멀티매거진 for your fashion fetish…
Being American, I have noticed that most Western guys are somewhat fashion-challenged. The biggest mistake lies in picking clothes that don’t fit — they are usually too big. Since I love Korean men’s fashion, I thought I would try an experiment in which I would take one of my western guy friends and dress him in Korean style clothes.
My first makeover was on my friend, Matt. I took him to the Doota! shopping mall in Dongdaemun Market.
Notice the baggy jeans and unfitted dress shirt…not too flattering (sorry, Matt!) The Doota! shopping mall is made up of small, individual boutiques. My challenge was to come up with a complete look from a single, individual boutique.
The First Look: Dressy
For the first look, we went to the Mirad Italy Booth on the 3rd Floor. The salesman, Jung Hee Seok, helped us out.
What a change! Matt looks like a movie star here! I chose black fitted pants with a black fitted shirt, khaki trench coat, and red striped belt for a touch of color. I was surprised to find out that Matt’s waist size was so small- his jeans made it look like it was a lot bigger.
Khaki Dress Coat - 125,000 won.
Total- 253,000 won ($273.00 USD).
The Second Look: Casual
In Korea, the fitted blazer with dress pants or with jeans is a key look. We went to a boutique called, Cheong Woo Sa, 3rd Floor, Booth #25.
In this look, I combined blue jeans with a fun shark shirt, black fitted blazer, and another colorful belt. The fitted blazer really brings this look together. It also slims him down.
Shark Shirt- 25,000 won. Total- 153,000 won ($165,000 USD)
A Nice Pair of Shoes (멋진 신발)
For a change of pace, we decided to look at shoes next. All men should have nice dress shoes in 3 colors — brown, black, and white.
There is a shoe store, Mirad Italy, I always go to on the Accessories floor. It’s on the 4th Floor, Booth #113. The salesman who works there, Mr. Min Song Kim , is very nice and always gives me a great deal.
His shoes are handmade and have a lot of nice little details.
I picked out these shoes for Matt. These white leather shoes look great with darker jeans or black pants.
White Leather Shoes (흰색 가죽 신발)- 65,000 won ($70.00 USD).
Disco Necklace (디스코 목걸이)
Very pimpalicious!! The ajumma (older woman) in the store got really excited when Matt tried on this necklace. I think she desperately hoped that we would actually buy it…she’s probably had it in the store since the 70’s.
The Third Look: It’s All About the Matching Shoes & Belt
For the third and fourth look, we hit up a boutique called, Pink Gorilla-3rd Floor, Booth #106. The salesman, Song Un Park, was really helpful.
There, I combined Matt’s new white shoes with a matching white belt, blue jeans, light blue fitted dress shirt, checkered skinny tie, and a brown coat. There’s nothing sexier on a guy than a pair of nice white shoes with a matching white belt.
Jeans-49,000 won.청바지Belt-25,000 won.벨트 Tie-12,000 won. 스키니넥타이 Fitted Blue Shirt- 38,000 won.블루셔츠Brown Coat- 85,000 won.
Total: 209,000 won ($225.00 USD)
The Fourth Look: The Checkered Blazer
Matt let me know earlier that he really loves checkered patterns, the color maroon, and fun accessories. We both got really excited when we saw this really cool checkered blazer. I put it together with his jeans, white shoes, a maroon shirt, and a different checkered skinny tie.
Maroon Fitted Shirt- 35,000 won.밤색 셔츠Checkered Blazer- 79,000 won.체크무늬 마의Skinny Tie- 12,000 won.
Total Cost- 126,000 won. ($136.00 USD)
Matt had a great time shopping with me, has a fabulous new wardrobe, and received many compliments the next day at work when he wore his new clothes.

The editing has to stop…. I live by my RSS program, and this is the only blog where at least once a week old posts get re-upped as new ones. It’s quite annoying. It’s gotten a lot better recently, but this entry has already been edited two or three times in the last 24 hours….
Why?
Also, the first couple of outfits look a little ridiculous, but looks like you got into the groove towards the end, especially when you let up on the poor guys inseam with jeans.
[...] Feetman Seoul’s salsaqn (I think it’s Salsa Queen) treated her friend Matt like a Ken Doll and tried him out on Korean men’s fashion. [...]
Love this! I bet you had so much fun with this experiment. My hubby has a slim build and in the US always has a hard time finding clothes that fit him well. We usually go with European makers. Once we’re in Seoul though I know his wardrobe will expand rapidly!
Goood to see ya back, Yoomz. Coming to Seoul? Should we plan an FMS event around then?
Awesome! Matt looks very good in those outfits. I hope this makeover-type article becomes a regular feature. I’d love to get a makeover myself! It’s amazing how the clothes make the man. I’ve recently become more sensitive to how people dress (including myself!) after getting interested in pick-up artist material. Pick-up artists’ fashion advice? “Being well-groomed is more important than looks” Basic advice that especially we north american menfolk should take to heart more often.
WOW! He looks 100% hotter after the makeover
Well done, salsaqn!
Now if only all the other American men would get some fashion sense. >.>;
Naesung - Since we’re using Wordpress as a system to write articles, sometimes we accidentally publish a version between edits before quickly taking it offline. That’s maybe what you’re seening in the RSS. Sorry about that, but we’re still learning to use Wordpress as a content management system, and awkwardnesses such as differences between a downloaded RSS version of a post and the post when it is released in its final form happen. We’ll try to reduce it as much as possible, but such are the limitations of the medium as we try to manage content between several authors.
Didi - As for the madeover man himself, I thought he looked great and that salsaqn did a great job! As well as Matt the model. What a good sport!
to naesung,
yes i will admit that the fist outfit was not the best-the fit was not perfect and it was the first time I had tried it.
matt didn’t buy that outfit-although I really did like the khaki coat.
but matt did buy the later outfits and he does enjoy them.
to other bloggers…yes this will become a somewhat regular blog…im working on another story right now where I transform my brother.
stay tuned!
FMS, look out for Yoomz storming Seoul in Sept of 08 =). Husband and I will be working for Samsung and will probably living in the Gangnam area. We can go drool over the hot shoes at Galleria together =).
I gotta get that disco tie !
I can’t tell from the post - is it Booth #113? And how much?
Cheers
Philip
