국내 대표 여성그룹 원더걸스가 포스터 이벤트에 이어 깜찍한 모습을 선보여 팬들의 시선을 고정시켰다.

원더걸스 멤버 소희가 80년대 어린이들의 최고의 놀이감이었던 종이인형으로 변신한 것.

토요일 서울시내 곳곳에 배포된 종이인형은 소희가 자신의 황금비율의 몸매를 살려 인형 모델로 변신, 팬들에게 스쿨룩과 원더우먼 의상 등 다양한 옷과 소품을 직접 코디할 수 있는 즐거움을 선사했다.

이번 종이인형 이벤트는 10대 팬들뿐만 아니라 시민들에게도 아주 호의적인 반응을 얻었다. 한 20대 여 회사원은 “제가 자라던 80년대에 정말 유행했던 놀이거든요. 정말 감회가 새로워요”라고 호감을 보였다.

진짜 스마트하다! 레트로 룩만아니라 원더걸즈를 20대와 30대까지는 좋아할 수 있는 이유가 생기는 거예요. 노스탈지아 마케팅 최고! 박진영씨 알까? 브리트니 스피즈의 앨범을 많이 산 20/30대는 어느정도 노스탈지아 때문에 산 거예요. 혹시 자기는 고등학생 때 브리트니의 룩은 바로 그 좋아했던 치어리더. 내 생각엔 ‘롤리타의 황상’보다는 자기는 고등학생 때 생각난 좋아했던 이쁜 그녀. 딱 그 룩이였어. 그냥 ‘롤리타’만 좋아한 거면 맨디 모어, 그리고 수 많은 브리트니를 카피한 가수들을 좋아했을 거예요. 근데 다 안 됐잖아요. 진영씨가 이렇게 원더걸즈하고 홍보하는 건 - 아주 스마트하다. 진짜.

SparQeen, since you said you liked So-hee so much, it seems the public is agreeing with you. They’re promoting a paper cutout doll of So-hee, seemingly the most popular member of the new pop sensation being promoted by Pak Jin-yeong – The Wonder Girls. It has a “school look” as well as the signature, miniature version of Wonder-Woman-as-a-girl.

Apparently, it’s not just for kids. It also has touched a nostalgia nerve with older people in their 20’s (and I would also venture to guess their 30’s), who remember playing with just these kind of paper cutout figures back when they were kids. These kinds of paper cutout collectibles were quite popular here in Korea, and included figures from Atom to Taekwon to Wonder Woman herself.

Another very smart, very savvy, retro move on Park’s part. Good marketing, good taste, and fabulous fashion!

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don’t choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they’ve managed to create their own unique style that one can’t simply pass by without wanting to remember.

우리 이대 근처에 있었는데 졸업날였어요. 우연히 지나간 여자를 봤는데 특이한 아주 하이 하이힐을 신고 있었고 샾한 원피스를 입고 있었고 가방도 이쁜 거예요. 그리고 그냥 걸어가는 거아니고 진짜 흘러가는 것처럼 지나간 거예요. 그래서 당연히 우리 패션 인터퓨와 촬영 신청했죠!

We were in the Ewha area for graduation day when we spotted someone who, at first glance, seemed pretty normal; yet, to those who pay attention to fashion, there was something peculiar about the young lady passing by. Her dress was nice, as was the cute little purse she had to match it. But it’s not too often you find someone sporting 13 cm (5-inch) heels and still able to not only walk in them, but carry it off well!

요즘에 한국에서는 하이힐들이 높은 편이지만 사진에서 나온 힐은 좀 특별하죠? 그래서 이 언니를 잡고 찍었는데 얘기를 조금 나누었어요. 13센티이고 그리고 그냥 신으면 키가 높게 되기 뿐만아니라 ㅇ주 높은 힐을 되게 좋아한다고 하셨네요. 그리고 이 언니의 눈이 청확한 것같아요. 안젤리나 졸리가 비슷한 것도 있으니까요. 아니면 전설적인 베티 페이지? 사실 이 신발을 보면 그런 생각났어요.

Korean heels are high these days, but it’s rare to see heels this high. So we decided to ask her to pose for a shot, since her choice in shoes seemed quite particular. Her heels reminded us of those worn by Bettie Page, in terms of shape, style, and height.

근데 이 한국 버전은 조금 한국화된거죠. 미국만큼 ‘섹시‘한 느낌을 좀 줄이기를 위해 리븐을 추가한 거고 앞코도 좀 넓이 나오고 rounded이예요. 아무리 높아도 일반 여성들이 신은 하이힐은 조금 ‘귀여움’의 중심이예요.

Our fashionista’s heels are not, of course, nearly 7 inches, and they are quite Koreanized with a cute bow, which sort of cancels some of the “naughty” feel of the shoe, which otherwise might be a bit too sexy for everyday use.

그리고! 오해하지 말아요! 이 언니는 베티 페이지처럼 ‘노티’하신 것아니예요. 착하신 이대에서 성악 전공하시는 젊은 singer이예요! 베티 페이지이랑 공동점은 신발만이예요. 좋은 거죠? 착한 학생인데 룩은 귀여운데 섹시한 포인트 딱 하나! 다른 식으로 해석하면 현대 이런바 ‘달페미니즘’의 시대에서는 똑똑하고 동립적인 여성들이 선택해서 아주 여성스럽거나 세시하게 하는 건 더이상 모순아니라고 생각하는 거예요.

But don’t get the wrong idea! This “Bettie Page” is not naughty, but quite nice – in fact, a proper young lady who is a classical vocal major at Ewha Women’s University, and for whom arts and music are her main inspiration. She only shares Bettie’s killer taste in shoes and the “post-feminist” sense of being able to both smart as well as sexy.

근데 우리 ‘베티‘ 언니는 자기 발 건강을 위해 이런 신발 가끔씩만 신기 바래요. 그렇게 건강을 잘 지키면 실제로 한국의 베티 페이지가 되시는 것아니고 한국의 ‘넥스트 조수미’가 될 수 있겠죠? 보통 가수들의 힘이 횡격막에서 나온다고 해요. 근데 스타일이 띄어가는 가수는 하이힐에서도 나오는 것아닌가 싶어요, 이 언니를 보니까. 앤젤리나 졸리도 그렇게 파워를 생기는 것아닌가요? ㅋㅋㅋ

We just hope that our “Bettie” keeps her feet healthy by saving the 13 cm heels for special occasions, and we wish her luck in becoming not actually Korea’s next Bettie Page, but perhaps the next Jo Sumi? People often wonder where singing divas get their energy; some say it’s in the spirit, while others simply remind us that the singer’s power lies in the diaphragm. Perhaps they never thought about the power of 5-inch heels? If that’s the case, then our Fabulous Fashionista is already well on her way to stardom!

어제 펜실베니아에 있는 킹 오브 프러시아 라는 쇼핑몰에 다녀왔어요. 여기 있는거는 미국에서 두번째로 큰 몰이라더군요! 어떻게 위치도 안좋은 펜실베니아에 그렇게 큰 체인이 생겼는지는 모르겠지만 무지무지 행복했어요! 마치 미국 대도시와 쇼핑에 눈을 뜬 기분이랄까! 어제 애버크롬비, 홀리스터, 아르마니 익스체인지 등등 여러 군데 돌아다녔는데 하나 눈에 확 띄는 스타일이 있어서 당장 feetmanseoul에 올려야겠다 라고 아이디어가 났지요!

Now that I am living in the U.S., I’ve got a chance to peep out into the styles on latest mode among American trend-setters. Yesterday, I went to the King of Prussia in Pennsylvania, the second biggest shopping mall branch in the States, and shopping there gave me an inspiration for this fashion forecasting article!

Daum에 텔레비존이나 네이버 해외 연예 뉴스 열심히 보는 사람들 알거에요~ 미국 할리우드 스타들 입는 스타일이 한국에서 몇 달있으면 유행이 되는거! 할리우드 패션만 따로 골라서 파는 온라인 쇼핑들도 많구, 그 스타일만 좋아하는 팬들도 많잖아요. 예를 들면, 얼마 전 끝났던 커피프린스 1호점에서 채정안 씨가 입고 나왔던 스타일~소매를 반쯤 대충 접은 하얀 셔츠하고 회색 계통의 스키니 진이나 예쁜 비지니스 수트 느낌의 치마를 입고 다니는 거 봤죠? 그리고 미니스커트하고 밑에 레깅스 신는건 이제 거의 트렌드 축에도 못끼는 오래된 패션이 되었죠ㅋㅋ 그 두가지 스타일만 봐도 미국에서 진작에 유행이 되고 있었고 많은 사람들이 좋아했었던 거랍니다.

You know, when you look into an American fashion trend whether from paparazzi photos of Hollywood stars, you can have a slight idea of what’ll be going on in a couple of months in Korea. For example, you’ve seen a lot of people on the street or even stars on TV who wear white or colored shirts with half-rolled sleeves along with either skinny jeans or office-girl skirt. That style has already been in fad in the U.S. way before it became popular among Korean people. Moreover, have you worn a miniskirt with leggings under it? This style also swept across the American metropolitan cities, and now it’s almost a cliche among American fashion leaders.

제가 어제 킹오브프러시아 몰에 가서 딱 찜해놨었던 거는, 요 밑에 남색 스웨터 블라우스! 완전 큐트하면서도 나름 정장 느낌으로 차분하게 입을 수 있어서 매우 실용적이라고 생각해요~ (사실 저는 이뻐도 특정한 날에만 입을 수 있다거나 자주 입기 곤란한 옷은 사지 않거든요ㅋ) 애버크롬비가 한국에서는 아는 사람들만 아는 좀 고가 브랜드에요. 그래서 처음 듣는 분들도 있으시겠지만, 미국에서는 고등학생부터 30대까지 너무너무 많이 사랑을 받는 유명하고 인기있는 중고가 브랜드입니다!

저도 미국에 왔을때만 해도 애들이 된장녀 같이 애버크롬비, 홀리스터 이쁘다 라고 얘기하는데 도대체 왜 그렇게 유명한거야? 라고 친구한테 물어본적이 있었어요. 근데 백 번 말보다 한번 직접 보는게 낫다고, 어제 애버크롬비를 가서 그 스타일에 홀딱 반해버렸습니다~ 애버크롬비는 그 중에도 레이스 달린 탱크탑이나 가을에 들어서는 밑에 것 같은 니트 가디건을 많이 내놓고 있어요. 싸구려 티 절대 안나고, 너무 캐주얼하지 않으면서 고급스럽고 귀여운 느낌을 내는 스타일이 주류입니다.

밑에 스웨터 블라우스 무지 귀엽죠? 크게 파인 U 모양의 칼라 때문에 많이 파인 탱크탑을 밑에 입어도 되고 겨울에는 터틀넥을 입어도 전혀 매치가 어긋나 보이지 않을 것 같아요. 그리고 크로스로 보이는 밴드랑 뒷면은 리본으로 매서 여성스럽지만 부담스럽기 보다 귀엽고 캐주얼해요. 밴드가 또 바로 가슴 밑에 있다보니까 다리도 길어보여서 키가 커보이게 해주구요. 버튼도 딱 하나 달려서 오히려 단추가 여러개로 달린 교복 가디건 같은 느낌도 안주구요. 제 친구는 회색으로 샀는데, 저는 아무래도 남색이 무진장 이쁜거 같아요~

At Abercrombie and Fitch, I just came across this gorgeous navy sweater blouse with a “herringbone ribbon taping” and a single button under the chest. I love dark-colored cotten-knit sweaters because they will make you look not only neat and dignified but also cute at the same time–besides, slim. The sleeves are long enough to barely cover your upper two thirds of your arms. There are also kind of similar types of this sweater blouse that have several buttons on the first-half top and band around the chest line so they will make you look pretty much tall.

미국 사람들 일반적으로 옷 못입는 줄 알았는데, 이런 이쁜 브랜드 옷들 보니까 무시 못하겠어요. 이 옷 보고 매우 끌리지 않나요? 몇 달 후에 한국 시장에 이런 스타일 유행할 거 같아요. 미리 체크하고, 찜해두어 보아요!

The King of Prussia has a varied range of clothes shops from Burberry to H&M. But I could see this style of sweater blouse is now in almost every store and is trying to become a must-have item for women in their 20s to 30s. I expect that many Koreans would be so much tempted to put on this adorable sweater blouse in a moment this fall!

Street Peeps는 우리들의 눈길을 끌고 질문을 던지게끔 호기심을 유발하는 이들을 가리킵니다. 아마도 그의 패션이나 태도 혹은 내면에 숨겨져 있는 뭔가가 느껴지기도 하겠죠. 전철 옆자리나 줄을 서서 대기하는 사람이나 혹은 길거리에서 스쳐 지나가는 이들처럼 우리 주변에는 주목할만한 인물이 많고 우리는 그들에게 말을 건내지 않지만 Street Peeps에서는 이 기회를 붙잡아 여러분들께 보여드립니다. 그들은 우리들의 생각보다 재미있고 특별한 동시에 우리와 비슷한 사람들이라는걸 깨달을 수 있어요.

“Street Peeps” are interesting people who, for some reason, catch our eye and make us want to ask, “Who are you and what do you do?” Perhaps it’s their fashion; perhaps it’s their attitude; often, it’s just a feeling that there’s something under the surface that we want to know about. All around us – sitting next to us on the subway, waiting behind us in line, walking past us in the street – there are fascinating and remarkable people, yet we never stop to talk to them. Well, we do. And what we keep realizing that you should never judge a book by its cover. Most importantly, we realize that perfect strangers are often much more interesting that you might think, but are very much like you and me.

저도 예전에는 모르는 사람에게 말을 거는게 너무 무서웠어요. 원래 성격이 소심하고 좀 싸이코같은 A형이라 혼자만의 세계에 갇혀 살았죠. 그래서 좀 더 성격을 바꿔보려고 노력중이예요. 마음을 열고, 상대방을 믿어주면서 말을 걸어보면 사실 대부분 친절하게 대해줘요. 길거리에서 fms와 사진을 찍다가 눈에 띄는 교복입은 학생들이 있어서 사진을 찍었죠.

제가 학생이었다면 아마도 너무 모범생이었기 때문에 아무도 사진을 찍자고 하지는 않았겠지만 아마 너무 무서워서 울었을거예요. (그정도로 소심했어요) 요즘은 교복 밑에 티셔츠 입는게 유행인가봐요. 저 때만 해도 이런건 상상도 못했죠. 뭔가 순진해 보이면서도 도발적이기도 한 이 작은 숙녀들을 거리에서 봤을 때 사진에 담고 싶다는 생각이 들었어요. 학생들이라 그런지 부담없이 귀여운 자세로 응해줘서 편했어요. 친구들끼리라 더 자유롭고 뭔가 희망에 찬 분위기 속에서 사진을 찍을 수 있었죠. 쿨한 작은 아가씨들에게 정말 고마웠어요.

As marketers everywhere know, the cool kids know what’s cool. And in Korea, schoolkids are big spenders in certain ways, and on certain things, because they have to work within constrictions (uniforms, school rules, somewhat strict social norms surrounding age), yet they make their choices en masse. Trends and looks travel through schools here in the same they do in other countries, but there is much more uniformity (excuse the unintentional pun). So when these kids make a choice, it tends to be of epic proportions. So don’t let the school uniforms fool you. These kids buy certain bags, certain shoes (Converses!), certain phones, etc. They have limited avenues for expression, so they make the most of them. Here’s a no brainer: Korean girls started wearing Converses looong before the older kids in their 20’s started doing it.

쿨한 학생들만 알 수 있는 특별한 아이템이 있죠. 핸드폰, 가방, 컨버스 운동화 등등… 저도 중학교 시절에 약간 도발해서 부모님께 거짓말을 하고 그때 당시 학생들 사이에 명품으로 통했던 intercrew티셔츠를 샀다가 들통이 나자 그 다음날 학교 못 갈 뻔 한 적이 있어요. 그 이후로 더욱 더 모범생 모드로 돌입했지요. 제 주위에 항상 브랜드 아이템에 대해서 노래를 부르던 친구가 있었는데 그 친구 덕분에 학원비로 옷사고 신발사고, 엄마께 떼쓰던 기억이 나네요. 사실 지금은 좀 후회도 돼요. 그 때 공부 열심히 했으면… 하고요. 부모님께 미안하기도 하고요.

As for personality – Korean high school kids have a lot, especially high school girls. If there’s one group of people in the world I’d never want to have to fight several hundred of, it’s Korean schoolgirls. I have a feeling that if it were a death match between 1,000 Tartans and 1,000 Korean girl high school seniors with the entrance exam or jobs on their mind – the only people left standing would be busy checking their hair in vanity mirrors and freshening up with the help of little, hidden makeup compacts.

The three girls in this set struck me because of their badass attitude. They seem like good kids, but are definitely still cool – they’re not the geeks or nerds (like I was!). They’re not breaking all that many rules, and are nothing in comparison with some high school kids today, whose choice of overly-small tops, altered skirts (in keeping with the miniskirt trend in vogue these days), and high-as-rules-allow heels definitely blur the line between real schoolgirls’ regulation school wear and some sexy parody of what schoolgirls wear.

제가 학교 다닐 때는 너무 순진해서 작은 몸집에 비해 너무 큰 치마를 접어입기는 했어도 수선 맏기거나 하는 것은 생각하지도 못했어요. 예전에는 치마 수선하는 학생들 보면 날라리라고 생각했었는데 요즘은 조금 다른 생각이 들어요. 이런 식으로 시간을 내서 비록 교복이지만 외모에 신경을 쓴다는 걸 보면 앞으로 패션 쪽으로 나가면 성공할 것 같은 생각이 들어요. 학교에서도 이런 학생들을 다그치기만 하지 말고 탈렌트를 발전시키도록 도와주면 좋겠어요.

아참, 그러고 보니 제가 고등학교 다닐 때 엄청 추운 날에 핑크색 목도리를 하고 등교한 적이 있어요. 이 날 학생주임 선생님(남자)은 밍크코트를 입고 계셨죠. 학생주임 선생님은 저의 핑크색 목도리를 보더니 제 머리를 손바닥으로 후려치셨어요. 어찌나 기분이 상하던지.. 그 길로 학교 자퇴하고 유학준비했답니다. ㅋㅋ

Not regulation, but close enough, and much better, frankly!

For our cool girls, the open top with t-shirts sticking out is definitely non-regulation, but very cool, both in terms of temperature and temperament. The Converses. Extra-long hair that isn’t put up. The “circle lenses” that make your pupils look bigger, for a Shrek 2, Puss-In-Boots effect. Pink umbrella slung to the backpack.

제가 학창시절로 돌아간다면 여전히 부모님을 기쁘게 해드리기 위해서 모범생과 같이(?) 교복을 입겠지만 다른 방식으로 교복을 입는 학생들을 날라리라고 정의하지는 않을 것 같아요. 그들의 관점을 배우기 위해 친구가 되고 싶을 것 같네요. 그들의 창의력과 다른 사고방식을 배울 수 있으니까요. ^^

날 조금 안다면 난 80년대의 패션을 대게 싫어하는 걸 알 서예요. 근데 이번도 박진영씨는 완전히 지니여스가 된 거예요. 이번에 원더걸스이란 그룹은 새로운 멤버랑 다시 시작했는데 옛날의 조금 변태같은 교복 컨셉에서 벗어난 거고 완전히 신선한 ‘레트로 룩’으로 뉴 비긴닝을 하고 있네요.

OK – I’ll just say right now that I don’t relish the 80’s revival. You know this about me if you’ve been here before. But that Pak Jin-young is a frickin’ genius. Upon the public replacement of one of the main members of the group, he’s gone from a cliched and somewhat questionable “naughty schoolgirls” look to a fresh and vibrant retro 80’s look, with some fabulous fashion to boot. 여성그룹 원더걸스(Wonder Girls)가 건강악화의 이유로 팀을 탈퇴한 현아의 빈자리에 유빈(김유빈)이라는 새 멤버를 영입해 1집 앨범 ‘The Wonder Years’를 발표하며 본격적인 활동에 돌입한다.

소희의 티징포스터로 관심이 고조된 원더걸스 1집 정규 앨범은 신나는 레트로(Retro)스타일로 13일 앨범 발매에 앞서 5일 타이틀곡 ‘Tell Me’를 포함한 5곡을 멜론과 도시락, 싸이월드를 통해 선공개했다.

밑에 우리가 뉴스엔의 사진을 좀 만져서 재밌게 요소들을 추가했는데 80년대의 옛날 옥실에서 많이 있었던 전자오락처럼 나온 거예요 - 그 때는 게임들은 대게 심플하고 화려했죠? 그런 느낌을 잘 잡았고.

사실 80년대의 패션을 놀리는 건 너무 쉬워요. 왜 그럴까요? 바로 그 이유는 80년대의 패션 중에 놀릴 수 있는 부분은 많아서 그런 거예요. 그래도 지금 원더걸스는 너무 멋지게 나왔고 보니까 코디 너무 잘한 거예요: 화려한 펌프, 마돈나스러운 ‘투투’도 입고, 많은 뱅글, 막 날아나가는 머리. 다 있네요. 근데 진짜 생각보다 멋지네요…

Now, it’s really easy to make 80’s fashion look really, really bad. That’s because most 80’s fashion was really, really bad. But these girls somehow look great, with a simpler and more coordinated take on the 80’s look – the colorful pumps, the Madonna-video tutu, the heat-combed hair, heavy bangles – it’s all there. And it looks…good!

그리고 옛날 닌텐도 게임처럼 (마이오, 반갑다!) 그 배경은 퍼펙트이네요. 옛날 닌텐도 캐릭터 넣어보니까 너무 어울리지 않아요? 그리고 요즘에 패션사진쪽에 인기 있는 점프컷도 잘 이용한 거예요. 근데 진영씨! 난 마리오, 메가맨, 뭐 그런 캐릭터들이 다 넣었는데 왜 당신의 고용하는 디자이너 이런 컨셉으로 생각을 못 했을 건가? 메롱!

And that background he’s using for these actually interesting shots (mid-air jump shots are all the rage in fashion photography these days, it seems) is just jagged-edged, Nintendo-era, videogame sprite amazing.

이 메이크오버는 너무 천재같은 아이디어였어요. 그 패턴, 색깔은 딱 그 옷이랑 엉울리고 씬디로퍼의 “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”이란 비디오처럼 가볍고 신나는 느낌이죠. 남잔데 나두 일어나서 뛰고 싶은…아니아니. 난 남잔데…무슨 소리야? ㅋㅋㅋ

A stroke of genius, and a great splash of colors that makes a perfect palette against which to pose those girls-just-wanna-have-fun girly leap-flips into the air. Cyndi Lauper would be proud. Heck, they make me almost wanna stand up and do a girly jump in the air. Almost.

언니! 너무 멋지당! 스타일도 좋고 그리고 진짜 80년대보다 현재의 레트로 룩은 더 좋은 거지. 스타일리스트의 능력이 있는 만큼 뮤직비디오는 좋은 걸 바래요. 그렇다면 진짜 어떤 80년의 분위기, 유행을 다시 좋아하게 된 걸 인정해야 되겠네요. .

Girls, you’re looking GREAT! I love the style, since you’re doing the retro better than the original! I hope your videos are as good as your new stylists; if it is, I may just have to admit that I like seeing some of the 80’s come back.

원더걸스의 언니들아! 너무 잘하고 있고 앞서가는 팝, 패션리더이잖아요. 그리고 80년대의 제일 재밌었던 부분도 잘 지키는 거죠. 계속 이렇게 하면 원더우먼들이 될 것아닌가요? ㅋㅋㅋ
