fashion is fetish is fabulous is fun is fantastic!
“The Fashion Diaries” are columns produced by real people wearing real fashions. Our fashion diarists don’t merely follow current trends, but also integrate them into their own particular styles as not mere fashion followers, but style leaders. They record what they wear every day, as well as what they buy, or any changes they make to their look. They have opened their purses, closets, and vanities to us, allowing us an intimate and transparent look into real fashion that we rarely get to see. If you need fashion hints, or are tracking trends, or just want to vicariously experience another fashion lifestyle, you have come to the right place. So, make suggestions, write comments, and let’s start a style conversation!
Beloved FMS Readers, my name is Sungwon. I’m mixed; half-Kyungsando-ian and half-Oklahomian. I grew up in the US and have been living in Daejeon for 4 years. I’m a PhD student at KAIST and I play bass in a progressive metal band called Dusk (myspace | cy club).

I also study the Korean martial arts Gicheon and Haedonggumdo and I do the exercise methodology called Crossfit (the actors for the movie 300 prepared for the movie doing exercise similar to Crossfit workouts).

Now I’m thinking of trying some modeling as well. All these parts of my identity affect the way I present myself to the world.

When I first came to Korea, I was very self-conscious about standing out as a foreigner and as a long-haired guy wearing scary metal t-shirts. Daejeon, especially, although a large city, doesn’t have the metropolitan feel of Seoul.

And at my school, most graduate students all wear the same bland outfits. Over the years, I’ve come to embrace being different and now I often enjoy flaunting it. But I’ve only gotten interested in fashion within the past year or so.

At first, it was because I became interested in how people treat you differently depending on the kind of image you present. Then a few months ago, Salsaqn from this very site gave me a makeover and I learned a lot about getting clothes that fit right and how to use accessories.

04/25 On the road to school /
As you can see in these photos, recently I’ve started using bandanas and leather strings tied around my neck. I started doing that to add color and because I don’t have many nice necklaces yet.
사진을 보면 아시겠지만 최근에 내가 목에 반다나나 가죽줄을 많이 매고 다니고 있다. 처음에는 섹갈을 많이 써보고 싶고 목거리 예쁜것도 많이 없으니까. ^^;

04/18 Experimenting with nail polish /
I guess you could say my general look is Rocker, but I’ve been experimenting with my style a bit. I think it’s easier for me to experiment here in Korea than in the US. As a dreadlocked foreigner, I stand out anyway, so extra flair here and there won’t get me many more stares than usual.

I can also play around with more effeminate kinds of styles (including makeup like colored eye shadow and bright nail polish) without being beaten up for being gay or something like might happen in the backwoods of the good ol’ US of A.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures. My old camera finally broke and I’ve had to resort to whatever’s been available. I’ll be getting a decent camera soon. Now I have a challenge for you, dear reader. Leave a comment guessing my age. I’ll maybe buy you dinner if you guess right.

I’m going to guess your age. You look young so that must mean you are older than your appearance. So I’m gonna guess that you’re 32.
I’ll be in Daejon this Saturday. Hahahaha~
Your logic is right on and your guess is quite close, but not correct. You’ve earned yourself an appetizer! ^^
Joanna and Sungwon, sitting in a tree…
Well~ Appearance is certainly an extra we should more pay attention to.
Obviously this guy is doing that right, but many other things also… nice man!!!
Did you take all those pictures yourself? (^^)V
I wasn’t kidding about going up to Daejon on Saturday. My friend is having a house warming party. We’re all pretty much gyopos. You’re more than welcome to crash. hahahaahah~
hey! long time!!
well… i know your age though..
so, r u gonna buy me dinner? hehe…
btw, nice pix.
kskusanagi: Almost all! Thank you, my friend and my drummer Hyunjin and my labmate Souneil for taking pictures of me.
joanna: No kiddin’! I didn’t know there were more than a couple of gyopos here. Count me in.
You’re 30! Pick me up at 7?
^__^
At laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast!
A male model has come at laaaaaaaaaaaaast!
Hurrah! Hurrah! Eye-candy for us womenfolk! Welcome to FMS, Seungwon! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go giggle incessantly like a schoolgirl . . .tehehe.
You already knew my age, so how about you buy me, dinner? ^^
Maria: Come to Korea and I’ll pick you up!
Gomushin Girl: Thanks for the warm uh… schoolgirl welcome! I’ll try my candilicious best.
Is that an Opeth flag? You are definately my style.
Right about now I’m so glad FMS opened up the comments!
You’re a bit older than I am, but if I was in Korea I would so totally take you out for dinner.
Would you possibly recruit some equally fashion-forward male friends for our viewing and educational pleasure?
My girl and guy friends could definitely use the tips on male fashion from the peninsula.
Plus, this male modelage is way too awesome to limit.
As always great work recruiting FMS. (ditto on the ㅋㅋㅋ)
Hello Hello Sungwon!
I was going to say 30 too, but it wouldn’t help me at all since I am in the States.heheheheh
Wow so you feel that you can express yourself more in Korea than in the US?
Also loving the underwear pic. O.O
Michelle: That is indeed an Opeth flag. You might be my style, too, since you know my favorite band!
jasmas: I would totally take you up on that! I think FMS is working to get some other new fashion diaries going as well.
cjlatina: I have come to experiment with fashion more here than I did in the US. Being perceived as an outsider anyhow, I’ve gotten accustomed to standing out.
I like that you experiment with different ideas and rework them to suit your own style. It looks like you’re having fun with fashion and your individuality really shines through!
Big fan of the skirt over jeans idea – loud and proud! Is it a proper skirt or DIY?
With that bod, you can’t go wrong with the “minimalist” look either…just you in your Calvins =)
Can’t wait to see and read more from your next entry!
Hi Bionic Bunny,
Thanks! Sounds like you “get” what I’m about. I didn’t know how the skirt/jean thing would work, but it’s something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. The skirt is an old shirt that was too big for me and cut weird, so I never wore it. I brought it in to a seamstress who altered it into a half-skirt for me in 10 mins.! She quickly understood what I wanted and I think the whole alteration was under 5,000 won or something ridiculously cheap. I’d like to make some different skirts (like a long front and back flap thing) with some hanbok fabric, too.
Hmm, maybe I should just give up on clothes and get a wardrobe of nice underwear!
you look awesome———-
i was just lookin around and end up here!
wow-
i used to live in daejeon when i was in korea~
it’s been long time that i left korea
really wanna visit ;(
anyway, i enjoyed. many thnx =>
Thanks for the kind words, Jess!
