well i've been living in korea now for 4 years almost and when i just came i was "fat" for korean standard so had to lose 8kgs but i gained 4kgs again and most of my friends are telling me that i should lose weight cuz i have thighs of Beyonce. i love my fatness and jelliness but i guess for skinny korean guys i'm too much.
The only reason why korean male is looking for unhealthy looking girls, is because they are skinny and short.
and i must say koreans do like beyonce but not her body.

Well, it's good to have variation in standards of body image and sexiness, but to be real, most Korean women don't look like Beyonce any more than they do a chopstick. I was talking to a Korean woman on the phone who had a complex about her skinny butt. She then used Beyonce as a model to compare herself to and explain how she thought she wasn't sexy. A beauty standard of any kind implies that there are people who don't meet it.

I love this post! Thanks for writing it.

A little background - I'm going to Korea in a few months and am worried about how my curvy half-Korean figure is going to be judged by Koreans. I don't mean that in any way to gloss over the horrible things that the US media does to women's minds, but I know that I'm bigger than the average Korean woman...

ㅋㅋㅋ...come on, her thighs are not thick, by the average women standard I mean. What is she? A six, eight maybe. You can't be saying a woman's thighs are thick and are loving them, unless, getting slapped is your idea of fun. You can say that about her ass, but never about her thighs; might as well say that she's fat. Out of curiosity, who do you think has the perfect set of thighs, not too thick and not too thin?
As for "flower boy," I wouldn't date a guy I can beat up silly, and that's the way it should be.

Well, I think both are true. ㅋㅋ

Beyonce has some thick thighs. We all know that. And most of us in the know definitely appreciate that. No one here's hatin' on B.

And yeah, on the size difference issue, I also kinda agree, since that issue about height and width relative to the girl does come up a lot – being either taller or much wider than your boyfriend is something much more possible here, and what I hear vocalized both in person and in pop culture. I have on female friend who said she was really happy to have met a taller man than her previous bf, since she couldn't wear heels around him, since she was like 3 inches taller than him, which he apparently didn't like much.

But on the other hand, now, since many girls like the "flower boy" aesthetic, the lines btw male and female are definitely blurring more these days.

Not saying that's bad or good, but just an interesting thign going on these day.

FMS,
So, Beyonce's thighs are kind of "thick" huh... Let's face it, 50% of the problem is many Korean guys are just too damn skinny. Do I really want my thighs to be thicker than those of my boyfriend?

I hope they're ready, but you know what? It's up to the women to say "the hell with this shit" and get a clue.

If I were concerned about Korea's perspective on my jelly, I would have left years ago.
