한국에서만 보일 수 있는 거네요. 언니들! 우리도 미니스커트 좋아하는데 그래도 언제 입는지 그 걸 좀 생각해봐야 되겠네요. 대부분 한국사람들이 미국을 보고 우리가 "야하다"고 "개방적이다"고 생각하는데 실제로 미국에 가본 사람들이 그 거 아닌 줄 알아요. 어디서나처럼 미국의 TV, 영화, 뮤직비디오들은 현실하고 틀리죠. 특히 보수적인 미국의 보통생활을 느껴보면 알 수 있어요. 교회, 결혼식, 캠퍼스, 그리고 공식 행사나 인터뷰할 때는 똥코치마는 절대로 안되는 거죠.

비지니스 분위기인데 이 사진에서 무릎밑으로 내려가는 스커트 하나라도 있나요?

미국에서 아에 없다는 거아닌데 그래도 보통 한국에 온 미국/캐나다/많은 유럽 남자끼리 얘기하면 딱 이 말이 나와요: "한국에서 다 이렇게 입어요?" 보통 "구경거리 많다"고 생각들하는데 그리고 그 사람 입장에서 보면 맞아요: 한국에서는 그런 그 패션/저 패션 언제언제 입는지 딱 구별하는 개념을 좀 떠러져요.

많이 놀랐던 건 한국에서 결혼식에 가면 너무 캐쥬얼하게 간 사람들이 많고. 대학교 강의실에 들어가는 여성들 보면 술집여자만큼 짧은 미니 입는 애들이 많아요. 아까 문장 때문에 기분 나쁘게 받아들일 수 있지만 나는 그런 생각이 솔직이 들어요. 아마 미국인이라서 좀 보수적인 편인 줄아는데 대학교에서 하이힐과 미니스커트를 입는 데아니라고 생각해요.

유학으로 미국에 갔다온 한국여성한테 물으보면 그런 "패션 차이"에 대해서 얘기가 나올 수 있어요. 한국식으로 옷 입고 개강 날에 첫 강의에 다니러 가는데 화장품, 미니스커트, 높은 힐을 신고 들어가는데 애들이 다 처다봐요. 특히는 미국 학생 스타일은 대부분 아주 캐주얼하니까요. 텔레비젼이나 영화를 보지 말고 직접 한국에 와있는 캐나다/미국인 보면 알 수 있잖아요. 우리가 대부분 청바지/티셔츠를 많이 입는 문화이라서요.

꼭 "미국식으로 하라"고 하는 의도로 얘기하는 거아니고 그냥 한국인한테 이 사실에 대해서 알리는 거예요. 한국사람들이 대부분 한국은 "보수적"이라고 생각하는데 많은 서양인들이 반대로 생각하는 거예요. 우리 입장에서 그리고 우리의 아는 현실(매스콤에서 나오는 가실 말고)하고 비교하면 한국여성 패션은 아주 야하다고 생각합니다.

추운 겨울에 눈이 내려오면서 한국외에 미니스커트를 입고다니는 여자들을 길거리에서 보일 수 있는 나라가 어디 있어요? ㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 그 건 미국에서 보기 힘든 거예요.

I always talk about this with Korean folks, as well as with Americans in Korea – as much as people think Americans the most "risqué" or "liberal" people in the world, we are actually a pretty conservative country, especially when it comes to dress.

If you look at the actual America – and not through television, movies, and music videos – you'll see that we're pretty much a blue jeans and t-shirt, casual fashion culture. Korea is very formal, as well as a place where women dress to look as good as possible all the time, so the atmosphere is different.

It wouldn't be unusual to wear makeup to go the grocery store, and only 10 years ago, you'd often hear about women who woke up before their husbands to put on makeup, lest they be seen "naked."

Point is, Americans tend to divide pretty clearly between casual and formal events, and weddings, graduation ceremonies, conferences, and business interviews are strictly formal; and miniskirts are generally not considered appropriate in these environments. Even in fairly casual environments, miniskirts would be a no-no; the college classroom is generally considered one of these places.

Simply put, wearing high heels and a miniskirt is considered too formal and too sexual for the classroom. Ask many Korean women who've gone to the US to study, and they'll likely be able to tell you a story of some Korean exchange student who got up in her Saturday best for the first day of class – makeup, miniskirt, and heels – and got to campus, only to be stared at by all the American students.

This is not to say Koreans have to do what Americans do when it comes to fashion in Korea. However, it should be interesting to note that, contrary to what many Koreans (along with much of the rest of the world) think, many Americans actually see Korean female fashion styles as far more wild than anything we've seen back home.

Of course, to each, her own. But I still think that a super-miniskirt is inappropriate business or dress attire. Maybe I'm too much the conservative American in thinking this way, but that's a social fashion line that I think inappropriate to cross. Sure, people are free to do what they want, but I wouldn't wear a mullet or a muscle shirt to a job interview, and I think the super-miniskirt should stay in the dance club or night spot, where it belongs.
