“The Fashion Diaries” are columns produced by real people wearing real fashions. Our fashion diarists don’t merely follow current trends, but also integrate them into their own particular styles as not mere fashion followers, but style leaders. They record what they wear every day, as well as what they buy, or any changes they make to their look. They have opened their purses, closets, and vanities to us, allowing us an intimate and transparent look into real fashion that we rarely get to see. If you need fashion hints, or are tracking trends, or just want to vicariously experience another fashion lifestyle, you have come to the right place. So, make suggestions, write comments, and let’s start a style conversation!

[It's Ryuji from] Seoul Fashion Week

Hi! Hello! Konnichiwa! Well, since I think this self-introduction might be corny, I’m just going to let you get to know me directly through my dairy. I have the feeling we’re going to spend a lot of quality time together here at FMS. It’s good to meet you all!

Even though the weather isn’t sparkling, we went to see the cherry blossoms bloom in Yeouido. These days, I like to wear comfortable clothes to go walking in the Hopi flat shoes I wear nearly every day, while taking along a Polaroid camera hanging from around my neck. Oh, yeah. Still, next year when I go to look at the cherry blossoms, I won’t be wearing any blue clothes. The pictures look like crap against the flowers.

On killer Mondays like this, when classes starts from 9 in the morning and go until 9 at night, I pack all the many books and things I need in a huge pink bag that I hoist on my back, which really should be used for camping. It was kind of a depressing day, so I decided to wrap my body in pink. I brought all my old friends, including the Bugs Bunny t-shirt that I think was the first time wearing. I brought him from Zara, in Japan.

It’s just a hunch, but I get the feeling that I won’t be able to wear that again this summer. So I put on a green mini-dress that I like, along with green stockings. My friend also wore a green dress that day, causing up to be happy enough to take a picture together. The bowler I’m wearing is my favorite. I stole it from a Dongdaemun mannequin. Hehehe.

I really hate rainy days. I hate even more those days that begin all perfect but then the rain starts to come in the late afternoon. So this is a raincoat I got 3 or 4 years ago. It’s really worth it. Also, some sunglasses I bought on a whim in some store. I am indeed the queen of impulse buying.

I just woke up after having slept spread out like a koala bear. When I don’t want to have to worry about arranging my hair after a shower, I always wear my wool cap. It’s one of my best friends. And this is one of my favorite colors these days: neon. I got the shirt a few years ago in an Australian flea market, and I really like the message. Hehehe. Next time I get the chance, I want to introduce you to my friend Daniel’s t-shirts. If I drop by Germany, I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures.

As you can see, I don’t really have a special style. You might say that I just like clothes that fit me, nothing too loose. Because these days, I attend a school atop a high hill, and after trying to wear comfortable clothes, I’ve gotten used to a more casual look. In the future, join me here on FMS for more fashion fun!

Things are getting more colorful on the streets of Seoul.

IMG_0038 copy

As you can see in the pictures above and below, shoes from the 20’s, Converses, and bright sneakers/shoelaces are all the rage, along with bright colors in general.

IMG_0061 copy

And as much as the fashions change, there is still a conservative, girlish look (which we’ve talked about before as “the demure look”) that will never die.

IMG_9978 copy

IMG_1186 copyIMG_0062 copyIMG_0033 copy

IMG_9967 copyIMG_1160 copyIMG_1142 copy

Even the more traditionally feminine styles still tend towards a high hemline.

IMG_1126 copy

IMG_0031 copyIMG_0058 copyIMG_1116 copy

Here are some variations of casual fashion, where skinny jeans and leggings still rule. Because leggings allow skirts to go higher without seeming too risque, and they also cover the often not-so-clear skin that comes with many Korean women’s legs, they are permanent fixtures, just as stockings never died in Korea and Japan.

IMG_1108 copy

IMG_1163 copyIMG_1134 copyIMG_1152 copy

IMG_9956 copy

More casual styles, where you see the different influences mixing. Even above, the trends criss-cross and overlap; there is no pure, singular influence. You can see a lot of jeans and denim materials, which I use to define as “casual.”

IMG_1174 copyIMG_1169 copyIMG_1149 copy

But there are all kinds of ways to be “casual” without wearing jeans. The notion of “casual” isn’t as strong as in the US, since that’s a culture in which many people don’t wear much more than a t-shirt and jeans on the everyday level, while Korea is a culture in which many put on makeup to go to the grocery store.

IMG_1119 copyIMG_1145 copyIMG_1135 copy

Sometimes, you add a different top and a jacket, and it’s a mix of casual and “dressed up.” I think one major dividing line is defined by flats, especially ballet flats. Add the popular, flapper-inspire beady necklaces in vogue these days, a nicer top, or a shiny pump or high heel sandal, and you start to straddle the line.

In many situations, blacks, whites, and grays are still the old fallback in Korea for people who want to keep it simple and safe. Here we’ve got some black with little bolts of color.

Now, this may not be news to some of by now, but the bright colors are steadily hitting the streets this spring, and if the runway shows were any indication, will be in even stronger effect in the colder months, when tights and bright coats provide stronger colors in addition to warmth.

IMG_4224 copy

A well-done and representative case was found in a young lady we interviewed at Seoul Fashion Week F/W/2008, who was coordinating blues, yellows, whites, and pinks.

IMG_3529 copy

She knew what she was doing, since those bright elements are no joke to play with, nor were her blue tights, which were positively blinding.

With colors that bright, you’re playing with fire — it’s easy to burn yourself and the eyes of those around you. Yet, she was doing a good job.

IMG_3476 copy

We found a lot of colorful people at the show, as well as people on the streets.

IMG_0277 copy

Whatever one’s preferences, one should note that Korean women are definitely moving away from mere black-and-white.

IMG_5274 copyIMG_5247 copy

Here’s a young lady we bumped into on the subway on the way out from one of the week’s shows.

IMG_4322 copy

IMG_4342 copy

It reminds me of one of the best pictures we took with us from that week, which had a similar blue-and-white theme.

IMG_2371 copy

These days, it seems a lot of blues, pastels, and neon colors seem to be striking my eye. You all noticing the same thing?

IMG_5003 copy

The same can be said for color minidresses with black or white short jackets. Same dress, different concepts.

IMG_1024 copyIMG_5726 copy

Joanne said she noticed a lot of that down in Taegu. I’d like to hear more about this.

IMG_5494 copy

In the end, colors sure do help you stand out from the crowd, even during a runway show. Wow. Thinking about this continuing 80’s trend, I can’t help but think of Cyndi Lauper.

Now, that puts me in a good mood. Have a great weekend!

Fashion is Fetish!

Mar 24, 2008 Author: FMS | Filed under: Blogged In (from foreign sites), Trends

I found this on the front page — the FRONT page — of the New York Times. I’ve been taking street fashion pictures like this for 2 years in Korea, yet some just call me a “fetishist.” It gets printed in The New York Times and it’s front page fashion news. Oh, well. I think there are a lot of interesting styles in Korea (as well as a lot of cheap copies, too) and well worth tracking, photographing, and appreciating. Bill Cunningham does this as an audio slide show, and it’s real fun to watch.

Nyt Shoes-1

IMG_2734 copy

One should remember our motto — “fashion is fetish”; and for us, the shoe is just the beginning. The “Konglish” word “pe-ti-shee” has the general idea, but only as it is limited to the name for a genre of pornography. For fashionistas and those who appreciate them, the desire for a shiny blue purse or pink enamel shoes has roots in pure fetish — it is a deep-felt desire and attachment to things. The fact that those things make us look and feel more confident, sexier, and have to power to make us happier is a crucial one. Freud might agree:

In the Freudian understanding of “fetish”, there comes a point in early male childhood when one’s intimate relationship with one’s mother has to face the fact of sexual attraction for women in general. The oedipal sexual desire for mother has to be sublimated and constantly denied; but the fact of the attraction exists, and becomes expressed through attraction to specific objects or parts that subconsciously represent the mother figure and associated direct sexual desire for her. Hence, the common fetish for the foot, legs, breasts, or hands, all of which can easily be understood to be major points of contact between mother and child. From the point of view of an infant looking up at mother’s gargantuan feet and towering legs, or suckling with the breasts, or feeling the constant warmth, power, and oft-times wetness of mother’s hands, the development of such associations - in any culture - becomes easier to understand.

Is this bringing back nightmares from Psych 101 again? Getting sleepy? Sorry about that. ;-)

One can just say that “fashion is passion” in a similar way; for the girl with the new Prada shoes, or sporting the shiny Louis Vuitton bag, or those appreciating and coveting those items from far away. It’s also true for those photographing it, and loving the luster it brings to our lives.

IMG_2299 copy

For the fashionistas, at least, bright tights and other colorful accents are definitely IN.

IMG_2371 copy

Now, I wonder if this will trickle down to the street, where less intrepid ladies actually tread? Looks like it it might be.

IMG_0277 copy

I love the look of this student I found walking out of Yonsei’s front gate.

IMG_0406 copyIMG_0376 copy

Opaque tights are the thing to have in general this season, and it looks like black — safe and easy to coordinate — is the new black. Well, I don’t think much has changed, but I definitely think that someone out there is telling Korean women to wear white or light pumps with black or dark tights.

IMG_2247 copy

The white bow definitely tips her in the direction of “cute” and makes for a much younger look. Note this picture as this article continues, especially in terms of the short lengths and ruffles. The more demure jacket helps keep this in the realm of cute, along with the black, opaque tights.

IMG_2135 copy

There’s also a major thing with ruffles going on these days, as you can see in the picture above, with not just one, but two more girls in line with ruffle or sequined skirts and matched jackets.

IMG_2092 copy

The recent return to the 1920’s and the whole “flapper” look, with 40’s oxford booties galore, is responsible for all this, it seems.

IMG_2015 copy

She’s doing an interesting mixture of sequin bolero top and ruffle “minidress” worn over a casual pair of skinny jeans and t-shirt. That was a new one for me, and I liked what she was trying to do.

IMG_2038 copy

If there was any doubt that this is flapper-inspired, the loose bead necklace and heavy pearls on the wrist lay that all to rest.

IMG_2027 copy

I wonder what she would look like with shorter hair? I think the look would be stronger if her hair were much shorter, since it’s sort of between a real bob cut and longer hair. If I could wave a magic wand, I’d say go short, sister! That would totally lock in the look, and make clearer what you’re doing. I love the idea and think you should go all the way!

Overall, I’m seeing some stark, two-tone contrasts being a theme here, either expressed as a splash of color against a plain black or white palette, or black-and-white as the point of contrast itself.

IMG_2165 copy

With a mix of 1920’s “flap,” 1940’s footwear, and 1960’s “mod”, the look is as sharp as the contrasting, two-tone color schemes.

What is FASHION?

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

--- Coco Chanel (1883–1971)

    • Amber: Awww, that’s a really nice story. And they’re both quite fashionable as well lol. I love her haircut. This is totally random and has nothing to do with this story, but I don’t really know where to...

  • Seoul Street Styles: Scarves, Knits, and Layers (15)
    • Yina: I like the color of the knitted dress, but I have to agree with Jason - it is ill-fitting on this girl and makes her figure look like a square. I love what the girl in the picture with her boyfriend carrying the...

    • janie: OMG! wow! i might be a little late to congratulate you but CONGRATS!!!
    • FMS: Thanks for the feedback, DS. But we have to watermark precisely because we’re NOT National Geographic — all the pictures we put on this site are for content, but also for advertising our site when other...
    • DS: Yes, I’m guessing that the watermark is there to protect your property. But not even National Geographic does this. I think if you want your photos to be distributed far and wide, you need to show them at their...
    • tinaxxe: just curious but why do you call yourself “feetmanseoul”? is that a play on words. feet, seoul –> “sole”?
    • Tiffany: As others have stated, congrats! You must be very happy about this, I know I would be! I agree with Erotic Orange, in that Korean street fashion culture is getting recognized largely in part because you photograph...

What is STYLE?

"Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

--- Yves Saint Laurent (b. 1936)

What is SEXY?

"Darling, the legs aren't so beautiful, I just know what to do with them."

--- Marlene Dietrich (1901–1992)

What is TALENT?

"I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing 'Funny Face' when I couldn't sing, and dance with Fred Astaire when I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it.”

---Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)
