fashion is fetish is fabulous is fun is fantastic!
“Fabulous Fashionistas”
In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don’t choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designer labels attached to their bodies, but because they’ve managed to create their own unique style that one can’t simply pass by without wanting to remember.
OK. Normally, I don’t like leggings. The 80’s died, and I like them dead. Leggings that only go partially into the shoe – stirrups, yuck! – I hate even worse. When I think of stirrups, I think of jelly shoes, the roller skating rink, and little Melissa such-and-such breaking my middle school heart with a coolly cruel note. Arrrrrgh!
I apologize. These are my personal issues, and I still need to deal with them. Still, it makes clear how much I dislike any suggestions of stirrups and leggings and such, which have been back in fashion for some time. Grrrr. That being said, somehow, this young lady was so funkily well-coordinated that I had to begrudgingly admit that they looked good on her.
She makes looking casual look easy, but she definitely put thought into what she was wearing. She also seems like the precursor of that oxfords trend they say is coming; I think it will hit the Korean streets looking preppie, brown or black flats, and a lot like the shoes she’s wearing, as opposed to true oxfords. And I hope, for my sanity’s sake, that more women will intelligently coordinate and use leggings, unlike some of the stuff I saw last season. Please, for the love of all that’s holy, no more leggings with sandals! Please!!!
I think our fashiontastic Ewha undergrad knows – wearing leggings and stocking that way just looks funny. You have to coordinate carefully, right?
Yeah, she knows!
And way to rock the camera-as-fashion-accessory! Many Korean girls are doing these days, but she’s really got it down. Work it!

wow this is interesting..in vancouver, canada .. flats and leggins has been popular ever since last year spring till this summer .. its very comfortable espicially wearing it with the ugg boots for winter.
woah, that’s the most stylish biochem major I’ve seen! I wish she was in my classes when I was in biochem. I guess I’ll wait until she comes to grad school in the states. I’m only 23 so she could be in my school in a few years, right? right? I hope??
I think what really makes it work here what she’s NOT doing with the leggings. If you’re going to wear leggings, please do NOT use them in any of the following ways:
a)Under a cutsy, girly, princess outfit because it’s cold outside
b)Under a skirt or dress cut too short to decently wear in public
c)Under a 1980’s Flashdance oversize T-shirt or sweater
A & B are just wrong. Buy something long enough to wear in public and stop subjecting us to the evil leggings. And remember that the idea is “mix and match” not “scar the eyes of passersby”
C is just way, way too much 1980’s. The rule is: if you can remember wearing the original item in the original decade, you should not be wearing it now. Those of us who wore acid wash jeans and layered our neon socks in elementary school to be cool are old enough to know better now.
What really DOES make it work here is how she’s using the leggings with a very modern cut of clothes and neutral palate. By keeping the cut fairly clean and the colors muted, she can pull of the funky layering effect without it seeming too contrived or too much. also, she balances the bulking effect of the layered stockings with accessories up top like the keen little scarf. She’s also really petite, which helps keep her look from getting too outsized.
All in all, a perfect way to say “fall” while still keeping with the warmer weather.
