OK – I loved the idea that Paris Hilton came to Korea. I love the fact that she gave some money to charity and just generally looked great while being here. I also love the fact that she came and was given a stunning hanbok (Korean traditional dress) to wear, which is such a symbol of Korean pride and pretty darn cool that the pinnacle of glitz, glamour, and gossip was getting in traditional carriages, posing in front of palaces, and eating bibimpap at the same time.

오오, 패리스 힐튼이 한국에 왔어요! 한국에 온것도, 돈도 기부한 것도 여기 와서는 매우 멋지게 보였다는 것도 매우 좋아요. 그리고 와서 우리나라 상징인 색고운 한복 입었다는 것도 무지무지 좋아요! 한복 입고 가마도 타고 옛스러운 궁 앞에서 포즈도 취하고 비빔밥도 먹고 정말 패리스 힐튼과 우리나라 전통 상징들이 다같이 잘 어울렸던 것 같아요.

So why on God’s green earth is there not a single frickin’ picture of Paris in that hanbok, one where we can actually see it, from the Korean press corps? Given that the very symbol of Korean culture was draped upon the very symbol of western glam – that symbolism wasn’t lost on anyone – the entire Korean press corp can’t get her to post for one stinkin’ full shot of her in that hanbok? What the hell?

근데 잠깐만! 여기서 마음에 안드는게 하나 있는데, 도대체 왜 패리스 힐튼이 한복입고 입은 제대로 된 사진 한장 조차 없는거에요? 한국 사진기사님들, 뭐하신 거에요? 바비인형처럼 제대로 서양 아이콘인 패리스 힐튼이 한국 와서 한국 전통의 상징인 예쁜 한복 입었는데, 제대로 머리부터 발끝까지 나온 사진 하나 없다는게 말이나 되요? 너무하십니다 한국 기자님들!

As a photographer, I’m flabbergasted. At a loss for words. Pissed. Ready to chew nails. Heck, I might even go and do something drastic in a fit of rage and hurt myself, like buying a Wonder Girls album and actually listening to it. Arrrrrgh!

This is the best the Korean press corps can do?

솔직히, 저도 사진 찍는 사람인데 깜짝 놀랐어요. 완전 화나서 거의 거리에 나가서 방황하다가 레코드 가게에 가서 원더걸스 음반을 살 충동까지 느꼈다니까요! 진짜 사서 들을뻔 했어요~

MyDaily got her in a gorgeous outfit that was a work of art, but cut off the shoes. Doh! Duh. Then comes the hanbok shot. Another MyDaily article asks the question, “Doesn’t it look good on me?” Well, I don’t know! I can’t see it! Duh.

마이데일리에서 예쁜 사진 하나 찍었는데 발이 잘렸어요. 저런!-_- 이번엔 한복 버전이에요. 또다른 마이델리 기사에서는 “나한테 잘어울려요?” 하고 써놨는데, 글쎄…전혀 모르겠는데요!!!

ISplus pulls off a shot that’s better and got passed around a lot (it’s a nice moment), but I still can’t see that darn hanbok. Wasn’t there a “photo time”? She didn’t pose for all the cameras after strolling around in it? Grrrrrr.

일간스포츠가 더 괜찮은 사진을 하나 건졌는데요. 하지만 한복은 여전히 볼수가 없잖아! 포토 타임 같은거 없었나요? 패리스 힐튼이 카메라 앞에서 돌면서 포즈 취하지 않았어요? 왜 하나도 없냐는 말이야~~

Then we get a nice “small-girl-in-the-big-city” shot (from MyDaily again) that actually is cool because it’s a “big-girl-in-the-traditional-palace” shot. It’s cool. But kind of unsatisfying. Paris Hilton is a fashion icon come to Korea – we don’t have better shots than this? It’s OK…but didn’t the photographer learn anything in How To Use a Camera 101 – don’t crop her just before the hem of her dress! At least crop at the bottom of the dress (wouldn’t have lost very much of the tops of roofs), or in the mid-thigh. Under the clothes, or above the joints – THAT’S where you crop! Aaaaaaaaaaagh!

그리고 다시 마이데일리에서 “대도시 속의 소녀” 이미지의 패리스 힐튼을 찍어놨네요. 이거는 나름 분위기 있는데요~ “전통 궁 안에 있는 세계 대스타”라! 하지만 그래도 아직 감동이 미지근해요. 잘나가는 패션 아이콘인 패리스 힐튼이 한국까지 왔는데 이거보다는 잘해야지! 그 사진 기자들은 카메라 사용법 기초 수업도 안들었대요? 드레스 끝자락에서 모델 자르지 않는거, 기본 원칙인데! 드레스 밑에서 자르던가 아니면 허벅지 중간에서라도 잘랐어야지…아아아악!!

The only people (ahem) who seemed to have shots of the dress was People magazine – a foreign media outlet! And they seemed to have the only interesting shots – why didn’t these show up around the Korean Internet? If they did, I sure spent a lot of time on Naver and Daum and Newsen and countless other press outlets. Love these pics, by the way – and I finally got to see the full hanbokked Paris – in People! Apparently, the Korean press made a big deal out of the foreign press making a big deal out of Paris in Seoul. You know what I mean, right?

웃 긴건 패리스힐튼의 진짜 사진들을 찍은건 피플 매거진 기자들이라는거에요! 힐튼은 한국에 왔는데 우리 나라 기자들.. 외국 기자들한테 밀린거야? 그것도 홈그라운드에서?! 오마이갓! 제가 네이버, 다음, 뉴센 다 찾아봤었는데도 없었던 그 풀샷 사진들을 피플에서 찾을 수 있었어요. 실망이에요..

But it’s NOT like the Korean photo corps wasn’t around for the really important stuff, right? Here’s a typical shot, this one from Sportainment:

Yeah. Like the Korean press corps was interested in the dress. Check out the video. And yes, the opening titles do indeed say, “A chest-exposing dress.” Classy.

I guess the hanbok wasn’t good enough for Korean press media attention, although the foreign press seemed to love it. The Korean press seemed to be more concerned about getting some boob shots (hey, guys – it’s mostly just push-up action – haven’t you figured that out yet?). But then, what can you expect from underpaid tabloid newspaper photographers, anyway? Well, cheap upskirt shots, apparently. Thanks, Newsen. Ya know, we’ve all seen Paris bukket nekkit, and in some pretty good video detail; so can you spare us the attempts to get a picture of Paris’s crotch? I’ve seen it already, and so have millions across the world. It’s not a scoop, guys.

Now, FeetManSeoul.com is determined. By the time the next Korean celebrity comes around, we’ll be ready with a press pass and access and get our own dagnabbin’ pictures.

아마도 한복이 한국 미디아 한테는 관심이 별로 안갔나봐요. 외국 기자들한테는 둘도 없는 기사거리였는데 말이죠. 한국 기사는 좀 가슴 샷에 오히려 신경 많이 쓰는거 같아요. 이봐요, 남자들, 그거 그냥 푸쉬업 동작하는것 같이 포즈 하는건데 아직도 모르셨나?ㅋㅋ

하지만 싸구려 타블로이드 사진들에서 뭘 바랄수 있겠어요. 짧은 미니스커트 샷이나 그런거지 뭐. 뉴센, 고마워요. 고화질 비디오로 우리 이미 패리스 힐튼 몸매 좀 감상했지. 다음 번엔 치마 속을 찍어보려나? 근데 그건 이미 전세계 사람들이 다 봤었는데. 이미 특종도 아니라구요.
