful, but they certainly weren’t made for walking.

하지만 2박 3일 DJ 페스티벌에서 파티는 끝날 줄을 모릅니다. 사람들은 야영을 하고 아직 파티를 떠날 수가 없어요. 야외라서 그런지 패션 스타일은 좀 더 캐주얼하고 편안했어요. 그리고 한복을 입었으면 입장이 공짜라서 한복 스타일이 또한 아주 신기하게 디제이 파티와 함께 잘 섞여있었습니다.

But the party never ends over at the 3-day DJ Festival, where people were camped out and not ready to go. Since it was outside, the styles were a bit more casual and comfortable. And since you also got in for free if you wore a hanbok, that was interestingly remixed as well.

파티장 들어가자마자 번쩍이는 네온과 메탈릭 사운드가 여기저기 들려왔어요.

이 티셔츠랑 저 태도 마음에 들었습니다.

또한 그녀의 미니드레스가 너무 좋았어요 - 금색 웻지 슈즈랑 어울려서 말이죠. 나라면 좀 더 발은 색의 스타킹을 신었을 것 같긴 하지만, 어쨌든 전체적인 조화는 마음에 들었습니다.

I also loved her minidress and working the gold wedges. I might’ve gone with lighter stockings, but I did like the look.

무대 가까이에서는 사람들은 각자 구역에서 캠프하고 있었고 춤추면서 그렇게 밤을 지새우고 있었습니다.

Closer to the stage, people are camped out on their own areas, dancing the night away.

파티장 문 왼쪽에서 그들은 저 펑키 안경을 나눠주고 있었어요, 그렇게 생각할래요…

They were giving out those funky glasses on the left at the gate, I believe…

요즘에 펑키 선글라스가 무진장 중요하잖아요 알다시피. 밤에 선글라스 끼는건 스타일을 위해서 필수!

These days, funky sunglasses are of extreme importance, as you know. Wearing one’s sunglasses at night must be done with style.

그래서 매우 패션이 앞서가는 이 여자분은 굳이 스타일을 매치할 필요조차 없어요. 그리고 우리는 그게 마음에 들어요. 하지만 그녀의 어울리지 않은 두가지 색깔 스타킹이 봤을 때 굉장히 잘 먹히는 것 같아요 - 별로 튀지 않고 네온의 밝은 그림자와 어우러져서 말이죠. 정말 좋은 패션 센스에요.

And she so fashion-forward, she don’t even have to match. And we like that. But even her “mismatched” two-tone is done really well, in terms of them being equally muted and lighter shades of neon. They worked well.

진정한 패셔니스타는 디테일에 강합니다!

우리 전에 이 여자분들 만났는데 여기 더 좋은 샷이 있네요. 그리고 강북에서 온 좀 더 편안한 패션 스타일이군요.

We met these ladies before, but here’s a clearer shot, and little more laid-back fashion from north of the river…

파티가 자정을 넘어 새벽으로 넘어가면서 여기 또한 에너지 레벨이 점점 낮아지고 있군요. 그녀는 조금 피곤해 보여서 일어나서 포즈해달라고 하기가 싫었어요. 그런데도 지금 앉은 포즈도 그대로 매우 재밌어요.

Here also, energy levels dipped as the party went into the wee hours of the morning. She looked so tired, I didn’t want to ask her to stand up. Her pose was interesting as it was.

이 커플도 전에 만난 적 있는데, 하지만 이 샷에서는 아니고, “아메리칸 고딕” 패션을 연상시키는 사진에서 만났었어요.

We’ve also met this couple before, but not in this shot, where they reminded me of “American Gothic.”

그치? 조금?

이 그림도 재밌을 거라고 생각했어요.

I also thought this was a funny pic.

세 네시 쯤 되니까 나는 완전 녹초가 되었습니다. 여기 파티는 아직도 즐겁게 사람들, 음식, 재밌는 대화로 가득했었어요. 그리고 또한 몇몇 사람들은 아직까지도 춤추고 노래하면서 밤을 지새우고 있었구요. 그리고 아직도 매우 신기할 정도로 밝았구요 - 해가 지고 난 바로 다음인 것 처럼 느껴졌어요, 단지 그 상태로 조금 오랫 동안 남아있었다는 것 빼고는 말이죠.

At about 3 or 4AM or so, I was bushed. The landscape was pleasantly filled with people, lots of food, and good conversation, along with some people still dancing and singing the night away. And it was still surreally bright — it almost felt like that moment right after sunset, except it just sort of stayed that way.

이제는 우리가 헤어져야 할 시간, 집에 가서 잠 자야죠. 다음날 아침 일어나자 마자 꿈만 같았어요. 2008년은 정말 서울의 새로운 장르의 페스티발/파티 풍경을 여는 해로 거듭나고 있습니다!

A perfect time to make one’s way home and sleep it off. Upon waking up the next morning, it really seemed like a dream. 2008 is certainly turning out to be a great year for a new kind of festival/party scene in Seoul!
