뉴욕 시에서 가장 앞선 여성 음악가인 디제이 렉시는 미국의 다른 지역과 해외에서도 그 인기가 급상승하고 있다. 뉴욕 양키즈이건, 삭스 피프트 애비뉴 행사건 간에 공연할 때 마다 두말할 필요 없이 성공적이었다.

이 음악가는 힙합, 레게, 80년대 스타일, 펑크 앤 소울, 락, 살사, 하우스 음악등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 자신만의 스타일을 구가하고 있다. 항상 댄스 프로어를 염두에 두듯 그녀의 음악들은 독창성이 묻어난다. 장르와 시대를 자연스레 넘나들면서 디제이 렉시는 자신의 시대 훨씬 이전의 음악에 대한 광범위한 지식으로 관객들을 매번 놀라게 한다. 클럽에서 춤을 즐기는 대부분의 사람들에게는 레코드 더미 속에서 왜소한 백인 여성이 머리를 흔들면서 판을 가는 모습은 좀 처럼 보기 드문 광경인 것이 사실이다.

On top of all that talent she's got a fierce sense of style. It's funky, cute, punk, and glam all together. Dj Lexey studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) before getting into the music industry, and her knowledge and love for fashion shows. She's always flaunting some kind of fabulousness behind the decks, and even on the runway or behind the camera.

게다가 그 모든 재주 말고도 자신만이 치열하게 내뿜는 스타일이 있다. 펑키하고 귀여우면서도 화려하고 눈부시다. 러시아에서 온 디제이 렉시는 뉴욕에서 디자인을 공부하다 음악산업에 뛰어들었다. 패션을 사랑하는 그녀는 항상 뭔가가 새롭고 신비로운 것을 만들어 내는데 열성이다.

1. High-heels or flats? 하이힐 or 단화?

I guess it all depends. I love my heels and boots to go out but if I'm working a six hour set I would opt for some flats.

상황에 따라 다르지만, 놀러나갈 땐 힐이나 부츠를 자주 신고 일할때는 단화를 신는 편이다.

2. What makes a fabulous shoe? 간지나는- 멋진 신발을 만드는 조건?

A great fit and a great outfit.

발에 딱 맞아야 하고 옷과 잘 어울려야 한다.

3. How many pairs of shoes should a woman own? 대부분 여자들은 몇 켤레의 신발을 갖고 있나요?

As many as she can afford.

주머니 사정이 허락하는 한 많이 사 모은다.

4. How many pairs of shoes do you own? 몇 켤레의 신발을 당신은 갖고 있나요?

Wow… ok going to go count…. 103.

우와~. 일단 세보면… 103켤레정도.

5. What's the most you're willing to pay for a pair of shoes? 당신이 신발을 볼 때 가장 신경쓰는 것은?

Depends on the shoe. Sometimes you just have to have it.

신발마다 다르다. 가끔씩은 그냥 이유 없이 갖고 싶어서 산다.

6. What do you do in your shoes? What is your occupation? your interests/hobbies/activities? 당신의 신발을 신고 어떤 것을 하나요? 당신의 직업은 무엇인가요? 당신의 관심사/취미/활동들 은 무엇인가요?

I do a lot of walking in the city so comfort is a must, but style is important too. I'm a dj by night.

길거리를 자주 활보하기 때문에 일단 편해야 하지만 스타일도 중요하다. 밤에는 디제이 일을 한다.

7. Which pair of shoes do you wear the most? the least? Why? 어떤 신발을 가장 자주 신나요? 가장 안신는 신발은 어떤 것? 이유?

I rotate them. Usually when I get a new pair I'll wear them for a while and then switch to a new pair. I picked up some vintage purple suede boots. They're my favorite right now. Very Prince. The least… probably the ones that have given me blisters in the past.

돌아가면서 신는다. 보통 새 신을 사면 한동안 그것만 신다가 또 새 신으로 간다. 빈티지 수에드 부츠를 샀는데 현재 내가 가장 즐겨신는다. 아주 프린스스럽다. 제일 안 신는 것은 신었을 때 발이 까진 신발들일 것이다.

8. I believe every pair of shoes has a fascinating history. What's the story behind your favorite pair? 신발마다 다 사연이 있을 것 같은데, 가장 좋아하는 신발은?

I buy a lot of my shoes from vintage stores. They're still in amazing shape and they are worn in so you don't have to do it yourself. You just jump right into their prime… haha. So I'm sure a lot of my shoes have had their own stories before they landed on my feet.

I have a great pair of winter boots. The day I bought them I wore them out that night. It was around New Year's… sometime in December. We must have gone out to six different places that night. The last one we stayed in until the wee hours of the morning. When me and my friends walked outside the whole city was transformed. There had been a massive blizzard that went through the city and we missed the whole thing. Just walked out to a downpour of snow and nearly a foot on the ground. It was very surreal. No cars had even passed yet to mess up the smooth surface, but we made sure to take care of that. We walked on 5th Ave in the middle of the road stomping our own path. The boots lasted and kept my feet dry so they're definitely still one of my favorites.

주로 빈티지 샾에서 많이 구입하는데 오래가고 이미 오래되었기 때문에 발에 익숙하다. 내가 샀을 땐 이미 신발의 전성기에 와있다. (웃음) 내가 사기도 전에 이미 사연이 많았을 것이다.

멋진 겨울부츠가 있는데 구입한 날 바로 신고 나갔다. 12월쯤이었다. 그날 하루에 여섯군데를 돌아다녔는데 마지막 장소에서는 동이 틀 때까지 있었다. 친구들과 밖으로 나갔더니 도시전체가 달라졌다. 그 동안 밖에서는 심한 눈보라가 날렸던 모양인데 구경도 못했다. 눈이 흠뻑 내리는데 밖으로 한발을 내디뎠더니 움푹 들어갈 정도로 눈이 쌓였다. 정말 초현실적이었다. 그 부드러운 눈위를 차 한대 지나가지 않은 상태였다. 그 광경을 망치고 싶지 않아서 피프스 애비뉴 길 중앙으로 성큼성큼 걸어 길을 헤쳐나갔다. 부츠는 오래갔고 눈이 스며들지 않아 발이 젓지 않았다. 그래서 그 부츠를 아직도 제일 좋아한다.

9. Are there any fashion trends you dislike or even absolutely hate? 가장 싫어하는 패션 트렌드는?

I really don't like those chunky rubber flats. They look like clown shoes.

묵직하게 두꺼운 고무신발들은 정말 싫다. 광대 신발 같아 보인다.

10. Which pair is your favorite?

My new purple suede Prince shoes.
