The "On the Streets" column takes a close look at particular spaces and places in Seoul. It could be a neighborhood, an area, or a small store. But whatever and wherever it is, it will surely be a place that will tell you more about the fashion and feeling of Korean life.

이 "길거리에서" ("On the Streets")이란 컬럼이 서울의 특별한 동네, 공간, 장소를 자세히 보는 거예요. 이렇게 해서 서울사람이라도 새로운 눈으로 한국의 패션과 필링을 느낄 수 있는 거예요.

As my first post for Feet Man Seoul, I thought I would hit up my old neighborhood, Apkujeung. Surprisingly, Thursday nights are the nights to be out in Apku. I wasn’t sure what I would find the first night out, but I wanted to focus mostly on male fashion in Korea. Male fashion here is a Metro-Sexual’s dream: tight jeans, fitted shirts, accessories galore, man bags which are cuter than my own, meticulously styled/dyed hair, and even makeup and fingernail polish application.

우리는 서울 거리에서 잔뜩 뽐내고 있는 저 오래된 미국차에서 시선이 멈췄다.

Guys in Sweats
From the corner of my eye, I saw this guy with gray sweat pants, low cut striped shirt, gray hat, and tattoos all over his chest and arms. His look struck me as unusual-mostly because of his tattoos which are seen as kind of taboo in Korea because of their association with gangs here. But now it is becoming more common for men to get tattoos, although people might question what kind of work you do.

운동복 청년들

내 시선의 저쪽에서, 회색 운동복 바지에 스트라이프 티셔츠, 회색 모자, 그리고 거의 가슴과 팔을 뒤덥은 문신을 가진 청년이 있었으니… 한국에서는 대개 조폭 쯤은 되어야 할법한 문신이었기 때문에, 예사롭지 않은 이 청년, 내 시선을 사로 잡았다. 하지만 사람들의 여러 의혹에도 불구하고, 요즘은 남자들 사이에서 문신은 좀더 일반적이 된것같긴 하다.

LOVE the pockets in the front!! Tattoo Guy had a friend with a cool look as well. I dubbed him- Baseball Cap Guy.

앞주머니를 어찌나 좋아하시던지….문신 청년은 멋진 모습의 친구와 같이 잇었는데, 그 친구는 야구모자 사나이로 부르는게 좋을듯…

Apparently they had just got done working out at nearby California Fitness. If this is what they wear when they work out, I’m wondering what they look like when they’re really trying!

분명 근처의 California Fitness에서 방금 나온듯 해 보인다. 만약에 이 옷이 그들이 운동할때 입는 옷이라면, 나는 그들이 운동할때 어떤 모습일지 궁금하다.

Checking out the tatoos: a Native American Girl and some strange symbols I’ve never seen before. What’s the story behind each tattoo?

문신을 살펴보자: 미국사람인 나는 여태껏 이런 이상한 무늬를 본적이 없다. 이들의 문신은 어떤의미일까?

The swirely symbols on the chest are hot. I asked Tattoo Guy what his mother thought of his tattoos. He said that she didn’t really like them. He must be pretty brave because Korean moms can be scary!

가슴에 쇠사슬 모양은 뜨거움을 나타낸다고 한다. 나는 문신청년에게 그의 엄마는 그의문신을 어떻게 생각하냐고 물었다. 그는 그의 엄마가 문신을 좋아하시지 않는다고 말했다. 그 청년은 한국 엄마들이 놀랄수 있기 때문에 더 용감한 척 해야했다.

Baseball Cap Guy had a funny hat- “Don’t Sell Me a Dog…Drugstore Cowboy.” You gotta love the random English on Korean clothes and accessories. This one is actually pretty good.

야구모자청년은 재미난 모자를 갖고 있었는데.. " 나를 팔지 말세요. 개… 약국 카우보이" 너는 닥치는대로 쓰인 영어의 한국인들의 옷과 악세서리를 좋아해왔다. 이게 진짜 멋지다.

Model Citizens
I spotted two tall legged girls with cool looks by the Rock & Roll Bar. I chased them down before they got away. Turns out the girls were models.

모범("model")국민

Rock & Roll Bar 근처에서 롱다리의 두 아가씨들을 찍기위해 쫓아갔다. 알고보니 모델이었다.

 Hippie Chick was rocking a casual look with her long straight hair, baggy white shirt and maroon pants, black flip flops, big black bag, and oversized sun glasses. Wearing sun glasses at night is a look I’ve seen several times in Korea from men and women alike. Although, I don’t know how safe this trend is.

히피아가씨는 긴 생머리, 헐렁한 하얀 티셔츠, 그리고 적갈색 바지, 까망 쪼리, 커다란 까만 가방, 그리고 복고풍 왕 썬글라스와 함께 캐쥬얼을 멋지게 소화해내고 있었다. 밤에 끼는 썬글라스…한국에서 간간히 여자들이나 남자들이 끼는걸 보긴 했지만 얼마나 괜찮은건지 아직 확신이…

Polka-Dot Girl was sportin’ dark skinny jeans, polka dot sweater over white tank-top, white converses, gray headband, hoop earrings, white elephant necklace, white lined inner lid, and a nice big metallic bag. A nice mix of casual and dressy. Polka-Dot Girl also had cool white nail polish. White nail polish is like last year’s black nail polish. I tried this trend when I went clubbing last night and got compliments on it.

명랑 땡땡이 아가씨! 어두운 스키니 진, 하얀 탑 위에 맞춰입은 변화 무쌍한 땡땡이 스웨터, 하양 컨버스, 회색 헤어밴드, 왕링 귀걸이, 올~ 하양 코끼리 목걸이, 눈 안쪽의 하얀색 포인트 라인, 꽤 멋져보이는 메탈풍의 가방… 캐주얼과 드레시의 멋진 조화라고나 할까..명랑 땡땡이 아가씨는 멋진 하양 네일아트를 하고 있었는데, 작년 말의 까망네일아트 같은 느낌이었다. 지난밤 클럽에서 이 스타일 살짝 시도했었는데, 프흡~ 으쓱했다는…^^

The Red Couple
A lot of couples in Korea like to match-whether on purpose or by accident. When I asked them if they deliberately matched the girl’s purse to her boyfriend’s tie, they said it was a coincidence. But what a great coincidence it was!

빨강 커플

연출한 경우도 있고, 우연히 맞은 경우도 있지만, 많은 한국 커플들은 맞춰입길 좋아하는것 같다. 여자 친구의 지갑과 남자친구의 넥타이를 일부러 맞춘것이냐고 물었더니, 그냥 우연이었다고… 그러나 이정도면 완벽한 우연 아니겠수!

Note: Every man should have a pair of really nice black AND brown shoes in his wardrobe. These are an example of really great brown shoes to have. I have seen Korean men pair brown shoes with black pants many times. Although skeptical of mixing brown and black at first, this is a great look.

남자라면 괜찮은 검정색 뿐 아니라 브라운 구두도 긴장에 함께 갖추고 있어야 하지 않을까? 정말 나이스한 브라운 구두의 예시가 여기 있으니 참고 하시길… 나는 여러차례 한국 남자들의 까만 바지와 갈색구두를 보았다. 처음에는 까만색과 갈색의 혼합을 이상하게 생각했지만, 지금은 멋진 코디라고 생각한다.

Fabulous Red Tie with Swirls!

The girl looked liked a cuter version of Elvira with her black satiny shirt, skirt, hair, and white face. Some Korean girls deliberately make themselves appear whiter in the face by applying special whitening makeup.

여자친구는 까망 새틴 블라우스와 스커트, 하얀 메이크업과 함께 Elvira보다 쫌더 귀여워 버젼 같아보였다. 몇몇 한국여자들의 경우 스페셜한 화이트닝 메이크업으로 좀더 하얗게 보이게 하려고 노력하는듯 하다.

Purple-licious was wearing a very Korean Fashion look with a baggy top pulled in with a belt and layered over a skirt. What made it different was the color. This is a nice change from the black, white, gray, or tan colors that show up a lot.

보라보라아가씨는 벨트를 이용하는 센스로 헐렁한 탑과 스커트 위로 레이어드를 만들어 아주 한국스러운 패션 연출. 그녀를 달라보이게 한건 바로 컬러! 검정, 화이트, 그레이 등등의 어두운 색깔 일색에서의 아주 멋진 변화였다.

This purple color is very in this season. It would also be very good on a jacket or sweater dress.

이 보라색은 요즘 같은 계절에 딱! 아마도 자켓이나 스웨터 드레스에도 잘 어울릴것 같은…

These days, most Korean girls in Kangnam have nicely manicured and painted toe nails. She’s no exception.

요즘 대부분 강남의 아가씨들에게는 꽤나 멋진 네일아트와 페티큐어가 대새인데, 여기서도 예외는 아니었다.

 The Circle Models
Next was the scene in front of the very posh Circle Club. As soon as we got there, we saw a group of very cool looking people. Turns out they were models as well.

다음 사진은 멋진써클이다. 우리가 그곳에 가자마자 아주 멋진 스타일의 사람들의 모임을 보았다. 그들이 모델임을 잘 알수 있었다.

I nick-named them: Lacoste Shoe Chick, Marc Jacobs Bag Guy, Sweater Dress Gal, and Bow Tie Boy.

나는 그들에게 별명을 지어 주었다 :라코스테 신발 아가씨, 제이콥스가방 청년, 스웨터원피스소녀, 그리고 리본타이 청년.

Lacoste Shoe Chick was rocking her long white tank top layered over a black tank top, white watch, long jeweled- necklace, and dark denim skinny jeans.

라코스테 신발 소녀는 검은 나시위에 걸쳐서 헐렁한 긴 흰 나시와 하얀시계, 긴 보석 목걸이, 그리고 어두운 스키니 청바지를 입었다.

LOVE the shoes! Normally I don’t really like the Lacoste brand, but lately they’ve been coming out with some good things-these would be two of them.

신발이 너무 좋아! 나는 보통 라코스테 브랜드를 좋아하지 않는데, 최근에 몇가지 마음에 드는 좋은 것들이 있다.

We spotted another target in front of Circle. He looked like he wanted some attention so I happily gave it to him.

This guy’s dark blue Audi convertible is an accessory for him. I give him props for choosing a car color that is not white, silver, or black, which about 90% of all cars in Korea seem to be.

그 청년에게는 남색의 천장을 접을수 있는 아우디차가 악세사리였다. 나는 그에게 차색깔을 한국에서 90%이상 볼수있는 흰색, 은색, 또는 검은색을 고르지 않은 것에 대해서 칭찬했다.

I love the fitted shirts in Korea. Oftentimes in the United States, men will wear shirts that are a size too big for them. I have no idea why they do that-it looks horrible. A fitted shirt is sexy. Pair it with dark denim and awesome accessories-even sexier.

나는 한국에서 몸에 붙는 셔츠를 좋아한다. 미국에서 종종 남자들이 그들에게 맞는 큰 사이즈의 셔츠를 입을 것이고, 나는 그 모습이 왜 이렇게 싫은지 모르겠다. 몸에 붙는 셔츠는 섹시한데..어두운 청바지와 쌍으로 몸에 붙는 셔츠 그리고 멋진 악세서리까지 더 섹시하다.

Besides his car, Audi Guy has some cool accessories. I loved his black watch, silver bracelet, and necklace. I absolutely LOVED his belt buckle though. The light blue and orange stripes add a nice dash of color.

그에게는 그의 멋진 아우디차에, 게다가 멋진 악세서리가 있다. 그의 검은 시계, 은팔찌, 목걸이는 너무 멋졌다. 나는 그의 버클 벨트를 절대적으로 사랑하지 않을수 없었다. 밝은 파란색과 오렌지의 줄무늬는 그의 멋진 색감을 한층 더 돋보이게 했다.
