This past weekend, at comedian Pak Kyeong-rim’s wedding, it was on, girlfriends. The battle of the minidresses, or as they’re called in Korean – the “one-piece.” And all the stars and starlets showed up looking pretty fab and fresh, and nearly everyone was riding the trends, as stars and their stylists are wont to do: cool minidresses and clutch purses, for the most part.
And a note to the photographers – how can you judge the fashion without the shoes?! Hello? Grrr. I’ve linked to the original articles in which the pictures appeared at the bottom of each section.
Jang Na-ra was looking quite gold and glamourous, I must say, and stop looking coy! You know you look good, girl. But Hyo-ri! I don’t know what to say about the dress – kinda “ehh” – but the dead-cream-butterfly-on-the-black-clutch-bag…I’m not feeling it. Doesn’t she look like she’s kinda apologizing with her eyes?
Han Hyo-ju and Hwang Bo-ra were looking good, and I love Bo-ra’s long bag. Shiny, shiny! Lee Su-yeong dressed to…umm…not really stand out. What can one say?
Hyeon Yeong looked kinda scared and like she forgot to bring any purse or accessories, but otherwise looks wedding-worthy; Jo Jeong-rin and Sol-bi look like two flower girls and also fairly uninteresting, but added to the overall mini-dress action.
Newly-reconstructed Yangpa looked crumpled-but-cool, with her riveted metal clutch looking quite robotronic. Cha Hye-rin, on the other hand, looked quite refined-yet-non-descript, and also sported her requisite bit of “futurism.”
Kim Ah-joong was looking, well…pretty uncomfortable with herself, as well as her quirky (and short!) miniskirt and weird open-chested sweater-thing; she looks like she’s thinking about making a dash for the door, and makes me uncomfortable. Jeong Seo-hee looked like she had thrown the top part of a weird suit over her casual outfit and grabbed a random bag on the way out the door. I wish I could have seen her shoes – and that the photographers at Newsen knew what they were doing, or the photo editors, at any rate.
Kang Hye-jeong wins the booby prize for not knowing that you’re supposed to dress up for star-studded events, especially people’s weddings – guess she didn’t get the memo. Pak Shin-hye just looks…frumpy. Too many competing frills up there, I dare say.
I’d say that the overall winner – despite rocking black bows on three separate places on her body (neck, purse, and shoes) – for looking interesting, summery cool, and just plain appropriate for a wedding was Jang Na-ra.
I thought that listening to her cotton-candy songs was excruciating (yet somehow addictive) and I never rocked out to her music; but she was looking fly in that her style and personality seemed to match the clothes she was wearing that day.
And I LOVE the bag, girlfriend! (Check out the bag in the first picture at the top of this page.)
One thing I’d like to say to Newsen photographers – could you expose properly with the outdoor shots next time? Most of the photos were so overexposed, you could barely see what anyone was wearing. And since shoes makes the fashion, please don’t leave them out, mmm-kay?

Join MissKoco and her sis, Miss30000, and FMS bringing up the rear on an audio tour of Doota!, the most popular shopping mall in Dongdaemun, set right smack in the middle of the fashion shopping district of Seoul, South Korea.
The audio tour starts right in front of the building, and you can get to the building itself from either the subway Line 4 Dongdaemun stop (exit #8) or the Lines 2, 4, 5 Dongdaemun Stadium stop (exit #14).
We went right down to the B1 level, where we met a friendly and fabulous young lady who was really happy to explain not only about the store in which she was working, but oriented us a bit as to other cool places to go.
The store in which she’s working is “Bloom” and since it doesn’t have a web site, it most accessible from (02) 3398-7090.
Doota!
We then went up to the first and main floor in the building, where most of the contemporary and normal fashion is – where you’d go if you were a 20 or 30-something woman. The B1 level is a bit wilder and younger, depending on who you are. Stuff you might wear on a date or to work would be more ground level fare.
The woman in the “Top Shop” (that’s the name of their store, not a description) near the front of the building really helped out with an interview that laid down how the system at Doota! works.
One thing you can count on in Doota! is set prices, which sits especially well with foreign customers. Since many other places don’t have this policy, and even many Koreans don’t know about it – since Dongdaemun is well known for having no real set prices and traditionally had done things “street market” style – they have a prepared sign in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese.
Then we went on up to the 4th floor, which is where Doota! has its strength – shoes. This is truly “Korea, Sparkling” – right here. We got a pick of a pair at the store where one helpful owner gave us another interview that surprised even Miss 30000, since she didn’t know that you could get any shoe, any design, altered and fitted to pretty much any human foot. That’s good to know.
And finally, we went to the 5th floor, which has more glitter and sparkle than a crack-smoking fairy sprite on acid. Another friendly worker helped us out when we talked about accessories, and made me pretty thirsty, what with all the orange around the place. I really wanted a mango smoothie afterwards.
It was our first attempt, but came together pretty well in editing, and was informative in terms of how to do them much, much better in the future.

They are supposed to keep your foot from slipping and make heels more comfortable for only 2,000 Won! Later on that same day we came across Dr. Scholl’s version of the same product for 10,000W. We win!
Unfortunately, I don’t think they really work. They worked for about 30 minutes and then they started to move around in my shoe. That was more annoying than just the shoe slipping.

“Street Peeps” are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, “Who are you and what do you do?” Perhaps it’s their fashion; perhaps it’s their attitude; often, it’s just a feeling that there’s something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do. And what we keep realizing that you should never judge a book by its cover. Most importantly, we realize that perfect strangers are often much more interesting that you might think, but are very much like you and me.
MissKoco and I met Miss Orange while walking around Hyehwa, where she was quite visible in her orange top and serious camera. Her style was bright and loud, and her seeming photographic and perhaps (?) artistic interest caught our eye.
Cap, ribbons, purple bow, big belt and buckle, and serious camera – Miss Orange isn’t just your normal college coed; and when we asked, she turned out to be an undergraduate studying animation and an avid photographer. That’s some serious glass she’s got there.
Artistic, self-confident, and not afraid to express yourself through one’s own sense of fashion – we find that to be pretty cool. And while rockin’ the hoop earrings and bubblegum ring, she just looks both fresh and friendly, and just another one of the great people who populate the streets of Seoul.
