“Fabulous Fashionistas” 컬럼에서는 서울의 뛰어난 멋쟁이들을 소개해 드립니다. 여기서 “멋”이란 어떠한 유행을 의미하는 것이나 비싼 명품 아이템을 자랑스럽게 가지고 있는 것을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 자기 자신의 패션 스타일을 특별히 잘 보여주는 사람, 창조적인 코디로 눈에 확 띄는 사람, 그런 분들을 이 컬럼에서 만나보실 수 있습니다.

In the Fabulous Fashionistas column, we shoot the most fashionably original people we can find on the streets of Seoul and bring them to you. We don’t choose them because they follow the trends the most closely, nor because they have the most designers labels attached to their bodies, but because they’ve managed to create their own unique style that one can’t simply pass by without wanting to remember.

한국의 스트리트 패션은 다양성이 생기고 있는 거네요. 요즘에 딱 ‘일본식’이라고 하기 힘든 거고 ‘미국식’도 말하기 그렇네요. 뭐 압구정으로 내려가면 좀더 미국적 냄새를 날 거예요. 이 여자 3먕을 지나가고 있었는데 너무 화려하게 눈에 띄었기 때문에 사진을 물어볼 수 없을 밖에 없었죠. 너무 ‘컬러플’과 ‘여성스러운’과 ‘도시적 쿨’한 다양한 3가지 룩들이 모여있어서. 일본 스타일이며 잘 한국화를 된 것같고. 뭐 자기 스타일로 만들었죠, 뭐. 일본은 큰 영향이라고 하겠지만 한국식으로 단순화된 것같고 좀터 street-ready스타일로 된 거고요.

Korean street fashion is getting more varied, indeed. These days, the influence of Japan is as present as ever, although perhaps somewhat Koreanized and simplified, I think. Of course, one might say, “Hey! That’s just Japanese fashion!” but I think this influence is important to track and is inevitably part of certain Korean looks, just as much as American fashion is a huge influence as well. But I wouldn’t simply call Korean fashion “American fashion” warmed over.

그 구두! 뭐랄까! 너무 재밌고 좀 어린 느낌이 나고 이쁜 신호등의 빨간색 신호만큼 교통을 STOP할 수 있는 능력이 있는 것같아요.

The shoes are fabulous, aren’t they? Red tights that can stop traffic, with a youthful and playful pair of red-and-white polka-dot shoes. How’d she pull that off?

이 친구는 너무 멋진 액세서리 벨트가 있어요. 배트맨보다 준비되고 있는 패션어블한 사람이네요.반지도 맘에 들고 그리고 티셔츠도. 전쟁 때 무슨 전글에 가도 너무 패션어블하게 생존할 수 있을 것같아요. 멋져!

This girl’s got more accessories than Batman’s utility belt. Love the rings, the phone, and the t-shirt. She looks like she could survive for three weeks in a wartime jungle and still be able to be coolly accessorized. You’re ready for anything, girl!

이 친구도 완전히 다른 룩도 있어요. 그녀도 좀 일본스럽지만 제일 한국수준으로 평범하게 다닐 수 있는 것같아요. 웬지 살짝 섹시하고 귀여운 스타일? 여성스러운 long blouse하고 lace slip과 반스토킹도 신어서 kitten heel이랑 쌀짝 여성스러운 귀여움.

This young lady has a completely different look as well. She’s also has a Japanese look, with a girly long blouse, what looks like a lace slip, and the ubiquitous thigh-high stockings, which adds a little “naughty” to her “nice.” It adds up to a slightly sexy-cute, and is a somewhat dressed-down Japanese look.

이 여자들을 만나서 방가운 이유는 너무 평범패션하고 자기 자극적인 개인 스타일 사이에 딱 좋은 룩을 잘 키운 거니까 좋았어요. 잘했어요, 당신 멋쟁이 아가씨들아!

I was very happy to meet these young ladies in the street, who seemed to strike a nice balance between everyday fashion and their own edgy, personal styles. Looking good!

방금 내 편지가 OhMyNews에서 나왔어요. 물론 꼭 패션에 대한 정보도아닌데 우리 FMS이란 사이트가 시작할 때부터 이 사이트의 친구였고 많은 지원해줬거든요. 그래서 한마디하고 싶었죠. 그래서 오마이뉴스에서 나온 거고요:

For our English-speaking readers, I’ll just summarize by saying this is a public letter I wrote through OhMyNews to Soyeon to wish her good luck and much fun in space. It’s printed in Korean, so I’ll just summarize: I told her that she doesn’t need to be wished “good luck” or “a safe trip” because she’d already have heard that so many times, and that I thought she didn’t need it. She’s going to come back a different person and a true inspiration to us all — hero and all that — but that she should most focus on having fun in space, because it’s going to be the ride of her life.

Our site wants to wish Korea’s first astronaut Yi Soyeon good luck! She’s going into space tomorrow and we’re behind her all the way. She wrote a couple of posts here on our site about life in Russia, and has in general been a great friend as well as super role model for women. Soyeon, we all hope you have fun in space and return safely as a true “Spacegirl” to us everyday earthlings. Fighting!

이 사람은 전설적인 DJ 키드 카프리. 옛날부터 유명한 DJ였는데 이렇게 믹싱과 스크래칭을 할 수 있는 사람들이 많이 없죠? 휴. 옛날에 내가 고등학생으로써 house party에 갔을 때 생각나네요. 이런 DJ를 보기 쉬웠을 때였고 “CD”이란 것은 신기한 거였을 때이죠.

이건 레오니다스 왕이 페르시안 사절단을 우물 속으로 해치우고, 죽이는 드럼과 베이스 비트 음악이 깔렸을 때 한 말 아니에요? 아니면 해치워진 건 저일지도 몰라요. 저번 금요일 밤, Club Answer의 거대한 스피커들이 저의 뼈 속까지 느껴지는 듯했죠. 저는 다음 날 아침 마치 사나운 늑대랑 싸움이라도 한 듯한 기분으로 일어났어요. 그래도 쓰러지는 동안 몇 장의 사진은 건졌는걸요.

Isn’t that what great King Leonidas said before drop kicking the Persian emmisary into the well, unleashing a chorus of killer drum-n-bass beats? Or it could have been the drop kicking of my soul last Friday night, when the mammoth speakers of Club Answer went all biblical on my candy ass? I woke up the next day feeling like I’d been in a fight with a feral black he-wolf, but I did manage to take some shots as I went down.

What is Spektra, you ask? It’s a killer party style, one that brings a new level of fun, fresh, and funky to Korea, straight through our Seoul. In short, it’s a killer cool party, put on by experienced DJ’s and club kids from around the world.

전 우리의 새로운 패션 다이어리스트 Miss Seonja와 함께 청담으로 내려가봤죠. 분위기랑 클럽패션 둘 다 살펴보려구요. 파티는 잘 기획되있었고, 비트는 울려 퍼지고 있었고, 참석자들은 화끈하게 춤을 출 줄 알더군요~

I went down to Cheongdam with our fashion-diarist-in-training, Miss Seonja, to check out the scene, both for the atmosphere and the club fashion. The party was well-organized, the beats were thumping, and the attendees knew how to get down.

우리는 들어가기도 전에 신선한 멋을 자랑하는 무리가 떠나는 걸 봤어요. 미국 대학생들이었는데 통금시간에 맞춰 집에 가기 위해 일찍 파티를 떠나 듯 했어요.

We didn’t even make it inside before we spotted some fresh flavor packets leaving the scene, ready to be consumed. They were some American college students who seemed like they needed to be home by curfew, so they had to party early and take their leave.

우리는 들어가서 준비를 했죠. 카메라, 비즈니스 카드, 노트북을 챙기고 파티할 준비를 했죠.

Once we made our way inside, we got our bearings, set up our cameras, business cards, and notebook, and got ready to roll.

And the scene was jumping, beats pumping, boodies bumping.

고고 부츠 스타일 웨스턴 부츠랑 그녀의 도도한 태도 둘 다 사랑스러웠어요. 그거에다가 파란 바탕에 하얀 별들은 마치 미국 국기를 연상시키는 듯했는데 정말 잘 어울렸죠. 이날 밤 그녀의 의상이 개인적으로 가장 마음에 들었어요.

Loved both the western-boots-as-go-go-boots style and the sassy attitude. That, plus the white stars set in a blue field, reminiscent of an Americana kitsch, made the whole thing work. Her outfit was my personal favorite of the night.

Miss Seonja랑 저는 무리 속에 들어가 춤을 추며 찍을 사람들을 찾았어요. 초록빛 불빛은 모든 게 괜찮도록 허락했어요.

Miss Seonja and I got right into the mix, dancing our way around and catching people to snap. The green lasers made everything people did alright.

물론, 어떤 사람들은 후끈 달아오르기 위해 레이저들이 필요 없었죠. 분위기는 쿨하고 개방적이었어요. 그리고 모두들 자신의 방식대로 추고 싶은대로 춤을 췄죠. 멋진 사람들과 스타일을 위한 자리였죠.

Of course, some people didn’t need lasers to get heated up. The mood was cool and open, and everybody got down the way they needed to, the way they wanted. That made for some cool peoples and styles.

바다빛 파란색이 정말 마음에 들군요 멋쟁이 오빠.

Get…get…your drink on, get, get your drink on. Love the Enya-ocean-blue, dude.

NKotB? 뭐라구요??? 멋졌어요. 이날 밤 테마는 “네온과 블랙”이었대요. 그리고 이들은 가장 테마를 잘 살려서 상을 받았죠. 테마를 정말 멋지게 소화했죠.

NKotB? Say whuuuut? That was cool. The theme for the night was actually “neon and black” — and they get the prize for best following of instructions, as well as for knocking the theme outta the park. Matching 80’s ladies and the New Kids on the Block tee? That is straight PIMP.

방금 그 말 취소할게요. 이 분이 정말로 간지났죠. 그리고 그의 여유에 속지 마세요. 간지 부리기란 쉽지 않다는 걸 우린 다 배웠잖아요? 멋져요. 모자가 정말 마음에 드네요, 제대로 찍히지 않다니… 제가 조금 피곤했나 봐요. 좀 쉬어야했죠.

Let me take that back. THIS guy was straight pimpin’. And don’t let his ease fool you, since we all have learned that “pimpin’ ain’t easy.” Nice one, dude. Love the hat, too — I was remiss in not getting that on film. I was getting a bit tired, obviously. Had to take a seat.

ExpatJane이 도착했어요. 그녀는 하상백씨와 마시느라 바빴어요. 그는 이쪽 세상에서 가장 멋진 모델/디자이너/예술가/클러버 에요.

ExpatJane had arrived on the scene, and was busy drinking with Ha Sang Beg, who is like the coolest model/designer/artist/clubber this side of the Moon.

이 파티의 VJ이자 기획자인 Sarah는 파티를 계속 가게 했죠. DJ, 손연과 Eugene Blake 들도 트렉을 마구 섞으며 달리고 있었죠. 음악은 관중을 움직였어요. 제가 사람들이 가질 수 있다고 생각한 것보다 관중은 훨씬 더 많은 댄스 에너지를 발휘했어요. 그리고 신기한 일이 발생했죠. 저는 사람들이 미치는 걸 많이 봤지만 한국 여자가 클럽에서 메인 스피커들 앞에서 마구 흔들어대는 건 처음 봤죠.

Sarah, VJ and creative director of the party, was keeping the party going. The DJs, Sonyeon and Eugene Blake, were also in full effect, as they mixed tracks. The music drove the crowd, and they expended more dance energy than I thought humans could hold. And then a funny thing happened. I had seen people going buck wild, but never seen the top come off a Korean girl in a club before, twirling it hard on top of the main speakers.

네, 정말 파티는 최고조 모드에 달했죠.

Yes, this party was in full effect mode.

정말 그날 밤 누구도 DJ의 실력의 중요성을 과소평가할 수 없었어요.

One cannot underestimate the importance of the DJs’ skills that night. Their shit was majorly together. Tightly wrapped.

파티가 필요한 건 저런 에너지에요. 이런 분위기가 정말 진정한 재미를 보게 하죠. 우리는 최고의 클럽에 대한 우리의 임무를 다했다고 생각하고 떠나기 전에 몇 개 장의 사진을 더 찍었어요. 근데 우리는 좋은 사진 몇장을 더 찍고 싶었죠.

That’s the kind of energy a party needs, the kind of atmosphere that leads to the realest kind of fun. We did get a couple more snaps before we rolled out, but we felt we had done our part for king and club. But we wanted to get just a couple more good shots.

우와! 여기는 Greek 체격을 가진 두 젊은이들이이에요. “This…is…Sparta!” 정말 믿어요. 윗몸 일으키기라도 좀 할 시간인 거 같네요. 제 헬스이용권이 어딨더라…? 여기서 좀 작게 느껴지네요. 다음 파티까지는 윗몸 일으키기를 하면서 재충전해야겠어요, 다음 배틀을 준비하면서!

Rrrrrrripped! Now, these are two nice young men with physiques of the Greeks. “This…is…Sparta!” I believe you, dude. It’s time for me to do some situps, I think. Where’s my gym membership, again? I’m feeling a little inadequate over here… Until the next party, I’ll be doing crunches and recharging my batteries — and preparing for the next battle on the dance floor!

My name is Miss Seonja and I live in a little country called Korea. I’ll tell you that much to start with. Hehehe. I am just in love with and fascinated by clothes and am living life as a fashion design major. I’ve been really lucky to have become involved with FeetManSeoul.com through Seoul Fashion Week. Now, I can become involved in fashion-related stuff directly! How lucky is it that I’ve gotten the chance to make some good connections and get some good experience in fashion?

Ever since I was a student, I’ve done a lot work related to fashion. By working at a clothing store in the Dongdaemun wholesale market, of course I was surrounded by clothes all day long. Perhaps I can say that this was how I developed a keener sense of fashion while discovering my own particular style. I definitely don’t want what everyone else has, and I want even less to be merely ordinary. It’s said that “you only live once,” so wouldn’t it be boring to be the same as everyone else?

패션 패션을통해 난 나를 표현하고, 하루하루 내 자신을 변화시키지. 단순히 옷만 좋아하는 게아니라 가방, 신발, 악세서리등 이모든걸 난 다 좋아하고 아껴.

내사진들을 보면서 이젠 내가 어떤 style인지 어떤 style을 즐겨입는지 알게 될거야. 난 그날그날 내기분. 내가 가는곳, 그날의 날씨등을 보면서 어쩔때는 funky, 어쩔때는 sexy, 또어쩔 때는 spicy등, ‘freestyle’로 가지.

I express myself with a passion for fashion, and it changes me every day. It’s not just that I only like clothes, but also am into bags, shoes, accessories, and things like that are what I like and cherish.

By looking at my pictures, you can get a sense of what kind of styles I enjoy. What my mood was that day, where I go, what the weather was like, etc. Sometimes I dress funky, sometimes sexy, sometimes spicy and also just freestyle it.
Anyway, for now, I think I’ll leave the introduction at that…

PopSeoul에 의하면 하리수와 남편이 아직도 사랑에 깊이 빠져있는 것같대요. F/W 2008 Seoul Fashion Week에서 우리가 황재복의 패션쇼에서 봤는데 또 사지늘 찍었어요. 물론 뉴스기자의 사진들이 있는데 우리사진은 제일 잘 나온 거아닌가요? ㅋㅋㅋ 노출 제대로 한 거니까요. 그리고 전신도 나오고 포즈 잘 잡은 거예요. 직접 카메라로 보고. 그녀의 얌전한 스타일이 멋있고 그 가방도 맘에 드네요!

According to PopSeoul, Harisu and hubby are still in love, as displayed in the star shots taken at Hwang Jae-bok’s show during the F/W 2008 Seoul Fashion Week. We were there, and got our own pics of the the still-happy couple, although ours were properly exposed. This is the second time we’ve met Harisu in person, and I must say that we do like her demure and classy style. Love the purse!

이 유명한 황재복이란 한국의 앞서나가시는 웨딩 디자이너의 쇼에서 나온 사진들을 나중에 보여드릴 거고 그리고 한국 패션 세계에서 어떤 역할하신지, 본인의 패션 스타일 뭔지, 그리고 이번에 된 대한패션디자이너협회장으러써 한국패션의 미래에 대해서 인터뷰로 많은 좋은 정보를 해주시 거예요. 자막만 넣면 되니까 기대들하세요. 작업중이라서…

커미디안 안선영씨는 갑자기 패션쇼에 모델로 나왔을 때는 난리났네요. 런웨이 옆어 앉았던 하리수, 안연홍, 그리고 다른 연예인들이 응원하러 왔더라고요. 쇼가 끝나서 백스테이지에 가서 안선영씨까 방송국이랑 인터뷰를 하면서 안연홍의 사진을 찍었네요. 다들 대게 친절한 거네요!

Comedian Ahn Seon-yeong also made an appearance at the show, by actually being IN the show, and was a hit with fellow actors cheering in support on the runway. Harisu and hubby were in attendance, as was Ahn Yeon-hong, whom we snapped backstage waiting for the other Ahn’s interview to finish.

이 소식이 new아닐 수 있는데 화려한 컬러는 너무나 많이 볼 수 있어요. 길거리에서 그리고 런웨이에서도 그렇더라고요. 그 걸 보니까 이번 봄부터 화려해질 것같고 그리고 가을, 겨울에 추워질수록 뚜거운 스타킹과 코트 입을 때는 더 화려해질 것같아요. 여름에는 화려한 신발과 미니원피스들이 bright colors으로 나올 듯하네요.

Now, this may not be news to some of by now, but the bright colors are steadily hitting the streets this spring, and if the runway shows were any indication, will be in even stronger effect in the colder months, when tights and bright coats provide stronger colors in addition to warmth.

이번 F/W 2008 서울패션위크의 쇼들 사이에 인터뷰한 아주 화려한 1학년생이랑 조금 얘기 나누었어요. 파란색, 노란색, 하얀색, 그리고 핑크색을 잘 코디하니까 궁금했었거든요.

A well-done and representative case was found in a young lady we interviewed at Seoul Fashion Week F/W/2008, who was coordinating blues, yellows, whites, and pinks.

진짜 잘 아는 것같았어요. 왜냐하면 조금 잘못하면 진짜 이상하게 나올 수 있으니까. 그런 화려한 색깔들을 코디하는 건 불장난같네요. 잘 못 하면 남의 눈이 아프거든요.

She knew what she was doing, since those bright elements are no joke to play with, nor were her blue tights, which were positively blinding.

With colors that bright, you’re playing with fire — it’s easy to burn yourself and the eyes of those around you. Yet, she was doing a good job.

패션쇼를 다는 사람들 중에 colorful하게 입는 사람들이 많았고 그리고 길거리에서도 많이 볼 수 있ㅇㅓㅆ죠.

Here’s a young lady we bumped into on the subway on the way out from one of the week’s shows.

역시 런웨이쇼에서도 화려하게 옷은 입으면 진짜 남들보다 눈에 확 띄는 거네요! 흠. 이런 계속 돌아오는 80년대 패션을 생각하면 웬지 Cyndi Lauper의 생각도 나네요.

In the end, colors sure do help you stand out from the crowd, even during a runway show. Wow. Thinking about this continuing 80’s trend, I can’t help but think of Cyndi Lauper.
