Street Styles: Korean Animal Hats

“Street Styles” tracks not just individual fashion choices, but tries to capture fashion that is representative of types of fashion genres visible on the Korean streets.
지하철에서 이 사촌동생과 언니를 우연히 만났는데 딱 찍고 싶었던 니트모자와 동물모자를 쓰고 있었네요. 참 오래된 모자, 니트 유행들이 만난 건데 이번 시즌의 비그 트렌드는 동물 모자예요.
I was in the subway when I met this pair of cousins wearing just the hats I wanted to take pictures of for this season – a knit cap and the ubiquitous animal hat that is so widespread this year. In the first, you have the knit and beret hats coming together around knit caps, which have always been in style, but the animal hats really found a nice for themselves this winter in particular.

Of course, this season the bear hat rose to popularity with Paris Baguette’s “free” hat-and-paw set that came with every purchase of a Christmas cake. The commercial was a hit and that hat/paw combo impossible to get. It was like trying to find the Holy Grail.
알았어. 인정할게요. 그 모자는 귀엽기 한데…휴. 그리고 밑에 사진에 그 모자를 실제로 쓰는 모습은 귀여운 거네요.
OK. I admit it. Those hats are kind of cute. And in the picture below, it looks good on her. Fine.

The little girls are so cute, I could die. Not practical, but adorable~
What’s interesting to me is that this IS so last year in a sense.
I remember getting one of these hats last year when I went skiing. A lot of people had them on the slopes. I was officially dubbed “SkiTiger” the week I was at Muji.
Also, PopSeoul had a post on celebs and their cute animal hats sometime last year (I remember commenting on it.)
It’s funny to see the trend make it to the streets at large a year later. However, that’s good because now I can and have worn the tiger hat if it’s a REALLY COLD day (it covers your ears and it’s soft). Yep, people see me and I hear them say “horyang-i” (tiger in Korean) and fawn over me when I wear it.
Seoul is a funny place, seriously.

True. Actually, these hats have been around for a long time. I almost bought a Disney Marie the cat one back in 2004/2005 at Lotte Mart, but decided to wait. Maybe I’ll get one this time around. I just don’t want the same one as everyone else. Too many people got those bear ones from Paris Baguette last year. And their cakes are not that delicious anyways. Does anyone remember the cute stuffed bears they were giving away with the purchase of a cake at Dunkin Donuts in December 2006? I got one of those. Speaking of Dunkin Donuts, who got their Dokdo t-shirts? I got a blue one…hehehe
